A Wildfire Changed My Life
Twelve-year-old Kini Varona was relaxing at home in Lahaina, a beautiful town on the Hawaiian island of Maui, on August 8, 2023. Outside, strong winds were howling. Then Kini saw dark smoke rising in the distance. Since Kini’s parents were both firefighters, she knew: wildfire.
Kini’s mom was already at the fire station. Her dad told her and her twin brother Kimo to pack for the night. Their two cats, Pumpkin and Pepper, were outside, but Kini wasn’t worried — they were outdoor cats. As they drove away, Kini watched the smoke growing larger. She didn’t know it would destroy her world.
Lahaina was a lovely town with green mountains and white beaches. But climate change had brought longer, hotter summers and more droughts to Hawaii. Dry grass could easily catch fire. Scientists called it “a ticking time bomb”.
On August 8, the “bomb” exploded (爆炸). Powerful winds swept across the island. Fallen power lines set the dry grass on fire. At first, firefighters got the fire under control. But strong winds brought the fire back. A wall of fire moved towards the town faster than a car.
Kini and her family escaped, but their house was destroyed. Over 2,000 buildings were damaged and 100 died—the worst U.S. wildfire in 100 years. Two weeks later, the family visited their broken home. Kini was shocked to see everything destroyed. Then—a flash of orange! Pumpkin was alive! Weeks later, they found Pepper too.
After the fire, Maui came together. Volunteers gave out food and clothing, and families opened their homes to those who had lost everything. One month later, Kini joined a traditional Hawaiian ocean ceremony (仪式) for the dead. “It made me grateful that Lahaina is not being forgotten,” she says.

28. What does “a ticking time bomb” most likely mean?

C. A warning system for fires. D. A fire that had already started.
29. When Kini saw “a flash of orange,” she most likely felt _________.
A. calm and relaxed B. angry and puzzled

All Grown Up
By Alison Wassell
① I hadn’t seen Gillian for months, not since we started secondary school. I was spending the night at her house and couldn’t wait. But when she opened the door, she looked so different — wide jeans, short hair. “You look different,” I said. “You don’t,” she grinned.
② Then I saw Tracey, Gillian’s new friend. “Nice dress,” she said, but I could tell she was laughing at me. Later, I sat on the stairs while Tracey made phone calls for fun. That was when I heard them talking about me. “She’s a wet blanket1,” Tracey said. Gillian didn’t disagree. “We used to be friends, but she seems really young now.”
③ I ran upstairs in tears and almost bumped2 into Helen, Gillian’s big sister. I thought she would be angry, but she put her hands gently on my shoulders. “You look upset. Want to talk?” she asked softly.
④ She led me to her room. “Sit down,” she said, pointing at a beanbag. I told her everything — how Gillian had changed, how Tracey was mean, how I felt upset. Helen listened quietly. “Gillian is still your friend. She’s just trying to impress Tracey. She’s becoming a moody3 teenager. It happens to all of us.” Her words made me feel grown up, because she listened to me like I was important.
⑤ A minute later, Gillian appeared. “I was mean to you, too. I’m sorry, Alison. You’re my real friend, and I was terrible.”
⑥ “It’s okay. Friends argue sometimes. It doesn’t mean we stop being friends.”
⑦ Helen smiled. “Hot chocolate, anyone?” She put her arms around me, and the three of us went downstairs together.
⑧ Years later, we are still friends. We meet every week and never run out of things to talk about. I never forgot that true friendship means ____________.

句中had better not do sth.
此处固定短语stare at,意为“盯着看”,at符合语境;排除in“在……里”和on“在……上”。
【6题详解】
句意:她的邻居,一位老裁缝,也失去了他的工作室,但他们两个都没有放弃。
根据“Her neighbor, an old tailor, also lost his workshop”和“but”及后文的努力重建可知,两人都没放弃,neither“两者都不”符合语境。

根据句意此处表示工作的目的,应该用so that“以便”引导的目的状语从句。
【8题详解】
句意:加油!只做你自己。
此处考查固定短语be yourself,意为“你自己”,此处需要用反身代词yourself 。
【9题详解】
