Lisa is a Chinese student who went to visit her American friend, Emma, during the summer vacation. When she arrived at Emma’s house, she was nervous about the cultural ___1___. Emma’s parents welcomed her warmly. Lisa tried to greet them with a big smile, just like she did in China. She also wanted to shake their hands, but she noticed Emma’s father gave her a light hug instead. She felt a little surprised, but she went with it.
At dinner, Lisa noticed that everyone started eating as soon as the food was served. In China, she knew people usually ___2___ for the elders to start first. She felt a little confused, but she followed their way. Later, Emma offered her some cheese. Lisa didn’t like cheese at all, but she didn’t want to be ___3___, so she tried a small piece. To her surprise, it wasn’t that bad.
During the meal, Emma’s family talked loudly and laughed a lot. In China, it’s not polite to talk too much while eating. Lisa kept quiet at first, but Emma encouraged her to join the conversation. Slowly, she ___4___ to feel comfortable.
After dinner, Emma’s mother asked Lisa if she wanted more dessert. In China, people often say “no” politely even if they want it. So Lisa shook her head and said, “No, thank you.” But Emma’s mother just smiled and said, “You don’t have to be polite with us. Feel free to ask for ___5___ you like.” Lisa realized that being direct was acceptable here. She then said she’d love some ice cream, and everyone smiled.
When it was time to leave, Lisa gave Emma a small gift—a Chinese knot. Emma was very happy and hugged her tightly. In China, people usually don’t hug friends ___6___ , but Lisa didn’t mind. She learned that different cultures have different ways to show care.
On her way back, Lisa thought about the day. She realized that ___7___ others’ cultures is important when communicating across cultures. It’s not about who is right or wrong, but about being open-minded and respectful. She also decided to learn more about Western cultures ___8___ she could better understand her foreign friends.
This trip was a great ___9___ for Lisa. She not only made good memories but also learned a valuable lesson about ___10___ with people from different backgrounds.

Natural forces like storms, floods and earthquakes are powerful and unpredictable. Every year, millions of people around the world meet with different natural disasters. Many injuries and even deaths happen not because of the disaster itself, but because people do not know correct self-protection skills. Learning knowledge from Unit 9 and Unit 11 can help us stay safe when danger comes.
Earthquakes are one of the most sudden disasters. When you feel buildings shake, do not run out at once. Falling walls and flying glass may hurt you. The right way is to drop, cover and hold on. Drop down to your knees, cover your head under a heavy desk or table, and hold the furniture tightly until the shaking stops. If you are outside, stay away from tall buildings, power lines and big trees. Never take the lift during an earthquake. After shaking ends, check if there are small fires or gas leaks quickly.
Floods usually come after long-time heavy rain. Low-lying villages and riverside cities face bigger risks. Once you get the flood warning, pack your emergency bag first. The bag should have bottled water, dry biscuits, flashlights and a first-aid kit. Move to higher places such as hills or the top floor of strong buildings. Do not walk or drive through moving flood water. Even water that reaches your knees can knock adults down. Water also hides broken stones and deep holes under its surface.
Tornadoes have strong spinning winds that can blow houses apart. Before a tornado arrives, the sky turns dark green and you can hear a loud noise like a train. If you live in a house with a basement, hide inside it and cover your body with thick quilts. If there is no basement, stay in a small room without windows, like a bathroom. Stay far from cars and trees outdoors.
Volcanic eruptions are less common in our country, but we still need to learn related knowledge. Thick ash from volcanoes is bad for our breathing. When ash falls down, wear masks and close all doors and windows tightly. Do not go to low valleys, because hot lava always flows down to lower land.
Many schools now hold disaster practice every term. Teachers teach students the skills we talked above. It is not enough to just read textbooks about natural forces; we need to practice again and again so we can act calmly when real danger comes.
( )21. Why do many people get hurt in natural disasters?
A. Disasters are too powerful. B. They lack self-protection knowledge.
C. They refuse to leave their houses. D. The rescue teams arrive too late.
( )22. What should you do first when an earthquake hits indoors?
A. Run out of the building quickly. B. Take the elevator downstairs.
C. Hide under heavy furniture. D. Call your family members.
( )23. Which of the following is dangerous during a flood?
A. Staying on the top floor. B. Packing clean drinking water.
C. Driving through running flood water. D. Moving to high hills.
( )24. What color will the sky turn before a tornado comes?
A. Dark green. B. Dark black. C. Light blue. D. Gray white.
( )25. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Different types of natural disasters in the world.
B. How to keep safe when facing natural forces.
C.The reasons why natural disasters happen.
D. School safety training about earthquakes.

This year marks the 31st World Book Day. It is reported that there are 158,464,880 books in the world, with about 2.2 million new ones coming out each year.
What You Need to Know
Nine out of 10 people say that their favorite books are the ones they pick out themselves.
People who choose their favorite books read more.
Rereading books helps people become better readers and helps understanding.
Should you read a book more than once?
Some people prefer to dive into something new while others return to old favorites. Books are like people. Some you meet once and that’s enough. Some you want to get to know better, and whenever you are with them you discover more about them.
Last week, we asked 1000 readers if they should read a book more than once. The pie chart on the left shows the result.
Here are more voices.
Fu Xing, a student
Amy, a teacher
Books aren’t like films or songs. Reading a book takes time. Why do you waste time on something you’ve already read? If you keep reading the same book, you may lose the chance to learn new or different stories. Even worse, you won’t make progress as a reader.
People notice new details and understand the themes differently every time they read a book again. People get more pleasure when rereading, especially as you get older. Reading something at the age of 10 is different from reading it at the age of 15.
John, a writer
Wei Guo, a blogger
Instead of rereading something, it’s a good choice to give your book to someone, so they can enjoy it for the first time. You can discuss it later and see what they thought. You might think about the book differently after hearing a fresh opinion.
Many people find it hard to choose books that interest them. In this way, it’s better for them to reread the same book than to give up reading. Book lovers say that rereading can bring more comfort and joy. So it doesn’t matter if you’re reading it for the first time or the fifth.

Love Nature, Help Others
I’m Li Hua. Last week, my classmates and I took part in a volunteer activity called “Getting Close to Nature” in a park near our school. It was an unforgettable and meaningful experience for me.
When we got there, we began to work at once. First, we picked up rubbish around the lake and watered young trees carefully. We also stopped visitors from throwing waste everywhere. Later, a little boy got lost. I stayed with him and helped him find his parents. His parents thanked me a lot. From this activity, I learned about the importance of protecting nature and helping others. Looking into nature teaches us to respect every living thing. Helping others brings us happiness.
I believe small actions can make our life warmer and more meaningful. If everyone tries their best, we will live in a greener and better world together.
