Another is between the self-storage industry and local officials seeing the facilities as useless places. And those erupt within ourselves, over the cost of storing things that deep down we know we will never need. I know a lot about that kind of storage war. In the 1980s, I bought a house in Connecticut. Though finally I listed it for sale, I wasn’t ready to be rid of its contents, including furniture and artwork. Luckily a facility called A Storage Solution opened near my house. I rented the largest unit and had the entire contents of my house transported there. With my furniture, paintings and posters pressing against its metal walls, it looked like a mini version of the house. Over nearly 30 years, I had spent nearly $100,000 storing things worth less than a tenth that much. The bills kept coming. When I wrote about my storage experience on Facebook, divided comments poured in. It was then that I knew I was not alone. There was lots of well-meaning advice, yet it greatly underestimated my predicament. Still, I wasn’t prepared to throw away what I’d spent real money on. But picking out the things worth selling, finding buyers, and then shipping them presented challenges. Finally, my husband put his foot down. We made three trips to remove those things. While I was dealing with the boxes of personal papers, surprises came one after another. I found old event programs, my graduation speech and long-forgotten letters from loved ones. Now I am writing a book about these finds and the memories and emotions they evoked (唤起). If it becomes a bestseller, I am right to save those papers. If not, I am just like millions of Americans paying for storage they cannot explain. 24. Which type of “storage war” troubles the author most? A. Dealer-buyer battle. B. Official-industry tension. C. Games among storage businesses. D. Inner struggles over needless stuff. 25. What can we learn about the author’s storage unit? A. It covered limitless space in the open air. B. It kept part of her household possessions. C. Its layout fully copied the original house. D. Its rent cost much more than the contents. 26. What does the underlined word “predicament” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Expectation. B. Misfortune. C. Difficulty. D. Pleasure. 27. What might the author agree with? A. Time is money. B. Less is more. C. Better late than never. D. What’s done is done. C Plankton (浮游生物) buried in a small piece of rock may tell us more about the second-largest known mass extinction. It also shows how new modern techniques are unlocking parts of the fossil (化石) record that have previously gone ignored. Jonathan Aitchison at the University of Queensland, Australia, and his team extracted the piece from a rock collected in late 2018 from the Sichuan basin in China. The rock is 445 million years old, meaning it formed just before the Late Ordovician mass extinction. Inside, they found eight species of radiolarians (放射虫), including a new species that the researchers have named Haplotaeniatum wufengensis. They concluded the fossils were so well kept because both outside and inside structures were completely surrounded by bitumen, a dark thick oily material, leaving perfect impressions. “The high number and diversity of fossils show that ocean ecosystems, particularly microscopic plankton communities, were rich and active shortly before the extinction,” says Patrick Smith at the Geological Survey of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. “The Ordovician oceans are far richer biologically than previously recognized, especially at the microscopic level. These fossils reveal active communities of plankton at a time when Earth’s oceans were on the edge of major environmental change.” Traditionally, such tiny fossils are studied by melting the surrounding rocks with acid — a highly destructive method, says Aitchison. Instead, the researchers used a powerful X-ray machine — the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s Synchrotron, located in Melbourne — to scan the rock pellet and, within seconds, generate detailed 3D scans of the fossils it contained. “This is the biggest technological advance I’ve ever encountered during my whole career,” says Aitchison. Smith says one of the key messages from the work is that there is still a great deal of Earth’s fossils to explore — not because they are missing but because our traditional methods haven’t been able to detect or recover them. 28. What helps keep the radiolarian fossils in good condition? A. A new species. B. A special material. C. The outside marks. D. The extracted pieces. 29. What is the significance of the fossil discovery according to Patrick Smith? A. Awakening the once-quiet ocean ecosystems. B. Stressing the urgent need to protect the ocean. C. Offering the ways to avoid the mass extinction. D. Revealing the richer ancient ocean biodiversity. 30. Why is the new method better than the traditional one? A. It saves time and protects rocks. B. It creates real fossils more quickly. C. It melts surrounding rocks faster. D. It collects more rock pieces timely. