Life skills for the future
Nowadays, some schools are teaching life skills as well as traditional subjects. This prepares students better for life in the real world.
Schools should first prepare students for adult life money managing skills. I take a closer look at my spending habits. I take notes of where each coin has gone every day. When I have money, I usually ask my mum to help me put some in the bank.
The cooking skill is important for our survival when we are living on our own. Everyday I prepare healthy meals for myself. It can save money by dining at home. I become more independent and confident in my ability to care for myself.
In fact, we already learn many life skills while doing traditional subjects. For example, we learn teamwork by doing group projects.
All in all , I believe all schools should teach some life skills.

Below is the information about tennis and badminton that Natalie found on a website.
In the USA, tennis is a very popular racket sport. What you need for tennis are a racket for each
player, a tennis ball and a tennis court. Tennis is played on a rectangle outdoor court.
However, it can also be played indoors to avoid the sunshine or the rain.
A tennis court is 78 feet long and 36 feet wide. There is a three-foot-tall net in the centre of the
court. A racket is about 27-28 inches long and over 300 grams.
Tennis serves (发球) are overhead and underhand. If you can’t do it well for the first, you will
have a second chance.
For people in the USA, badminton is a backyard (后院) activity more than a sport. The
things you need to play badminton are a racket for each player, a single shuttlecock (羽毛球), a net and
a badminton court. Just like tennis, it is also a racket sport on a rectangle court in an indoor gym. A
badminton court is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide. The net in a badminton court is about 5 feet tall. A
badminton racket is about 26-27 inches long and 90 grams.
Badminton serves are underhand and below the waist (手腕). And if you hit the ball outside of the
court or hit the net on the serve, you will lose the point.
31. What does the underlined word “racket” mean?
A. A loud noise that the players make. B. A tool that is used to hit the ball.
C. The way the sportsman hits the ball. D. A person who decides the winner of a game.
32. Which of the following shows a correct serve about badminton?
A. B. C. D.
33. What does the underlined sentence “For people in the USA, badminton is a backyard activity more
than a sport,” suggest?
A. Badminton is more popular than tennis in the USA.
B. Fewer people enjoy playing badminton in the USA.
C. American badminton players usually train in their backyards.
D. People can play badminton in different locations including backyards.

Whether you’re reviewing a book on a site or on your personal blog, you’ll want your review to
be informative and helpful for your audience. Read on for the following tips on how to write an
interesting book review.
A hook
A “hook” is a line that catches your audience’s attention and gets them interested so they’ll
continue reading your review.
Key book information
Share any general information about the book that is important for readers to know. The title and
author are an obvious choice. The year the book was published may be relevant if it came out over 10
years ago. Be sure to mention if the book is part of a series and whether it’s necessary to have read
九年级英语试卷 共8页 第3页
any other books before this book.
Basic plot summary
Share a high-level summary of the plot so your audience gets the main idea of what the story is
about. Best practice is to leave out the climax(高潮)or ending of the book and avoid giving away
spoilers(剧透)so you don’t make your audience lose interest in reading the story.
Your praise and critique
This section is the most important part of your review and should be the longest. Anyone can
summarize a plot, but what is your unique take on this book?
Simply saying a book was “good” or “bad”, or that you liked it or didn’t, isn’t helpful. Let your
audience know why you think it’s a great read, or why you found it disappointing. Sharing these
details will help your audience form their own opinion of whether they would enjoy reading the book.
Conclude the review by summarizing some of your thoughts on the book and suggestions about
what kind of readers will like the book the most. For instance: older or younger readers or people
who are fans of drama, mystery, or comedy.
Your rating
Most review sites provide a star rating system. Let your audience know your reasons for
choosing a particular rating.
34. What’s the purpose of writing a hook in a book review?
A. To advertise the book. B. To introduce the background.
C. To present the main characters. D. To attract readers to read the book.
35. What matters most in a book review?
A. Your special praises for the author. B. Your opinions on the book.
C. Basic plot summary. D. Key book information.
36. Which of the following should go in the empty box?
A. Your recommendation B. You reading experience
C. Main characters of the story D. Central message of the story
37. Which of the following is a useful critique?
A. I am going to give the book three out of five stars.
B. I don’t like the beginning and the ending of the book.
C. Both younger readers and adults will surely like the book.
D. The inspiring themes earn the book a place on the list of classic literature.

