Anna poured coffee from the pot as the evening sunlight flickered (闪烁) on the prairie (草原). She hated cooking. What Anna loved best was riding. At twelve years old, she was an able cowhand—Papa just never gave her the chance to prove it.
But whenever she was sitting on her horse, Copper, pushing the cattle onward, Anna knew where she belonged.
After Anna washed the cups and unrolled her bed, she listened to the cowboys talk about the next day’s challenges.
“A storm’s coming,” said Luke, the head wrangler (牛仔). “The cattle will panic, and they’ll be skittish (易惊而难以驾驭的).”
Anna closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but couldn’t. “The men will need my help!” she thought. But when Papa slipped into his bedroll (睡袋), he whispered, “Anna, you stay in the camp tomorrow. It’ll be dangerous.”
“But I’m a good hand!”
Anna crossed her arms and stared at the sky.① The stars disappeared under a blanket of clouds. The wind whistled and bent the grass.⑩ Nervous, the cattle bawled (大叫) and stamped the ground.⑤
The camp slept—everyone but Anna. She got up, grabbed her hat, and tiptoed towards her horse.②“Copper!” she whispered. The horse nuzzled Anna.④ He seemed to sense her frustration. Anna rode slowly into the darkness.③ She wanted to be alone.
Why couldn’t Papa understand? Ever since her mother’s death, he’d tried to protect Anna from everything. And he made it clear that she came along as a cook—not a cowgirl. But Luke had shaped her into one of the best riders.
A loud crack of thunder shook Anna from her thoughts.⑦ Copper pranced (腾跳) nervously.⑥As lightning lit the landscape, Anna sensed the herd panic.
Then a more dazzling flash of lightning streaked across.⑧ From the direction of the herd came a sudden low rumbling (隆隆声).⑨
“Stampede (兽群的惊跑)!” Anna cried. “And it’s coming this way!” The sleeping men lay between Anna and the cattle stampede
She swung Copper around and raced back, yelling so loud that her chest hurt.
But in the camp, Papa looked at her severely, “I don’t know what you were doing there, but—”

Who
Anna, Papa, Luke
When
at night
Where
on the prairie
What
Para. 1 She swung Copper around and raced back, yelling so loud that her chest hurt.
Para. 2 But in the camp, Papa looked at her severely, “I don’t know what you were doing there, but—”
◆结尾+主题 尾句协同原文首段中的she was an able cowhand—Papa just never gave her the chance to prove it:父女相拥,Anna最终证实了自己是个能干的女牛仔。
Para. 2 ... pushing the cattle onward, Anna knew where she belonged.➝Anna
Para. 6 “But I’m a good hand!”
Para. 9 But Luke had shaped her into one of the best riders.
Para. 3 she listened to the cowboys talk about the next day’s challenges
Para. 5 you stay in the camp tomorrow

On a bitterly cold January morning, the temperatures had dropped dangerously below freezing point, and biting winds made conditions even worse. Overnight, a thick blanket of snow had quietly covered the town, streets were deserted, and a sharp silence hung in the air. People stayed indoors, enjoying hot drinks and keeping their fireplaces burning brightly, cautious of the bitter cold that threatened frostbite and hypothermia (失温).
The town was quiet as people remained indoors. However, Eleanor, an 83-year-old lady who lived alone, worried the birds would go hungry in this freezing weather. As she struggled through deep snow, her boots had suddenly slipped on hidden ice beneath, causing her to fall. Unable to rise with wet gloves and numb (麻木的) fingers, she had been stuck in the snow. Unfortunately, she could turn to nobody for help.
Originally, Eric Nelson had no intention of stepping outside that morning. He stood at his kitchen window, briefly observing the frozen landscape and rubbing (搓) his hands together to stay warm. However, as he thought about the possibility of frozen water pipes—an inconvenience that could make the already unbearable cold worse—he decided to step out quickly and inspect them.
As Eric opened his front door, an icy wind struck his face, nearly taking his breath away. To his surprise, he noticed his elderly neighbor Eleanor’s small dog, Maya, was already standing anxiously on his doorstep, shaking slightly but barking insistently. She moved her feet anxiously as her breath formed small white clouds in the cold air. Snow stuck to her fur, suggesting she had been outside for longer than was safe in such extreme temperatures.
Eric instantly sensed something was seriously wrong. Eleanor rarely went outside, especially in such extreme weather. Feeling increasingly uneasy, he quickly followed the anxious dog as she dashed urgently toward Eleanor’s backyard. When he arrived, his heart sank. Eleanor lay helplessly on the snow-covered ground near a bird feeder, pale-faced and shaking uncontrollably.

