The girls laughed wildly, sprawling out in the shade to catch their breath.
“I’m hungry,” Sista said.
“Yeah,” Rafi agreed. “I could really go for a jobo.”
“I know where there’s a great jobo tree,” Sista said. “It belongs to that lady who lives in the little house by the hill. I heard she’s stern, but she gives fruit in return for an errand (差使).”

“Jobos are my favorite,” Rafi said, licking her lips. “I love their sweet-and-sour taste.”
“Let’s go,” Sista said. They crossed a stream. Finally, upon a hilltop, they saw a jobo tree laden with bright yellow fruit.
A small farmhouse stood at the bottom of the hill. Rafi’s heart pounded as Sista knocked on the door. An elderly woman answered.
“Yes?” the lady asked, squinting at the girls.
“We heard ...” said Sista, her voice shaky, “you give jobos in payment for an errand.”

The lady raised one eyebrow. “Ah, yes. Payment. Nothing is free, eh?”
The lady led the girls into the kitchen. The lady grabbed two baskets, one large and one small, and pushed them into the girls’ hands. “Fill these with jobos.”
The girls raced to the tree, climbed the branches, and picked the ripest jobos. After filling the baskets, they returned. The lady filled a bag with rice, and dried beans, then she handed it to Sista.“Take this bag and the large basket of jobos to the Gomez family. Do you know them?”

The girls nodded. “Good. And ask them for the payment,” the lady added.
As the girls walked away, Sista wrestled with the sack. “This is so heavy.” “This basket is heavy, too,” Rafi complained.
The girls reached the Gomez’s home sweating and panting. Mrs. Gomez answered the door with three kids. The girls held up the food. “This is from the lady with the jobo tree,” said Sista.
Mrs. Gomez smiled. “Thank you,” she cried. “My husband is still sick in bed. Times are hard.”

On the papers were colorful drawings from the children! The girls looked at each other and broke out in smiles (绽开笑容). After the lady finished, she joined Rafi and Sista again. “And here’s your payment,” she said, handing the small basket of jobos to the girls. They could even hear the smile in her voice (听出她声音里的笑意). “Thank you,” they grinned and waved goodbye to her. As they walked home, they enjoyed their treat.
