Monday
“Listen to that.”said Matt one night.
Scott listened. Through the open door came a low, anxious whine (哀鸣), like a sobbing under the breath. Then came a long sniff, as White Fang looked at his master, checking he was still there.①
“I think that dog’s on to you,”said Matt.
Scott looked at his friend sadly.“I can’t stay any longer. I’ve got a new job in California. How could I look after a wolf-dog there?”he said.“He would hate living in a city, anyway.”
He knew a dog like him needed the wide open spaces of the frozen North. Five or six times he changed his mind. But in the end he decided firmly against taking him.
Then came the day when through the cabin door White Fang saw his master packing his bags.② This was just like last time! He knew his master was going away and leaving him behind!
The next day, White Fang’s fears grew and grew. He wouldn’t leave his master’s side for a second, and when Scott went inside, he stood outside by the door, watching his every move.③ Then Scott took his two large bags out of the cabin, followed by a tin box. Now the terrible thing was happening.
White Fang watched as two men arrived. They took the bags away down the hill towards the steamship port.
Scott called White Fang.“Poor fellow,”said Scott, gently rubbing White Fang’s ears④.“I’m leaving, old boy, where you can’t follow. Now give me one of your growls, the last. A goodbye growl!”
But White Fang wouldn’t growl. He gave his master a wistful (留恋的), searching look and buried his head out of sight, between his master’s arm and body.⑤

Ben wondered where the gun shot had come from. He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun.
My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.②
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire.⑨ Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.③
My plan was working out just fine.① Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room.⑤ Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually:“Not a chance.”Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice.⑦ Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.⑧
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first.⑥ However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.④
I realized it was me who was at fault.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door.

I realized it was me who was at fault. What if I had allowed my
brother to bring Toby inside during the gathering? What if I had been more understanding? Then my brother wouldn't have left with Toby in anger. Over two months had passed with no word from him. Noticing the worry on my face, my wife urged, “You need to make this right.
Why not visit him now with those biscuits I just baked?” Her words touched me, and I swallowed my pride. Half hopeful and half nervous,I picked up the biscuits and headed to his house.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother's
door. He opened it, and I read “Not a chance” in his first glance.
“Can we talk? ” I asked gently. Toby bounded forward, tail wagging, his front paws resting on my shoulders. I bent down, stroked his head, and took out a biscuit. Toby gently took it in his mouth. My brother's face softened and he motioned me inside. I apologized for my behavior at the gathering, admitting I could have handled that better. A faint smile crossed his lips as he took the biscuit box. As we sat chatting, Toby lay at our feet. It felt good to reconnect.

“You should get a dog,” my therapist (治疗专家) said. A dog? I couldn’t even look after myself. I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a canine (犬科的) friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a solution to the fact that I couldn’t leave the house without bursting into tears.
Adopting an animal was far from easy. When I found Simba, his adoption profile made him out as the perfect puppy. I filled out the paperwork and had a few weeks to prepare for his arrival.
When he came home, it became increasingly obvious that Simba didn’t understand “no”, “stop it” or “don’t do that”. He was the worst-behaved dog I’d ever seen. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice.
At home, I found him sitting on my bed comfortably. Jumping from the sofa to the tea table was his favorite game every day. He fought tooth and nail to get a bite of my meals and ate anything that fell on the floor. What was worse, dog waste and urine were seen everywhere, which annoyed me most. But his curiosity and vigor really impressed me. Training him to behave well kept me busier than I’d ever expected.
I decided to start taking him for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Simba. Simba showed me what bravery looked like. He didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation. He simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park, he would run toward it. He always leapt forward and explored the unknown by sniffing here and there unless I called him. He loved adventure. I found myself mirroring his behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

One day, I visited my friend Marge to help with her spring household cleanup. A black-and-white cat met me at the door and he attempted to slip out. Marge quickly scooped him up (一把抱起). “Meow! Meow! Meow!” the cat’s cry filled the air. “This is Mr. Naughty. I’m watching him for Susan, my neighbour.” Marge then put him on the floor and gave him a pat. He curled himself into a furry little ball. We spent the afternoon sorting items for donation. When we finished, a towering pile of boxes lined the hallway.
Mr. Naughty strolled (溜达) over. I lifted the fluffy sweetheart. His fur glistened under the sunlight and his green eyes sparkled with curiosity. He rubbed his face against my cheek.
“When’s Susan picking him up?”
“This afternoon, as soon as her plane arrives. I’ll be glad when he’s back home, he is safe and sound with his mama,” Marge said.
I laughed and set Susan’s pet on the hardwood floor. “Stop worrying. What could happen? Come on, I’ll help load these boxes in your car before I go.”
We lifted three boxes each. Piled up past eye level, they swayed (摇摆) in our shaking arms as we attempted to squeeze through the front door. Suddenly, I felt something furry brush my ankle and saw him slide past with elegance. I watched in horror as he paced down the front stairs.
“No!” a scream burst from Marge’s lips as the cat leaped towards the fence and entered the bushes (灌木丛). “He’s not allowed outside! He’ll run away!” Marge cried. She dropped the boxes. “What will Susan do when she learns I lost her baby?”
“Calm down. I’ll get him.” I dumped my boxes and hurried down the steps to the far side of the fence.

Ten minutes later, Simba and I were walking in the nearby park. It had already been bathed in the rising sun Enjoying the fresh air and birds singing, I felt refreshed and so did Simba. He led me into a dancing group and then began to run about loosely, sometimes playing with a dog, sometimes coming back to my side. It was amazing that I gradually shook my body to the cheerful melody. On our way home, a pet owner stopped to share experience of keeping pets. Unconsciously, morning walks became a routine.
As time went by, I found myself totally changed. Inspired by the bravery of Simba, I could leave my house without tears. Every time I felt down or defeated, my puppy would keep me company quietly and I would pour out all my inner thoughts (倾吐所有内心的想法) to him. Whenever I got home, he greeted me by licking my hands and jumping up and down. Everything seemed to take a turn for the better (变好). Not until then did I truly understand my therapist’s advice. Thanks to Simba, my friend and instructor, it was he that restored my life.

But he was nowhere in sight. Marge hurried to the bushes, calling out the cat’s name. Meanwhile, I searched the yard and combed the other possible hiding spots, like under the porch and behind the shed, but he was nowhere to be found. As time ticked by (时间过去/流逝), there was still no sign of Mr. Naughty. Our worry and anxiety started to mount, and we decided to expand the search range (扩大搜索范围) to the nearby surroundings, but still no luck. Finally, we dragged our tired bodies back to the yard with heavy hearts.
Suddenly a faint sound reached our ears from the water pipe on the house wall. It must be Mr. Naughty! Marge and I exchanged glances and dashed towards the sound. We crouched down (蹲下), peeped into the pipe and spotted Mr. Naughty nestling inside, his green eyes shining in the darkness. Frustration seized us as our attempts to coax him out proved fruitless. Then, Marge had a sudden inspiration of using his favorite toy to lure him out (引诱…… It took some time, but eventually, Mr. Naughty emerged from the pipe. Relief washed over us, and we were overjoyed to see him safe and unharmed. Marge and I never told Susan about Mr. Naughty’s great escape. And, as far as we know, neither did Mr. Naughty.
Frustration seized us as our attempts to coax him out proved fruitless.