Last summer, a group of friends who loved adventures—brave Jack, nature-loving Lily, and energetic Tom—made a brave decision to go on a mountain-hiking trip. They were really excited. They couldn’t wait to see the beautiful views on the mountain and test how far they could go in body and mind.
When they started climbing, the sun was shining brightly. The path looked easy, but it was not as simple as it seemed. They talked and laughed happily. Their laughter spread through the valleys. They really enjoyed the fresh air and the wonderful natural beauty around them. The birds were singing, and the leaves were moving gently in the wind. It was like a beautiful picture.
But as they climbed higher, the weather changed suddenly. Dark clouds came quickly and covered the sky. A strong wind started to blow hard. Then it rained heavily, and the path became very slippery. Lily, who was walking at the back, lost her balance and slipped. She twisted her ankle and cried out in pain. As soon as Jack and Tom heard her, they ran back to help. But they found themselves in a difficult situation. It was too dangerous to keep climbing because of the rain, and going down the steep (陡峭的) and slippery path was also very hard.
Finally, they found a small and wet cave to stay in. The wind outside was blowing loudly like a wild animal. The rain just kept falling. Jack and Tom tried to make Lily feel better, but they were also worried. They didn’t have much food, and it was getting colder. They knew they had to find a way out quickly. Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. This unexpected appearance frightened my horse, and it started to run like crazy. I was seized by fear. “Don’t let go of the rope! Keep calm!” yelled Dad. I did so and tried to keep my balance to prevent myself from falling off. Fortunately, it stopped slowly. At that moment, Dad came up. Seeing I was OK, he was relieved. But we soon found we had been off the beaten track and got lost.
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. I was very frightened, but Dad wasn’t. He kept silent and listened very carefully. We were wandering around when suddenly he heard the sound of the running water. Then we went off in the direction and soon a river came into sight. Dad said, “We can find our way back to the farmhouse if we follow the river.” Finally, we arrived at Uncle Paul’s home safely, although it was a little late for supper.

过渡句:(协同原文中的迷路、母亲带的小说)旅途继续(迷路/阅读/仙人掌同行)→(协同原文Loving, sweet, and endlessly entertaining、 a 10-day journey from Chicago to California via Route 66和mismatched socks)抵达加州时,车里堆满不成对的袜子和糖纸——但我们无可救药地快乐着。

Suddenly, I found the cactus looked familiar. It was the exact one from Mom’s postcard—the spiky cactus against the desert sky. I burst out laughing, pointing at the “Best Cactus, Best Memories” sign. Dad squinted at (眯着眼睛看) the postcard, then at the farm, and groaned (哀嚎道), “We’ve been circling this place for hours!” Mom clapped. “It’s fate! Let’s take a family photo!” And so, there we were, grinning (咧着嘴笑) like fools in front of the cactus farm. The absurdity—the wrong turns, the flaming hat, the leaky tent—felt like magic. This wasn’t just a road trip; it was our messy glory—with Mom already eyeing a small cactus to take home.
We set off again, with a cactus in the trunk. Mom had bought a tiny potted one from the farm, insisting it was a “souvenir of resilience”. Dad muttered about trunk space but gave in when she named it “Spike”. The rest of the trip unfolded in classic family fashion. Dad took three more wrong turns, Mom read her novels aloud (ignoring Dad’s protests); and Spike the cactus became our silent, prickly co-pilot By the time we reached California, the car had been a disaster zone of mismatched socks and candy wrappers—but we were hopelessly, joyfully united. And as Mom would say, that was the best destination of all.

The girls dragged their feet upstairs. They reluctantly complied with (服从,遵循) their father’s instructions. Gina opened her laptop and began searching for information on mountain gorillas, while Rose found the book and started flipping through (浏览;翻看) the pages, hoping to find something that would spark her interest. As she flipped through the pages, she saw pictures of the gorillas and read about their habitats and behaviors. Meanwhile, Gina was discovering fascinating facts and watching videos of the gentle giants in their natural environment.
The next Monday came and the family set out excitedly. As the plane took off, Rose tried to put aside her initial reluctance (抛开她最初的不情愿)and immerse herself in the adventure. The journey was filled with new sights and sounds, and Rose gradually found herself fascinated by the unique ecosystem of the Virunga Mountains. She observed the gorillas from a safe distance, marveled at their strength and agility, and was humbled (感到谦卑)by their place in the natural world. By the end of the trip, Rose had a newfound respect for nature and its creatures, and was grateful for the opportunity to experience such an educational and eye-opening journey.
