Jane Goodall, one of the world’s most famous ethologists (动物行为学家), was born in England in 1934. Her love for animals started early—she even kept a pet chimpanzee toy as a child, which sparked her curiosity about these smart animals.
In 1960, at the age of 26, Goodall traveled to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. There, she began studying wild chimpanzees, a task no one had done long term before. For over 60 years, she watched their daily lives closely: how they built nests, looked after their young, and worked together in groups. Her biggest discovery shocked the scientific world—she found that chimpanzees use tools, like sticks to get insects (昆虫) from trees. This changed the old idea that only humans could make and use tools.
Goodall didn’t stop at research. She wanted to protect chimpanzees and their habitats (栖息地). In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute, which works to save chimpanzees and teach people about environmental protection. She also became a UN Messenger of Peace, traveling around the world to speak about caring for nature. Even in her later years, she kept advocating (为……发声) for animals and the planet.

If you tell him the truth now
If you tell him the truth now。
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer ________________________ by people all over the world.
is still read and loved
Dear Alex,
When my voice changed, my classmates said I sounded like a duck, and it made me really sad. Now I don’t feel like talking much, and I really want my old voice back. What should I do about this?
Daniel
Dear Daniel,
I’m sorry to hear that you are influenced by your classmates’ words. It’s not nice to be laughed at. But try not to be too sensitive (敏感的) that your voice breaks. It’s a natural change and something many people go through.
I still remember my friend Ryan at school. For quite a long time during his teenage years, his voice was breaking. Sure, sometimes it was quite funny to hear a little croak (呱呱叫) rather than words, but it wasn’t that big a deal. He found that the more he paid attention to others’ opinions, the more others would laugh at him. If he just ignored other people’s words, then others would stop doing that.
So you can learn from Ryan. Don’t pay too much attention to other people’s opinions. You should be proud of the changes your body is going through, and not feel uncomfortable. Puberty (青春期) is a natural process (过程) everybody experiences. Also, maybe you can have a talk with your parents if you want to understand more about what this means. Your voice changing is only a small part of the process. You will probably get through this part quickly and in no time your voice will be strong and will not change again.
Alex

①根据文章第一段“When my voice changed, my classmates said I sounded like a duck(当我的声音改变时,我的同学说我听起来像只鸭子)”可推知结论他的同学嘲笑他因为他的声音改变了(听起来像鸭子)。故填changed/sounded like a duck。

关键短语:ignore other people’s words表示“无视别人的话”;stop doing that表示“停止那样做”。
Don’t be sad. Your voice will be normal soon.(答案不唯一,言之有理即可)。
You can tell him copying homework is wrong and offer to help him with his maths.(答案不唯一,言之有理即可)。

Goodall died in 2025 at the age of 91. Her work not only developed science but also encouraged millions of young people to take action for wildlife and the Earth.
4. What made Jane Goodall curious about chimpanzees?
A. A scientific book. B. A school project. C. A trip to Tanzania. D. A pet chimpanzee toy.
5. What does the underlined word “shocked” mean in Paragraph 2?

A. Chimpanzees lived in groups. B. Chimpanzees were very dangerous.
C. Only humans could use tools. D. Chimpanzees could speak human languages.
7. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The founding of the Jane Goodall Institute.
B. Goodall’s work as a UN Messenger of Peace.
C. Goodall’s actions to protect chimpanzees and the environment.
D. Goodall’s most important scientific discoveries about chimpanzees.
