Sample 1
Overcome Barriers, Embrace Reading
Last week, our school English newspaper carried out a survey among students on barriers to spare-time reading.
According to the pie chart, 53% students regard academic pressure as the primary barrier, followed by digital distraction, accounting for 23%. Besides, poor reading atmosphere and lack of interest make up 12% and 11% respectively.
To address these issues, the school can ease students’ academic pressure and organize book-sharing activities. Meanwhile, students should limit excessive use of digital products for more spare-time reading. (80 words)
Sample 2
Overcome Barriers, Embrace Reading
Last week, our school English newspaper conducted a survey among students on the factors preventing students from reading in their spare time.
As the pie chart illustrates, over half of the students regard academic pressure as the primary barrier, followed by digital distraction, accounting for 23%. Besides, poor reading atmosphere and lack of interest make up 12% and 11% respectively.
This worrying tendency deserves our attention. For the school, arranging proper study tasks can help alleviate students’ pressure and allow them more time to read. Meanwhile, it is advisable to establish reading corners and organize book-sharing events regularly. As for students, they’d better set aside time for reading by curbing the use of electronic devices. Only with joint efforts can students cultivate good reading habits. (125 words)
第二节(满分25分)
Saturday morning arrived and the yard was alive with people. Long before the yard sale started, people had come to help. Doreen and some neighbors helped Mr. Bower sort out all the items neatly while others helped clean up the garage. Around 9:00, customers came one after another. They gathered around and gently picked up each object, laughter and friendly bargaining filling the air. With a bright smile on his face, Mr. Bower was busy sharing interesting stories behind his old things with every visitor.
By midafternoon, Mr. Bower was amazed to find his garage tidy. Brimming with delight and gratitude, he hurried indoors and brought out homemade cookies and cool lemonade for all the warm-hearted neighbors. Everyone gathered in the sunny yard and enjoyed each others’ sincere company, like a big happy family. Doreen watched the lively and heart-warming scene, overwhelmed by pride and satisfaction. Her kind suggestion not only helped Mr. Bower practice letting go of old things and gain extra income, but also brought the whole community closer.

M: Excuse me, is this the check-in counter for Air Canada to Mexico? I’ve already got my ticket.
W: Yes, sir. I’m afraid there’s an extra charge for your pet. And please remember not to open the pet box during the flight.
(Text 2)
M: Hello, is this the phone company? Can you hear me clearly?
W: Yes, sir. How can I help you?
M: There’s something wrong with my phone. I’ve been hearing a strange noise. It might be out of order.
W: Certainly, sir. Let me put you through to our repairs department.
(Text 3)
M: I think we need a new microwave. Ours is not heating food anymore.
W: I saw a good one online. It has decent reviews and is within our budget.
M: Sounds perfect. Has it got any smart features, like voice control or a defrost mode?
(Text 4)
M: Hello, I’d like to rent a car for a week starting tomorrow. Do you have any electric ones?
W: Yes, they run at $50 per day, but you’ll need to get the insurance, which is an extra $15 daily.
M: Okay, here’s my license.
(Text 5)
W: Hello, Mike, this is Mary, your landlady. I just wanted to remind you that you’ll have to switch the water and electricity accounts over to your name by this weekend.
M: Okay, thanks for letting me know.
(Text 6)
W: I’d like to do my medical check-up next week. What does Dr. Hamilton’s schedule look like?
M: Let me check ... It seems he’s available on Monday afternoon and Thursday morning.
W: Oh, Monday might work. Are there any specific preparations I need to do?
M: Did the receptionist mention anything?
W: No, I don’t recall her saying anything, but I’ll call back to check. Do you know how long the check-up usually takes?
M: It generally takes about an hour, including the consultation.
(Text 7)
W: Good morning, Student Job Center. How can I help you?
M: Hello, this is Jason from the Engineering College. I’d like to get a part-time job for this term.
W: Okay, we do have something for you. First, there is a truck driving position in a furniture company. It’s night work and requires reliable driving skills.
M: Well, night work is perfect, but I don’t even have a driver’s license.
W: Hmm, that’s impossible then. The other option is a job as a data entry clerk. You work only on weekends and get a fixed salary. But you should be familiar with keyboarding, and having personal transport is a must.
M: That’s no problem. I’ve got a bicycle to travel around with.
(Text 8)
M: Jenny, I know you enjoy competing. What’s the most unforgettable competition you’ve ever entered?
W: That would be the debate competition for sure. I took part in it last year. It was organized by the National High School Debate Association. More than one hundred schools participated in the
competition. Even some government officials were present. I was part of our school’s debate team.
M: Sounds like a big event. What was the topic?
W: We debated whether AI does more harm than good to society. I was on the opposing side, arguing that AI actually benefits society more.
M: Wow, that’s really interesting. But it doesn’t seem related to your major—you study history, while AI is so modern. Was the topic difficult for you?
W: Actually, no. We talked to a computer science teacher to better understand the topic. He is an expert in AI and often gives lectures at universities. He shared some research findings with us, and that was really helpful.
(Text 9)

