A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. The furry creature launched an attack on the fence instantly leaving a narrow opening on it. Obviously, the pepper spray only made him even more furious. I feared the giant would tear down the fence at any minute. Much as I wanted to photograph the approaching bear with my camera, I, without hesitation, grabbed the bread and threw it far away. However, in not even a minute did the hungry animal finish the bread and come back again, making Elli scream and shake all the time.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. It hovered over the camp, making a deafening noise all around us. As we were lifted into the air we saw the stubborn bear already heading back to our camp. When Elli and I, safe and sound, got home and developed our pictures, we noticed the bear had a broken tooth. Like humans, polar bears feel pain, have emotions, and can be afraid. Elli and I learned our lesson: Beware of a bear with a toothache.

But then he noticed Sid, strangely still in the river. His face had gone white. His mouth was open, as if to scream. Chet’s insides turned to jelly (发颤;发抖) when he saw the shining fin moving slowly through the water. “Hurry!” Chet cried. “Get out!” Monty and Dewey flew out of the water. But Sid seemed stuck. The shark was closer to the surface now, its black eyes almost glowing. They all screamed at Sid, but Sid still didn’t move. The shark was getting closer.
Before he had a chance to think, Chet was in the water, leaving Monty and Dewey on the dock. He swam as fast as he could toward Sid, grabbed hold of (抓住) Sid’s arm and pulled him. “I have an idea to stay warm!” Tom shouted excitedly. Spreading his arms, he suggested joining the penguin huddles. Worried that the penguins wouldn’t let them, Mary hesitated but was soon persuaded by Tom’s assuring grin (令人放心的笑容). He slowly approached the crowded penguins, crouching down (蹲下). Gently stroking them with care, he whispered softly. Though alarmed at first, the penguins recognized Tom and let him into their group. Mary quickly followed. The children squeezed into (挤入) the huddle’s edge with the penguins. Just as the birds did, they moved toward the middle and back out as the group shifted.
Two and a half hours later, the parents returned with help. Rushing in screaming out the kids’ names, they were surprised. The children were surrounded by penguins in a large huddle, safe and sound. When asked how they managed to brave this terrible cold (对抗严寒), the two kids exchanged a proud glance (交换了一个骄傲的眼神). “We copied what the emperor penguins do,” they told their parents.
