听力部分录音稿:
(Text 1)M: Vivien, why did your car suddenly stop?
W: Hmm, it wasn’t a flat tire. It must have run out of gas.
(Text 2) M: I haven’t seen the service staff for ages. The steak wasn’t juicy today and the vegetables were overcooked.
W: I think we need to try somewhere else next time.
(Text 3) M: After high school, I’d like to study bioscience in college. What about you, Marie?
W: I’m more interested in designing green spaces along city streets and creating gardens in tourist areas.
(Text 4) M: I know you are expecting to interview Mr. Carter today but his flight was delayed.
W: Oh, no, why?
M: There was a terrible rainstorm. The interview has been moved to tomorrow morning.
(Text 5) W: I heard Mrs. Carter was honored for her work in the neighborhood last week.
M: That’s right, she doesn’t just organize monthly book exchange activities at the library. She also fixes old bikes for kids for free.
W: No wonder everyone says she’s the most helpful person here.
(Text 6)W: I’m calling to see whether your restaurant can accommodate 60 people. My company holds an annual awards dinner, and I’m in charge of this year’s event.
M: I’m not sure whether we can handle a group that large. Let me check with our chef first.
W: Alright, here’s my phone number, 5012458792. Could you call me back after lunch? I’ll be in meetings all morning.
M: Sure, I’ll talk to the chef and get back to you right after lunch.
(Text 7)
W: When are you moving out of your apartment, Jim?
M: This Saturday. Do you know anyone who might be interested in taking it?
W: Actually, I am. I’ve just changed jobs and your apartment is close to my new office.
M: Really? That’d be great. You’d like it. The balcony is big enough for a couple of chairs so you can sit out and enjoy the view. And there are lots of trees around the community. That’s actually why I chose it in the first place.
W: Sounds nice. How about the rent? I’m trying to stay within a 300-dollar budget.
M: It used to be 320 dollars a month, but the landlady recently raised it by 30 dollars, would that be okay?
W: That’s a bit high, but it still sounds worth it.
(Text 8)
W: Thanks for coming to see me off.
M: My pleasure, Anna. I know you must be excited to go home after such a long business trip. You’ll keep in touch, won’t you?
W: Of course I’ll miss you, the tasty food and the friendly coworkers who helped me pick up so much Chinese. It would all have been perfect, except for the continuous rain in Shanghai. And by the way, please let me know if your daughter ever needs any help in London.
M: I will. Thanks a lot. Oh, I've got something for you to take home.
W: This Chinese paper cutting is beautiful. What do these characters mean?
M: They mean all the best. And the Chinese Knot is for your parents.
W: Thank you. Oh, it sounds like they’re boarding. Now I have to go.
M: Have a good trip. Bye, Anna.
(Text 9)
M: This evening, we’re joined by author Amber Quentin. Amber, always a pleasure.
W: Likewise, John.
M: Your new book isn’t what people would expect from a bestselling novelist.
W: No, it takes a serious look at the world we live in and the science behind climate change.
M: It’s very insightful. I read it last week and it clears up a lot about climate change in language I can understand. To be honest, I usually get bored reading science books, but I couldn’t put this one down.
M: Thanks. I wanted to avoid scientific terms. I wanted everyone to be able to read and understand it.
M: So, what inspired you to write nonfiction?
W: My readers, I go to book signings and fan events, and it’s a topic that always comes up.
M: Did you like science at school?
W: No, I was terrible at science and math. English was my best subject.
M: What message would you like to leave our listeners with?
W: Save the planet and buy my book.
(Text 10)
W: Many people have heard about the goal of walking 10,000 steps a day. This idea dates back to a 1960s marketing campaign in Japan. But experts note that it is only a guideline. Schmidt said the average American walks about three thousand to four thousand steps a day and that working toward ten thousand can be a good goal. Setting a time goal can also be useful. Schmidt suggests dividing the recommended 150 minutes per week into 30 minutes a day, or 10 minutes three times a day for five days. During rainy or snowy weather, people can walk in malls or on treadmills. As people become more experienced walkers, they can speed up or walk-up hills while still keeping the exercise at a moderate level. If you can talk but not sing, he said that’s what we consider moderate intensity exercise. Walking has also become a social activity for many people. Walking clubs have appeared across the nation. In two thousand twenty-two thirty-one-year-old personal trainer, Brianna Joy Cohn started City Girls Who Walk. We had 250 girls show up, she said. Since then, the group has walked every Sunday for around 40 minutes, with some meeting afterwards for a meal or coffee.

Every time I enter the tea house, the waiters or waitresses will greet me with a smile on their faces and with tea pots and cups in their hands. People who go there are not all thirsty, because t houses are also good places. For business talk, i've invited my business partner to meet there. Some tea houses even have stages for performances, such a storytelling cross talk and such one Opera. Besides, like minded people pay a little money and then can sit there all day long to chat with each other. Sometimes when a group of people have an argument, peacekeeper will bring them to the tea house. It's interesting that as soon as the angry people sit down to drink tea, they almost calm down. With the help of the peacekeeper, their problems can be easily settled. The person who is wrong will prefer the tea, and then they make IT up. Becoming a nurse was practically a natural choice for little Eugenia Millender, who began her years of health service by helping her grandmother, who didn’t like needles, with her injections (注射). Born in Panama, Millender grew up in a racially (种族地) diverse family and community. Her mother was Afro-Latina Panamanian, and her father was indigenous (本地的) Guna Panamanian.