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Hidden Rocks Expose Earth’s Origin B. Hidden Fossils Reveal Ocean Secrets C. The Worst Mass Extinction in History D. The Unknown Plankton Communities D The restaurant chain Dairy Queen, which first tested drive-through (免下车的) chatbots with technology company Presto last year, is now expanding the test to its 3,000 U.S. and Canadian drive-throughs. During the first test, Kevin Baartman, Dairy Queen’s executive vice president of information technology, said the bots improved customer-satisfaction scores by more than 10%. The chatbots always read back orders to customers, while employees sometimes skipped the step. The order-taking bots are accurate (准确无误的) about 90% of the time, Presto said. Humans’ accuracy rate is lower when factoring in guest greetings, promoting more purchases and entering the correct order. “One of the key things we looked at was its ability to process our menu,” Baartman said. “It’s done a good job with it.” Bringing chatbots to the drive-through has been an early step in restaurants to use artificial intelligence. Some customers have criticized the bots online, rating them as less friendly than actual humans. AI also struggled with complex requests with lots of special needs, with employees having to step in and help the bots with about 21% of orders. Drive-throughs are tough environments for chatbots, with background noise from other people, crying babies and music playing loudly from radios. Chatbots that don’t perform well can lead to lost sales and annoyed customers. Such AI tools are now widely adopted across the fast-food industry. The company Presto is also working with Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s on AI for their drive-throughs, while Wendy’s has teamed up with Google in using the technology. Taco Bell, Checkers and White Castle also are among the chains using AI in some drive-throughs. Recently, Dairy Queen gave the chatbots a big job: taking orders across one of the days when the chain ran a promotion for customers to get a free ice-cream cone. The bots responded to lines of cars and never got mad. Dairy Queen hopes the bots will help free up staff to review orders in kitchens before they are handed off. 32. What aspect of chatbots is presented as an advantage over humans? A. Efficiency. B. Stability. C. Accuracy. D. Flexibility. 33. What challenge do drive-through chatbots face? A. Dealing with noisy background. B. Talking with annoyed customers. C. Responding to public comments. D. Facing simple customer requests. 34. How does the author explain the popularity of restaurant AI technology? A. By listing examples. B. By analyzing causes. C. By presenting opinions. D. By making comparisons. 35. What is the author’s attitude towards drive-through chatbots? A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Objective. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Stop and smell a flower Whoever first came up with the saying “stop to smell the roses” spoke great wisdom. 36 Our sense of smell and emotional responses to it are totally personal. Even so, taking time to enjoy your favourite ones can effectively ease tension and lift mood. Below are simple ways to embrace the magic of pleasant smell in daily life. Enjoy the smell for at least 30 seconds. 37 If you want to truly unlock its hidden charm, spend at least 30 seconds calming down, breathing steadily, and wholeheartedly focusing on the smell. Simply stay present and enjoy the joyful moment. It’s not a long time, but few people spend that much time doing so. 38 Many people take “smell walks”, walking a short distance nearby in groups to notice different smells. You can also do this alone. Walk at a gentle pace and let natural smells come to you quietly. Take deep breaths when something draws your attention. Challenge yourself to get down close and connect with nature as animals do. Adjust smells according to your mood. Floral scents (花香) like lavender and rose help you relax and stay peaceful. 39 When you smell something strong, it will activate both your sense of smell and touch, leaving you feel refreshed. Choose your smell based on your inner mood and current state of mind. Bending down to smell flowers is a full experience. You can have feelings of your own and there is no better way to enjoy life. 40 A. Quiet the thoughts in your heart. B. Catch the smell in your neighborhood. C. Still, not all roses smell good to all people. D. We tend to ignore how much time we spend outside. E. There is a difference between a quick sniff and a mindful one. F. So next time you pass a flower, just stop and smell it with your heart. G. Sharp cool smells like pine and mint can cheer you up and improve your energy. 第三部分 语言运用(共三节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 When Dr. Larry Grogin was diagnosed (诊断) with Parkinson’s disease in 2019, he was preparing to cross the country running, but the plan quickly 41 . They lived in Greenfield Neighborhood, a quiet residential area lined with spacious yards. Every home featured a huge backyard table stretching nearly the length of the yard. The neighborhood kept a tradition of hosting a monthly themed party, with one family taking turns to host each time. It was their family’s turn to host the July party. While their parents busied themselves preparing party food, Jake and Lila volunteered to finalize the party theme. Dad sighed quietly, “No need to overthink. People just come for food and drinks, glued to their phones the whole evening — it’s just for show.” Mom nodded in agreement. “It’s nothing like our old days. Back then, without phones, neighbors truly bonded over small talks. Adults played card games, sharing life stories, while kids gathered to decorate cookies and do puzzles, laughing through simple fun.” “The May party hosted by the Carters drew hardly anyone. Most made up excuses to stay away, and those who came just sat silently looking down at their phones,” Dad added. “Last month’s party at the Davis’ was slightly better with more guests and plenty of barbecue and cakes,” Mom said as she fried potato chips. “Yet the atmosphere stayed dull (枯燥乏味的). Everyone sat around the long table as before, but they were scrolling on their phones. The warmth and connection were long gone.” At that moment, Jake suddenly turned to Lila, eyes sparkling. “I’ve got a perfect theme — Phone-free Backyard Party!” Lila agreed excitedly. The two cried out with joy, though their parents just glanced at them wordlessly and continued their work. Without hesitation, Jake and Lila got down to making a tall phone-storage stand with dozens of small cloth bags hanging on it using soft cloth, wooden sticks and old cardboard on which were written “Put down your phones. Talk to your neighbors.” 