I’ve been to a few music festivals like Glastonbury, the UK’s biggest and most famous music
festival. But I’d never been to one in China.
At the end of August, I went to the Xiami Music and Arts Festival in Aranya, Qinhuangdao.
Although the main draw of the festival for me was Suede, a classic UK band, I still had a lot of fun
enjoying the festival’s other aspects.
Apart from the festival’s huge stages and screens, excellent sound systems and people dancing
and singing with their friends and family, there were other surprises too. I’ve never been to a festival
like this, which is located on a sandy beach! Watching live music by the ocean was incredibly
relaxing. Everyone had blow-up chairs you could buy and sit on comfortably to enjoy the music.
Some people even had couches! Often at music festivals, you’re left standing the whole time, but
九年级英语试卷 共8页 第4页
Aranya was a bit more peaceful. There were also more children and families in attendance (在场)
than I’ve seen at UK festivals, and this was great to see.
As the day went on, my expectation grew as I looked forward to seeing my familiar band, Suede,
who were the headliners (领衔人物). While Suede put on a good show, the most enjoyable surprise
came from my unexpected discovery of and subsequent (随后的) fondness for the Chinese band The
Life Journey. Unlike the seasoned Suede, these young performers were clearly in their prime. They
became famous after appearing on iQiyi’s The Big Band (《乐队的夏天》). Playing after the sun had
gone down with bright lights coming from the stage, The Life Journey really caught my imagination
with their variety of musical styles, beautiful vocals (歌唱) and positive lyrics and vibes (氛围). Even
with my limited Chinese, I was still able to happily sing along.
38. What can we know about the author?
A. He has been to the larges t music festival in Europe.
B. He went to Aranya to see his favorite Chinese band.
C. He went to a Chinese music festival for the first time.
D. He has never seen Suede in person before.
39. What did the author feel most surprised about the festival?
A. Its location. B. Its sound effects. C. Its performers. D. Its popularity .
40. How did the festival differ from those in the UK, according to the author?
A. Everyone had their own chair to sit on.
B. There were more families in the audience.
C. People felt more relaxed and comfortable.
D. It lasted longer with more bands performing.
41. Why did the author develop a liking for The Life Journey?
A. Their music was special and touching.
B. They interacted more with the audience.
C. He could understand their lyrics easily.
D. He was drawn by their performance.
D
Climate change has posed a great threat (威胁) to bird habitats. Take Poyang Lake in Jiangxi,
for example. An important habitat for the critically endangered Siberian crane (白鹤), Poyang Lake
has experienced abnormal fluctuations (涨落) in recent years.
“In some years the lake experiences floods, while in others it experiences droughts. Both of
these situations create food shortages in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a professor from the
National Bird Banding Center of China, told China Daily.
To solve such habitat problems, China has recently recognized 1,140 sites as important breeding
(繁殖), wintering grounds, and migratory (迁徙的) stops, with most of them located in wetlands.
Wetlands include coastal areas with a water depth of no more than 6 meters at low tide (潮
汐). Paddy fields (水稻田) and large areas of water used for aquaculture (水产养殖) and artificial
breeding are not included, noted the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. As the “kidneys
(肾脏) of Earth” and “species gene pools”, wetlands hold clean water, maintain biodiversity, help
contain floods, and prevent droughts.
To protect China’s wetlands, a law was also introduced in 2022 to restrict human activities at
important national wetlands and allow no harmful activities. These include overusing the land,
farming or harvesting too much, and pouring wastewater into the waters.
九年级英语试卷 共8页 第5页
Since these measures have gone into effect, more birds have been seen wintering in the nation’s
wetlands, including some new rare species. In February, the forestry bureau in Hunan province
reported 72 species of waterbirds that spent this past winter at Dongting Lake, a region that runs
across several counties and cities.
Mallards and Eurasian cranes are among the birds which stay at the lake. Black-faced spoonbills
(黑翅长脚鹬), a rare and endangered species, were also seen at Dongting Lake – they haven’t
appeared in the area for five years. The number of spoonbills has increased from 300 in the 1980s to
more than 5,000 presently, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, showing
a promising result.
42. Why does the author mention Poyang Lake?
A. To describe the living environment of endangered birds.
B. To express the beauty of abnormal fluctuations.
C. To show the threat of climate change to bird habitats.
D. To explain the importance of wetlands for bird habitats.
43.What do Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly talk about?
A. More birds are welcome in seen in the wetlands.
B. Laws are made to protect China’s wetlands.
C. There are serious food shortages in the cranes’ habitat.
D. Wetlands play an important role in solving habitat problems.
44. How have the measures made a difference to bird populations?
A. The number of rare bird species has increased.
B. The types of endangered bird species have decreased.
C. New bird migratory patterns have been discovered.
D. 72 rare species have been seen wintering at Dongting Lake.
45.What is the article mainly about?
A. Challenges faced by rare and endangered birds.
B. China’s protection of wetlands for bird habitats.
C. The success of a new law on bird protection.
D. The role of wetlands in fighting climate change.

There are many different types of landforms. Landforms are natural features on the planet’s
surface. You probably know about some of them already!
Deserts are one kind of landform that humans dislike. They are large areas of land that do not
receive a lot of rainfall. Each desert has one thing in common; it has less than 10 inches of rain per
year. They can be very hot during the day, and very cold at night. It is difficult for many plants and
animals to live in deserts.
Mountains are very tall landforms. They are larger than hills, usually more than 600 metres high.
20% of the Earth's surface is covered by mountains. They are made up of Earth and rock material.
Most mountains we know about rise high above the ground, but mountains also lie under the oceans.
Mountains are home to different types of plant, animals and even people. The higher the mountain
you go up, the colder the temperature becomes. The air at the top of a mountain is thin, so sunlight
gets through very easily. This means that even if it feels cold, you can get sunburnt quickly.
Valleys are the spaces between mountains. Some valleys are V-shaped, and some are U-shaped.
Many people live in valleys, because they have a comfortable temperature, are protected, and may
have rivers flowing through them. River valleys are attractive for humans as they provide good water
for drinking and agriculture. They also offer benefits such as fishing, rich soil, and easier
transportation.
Plains (平原) are large, flat areas of land. Since flat land is easy to build on, many cities are on
plains. Many plants can grow on plains, as well. Some plains are by oceans, and are called ocean
plains. Plains that are by rivers are called river plains, and are especially good for growing crops.
