Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their broken vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 42,120 kilometers around the world and passed through over 35 countries. They did this to support the grass roots education projects in Africa, Asia and South America.
The pair, who set off from London, thought their journey was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometers away from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turn by Richard and Nick over three days. On arrival in Chepén, Peru, they discovered a repairman who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.
The pair were back on the road aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.
Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa, Asia and South America. They witnessed first-hand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They joined street children in the slums of Cairo, Khartoum, Kampala, Mumbai and Phnom Penh. They visited Congolese refugees (难民) in camps in Eastern Burundi.
The pair established The Tuk Tuk Educational Trust, a U.K. registered charity. Talking about their motivation, Richard said, “The world’s leaders have made a commitment to achieve universal primary education but, in spite of this promise, over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school; many more are in school, but still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”

C. People should work together to promote equality in education.

After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.
Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.
Every four-square-metre room provides a treadmill (跑步机) music, watch movies and check emails by connecting to the Internet by the screen fixed on the treadmill. But there’s no shower.
Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code for use. A refundable deposit (可退还的押金) of 99 yuan is required, and users are charged 1 yuan every 5 minutes.
The shared gym rooms are created by Misspao, a Beijing-based technology company founded in July. Within several months since it was founded, the company has already raised over 100 million yuan. However, the idea of the shared fitness experience is not totally new. Last December, the company VRUN set up shared treadmills in office and apartment buildings.
The sharing economy is still becoming popular in China. According to Yicai Global, confident people are pouring millions into sharing start-ups. In March, the State Information Centre published a report which says that the total value of China’s sharing economy will see a yearly growth of 40% in the coming years, and it is expected to make a great contribution to the country’s GDP.
53. Which of the following is a potential advantage of shared gym rooms over traditional gyms?
A. They offer a wider variety of group exercise classes.
B. They are more suitable for large-scale social activities.
C. They are cheaper as they require no deposit.
D. They might be more conveniently located near neighborhoods.
54. What is the correct process for using a shared gym room?
A. Scan the code, book the room, then locate it.
B. Pay the deposit, watch TV, then connect to the internet.
C. Locate the room, book it, then scan a QR code to use it.
D. Run on the treadmill, then get a refund automatically.
55. Who would benefit MOST from using a shared gym room?
A. A professional athlete who needs intensive daily training.
B. A person living in an apartment who wants a convenient and private workout.
C. A family looking for a weekend activity to do together.
D. A tourist who wants to take a shower after sightseeing.
56. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce shared gym rooms. B. To praise a technology company.
C. To support the idea of sharing gym rooms. D. To tell the future of shared gym rooms.
D
Lead poisoning (铅中毒) isn’t just an industrial-age problem. A new study says that early people took in lead long ago. This old contact may have changed the way their brains grew, worked and reacted to the world around them.
“Our tests show that lead was already around our ancestors,” said Professor Renaud Joannes-Boyau of Southern Cross University. “Their brains lived under this poison for thousands of years. It could have changed their social life, group bonds and learning skills in ways we are only starting to see.”
The team looked at Neanderthal teeth from Payre in southern France, about 250,000 years old. With a laser method they found bright lead bands inside the enamel (牙釉质). In total, seventy-three percent of all ape and human fossils from Africa, Asia and Europe showed the same marks, so the metal prevailed across ancient landscapes. The metal probably came from natural sources: lead-rich soil, volcanic dust, or limestone water in the Rhône Valley. It was not later dirt stuck to the fossils or museum dust collected over time.
Lead is a well-known neurotoxin (神经毒素); it harms learning, memory and social skills that keep groups together. Humans carry a gene called NOVA1 that controls “alternative splicing”, a tiny cut-and-paste job that lets one gene make many proteins (蛋白质). If NOVA1 is upset, problems such as autism, speech delay or schizophrenia may appear and change lives.
In the lab the scientists built tiny 3D“mini-brains” that held the Neanderthal-like form of NOVA1. When they added small amounts of lead, the speech gene FOXP2 became less active and cells grew slowly. Mini-brains with the modern human form of NOVA1 kept FOXP2 working, clearly showing greater resistance to the poisonous metal.
The results suggest that long contact with environmental lead pushed early humans to keep a protective version of NOVA1. This small but vital change may have improved survival, social talk, sharper language and group cooperation, and it still shapes how we face lead pollution in our modern industrial world today.
57. What did the new study find about lead poisoning?
A. It affected early human’s social life.
B. It was limited to the industrial age.
C. It came from fossil collection.
D. It damaged natural environment.
58. What does the word “prevailed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Resisted violently. B. Spread widely.
C. Changed frequently. D. Faded quickly.
59. What happened to FOXP2 in mini-brains with old NOVA1?
A. It grew faster. B. It changed genes.
C. It became stronger. D. It worked less.
60. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Strange Teeth Show Early Life Stories
B. Powerful Genes Cured Modern Diseases
C. Ancient Lead Exposure Shaped Human Brains
D. Clever Scientists Solved the Mystery of Ancestors

根据第二段“Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.(普通健身房为许多会员同时提供大而开放的空间,而新建的共享健身房是供个人使用的小而独立的房间,通常设置在生活区附近。)”
根据第四段中“Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code for use.(与使用共享单车类似,用户可以通过智能手机应用程序找到共享健身房,提前预订房间,然后扫描二维码使用。)”

A 58. B 59. D 60. C
根据第二段“Their brains lived under this poison for thousands of years. It could have changed their social life, group bonds and learning skills in ways we are only starting to see. (他们的大脑在这种毒素下存活了数千年。它可能以我们才开始了解的方式改变了他们的社会生活、群体联系和学习能力。)”可知,新研究发现铅中毒影响了早期人类的社会生活。故选A项。
根据第三段“In total, seventy-three percent of all ape and human fossils from Africa, Asia and Europe showed the same marks, so the metal prevailed across ancient landscapes. (总计,来自非洲、亚洲和欧洲的73%的类人猿和人类化石都显示出相同的痕迹,因此这种金属在古代各地prevailed。)”可知,大范围化石检测到铅痕迹,说明这种金属在古代各地普遍存在,所以prevailed意为“广泛传播、普遍存在”,与“Spread widely”含义一致。故选B项。
【59题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“When they added small amounts of lead, the speech gene FOXP2 became less active and cells grew slowly. (当他们添加少量铅时,语言基因FOXP2的活性降低,细胞生长缓慢。)”可知,带有古人类NOVA1基因的迷你大脑中,FOXP2 基因工作效率降低。故选D项。
【60题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是文章第一段“Lead poisoning isn’t just an industrial-age problem. A new study says that early people took in lead long ago. This old contact may have changed the way their brains grew, worked and reacted to the world around them.(铅中毒并非仅存在于工业时代的问题。一项新研究表明,远古人类很久以前就已摄入铅元素。这种早期的铅接触或许改变了他们大脑的发育方式、运作机制以及对周遭世界的反应模式。)”可知,文章开篇指出早期人类就接触铅,接着通过化石研究证实铅的广泛存在,再说明铅对神经的危害及对古人类基因的影响,最后得出“古代铅暴露塑造了人类大脑” 的结论。故选C项。