Hello everyone, and welcome to Miami! I know a lot of you came here for the beaches, the shopping, and the sports. But Miami has so much more. One place you cannot miss is Little Havana, and we’re heading there right now. While you enjoy the view outside the window, let me tell you about today’s activities there. As soon as we step off the bus, you’re going to hear the music in the streets and see the colorful art on the walls. We’ll pass by the Cuban Memorial Plaza, where you can learn a little about Cuba’s history. And just a few steps away, on the Walkway of the Stars, you’ll see the names of some famous entertainers. And lucky for us, today is Friday! That means we get to enjoy Cultural Fridays tonight. The streets will close to cars and open up to music, dancing, food stands, and live bands. It’s going to be a real street party. And if you love architecture, there’s a walking tour at 7 p.m. Remember this: Little Havana is a mix of cultures that makes Miami truly special. Go once and you’ll be planning your next visit before you even leave.

Yamilée Toussaint has always been passionate about two seemingly unrelated things: dancing and mathematics. When she studied mechanical engineering at MIT, she was also head of the dance team. It was there that she saw for the first time that black women were not pursuing education in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). She was one of only two black women in her major, an experience that highlighted the need for greater diversity in these career fields.
While teaching math at a high school in eastern Brooklyn in 2008, Toussaint encountered many students who had negative views of math. This motivated her to find a way to change young people’s mindset, especially for girls of color, and empower them to embrace STEM.
In 2012, she created STEM From Dance, a nonprofit program that uses dance — a confidence-building and culturally-relevant strategy — to grow the number of girls of color with STEM degrees. Most of these girls don’t dream of being scientists or engineers, not because they can’t, but because of a lack of confidence, preparation and awareness of STEM careers.
Rather than teach dance and STEM separately, the program combines the two. Through dance, the girls are able to create an atmosphere that feels comfortable. Working in small groups, the girls design dance routines that include STEM elements and also create songs through computer science. Through the hands-on projects, the girls begin to see themselves as programmers, engineers, and innovators.
On the final day of the program, the girls perform in front of family and friends. For Toussaint, this is an important day she hopes all of the girls carry with them. “We want them to remember they are celebrated for doing things in STEM,” Toussaint said. “So, when they face hard math problems, they’re reminded, ‘I can do hard things.’ I believe the solution to some of the world’s most pressing problems relies on these girls being in the room because they have a different set of life experiences.”
24. What did Toussaint come to realize when studying at MIT?
A. STEM fields saw little black female participation.
B. Dance had the power to improve her STEM study.
C. There were diverse career choices after graduation.
D. Most black women were unwilling to study STEM.
25. What inspired Toussaint to found STEM From Dance?
A. Her academic experience at MIT.
B. Girls’ strong desire to learn STEM.
C. Students’ negative attitude toward math.
D. Her leadership of the school dance team.
26. Why are STEM and dance taught together in Toussaint’s program?
A. To train professional dancers nationwide.
B. To attract girls of color from urban areas.
C. To arouse students’ interest in innovation.
D. To make learning engaging and accessible.
27. What message does Toussaint probably convey in the last paragraph?
A. Team work guarantees future success.
B. Dance makes learning more enjoyable.
C. Young people can solve pressing issues.
D. Self-belief allows one to brave hardships.

