Dear Jim,
Thank you for inviting me to share my thoughts on reading in the information age.
The digital age changes reading habits profoundly. While e-books and online articles offer instant access to global knowledge, digital distractions might make deep reading challenging.
To adapt, I combine digital and traditional methods. (总说自己的阅读方式) For quick updates, I read e-books on my phone for convenience. (方式1+理由) However, for serious learning, I choose paper books—they boost focus and memory without screen interruptions. Besides, I also set aside (留出) daily screen-free reading time to avoid distractions.

Without hesitation, Eric rushed to Eleanor. His heart pounding wildly (他心跳如雷), he gently rolled her over (翻转), only to find her lips blue and her body shaking violently. Carefully scooping her up [(敏捷地)抱起,拿起,捡起], he carried her back home, laid her on the couch, and piled blankets over her. He immediately called 911, describing her condition clearly. While waiting, he warmed water bottles and placed them around her to warm her up. Soon, the ambulance arrived and rushed her to the hospital.
Two days later, Eleanor knocked on Eric’s door after being released from the hospital. Her eyes glistening with tears (她眼含泪光), she handed him a hand-knitted scarf. “Thank you for saving my life,” she whispered. Eric initially refused the gift but softened (态度缓和) at her insistence. “I’m just glad you’re safe,” he said with a smile, wrapping the scarf around his neck. From that day on, their bond grew stronger, and Eric often joined her to refill the bird feeder, their laughter echoing through the winter air. (结尾也可为: Touched by her gesture, Eric began checking on Eleanor daily. To his surprise, he discovered her rich knowledge of birds, and soon a bird feeder hung outside his window too. Their friendship, born from an emergency, became a warm tale of mutual care in the neighborhood.)

With one great leap, Harry managed to grab the key, slam the door, and lock it.2. 如“A pale young man made his way forward, very nervously.” 如“He hurried out from behind the bar, rushed toward Harry and seized his hand, tears in his eyes.” 可套用公式sb. did A, did B and did C或sb. did A and did B, doing C。4.描写人物肢体动作并具体描写跑、走、笑、哭、看等动作,如用pace, stagger, limp, throw a hateful look at, keep one’s eyes on, lift one’s eyes, give sb. a wink等生动具体的词汇代替walk, see, watch, look at, notice等表“走”或“看”的笼统的词汇。

I needed to do something in my community in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner.① We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering.② It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared.④ I’d come face to face with the homeless: How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous.⑤ I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.⑥
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had totally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking.③ Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.⑦ →所见(源源不断的流浪者排着队等着食物。

Sylvia Murray, a retired nurse, lived for twenty-two years in a small, well-kept house that was the pride of the neighborhood. Her Saturdays followed a cherished routine: she would edge the lawn with precision, nurture her bright rose bushes, and ensure every window box overflowed with colorful blooms. Neighbors often paused on their walks to compliment the tidy garden, and Sylvia beamed with a quiet, profound pride, for this small plot of land was her masterpiece, proof of her care and dedication.
Then, illness and disability gradually stole the strength required to bend, lift, and mow. The unstoppable march of nature took over: grass crept over the sidewalk, wild shrubs (灌木) pressed against the front windows, and a thick blanket of leaves gathered in corners she could no longer reach. Each messy day deepened Sylvia’s shame, as the garden that once symbolized her independence now stood as a very public reminder of her decline.
Seeing Sylvia’s struggle with both pride and loneliness, Jenny, a close companion of her, decided to act. She wrote a short, honest post on a local community page. It explained Sylvia’s situation, her embarrassment, and included photos of the overgrown yard. The post was a gentle request, asking if anyone could spare an hour, tools, or hands to help. The message was quickly understood by many, its honesty moving dozens of neighbors, and comments of support began to multiply.
Among the replies was a response from the Riverside Youth Volunteers, a local teen service group. Their leader, Johnny, immediately forwarded the post to the team’s chat. Despite the fact that Sylvia’s street was a 15~20-minute drive for most of them, everyone agreed without hesitation. They quickly held a planning meeting, borrowed extra power tools from the community center, and arranged carpools (拼车) for the upcoming weekend, determined to restore the dignity the post so clearly described. With everything ready, they set out for Sylvia’s house the next Sunday.

My friend Jane, a cheerful, humorous and outgoing person, worked for a charity. One day in early December, she called, saying she was putting together some people to sing inspiring holiday songs to some unfortunate families and chat with them on New Year’s Day to cheer them up. Jane invited my husband and me to join them.
Although I hadn’t sung in any choir (合唱团) for years, I always enjoyed singing. I was confident with proper songbooks, much rehearsal (排练) time, a good director, and a guitar, we would be great. I told Jane we’d be happy to join her choir. But as she described her plan, my enthusiasm reduced. Jane felt one rehearsal would be enough, and since nobody in the group played the guitar, our voices would be enough. She didn’t know what we’d be singing, but she’d come up with something. I had always admired her free spirit, but I doubted her plan, already regretting my quick decision and worrying.
Then, what was worse, Jane called one afternoon, saying our rehearsal would have to be canceled because two members got sick, and provided a list of simple songs for us to practice singing at home. Noticing my concern, she told me what mattered was that we were there and that everything would be fine.
At home, my husband and I busily decorated our house for our holiday and sometimes set aside some time for our song practice.
Before long, the choir’s singing date arrived. That day, Jane, together with five of us, drove toward our first destination. We would be visiting an old couple who lived alone. The wife had been receiving cancer treatments. I had no idea whether our performance would help make their day.
Soon, we walked through the snow and reached a small, simple house.
