Located in Africa, the Sahara Desert spreads across 30 per cent of the continent. This vast desert, also known as “the great desert” in Arabic, is about 9 million square kilometers in size. It is also at least 4.6 million years old. This means that it is one of the oldest places in the world.
All deserts are dry, and the Sahara is both dry and hot. It is the largest hot desert in the world. We may think that all deserts are hot, but in fact some deserts are very cold! Many scientists believe that Antarctica, for example, is a type of cold desert. Most of the Sahara is rocky ground. But there are also places with grass, lakes, mountains, and even sand seas. A sand sea is just what it sounds like — it looks like a sea of sand! When the wind blows, the sand looks like waves.
Life in the Sahara is difficult. About two million people live in the Sahara. They usually move from place to place. There is water in a few parts of the Sahara, and some people live in these places all year round.
Not many animals can live in a place with such a dry and hot climate. They must adapt to survive. Camels, for example, go for a long time without drinking water. When they do find water, they can drink more than 100 litres of it in 13 minutes! Fennec foxes live in the desert too. They have large ears to help their bodies stay cool.
Today, the world’s largest hot desert is getting even bigger. It is now about 10 per cent larger than what it was about a century ago. But why is it growing? Some scientists believe that part of the reason is climate change. As temperatures rise, summers in Africa grow hotter and less rain falls. Water bodies get smaller and the ground gets drier and drier. If we do not take effective measures, the desert will keep growing!
31.What does the word “vast” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Very old. B.Very large. C.Very dry. D.Very hot.

A.All deserts in the world are dry and hot, just like the Sahara.
B.It is impossible for people to live in the Sahara Desert at all.
C.The expansion of the Sahara Desert is completely caused by human activities.
D.Some animals in the Sahara Desert have special features to deal with the hot weather.
35.Where is this passage most probably from?
A.travel guide B.picture book C.notice D.storybook

Imagine having a conversation with your friend, and you feel happy about it at the end of the conversation, but you are not quite sure why. Now imagine having the same conversation, but this time you feel excited because you know more about your friend. What’s the difference?
In the second situation, you know exactly how you feel, which helps you deal with it effectively (有效地). This way of understanding and naming emotions in different situations is called emotional granularity (情绪粒度).
Life is like a box of chocolates. ________ Understanding these emotions is important for a happy life. Those with high emotional granularity can name their emotions exactly. Instead of saying “I feel happy”, they would say, “I’m happy about the deep friendship and satisfied (满意的) with the moment with my friend. I will remember our friendship forever.”
People with higher emotional granularity have more developed brain structure in emotional-processing areas. These areas in the brain work well together. They help us notice our emotions, name them, and deal with them better. Developing the ability to name emotions very well can build an emotional immune system (免疫系统) against mood disorders (情感障碍).
The benefits of emotional granularity are far-reaching. It helps people manage their emotions better, and then improve relationships with family and friends. Actually, emotional granularity is not only gifted but can also be nurtured. To build emotional granularity, you can learn more emotional words, keep an emotional diary, try different emotional experiences, and often play emotional role-playing games.
All in all, in real conversations, emotional granularity helps people make better decisions in many social situations. It also makes us stronger and better at dealing with stress by noticing emotional problems early.
36.Why does the writer begin the text by comparing facts?
A.To teach us how to deal with emotions.
B.To encourage us to express our feelings.
C.To introduce the topic of emotional granularity.
D.To show the difference between feelings and expressions.
37.Which of the following can be put in the ________?
A.Every chocolate has a different cover. B.Every day in life is as heavy as before.
C.It always looks delicious but tastes terrible. D.It often presents us with different emotions.
38.How can you build an emotional immune system?
A.By eating healthy food. B.By learning more words.
C.By playing outdoor games. D.By practicing naming emotions exactly.
39.What does the underlined word “nurtured” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Developed. B.Described. C.Chosen. D.Checked.
40.What’s the purpose of this text?
