Life is never perfect. However, beauty is always found in our life. Now, I’m honored to share my experiences with you.
Two years ago, I was a shy student who never spoke in class. Luckily, my English teacher always encouraged me and taught me how to get on with others. Gradually, I became outgoing. I made some friends and took part in many after-class activities. She even praised me in public for my progress. Now, I am living a happy life. I feel very lucky to have such a good teacher.
This experience tells me that the beauty of progress is not just about the grade, but about being seen and supported. It gives me the courage to keep moving forward..

Though sad, they were comforted by the ____29___ that Perry was in good care. The story also brought back the sweet ____30____ of Perry. Many even wanted to share their own Perry stories! In the late 19th century in Europe, many people had more money to spend than before. They had better education, so they could read about the world outside of their own countries. They mostly couldn’t afford to actually travel, but they could dream about travel.
Surely the fact that he wanted to travel and see the world is one of the reasons why French writer Jules Verne’s great science fiction Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) was such a success. He made travel seem so exciting. He made sure to fill his adventures with real and imagined wonders.
The story begins when a sea monster(怪物) that looks like a whale(鲸) attacks and sinks( 击沉) an American boat. The great powers meet in New York and decide to send a boat to deal with the monster. The crew(船员) will include Ned Land, a famous whale hunter, a sea biologist called Professor Aronnax and his assistant, Conseil.
After a terrible battle, the crew’s ship sinks, and Aronnax, Land and Conseil find themselves hanging on to the “monster”. Of course, it’s not an animal at all but a submarine(潜艇) called the Nautilus. Its pilot and builder is Captain Nemo, who saves but also kidnaps the men.
Nemo hates men. We don’t learn why, at least in this book. All we know is that he’s built the Nautilus so that he can be out of reach of the world’s governments. This is the reason he can’t let his new captives(俘虏) go. Once saved, they would lead them to the Nautilus and to Nemo. Much of the book is given over to the travels of the Nautilus. There are great stories of journeys to see fact, but also legend(传说).
In a big accident, Aronnax, Land and Conseil escape the Nautilus, but no one knows what became of it, nor of Nemo.

You may disagree with your friends or family members in some cases. While disagreements can be uncomfortable, there are some steps you can take to make conversations more polite and meaningful.
Listen to their side
Even if you don’t share someone’s point of view, you can still listen to what they want to say. Show that you’re paying attention by listening carefully without stopping them. Keep eye contact, nod and move your body towards the person you are listening to. Another way to show that you’re listening is by asking questions or repeating what they have said. You can start by saying, “OK. If I understand you, you are saying...”
Try respectful language
When someone has an opinion you don’t agree with, it can be easy to dismiss (摒弃) it. Some people refute (驳斥) others’ opinions by attacking or making fun of them. Here are some ways for you to express opinions with respect. Don’t use rude words like “stupid”. Stay calm and start with “I” instead of “You”. For example, you might say “I feel” or “I see this in another way”. Also make sure you will not use “We” language, even if you know others in your group agree with you.
▲
An opinion with feelings is weak. If you have a strong opinion, you can make a better case for it with facts. Facts are not based on personal feelings or guesses, they are true statements. Say what you would like to say in a calm voice and make sure your facts are from sources (来源) that can be trusted. If you are stopped, gently remind the person that you gave them a turn to speak and now you would like to speak. Then give the person a chance to reply.
Find common ground
You may find that you can’t change others’ minds, and they may not change yours. Still, look for points you agree on. You may also gain a better understanding of each other’s opinion. In the end, it’s worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships with others.
38.What does the writer mainly explain in Paragraph 2?
A.Why do you need to listen to others’ side? B.How can you show that you are listening?
C.What can you say to express your understanding? D.When do you ask questions or repeat others’ words?
39.What way does the writer use to express the ideas in Paragraph 3?
A.Showing sequence. B.Giving examples.
C.Presenting numbers. D.Describing cause and effect.
40.Which of the following is the most suitable for ▲ ?
A.Use facts instead B.Say in a calm voice
C.Share better feelings D.Give others a chance
41.Which sentence is TRUE according to the passage?
A.If you can’t change others’ minds, you can change yours.

C.To better understand others, looking for common views is necessary.
D.To have healthy communication, building strong relationships is important.

The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path (路径) to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometers long and 185 meters high—as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farmlands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (连通器系统) helps ships pass. Ships enter a lock (水闸), and gates close. Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam—it’s a symbol of China’s courage and creativity. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. Students learn about its scientific achievements and the spirit of teamwork behind it. The dam teaches us that with determination (决心), humans can overcome even the most difficult challenges of nature.