注意: 1.续写词数应为80个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 When the party day finally arrived, neighbors came one by one as the evening sun set. Text one on environmentalists invited me to a talk yesterday. I know a few bird watchers who enjoy watching butterflies at the same time, but I don't do that very often because there are only a few species in this town. My telescope gives good views of birds, but it's not always easy to identify all the birds I see. I have a field guide at home for reference. I start with the obvious features such as size and color, some more experience. Birdwatchers can recognize the songs and calls birds produce. I can gain lots of clues from observing their behaviors that often the deciding factor, birds can be found everywhere. If you want to see some really unusual birds visit the wetlands, then there are forests, though the birds tend to hide themselves in the trees. For me, I frequently walk along the beaches to see different species. Bird watching is always a chAllenge with no guarantees of what you may encounter. During the activity, professional teachers showed the students practical painting skills step by step patiently. Under their guidance, the students mastered basic techniques to draw flowers, plants and mountains with brushes and mixed colors. They shared innovative ideas and enjoyed peaceful artistic moments together. The activity was well received. Not only did it bring students joy, but it also helped them learn to find beauty and express feelings through painting. But following the twins’ gentle reminder, everyone slipped their phones into the cloth bags, putting them away for the evening. Adults sat around the long table, leaning in to talk with each other, laughing and trading stories. Meanwhile, kids sat with plates of cookies to decorate, tasting sweets happily. The whole yard was full of joy. Long after the party ended, people kept talking, unwilling to leave. “It is amazing!” Mom and Dad praised Jack and Lila for the brilliant idea. What delighted them most was that the long-gone warmth and connection returned. (101 words) 听力原文 (Text 1) W: An environmentalist invited me to a talk yesterday. M: What was it about? W: I’d assumed it would be about climate change, due to my work relating to the weather, but the speaker actually focused on water pollution. (Text 2) W: So, they want volunteers with good organizational and teamwork skills? M: Yeah. And I believe I’ll be a valuable volunteer for the team. I have relevant experience and I know how to lead a team. (Text 3) M: Emily, have you started preparing for our speech about future careers on Friday? W: Yeah, I’m thinking of focusing on how I can make a difference in my field. M: Sounds like a good plan. I might talk about the skills I want to develop. (Text 4) M: Wendy, I heard you’ve started a poetry club with a couple of classmates. W: Yeah. We all read the same poem, then meet up and talk about it. We take it in turns to decide what to read next. When it’s my turn, I look on the Internet before I make up my mind. (Text 5) W: Wow, everything looks delicious! But I’m trying to lose weight to look slimmer on camera. So I should skip the pizza and go for the chicken salad. M: Would you like to share a dessert with me? W: No thanks. I really need to cut back on sweets. (Text 6) M: Mary, I’m considering a trip to the Churchill War Rooms. Since you know there well, do you have any advice? W: I think you can begin your day with an early-morning tour, followed by an afternoon tea. And then you can go on to explore the Cabinet War Rooms and the Churchill Museum. Don’t forget to watch the Darkest Hour. It’s shown in the rooms where the film’s events took place. M: How long will it take to explore by myself? W: You may want to spend an hour and a half in the Cabinet War Rooms, where Winston Churchill directed the war effort. One hour is sufficient to visit the Churchill Museum. (Text 7) M: Anna, I heard you’re participating in our school’s science competition with an AI device. W: Oh yeah, William. M: So, what’s the name of your AI device? W: I’m calling it “AIDA”, which stands for “Artificial Intelligence for Dynamic Assistance”. M: That’s cool! What makes it different from others? W: It doesn’t just do what it’s told. It figures out what you need. It can also connect with other smart things at home, like lights and heaters, and make them work together. M: That’s clever! I hope you will win! (Text 8) M: May I see your ticket, please? W: Here you go. I’m really looking forward to this performance. Karl Teller is one of my favorite musicians, and I’m a longtime supporter of The Helpline Group. M: That’s great. This is the second fundraising event that we’ve held for the organization. OK, you’re in seat 122, which is in section D. Just head through the main entrance and a volunteer will help you. The show will start at half past seven. W: Thank you. Am I allowed to bring a drink into the music hall? M: Sure. But please note that photography is not permitted, and you should keep your cell phone on silent mode so as not to disturb others.
