“The greatest scientists are artists as well,” said Albert Einstein, one of the greatest physicists and an amateur pianist and violinist.
For Einstein, insight did not come from logic or mathematics. Instead, it came from intuition (直觉) and inspiration. As he told one friend, “When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I find that the gift of imagination has meant more to me than any talent for absorbing absolute knowledge. All great achievements of science must start from intuitive knowledge. Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
But how did art differ from science for Einstein? Surprisingly, it wasn’t the content of an idea, or its subject, that determined whether something was art or science, but how the idea was expressed. If what is seen and experienced is described in the language of logic, then it is science. If it is communicated and recognized intuitively, then it is art. Einstein himself worked intuitively and expressed himself logically. That’s why he said that great scientists were also artists. Einstein first described his intuitive thought processes at a physics conference in Kyoto in 1922 when he indicated that he used images and feelings to solve his problems and found words, logical symbols or mathematical equations later.
Einstein also credited his scientific insight and intuition mainly to music. “If I were not a physicist,” he once said, “I would probably be a musician. I often think in music and I see my life in terms of music. I get most joy in life out of music. Whenever I feel that I have come to the end of the road or into a difficult situation in my work, I would bury myself in music, and that would usually solve all my difficulties.”
Music provided Einstein with a connection between time and space which both combine spatial and structural aspects. “The theory of relativity just occurred to me, and music is the driving force behind this intuition”, said Einstein. “My parents had me study the violin from the time I was six. My new discovery is the result of musical perception (感知).”
24. What did Einstein believe as to imagination?
A. It is the most important factor in science.
B. It negates absolute knowledge.
C. It brings about better scientific insights.
D. It serves as the foundation of logic.
25. How would Einstein do science according to paragraph 3?
A. Imagine a possibility → Have an idea → Describe it with logic.
B. Indicate a feeling → Solve the problem → Express artistically.
C. Communicate → Recognize the subject → Explain the theory.
D. Create an artwork → Get inspired → Put the theory to words.
26. What role does music mainly serve as for Einstein?
A. An addiction. B. An escape. C. An enjoyment. D. An inspiration.
27. What can we learn from Einstein’s case with music?
A. One is never too old to learn.
B. A sense of art goes a long way.
C. Motivation drives innovation.
D. Music heals a wounded heart.