When Millender was 12, she arrived in Brooklyn with her mother, hoping to bring her a better life. They experienced poverty, and Millender saw the access and quality of health care people received. “My mother didn’t speak English, and when she tried to get care, people ignored her,” she says. Then she moved to Florida as a teenager and joined the army after high school, which allowed her to earn her undergraduate and master’s degrees in nursing. Working in emergency departments, which often cared for the uninsured, she saw families struggling with the same challenges her mother had.
“You know they don’t have the resources to take care of their loved ones once they leave the hospital, or they don’t understand what the doctors and nurses are telling them because they speak a different language or an indigenous language,” she says.
Now as a professor at Florida State University College of Nursing, Millender co-founded an institute (机构) and serves as its co-director. The institute focuses on addressing the causes of health unfairness — from language and cultural barriers (障碍) to mental-health challenges. Drawing on her own experiences, she spends time learning from communities about their needs and the difficulties they face. That includes incorporating, rather than ignoring, cultural beliefs, and community-based programmes that connect people with health care, often for the first time.
Recently, Millender has seen her work come full circle with programmes she has started in her native Panama to improve health care for indigenous people. “I feel very lucky, so I have to give back,” she says.
24. What inspired Millender to become a nurse?
A. Her childhood experiences.
B. Her parents’ expectations.
C. Her love for science and medicine.
D. Her desire to get out of poverty.
25. What challenge did Millender’s mother face in accessing health care?
A. The language barrier.
B. The unstable job.
C. The lack of personal insurance.
D. The lack of family companionship.
26. Which word best describes Millender?
A. Honest. B. Determined. C. Strict. D. Quiet.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Hard Life of Newcomers in America
B. Ways to Overcome Language Barriers in Hospitals
C. A Successful Professor in American Medical Colleges
D. A Nurse Working to Break Health Unfairness
C
Most people enjoy variety. We like to eat different foods from meal to meal. We wear different clothes. We become bored when there is little variety. However, there’s one place where we tend to dislike variety, and that’s in each other. We often feel uncomfortable with people who practise different habits, or hold beliefs or values that we do not share.
There are reasons for this. When we meet new and different things, our brain works a bit harder than usual. When we’re learning, our nerve cells require more resources, such as water, salt, and various other chemicals. This extra metabolic (新陈代谢的) activity can feel unsettling and unpleasant. And it can feel worse if our nervous system is already under pressure.
This sort of variation may be uncomfortable for individuals, but it’s important to the survival of any species. If all finches (雀科鸣鸟) were the same, for example, and their environment changed in some significant, harmful ways, like an increase in the temperature or a decrease in water, all of them would be equally affected and the species might become extinct. This insight (洞察力) into variation comes from Charles Darwin, and it’s known as population thinking. The idea of “survival of the fittest” shows that individuals must vary. Some are more suited than others for a given environment, making it easier for them to survive, grow, and reproduce. Variation is therefore a requisite for natural selection to work.
Dealing with the vast variety of humankind can be demanding, but it’s a good investment (投资), sort of like exercise for your brain. When you meet someone who are different from you, treat your discomfort as a signal to be curious and learn instead of a signal of a problem. Don’t hold that the other person should be silenced. Finally, this mindset can make you more flexible in adapting to challenging situations.
28. Which of the following might make people feel uncomfortable?
A. Socializing with people from different cultures.
B. Sharing travelling experiences with others.
C. Taking a trip to a foreign country.
D. Having an adventure in the wild.
29. Why can new and different things make people feel unsettling and unpleasant?
A. They require more physical efforts.
B. They need more resources for nerve cells.
C. They are often harmful to people’s health.
D. They put pressure on people’s nervous system.
30. Which of the following word can replace the underlined word “requisite” in Paragraph 3?
A. Replacement. B. Challenge.
C. Requirement. D. Drive.
31. What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A. Why we should get along with people different from us.
B. How we should treat the differences we find in others.
C. How we can benefit from seeking variation.
D. Why we tend to chase and enjoy variation.

Using AI to help write a message to a friend is not a good idea — at least if your friend finds out about the use of AI, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that people in the study believed that a friend who used AI to write them a message didn’t put in as much effort as a friend who wrote a message themselves. That may be understandable, but the effect goes beyond the message itself, said Bingjie Liu, lead author of the study. “After they get an AI message, our participants (参与者) feel less satisfied with their relationship with their friend and feel more uncertain about where they stand,” Liu said.
But to be fair to AI, it wasn’t just the use of technology that turned people off. “People want their partners or friends to make an effort to come up with their own message without help from AI or other people,” Liu said.
“People want to know how much you want to invest in your friendship and if they feel you are cutting corners by using AI to help, that’s not good,” Liu explained.
Of course, most people won’t tell a friend that they used AI to help write a message, Liu said. But she noted that as ChatGPT becomes more popular, people may start doing a Turing Test in their minds as they read messages from friends and others. Turing Test is sometimes used to refer to people wondering if they can tell whether an action was taken by a computer or a person.