Contrails (航迹云) produced by aircraft engines are thought to cause more warming than the carbon dioxide planes emit. A trial involving thousands of flights between the US and Europe has found planes produce fewer contrails if they follow flight paths recommended by an AI to reduce their global warming impact.
Dinesh Sanekommu at Google and his colleagues have used an AI contrail-forecasting tool to give routing advice in a randomized control trial of more than 2400 real American Airlines flights. The trial involved flights heading eastward from the US to Europe and ran from January to May 2025. The direction was only one-way because these flights could take place at night, which is when contrails have a clearer warming effect. During the day, contrails can have a cooling effect because they reflect sunlight into space.
The flight routes between two cities were randomly assigned to two groups. For the first group, air traffic dispatchers (调度员) had an option in their flight-planning software to pick an AI-optimized (优化的), low-contrail route, but for the second, no alternative was suggested. Actually, in the first group, only 112 out of 1232 flights took the alternative paths because of operational concerns, such as cost or safety. According to an AI analysis of satellite imagery of flight paths in the first group, there was a 62% lower amount of contrails for flights that took the contrail-optimized routes. When all flights in this group were included, the overall reduction in contrail formation was 11.6%, compared with the second group. The team estimated that the flights’ warming effect was reduced by 13.7% in the entire group given a suggested route and 69.3% in the flights that took the optimized routes.
“The 62% reduction is unlikely to have happened by chance,” says Edward Gryspeerdt at Imperial College London, “You can’t just scale this up to be a 60% reduction in contrails from every flight everywhere, but even a 10% reduction is still a non-negligible effect.”

Regular renting has become a modern ritual (习惯) for Lin Rong, a young professional in Shenzhen. Every couple of weeks, with a few taps on his smartphone, he has a DJI drone delivered to his door. The arrangement is made after a careful cost comparison between purchasing and renting the equipment. He has been burdened by a “permanent” commitment before: an action camera he once bought now sits at home, an expensive reminder of a hobby that lasted exactly two outings. Possession, he has concluded, is a burden.
Lin is not alone. In late January, newspaper China Youth Daily surveyed about 1,300 young people. More than three quarters said they now prefer flexibility over permanent ownership. Digital devices and outdoor gear (装备) were the most rented items, accounting for 42.5 percent and 38.9 percent of rentals respectively. Zhu Di, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, views this as a calculated departure from the traditional obsession with owning. “It is a more mature lifestyle,” said Zhu, “This generation is not just saving money; they are rewriting the rules of the marketplace to fit a life that refuses to be weighed down.”
This shift from owning to renting has been fueled by the rise of specialized online platforms and a nationwide credit system, which lowered the entry barrier for renters. Meanwhile, a growing number of businesses have shifted their focus from selling to renting, and the variety of rentable items is exploding. The impact was immediate. Suddenly, students could rent professional cameras for graduation photos, travelers could pick up outdoor gear without paying much deposits (押金), and tech enthusiasts could try out the latest digital devices at minimal risk.
The emergence of rental platforms is not without its anxieties: unclear rental agreements, unfair compensation conflicts and poor after-sales service. Despite these growing pains, the underlying shift feels permanent. Renting goes beyond merely saving money; it’s about living lighter — having the freedom to try new things without being tied down by possessions.
32. Why is an action camera mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To advocate Lin’s modern way of life.
B. To show Lin’s passion for photography.
C. To justify Lin’s choice of renting a drone.
D. To demonstrate Lin’s devotion to his hobby.
33. What can be inferred from Zhu Di’s remarks about the new generation?
A. They attach value to ownership. B. They reject expensive products.
C. They change the market for profit. D. They adopt a flexible life attitude.
34. Which factor contributes to a wider range of renters?
A. Lower prices of certain goods. B. Easier access to rentable items.
C. Higher requirements for renters. D. Bigger change in credit systems.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards renting?
A. Positive. B. Cautious. C. Objective. D. Disapproving.

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. Doreen looked out and saw her elderly neighbor Mr. Bower across the street sitting quietly in his garage. She had known him well for years, and everyone in the community loved this gentle old man. However, his garage had long been filled with piles of old furniture, discarded tools, worn-out boxes and various small items he could not bear to throw away. Little space was left for him to move around comfortably.
Doreen felt concerned for him. She knew Mr. Bower lived alone most of the time. He kept those old things not only out of habit but also because he cherished memories behind them. Yet the messy garage brought him inconvenience and even safety risks. This time, Doreen made up her mind to help him tidy up the garage in a gentle way.
She walked across the street and knocked softly on the garage door. “Good afternoon, Mr. Bower,” she greeted him with a warm smile. “There are so many items in your garage and most of them are no longer useful to you. Why not hold a yard sale? Many neighbors love practical second-hand goods.”
At first, the old man hesitated. He was deeply attached to his old things and worried that few people would come to buy them. But Doreen managed to persuade him and promised she would help sort items, make price tags, and post online ads. Finally, Mr. Bower nodded and agreed to hold a yard sale the next day.
Fifteen minutes later, Doreen hit the last few necessary keys on her keyboard with satisfaction. She created a detailed online ad for Mr. Bower’s yard sale at 9 a.m. the next day, introducing his old but well-preserved items. She also shared the news in the neighborhood group. Some neighbors showed great interest while others offered to lend a hand.