Do you often use the words “tapestry” “delve” or “testament” in English? Many of us would say no. These words aren’t among the “Top 500 spoken words” — a list of the most common English words. However, these words are becoming more common in some written content, as a study in 2024 found that five percent of all articles published on a research site used the word “delve.” In 2022, it was less than one percent.
Since ChatGPT was released to the public in November 2022, we’ve seen that artificial intelligence (AI) favors certain words. Why does ChatGPT prefer these words? The answer is actually very human. While ChatGPT seems to think for itself, what it really does is analyze a very large amount of human-generated information, and use the data to put out answers to our enquiry (询问). It doesn’t actually understand what it’s telling us.
The process of rating AI responses, as part of training the software, is called “reinforcement (强化) learning from human feedback”, and this provides the first clue about why ChatGPT favors certain word. It’s not cheap to employ a lot of testers to rate thousands of responses from AI. So, big companies outsource these jobs to lower-income countries, often places where English is not the first language. One such country that offers cheap labor is Nigeria, and in Nigerian English, “delve” is a common word in professional settings. So, when Nigerian testers tell AI which responses sound natural, their own linguistic preferences come through.
As AI-generated content becomes more common, will it also affect the way we speak to each other? In some ways, AI has already left its mark. Of course, language is a living thing, often affected by current events and by new technology. The point is that language is always updating itself, and how we use language is affected by the people we talk to and by the media we consume. As AI-generated media spreads, it is possible, even likely that AI will affect the development of our own vocabulary.
28. Why are the words like “delve” or “testament” mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show the variety of English words.
B. To warn about language pollution by AI.
C. To introduce a research on AI impacts.
D. To indicate a new trend in word choices.
29. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?
A. AI depends on human input. B. AI thinks like a human brain.
C. AI works for human’s benefit. D. AI understands human preference.
30. What may be the root cause of the phenomenon?
A. Technical integration. B. Natural selection. C. Economic consideration. D. National competition.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward AI’s influence on language?
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Cautious.
D
Our oceans are full of sophisticated (精密的), perfect traps: nets, hooks, fishing lines. Designed to capture animals destined for our dinner tables, they often catch other wildlife too. This accidental harvest is known as “bycatch”, and every year it kills millions of marine (海洋的) animals. It is also a tricky problem for fishermen, since trapped creatures can damage equipment, costing time and money.
“There are not very many conservation (保护) issues where conservationists, consumers, fishermen and resource users all want the same thing,” says marine biologist Matthew Savoca. “Everyone involved wants less bycatch.”
Some bycatch prevention methods have already shown promise in field trials. A study in northern Peru’s Sechura Bay, for example, showed a turtle bycatch reduction of more than 60% thanks to LED-illuminated (照明) nets. Another approach is pingers — devices attached to fishing gear that send sounds to warn echo-locating animals away. In three Norwegian fisheries, pingers reduced bycatch of harbor porpoise (鼠海豚) by 94%.
But these solutions have yet to be carried out on a large scale. The devices can be expensive, and the methods are not without downsides. LED lights may reduce target fish catch. Pingers are also linked with an increase in bycatch of seals, which seem to associate the sound with a potential meal.
A low-tech approach may help small-scale fisheries reduce the bycatch of echo-locating animals: fixing plastic water bottles to their nets. Detecting thin, fine nets is difficult for echo-locators like dolphins, but water bottles are a more easily detectable obstacle (障碍) that could help them avoid the nets.
For a solution to work, policies and regulations need to be put in place and enforced. Just as important, preventive measures need to be practical for fishermen and not add extra time and money to do the job. As marine sustainability scientist Lekelia Jenkins says, the smaller the change, the more likely fishermen are to adopt it.
The human side of the issue also needs to be recognized. “Emotionally, fishermen around the world are beaten up and beaten down,” Jenkins says. “We say, ‘You’re the problem. You’re catching sea turtles and whales.’” She suggests that fishermen should be empowered and included in the discussions and development of solutions.
32. What does Matthew Savoca mean?
A. Fishermen are mainly to blame.
B. Marine conservation unites people.
C. Reduction of bycatch is a shared wish.
D. The current action lacks participation.
33. Why is pinger a less preferred solution?
A. It scares many animals away. B. It works at an extra price.
C. The fishing gear is too costly. D. The fish catch is too small.
34. What makes dolphins benefit from the plastic bottles?
A. A lower technology cost. B. A smaller scale of fishery.
C. A less accessible barrier. D. A more obvious reminder.
35. What would Lekelia Jenkins agree with concerning the solutions?
A. All voices should be heard. B. Fishermen are the main problem.
C. Policies must be enforced. D. Sufficient investment is the key.

One of the most fun parts of being a parent is watching children discover the world around them like a scientist. 36
This loss of interest may partly come from small language cues (提示) they hear from parents, media or in school. 37 All kids can do science, but over time, they begin to think of being a “scientist” as something only meant for certain kinds of kids.
The good news is that the small language cues can also be employed to promote engagement in science. 38 Students whose teachers use more action-focused language stayed longer in a novel science game, compared to students whose teachers used more identity-focused language.
However, around adolescence (青春期), teens are actively trying on and eventually forming different identities for themselves. 39 For example, cuing a future identity (e.g., scientist, doctor) that is based on science motivated middle schoolers to do more homework, and was associated with higher grades. That might be because if teens think of themselves as scientists, then they are willing to do what it takes to be whom they want to become.
40 These activities also just happen to be critical pieces of the scientific process. Emphasizing these actions when children are younger might help them persist in hard tasks or lessons. But as children get older, gain experience in these activities and start forming ideas of whom they want to become, emphasizing future identities that are science-dependent might also be helpful in maintaining an interest in science.
How these two versions of language cues might work together (or not) is yet to be tested, but perhaps this is some science to be done by the parents’ future scientists.
A. They treat science as an identity rather than a process.
B. So sometimes identity-focused language may also help.
C. But these language cues can also encourage and inspire our children.
D. Yet over time parents can find their child less interested in exploration.
E. Treating science as actions that we do, for example, can protect children’s motivation.
F. Parents all want their children to enjoy exploring and making discoveries for themselves.
G. Recognizing the value of science will help develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

For many students, science projects are not just assignments but opportunities to solve real-world problems. The 2023 Thermo Fisher JIC competition showcased this spirit. Thirty finalists presented creative solutions to 41 issues, from environmental pollution to public health challenges.
One 42 participant was 14-year-old Amritha Praveen from Illinois. She built a system that uses people’s 43 to music to recommend songs that put them at ease. Amritha’s inspiration came from her lifelong passion for music. A violin player, she noticed how different music types caused 47 reactions. This 48 drove her to seek an objective method to rate the relaxation when listening to different types of music. Her research found two key factors leading to relaxation: musical key and timbre — the latter being a(n) 49 discovery. “Timbre’s role surprised me,” she admitted. “Timbre 50 the tone color of sound.” Looking ahead, Amritha plans to expand her project by studying how different types of instruments affect bodily responses and using brain waves to 51 how people respond to music. “Understanding the brain’s role could help 52 why music moves us,” she said.

