This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.④
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money⑤.

Suddenly, Sona started to bark. Mohan looked up to see his father’s sheep rushing down. Something was wrong. He waited for the sheep to reach him. Then he turned to Sona and said, “Stay and guard the sheep. I must look for Father.”
Mohan picked up a lantern and his shepherd’s staff (牧羊人手杖) and hurried in the direction from which the sheep had come. The tall rocks threw dark shadows. “Father, where are you?” he called out.
Mohan stopped and listened. The frightened bleating (咩咩叫) of a lamb cut through the silence of the evening. Then came a low, deep growl. Mohan shouted, “Father!”
A voice answered, “I’m here.”
Mohan rushed up a slope and almost fell into a ditch. Mohan spotted his father lying in the ditch, holding a lamb. He looked up and found himself looking straight into the eyes of a leopard. Mohan froze with terror.
“Use your lantern.” His father’s voice shook Mohan’s fear out of him.

“Come on,” I said.“Let’s go to the kitchen and figure out a way to get out of here.” In the cupboard we found Mother’s plates. We put a teaspoon of marmalade into each one. We set one on the porch, one just inside the back door, and one every few feet all the way up to the attic. Then, very carefully, I set the last small plate of marmalade in front of the hungry skunk. I backed away and both of our eyes were fixed on (盯着) the skunk. The skunk sniffed, inched forward and licked the plate.
The skunk ate the marmalade on the plate. Rob and I followed as Marmalade ate his way down two flights of stairs, through the kitchen, and out to the garden door. When he was through wolfing (狼吞虎咽) his last bit of marmalade, he turned and looked at us. He stared at us for a long time but didn’t spray or bite us. And then, finally, he gave us a big toothy grin (朝我们露齿一笑) before skipping away into the rain. I then learned that he definitely remembered my mother’s kindness.

The mother elephant took a step forward, her eyes never leaving me. I stood still, my heart pounding wildly (我的心怦怦跳). She approached cautiously and gently nudged (轻推) the calf with her trunk. The trapped leg was now even more tightly caught in the wires. I knew I had to act quickly.
