The Biggest Stadiums in the World
People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 8A.D.,the Romans built
the Colosseum, which remains the world's best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design.
Rome's Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry
compared with the city's Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.
These days, safety regulations-not to mention the modern sports fan's desire for a good view and a
comfortable seat-tend to keep stadium capacities (slightly lower.Even soccer fans tend to have a seat
each;gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.
For the biggest stadiums in the world,we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks
them by their stated permanent capacity,as well as updated information from official stadium websites.
All these stadiums are still functional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.
Rungrado 1st of May Stadium,Pyongyang,D.P.R.Korea.Capacity:150,000.Opened:May 1,1989.

Our ship sailed on the sea into the Earth's night. Here, there was no visible light from the Sun or the Earth
Engines. But as we looked up,we children saw the starry sky for the first time in our lives. How breathtakingly
beautiful it was!
Ms Xing put an arm around us while pointing at the sky with her other hand."Look, children! That is
Proxima Centauri ()our new home!"With these words, tears ran slowly down her face. Before long,we
were all in tears-even the captain and crew.We all looked in the direction that Ms Xing was pointing. There was
only one point of light among the twinkling stars that shone constantly:Proxima Centauri-the only source of
hope and comfort for a hundred future generations."Whatever risks we might take,we will finally make it there!"
said the captain,in an assured voice.
On our way back from the sea,we saw the first sign that Earth had begun its joumney. In the night sky,a huge
comet had appeared. It was the Moon, abandoned by humankind.Lunar Engines had been installed to the Moon to
force it out of its orbit so that a disastrous crash could be avoided as the Earth sped up and moved away.As it
progressed, the gravitational tide of the Moon caused the ocean to swell, creating gigantic waves. We quickly got
off the ship to our destination in the Southern Hemisphere. The next few days were the countdown to our
departure.
Finally came the big day!As Earth Engines was set at a full power,we got immediately blinded by the bright
light from it.This acceleration created massive tsunamis hundreds of meters high that crashed onto the coasts of
every continent.Burning hot hurricanes roared through the boiling waves, screaming with wild fury and pulling up
almost every tree on Earth.
Our Earth, with its blue tail cutting through the darkness of space, had set out on its long journey, and with it
went all of humankind.

The ease of looking up facts on a phone anytime is a modern wonder, but are we becoming unwilling to think?
A new study indicates that the more we use the internet for information recall, the more we will do so in the future.
Psychologists described how they first asked people a set of difficult questions. One group was told to use a

丰城九中校本资料
search engine to answer them while the other group answered them from memory.Next, subjects were given easier
questions and offered the choice of searching online or not.It turned out that the ones who had previously used the
search engine were more likely to use it again-even if it was more inconvenient.
It would be unreasonable to draw the conclusion that, over time,no one will bother remembering anything at
all.But such a conclusion may still come as grist to the mill for those who have long been arguing that the internet
makes us stupid. The truth,of course, depends on what"stupid"means. If we all come to increase our"cognitive
(offloading"'onto the internet, that may simply promote a shift in the way we value mental abilities.Since
recall of facts is now so easy through the internet,we may just become less impressed by factual knowledge, and
more impressed by understanding and creativity.
It may help put things in perspective to recall that such argument was already conducted at the very birth of
Western culture. An ancient Egyptian inventor showed the Egyptian king his inventions and he was particularly
proud of writing:"This invention will make the Egyptians wiser."But the king thought the opposite.Writing,he
argued, wouldproduce forgetfulness in people's minds, because they won't practice their memory."
Writing itself is just as much an external technology as the internet is.Writing is also a tool of extended
cognition. The difference is that we have had thousands of years to get used to it.The truth about the question of
whether our reliance on modern electronic devices is better or worse for us is that it's simply too early to tell.
32.What did online searching cause in the new study?
A.Mental effort
B.Habitual dependence.
C.Poor memory
D.Information confusion.
33.What does the underlined phrase"grist to the mill"in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Effective support.
B.Real concern.
C.Clear doubt.
D.Mild opposition.
34.Why is the story of the Egyptian king mentioned?
A.To reveal effects of technology.
C.To compare different inventions.
B.To introduce the origin of writing
D.To show similar worries in history.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.How New Tools Change Our Brain
C.Cognitive Offloading:A New Option
B.Is the Internet Making Minds Lazy?
D.Internet or Memory:Which to Choose?

Plants don't hear sound like humans do,but they can feel vibrations()from sound and respond positively
to certain types of music, according to a study published in Nature. The sound vibrations from music copy natural
influences like wind or water.36 They have taller stems ()larger flowers, and healthier leaves.Singing
can also encourage healthy plants by adding CO2.
Chris Beardshaw,a gardening expert, conducted a greenhouse experiment comparing music types. He
discovered that classical music slightly improved growth, while the music of rock and roll singer Cliff Richard led
to plants dying. The loud, rhythmic energy of heavy metal proved most effective for flowering.37
Overall, findings seem to demonstrate that plants prefer more rhythmic types, especially classical and heavy
metal.According to the garden company Moana Nursery, classical music seems to work wonders to keep the pores
(fL)on the outer skin of plants open longer.38Heavy metal appears to stimulate even greater growth.
You can even find playlists on Spotify made just for your plants.

However, understanding plants'music taste can be tricky. It can depend on all sorts of variables like plant
type, music style, and environmental factors.39 The improvements in plant health observed during these
studies could also be caused by better plant care and attentive behavior from caretakers.
40 Play Mozart's light music as you tend to flowers,or put on Metallica's energetic beats while
planting vegetables. You might notice lusher(growth,or maybe no change at all.But either way,at the
very least, you'll have a great background music.
A.In this way, they can take in more air.
B.Plants may sense someone is watching them nearby.
C.It was revealed that plants exposed to music grow faster.
D.After all,unlike animals,plants'sense of hearing is weak.
E.Stricter controls are needed to link music and plant growth.
F.A link between energetic music and plant health is shown.
G.Whether plants like music or not, adding it to your gardening.

Sophia and her best friend,Melody, had been inseparable since middle school.Under the sheltering tree of
their friendship, they had shared countless laughs and whispered secrets, though they had different personalities:
Sophia preferred quiet reading while Melody loved exploring the new city paths on her old bicycle.Even the
strongest trees can be shaken by a sudden storm. One afternoon,a small misunderstanding gathered into a dark
cloud that threatened their precious bond.

丰城九中校本资料
It began with a crucial literature project that would significantly impact their final grade.Sophia, always the
planner, had spent the entire afternoon alone in the quiet classroom preparing their presentation. Her fingers
moved quickly and skillfully across the keyboard as she arranged slides(H)and typed notes. Each slide was
filled with strong arguments and well-chosen pictures that showed how hard she had worked. As evening
approached, she kept looking at the clock. Her worry grew with every minute.Melody was late again. The empty
chair beside her seemed to laugh at her, making her feel both lonely and angry at the same time.
When Melody finally rushed in,breathless and upset, her explanation came out as a confused mix of words.
"I'm so sorry, but my..."she began, only to be cut off by Sophia whose patience had run out."Something always
happens with you!Do you ever stop to consider how your actions affect others?
The sharp words flew out,and Melody's initially apologetic expression darkened instantly."And you always
have to control everything! It's so tiring trying to meet your perfect standards!"she shot back,he voice shaking
with strong emotion. The air in the room became thick and difficult to breathe, filled with their hurt feelings and
wounded pride. They picked up their books in angry silence, the half-finished project now representing the broken
foundation of their friendship.Walking home on different sides of the street, the setting sun created two separate
shadows stretching behind them.