Molly had always followed Sarah. Since fifth grade, she copied Sarah’s hairstyle, bought the same sneakers, and laughed at the same jokes. Sarah was the queen of the class — everyone wanted to be her friend, and Molly felt lucky to be chosen. Every morning, she checked what Sarah wore and dressed accordingly. She practiced Sarah’s way of flipping her hair and even changed her ringtone to match Sarah’s favorite song. Her mother once asked, “Why don’t you wear your own blue sweater anymore? You used to love it.” Molly just shrugged. Being like Sarah felt safe.
One rainy afternoon, Molly walked toward the library to return a book. The hallway was quiet except for voices behind the bookshelf. She recognized Sarah’s laugh immediately. Curious, Molly stepped closer, hidden by the shelf. “Honestly,” Sarah said, “Molly tries so hard to dress like me, but she just looks cheap. Did you see that pink shirt yesterday? So last season.” Another girl giggled. “And her grades? A D in science? Embarrassing.” Sarah snorted (嗤笑). “Why do you even hang out with her?” There was a pause. “Because she does my homework. Duh.”
Molly’s heart shattered into a thousand pieces. She backed away, tears blurring her vision. The book slipped from her hands and hit the floor with a loud thud. She didn’t pick it up. She just ran.
For days, Molly wore her hoodie (帽衫) low over her face, ate lunch alone, and stopped talking to everyone. She stared at her reflection in the mirror and hated what she saw. Stupid. Ugly. Worthless. She deleted all her photos with Sarah from her phone. Her grades dropped further. Even her teacher asked if she was feeling okay. Molly just shook her head.
Justin noticed. He sat two rows behind her in computer class. He wasn’t popular, but he was kind. One afternoon, he found Molly sitting alone on the bleachers (露天看台) after school, staring at nothing. He hesitated, then sat down next to her. “Hey,” he said softly. “You look sad. Want to talk?” Molly shook her head without looking up. Justin didn’t push. He sat there in silence for a long minute.

The Greatest Invention In My View
Of all the four inventions, I firmly hold the view that the Internet deserves the title of the greatest invention in the past 80 years.
First of all, the Internet has broken the limits of time and space. It connects every corner of the globe, turning the whole world into a global village. We can communicate with friends abroad instantly, get access to rich learning resources and do online business conveniently. Besides, nearly all modern technologies, including AI, depend on the Internet to run and develop. Without the Internet, the digital age we live in would never come into being. What’s more, it greatly improves people’s quality of life, making public services more accessible.
Given all the above reasons, I sincerely hope you will vote for the Internet. Let’s make it the winner of this selection.

Paragraph 1: Then he pulled out his tablet and opened an AI tool. He typed words about losing herself by copying others and read out the warm reply from the AI. It told Molly that everyone has unique beauty and she didn’t need to live in someone else’s shadow. He also invited her to design her own hairstyle and clothes with the help of the AI. Gradually, Molly poured out all her pain and sadness.
Paragraph 2: That afternoon changed Molly. She dug out her beloved blue sweater and wore it proudly. She stopped copying Sarah and focused on improving her science grades. She made true friends who appreciated her real personality. She finally understood that being herself was the greatest happiness.

