I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Growing more panicked, I began to cry. Fortunately, hearing me crying, Dad came and helped me lay my head on the table, so my neck could rest for a while. Then he said to me, “Listen, honey. I have to cut this pumpkin in half.” I had no choice but to keep still with my eyes tightly closed and listen to the knife moving on the pumpkin. Moments later, my head was finally released from this horrible pumpkin cage. Then Mom told me she had just filmed me managing to pull my head out of the pumpkin.
That video was posted the day before Halloween. Surprisingly, it became a hit that the video started racking up (累计) hundreds of thousands of views. At the very beginning, hardly could I contain my embarrassment when I was recognized as the one in the video. However, with time going by, my life was back on track. Whenever I thought about the day on which I got my head stuck in a pumpkin, I couldn’t help but laugh out loudly. I would say I learned my lesson—look before you leap (三思而后行)!

“This is Maya’s secret,” Hilda said with a big smile. In her hand, she displayed the items she had found behind the filter box. “She’s been keeping these from the tank, not me.” Katherine’s eyes widened (眼睛睁大) as she examined the small pile of objects that Maya had collected. Hilda explained how she had watched Maya cleverly hide the items away, turning the tank into her own little collection spot. Her voice was soft, filled with a mix of surprise and relief (既吃惊又欣慰). No wonder Maya would always swim back and forth in the tank when other dolphins were training.
Now Katherine realized what had been going on. She had been secretly collecting and hiding any stuff she found in the tank for a long time!
Now Katherine realized what had been going on. She looked at Maya, then at Hilda, and her stern expression softened into a smile. “I owe you an apology, Hilda. Together, they watched Maya perform her tricks, understanding now that the dolphin’s behavior was not a training issue but a sign of her intelligence and curiosity. During the tank sweeps, Maya had been swimming playfully, but now the dolphin stopped suddenly and swam to the back part of the tank where the filter (过滤) box was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and then swam away. What was Maya doing back there? Hilda wondered. She jumped back into the water and swam over to take a look behind the box, and her question was answered. Hilda then swam across the tank following Maya’s path and emerged from the water to find Katherine removing her scuba gear. As Katherine turned around, her mouth dropped open. There was Maya at the edge of the tank with a comb (梳子) in her mouth waiting for her treat.
“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Katherine, taking the comb and throwing her a fish. “I know where she got it,” declared Hilda climbing out of the tank with a handful of items still wet from their watery, resting place. “What’s all this?” Katherine asked, obviously confused.

I could smell garlic and other Italian spices before I opened the front door. Mom was cooking because Uncle Vince was coming for dinner. As the only non-Italian in the family, she wanted to make a good impression on Uncle Vince, who was a very traditional Italian.
Mom opened the fridge, where lay two bags of food, one for meatballs and the other for cake balls. She hurriedly took out the bag of “meatballs” which she had cooked and frozen before. However, she didn’t realize that she had made a mistake, but later it became a surprise.
Mom carefully put the meatballs into the boiling pot of sauce and tried to make them expand, just like my Italian grandma used to do. The salad was ready, covered with a wet towel to keep it fresh. The table was set; the garlic bread was waiting to be put into the oven; the water for the spaghetti was almost boiling.
Uncle Vince arrived in time for dinner. We greeted each other just like Italians usually do. Then, he and Dad sat in the living room, chatting casually while Mom and I served the food. “Come on in, guys. Food is almost ready,” Mom said, with a confident smile on her face.
I passed Uncle Vince the bowl full of spaghetti, and then Dad handed him the plate of “meatballs” that had been heated in the sauce. When Uncle Vince saw the size of the “meatballs”, his eyes widened, and he couldn’t help licking (舔) his lips. He helped himself to three “meatballs” while Mom held her breath. Then he picked up one of the “meatballs” with his fork and took a big bite. He stopped for a moment and said, “The taste and spices of this ‘meatball’ are quite interesting. It is different but really good.” Mom finally relaxed. In fact, the “meatballs” were so good that after eating three, Uncle Vince had two more. Mom felt very happy, and the atmosphere of the family dinner was so harmonious.
