Tanghulu is a special and sweet childhood memory of many Chinese. You can see people selling Tanghulu on Beijing’s streets in winter. Could it be possible to spend your nights sleeping thousands of times, each time for only four seconds? Does it sound like a terrible dream?
Well, that’s how chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) parents sleep.
Like other penguins, chinstrap penguins spend much of their time in the water, catching fish to eat. But when they raise their young penguins, they return to land. They lay eggs in nests made of small rocks. One parent keeps the nest safe, while the other hunts for food. For one thing, brown skuas (贼鸥) like to attack (攻击) the eggs and young penguins. Besides, other penguins nearby may take rocks from the nest, putting the young in danger. It can be dangerous for the young if their parents get a good night’s sleep. However, staying awake for 24 hours a day is hard for penguin parents.
Faced with these problems, chinstrap penguins have found an unusual way to solve the problem. When scientists first noticed chinstrap penguins kept blinking (眨眼) their eyes, they wondered if more was happening than just blinking. So they studied the brain activity of the penguins and recorded the birds on video. The study showed that in fact the tired parents were sleeping very often and for a very short time Each sleep lasts only about four seconds. By taking over 10,000 short sleeps a day, the penguins get a total of about 11 hours of sleep a day. How surprising!
It’s not certain if the short sleeps help the penguins feel truly rested, or if they’re just enough to keep them going. The scientists don’t know if the penguins sleep this way at other times of the year, or only when they’re raising their young. They also don’t know if other kinds of penguins have similar sleeping habits. Further study is needed to learn more about them.
57. What problems do the chinstrap penguin parents face when raising their young?
① It is hard for them to stay awake all day long.
② They may meet danger when hunting for food.
③ Other penguins might take rocks from the nest.
④ Skuas may attack the eggs and young penguins.
A. ①③④ B. ①②④ C. ①②③ D. ②③④
58. How did the scientists find out the short sleeps of chinstrap penguins?
A. By taking photos of their babies. B. By following them to find food.
C. By watching their eyes carefully. D. By studying their brain activities.
59. What may scientists study further about chinstrap penguins?
A. If they sleep in such a way all year round.
B. The living places where they choose to stay.
C. Different kinds of food they like to hunt for.
D. Ways to stop enemies from hurting their eggs.
60. The passage is most probably from ________.
A. an animal care guide B. a penguin keeper’s diary
C. a classic animal novel D. an animal science magazine

South China is famous for its karst landforms. In many places, tall stone hills rise from the ground like towers. Some rocks look like trees, animals or old castles. Over a very long time, this special landform was made slowly by rain and underground water. Because of its unusual shapes, many people feel as if they are walking through a natural stone museum.
One of the best-known places is the Stone Forest in Yunnan Province. It is a “must see” because visitors can walk between thousands of grey stone peaks. Some peaks are high and straight, while others have strange shapes. When sunlight falls on them, the stones look different from morning to evening. Many visitors like taking photos there, but guides often remind them to stay on safe paths.
Karst landforms can also be seen in Guangxi, Guizhou and Chongqing. In Guangxi, green hills stand beside clear rivers, so many tourists enjoy taking boat trips there. In Guizhou, visitors may see deep caves and natural bridges. In Chongqing, they may find large holes in the ground. These places show the great power of nature.
To protect these landforms, local governments are trying to ask tourists not to climb dangerous rocks or leave rubbish behind. Good protection makes it possible for more people to enjoy this wonderful natural beauty in the future.

My Grade Seven Journey
Hello everyone! Welcome to my Vlog about my great Grade 7 journey.
In Grade 7, I had many wonderful memories. First, I had a wonderful friend. At first, I was shy and did not talk much. My friend often helped me with my study and played with me after class. Thanks to her, I became more outgoing and confident.
I also had a wonderful trip. Last spring, our class went to a beautiful park. We climbed the hill, took photos and shared food together. I learned that nature is full of beauty and teamwork can make us happy.
My Grade 7 journey was short but meaningful. I will remember these special days forever.
Thank you for watching!