(Text 1)
W: Excuse me, I’d like to find a quiet spot where I can sit down and finish my work at hand.
M: OK, madam. There’s a seating area near the inquiry desk.
(Text 2)
M: Hey, Susan, we need some new blood. Could you please draft a job advertisement?
W: Sure, Greg. What details should it include?
M: Just cover the position, qualifications and the application process and the deadline for hiring is next Friday. Thanks a lot.
(Text 3)
M: Having a TV to watch sports games on is great. I watched a volleyball match that took place in Australia yesterday.
W: That sounds great! But can we watch the football game today?
M: Sure. It’s on after the basketball game, which is nearly finished.
(Text 4)
M: We’d better hurry, Jasmine. It’s 4:30 pm now.
W: Come on. Our train leaves at 7:30 pm. It usually takes us an hour to get to the train station.
M: What a relief! I thought it would leave at 6: 30 pm. Well, in that case, we can set off in an hour.
W: OK.
(Text 5)
M: We collected 18 kilos of paper last week, not bad.
W: Better, but the goal was 25. Let’s place a collection box outside the lecture hall.
M: Smart. I’ll make a poster that says “One Sheet Helps”.
(Text 6)
M: Can I borrow your phone for a second? Mine is dead, and I can’t find my charger.
W: Sure
M: Thanks. Hey, what s wrong with your screen? It’s all dark and the colors look strange.
W: Oh! I’ve been using an app called “Sunset” to help me sleep at night.
M: Really? How?
W: Well, studies show that too much blue light from screens can make sleeping difficult. So, in the evenings, the app adjusts the screen to cancel it out.
M: Oh, interesting. Does it help?
W: Yeah, I think so! I also listen to white noise, which helps me fall asleep, too.
(Text 7)
W: Hi, Frank. I didn’t expect to see you here. Are you buying some new furniture for your apartment?
M: No, Chloe. My friend and I are starting our own business. We’ve been busy decorating our office recently. I’m here to look for some office tables and chairs.
W: Starting your own business?
M: Yeah. We design clothing for our customers.
W: So you quit your job, didn’t you?
M: Yeah. I just couldn’t imagine myself selling cars forever.
W: Do you know anything about clothing design? I remember you majored in English literature in college.
M: Well, my friend has been in that field for over a decade and he is willing to teach me everything.
W: So brave of you. I’ve wanted to write a book for a long time since my kid went to college. I even looked for information about how to write on the Internet. But I just don’t know if I’m capable...
M: Have a little faith in yourself, Chloe. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
(Text 8)
M: Good afternoon. This is David calling. I've learned about your winter camp online, and you will offer several sessions for families. May I know some details about it, please?
W: Sure. Our campsite is located right in the heart of the Adirondack Wilderness and our camp is coeducational. It’s a great opportunity for children to enjoy fresh mountain air.
M: Good. How long does it last, please?
W: It depends. Our 2-, 3-, 5-, and 7-week sessions allow for any busy family to be able to craft the perfect session length.
M: Great. Now could you tell me about the activities?
W: OK. Activities span from athletics, arts, water sports, and adventure. Evenings settle down by the campfire and content. Participants can enjoy the activities under the guidance of dedicated leaders and experienced counselors.
M: What about the age requirement?
W: We have groups for different ages. Kids from 7 to 16 can come.
M: Thank you, madam. I think I’ll sleep on it and give my answer tomorrow.
(Text 9)
M: Honey, it’s me. Guess what? I bought two tickets for tonight. It’s a musical called Rebecca. Many people said it was great. I’ll pick you up when I get off work. And we can have dinner first...
W: No, Robert. I’m afraid I’ll have to work overtime tonight.
M: Why? You told me this morning that you wouldn’t have much work to do today.
W: Well, I wasn’t busy until Fiona asked me to help her take over her unfinished job. She asked for three days’ leave from our boss.
M: Three days? What’s her excuse this time? Is she feeling unwell or does her landlord ask her to move out immediately again?
W: No, she will go to her friend’s wedding ceremony in Italy.
M: You know, it just makes me so cross. All arrangements have been upset. No one should take responsibility for her job! Doesn't she realize you also have a life?
W: Don’t be mad, honey. Think something exciting. We’re going to the concert this weekend, remember?

W: Good evening, everyone. In tonight’s program, let’s talk about the American chestnut. At one time, the American chestnut was among the most widespread trees in the eastern United States. The wood was used to cover the walls of homes and schools. The leaves helped add nutrients to the soil. And men on street corners sold chestnuts cooked over an open fire. However, in the late 19th century, some East Asian varieties of chestnut trees brought to the US carried a disease that killed almost all American chestnuts. The disease harms them when the small trees start to develop fully, while East Asian varieties are resistant to it. Researchers have tried to save American chestnuts by cross-breeding, or mixing them with one kind of Chinese chestnut that can fight off the disease. The trees the researchers have grown could not resist the disease well enough to become large and healthy trees. That is why scientists are now trying to combine two methods: cross-breeding and genetically changing the genes of American chestnut trees.
A scientific team concluded a changing climate and warmer temperatures may also make restoring the chestnut difficult in some areas. For now, researchers know their work might not be successful in their lifetimes. The process has been slow. Linda McGuigan helped support the research for years. She said, “The project moves on, lives on. I want to do something good for the future, for my children.”
