Version 2
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Then we realized that the spray had only angered him even more, for he seemed much fiercer this time and violently pushed the fence like mad. My heart raced wildly, not knowing what to do. At this critical moment, Elli grabbed several pieces of garlic bread and threw them over the fence. It worked! The bear stopped the attack and ran to the bread. But it wasn’t long before he ate up all the bread and came back again.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.“Thank goodness we are saved!” Elli cried out. Once the helicopter landed, we got onto it in no time, excited and relieved. When we were safe on the helicopter up in the air, I was amazed to spot that the bear had finally torn down the fence and ran towards the food we left behind. I quickly took out the camera and photographed the rare scene—we were robbed by a polar bear!

Lily:冷静观察(spotted a stream)。

“The stream!” she whispered in a low excited voice (激动地低声说道).“We can follow it downstream. It might lead us to civilization.” James nodded. They began to edge their way (缓缓挪动) towards the stream, their eyes fixed on the bear. Inch by inch (缓慢而谨慎地;一步一步), they moved closer, their hearts pounding (心怦怦直跳). Finally, they reached the stream. James gave a gentle signal, and they turned, putting their backs to the bear as they cautiously stepped into the water. The bear watched their every move But as they moved further away, it seemed to lose interest and eventually turned away, disappearing back into the depths of (……的深处) the forest.
Relief flooded through their bodies as they continued their downstream journey. The light of the moon guided them through the night, and they whispered encouraging words to each other (彼此低声鼓励) as they pressed onward. Hours later, they stumbled upon (意外发现;偶然遇见) a small village, its lights twinkling in the distance. They had made it. Their hearts were filled with joy and gratitude (心中满是喜悦与感激) as they walked towards the warmth of a new beginning. The journey home was long, but with every step, they grew stronger, knowing that they had faced their fears and emerged victorious in the end
James gave a gentle signal, and they turned, putting their backs to the bear as they cautiously stepped into the water
It was a huge bear, its fur a mixture of brown and black, and its eyes flashing with a violent light. The bear smelled the air, and then its gaze settled on the three friends.

We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force, starting with a drill. So strong was the safe that it was difficult for me to drill a hole immediately. Plus, the boy’s weak breath urged us to act quickly. “Stay back and you’ll be alright,” I reassured the helpless boy in a comforting voice I examined the safe carefully, pointed the drill to its front door and turned on the drill. As the drill was roaring, I could even sense the parents’ anxious eyes fall on the drill How time flew! Two hours saw our success in drilling a small hole and then we would cut the safe. Luckily, the mother who calmed down, offered us some relative possible combinations.
Then, just as we started to make the first cut, my workmate typed in the correct code. “Click!” the door of the safe opened. As the boy poked his head out of (探出头来) the safe, thunderous applause and cheers filled the basement (雷鸣般的掌声和欢呼声响彻地下室). Everyone in the scene felt the stone in their hearts falling down to the ground The boy’s parents approached and gathered him in their warm embraces, tears of gratitude and relief welling up in their eyes. Mission accomplished perfectly, the family conveyed their hearty thanks to us again and again. Pride overwhelmed me (我骄傲极了). The boy’s narrow escape was a reminder of why I chose to serve in the fire department—to protect and save lives, whatever happened.
The thrilling rescue mission would be engraved in my heart forever (永生难忘) which displayed the true meaning of being a firefighter. Whatever the danger is, just go all out and extend your helping hand readily.
The boy’s parents approached and gathered him in their warm embraces, tears of gratitude and relief welling up in their eyes.

Monday
“I feel it’s marked out just like a large chessboard!”Alice said①.“There ought to be some men moving about somewhere—and so there are!”she added happily, and her heart began to beat quickly with excitement as she went on.②“It’s a great huge game of chess that’s being played. How I wish I were one of them!”
She looked rather shy at the real Queen as she said this, but the Queen only smiled pleasantly, and said③,“That’s easily managed. You can be the White Queen’s Pawn, if you like, as Lily’s too young to play.”Just at this moment, somehow or other, they began to run.
Alice could never quite make out how it was that they began. All she remembered was that the Queen went so fast that it was all she could do to keep up with her, and still the Queen kept crying“Faster! Faster!”④
The most curious part of the thing was that the trees and the other things round them never changed their places at all: However fast they went, they never seemed to pass anything. “I wonder if all the things move along with us.”thought
Alice. The Queen seemed to guess her thoughts, for she cried,“Faster! Don’t try to talk!”⑤
Not that Alice had any idea of doing that. Just as Alice was getting quite exhausted, they stopped. Alice looked round her in great surprise⑥.“Why, I do believe we’ve been under this tree the whole time!”
“Of course,”said the Queen,“how else would you have it?”“Well, in our
country,”said Alice,“you’d generally get to somewhere else—if you ran very fast for a long time.”⑦

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside“the polar bear capital of the world”—the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears—like all wild animals—should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.①
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire.② He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.③
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew.⑤ We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air.④ Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though—he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter, I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burned the bear’s eyes, but didn’t hurt him. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar, the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.⑥

filling his red swollen eyes, he roared and smashed his powerful paws madly against the wire fence. I froze with terror, my palms sweating.
Apparently calmer than me, Elli grabbed the garlic bread and threw it at the bear. He stopped, sniffed and then wolfed it down. However, in not even a minute he banged again. With a loud crack, he tore down the fence, rushed in and charged straight for us! Elli and I huddled together. The icy wind howling, nothing could be heard but the beat of our hearts thumping. At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. The noise of its engine swept away our choking fear immediately and frightened the bear, who took a few hesitant steps back. Out of the helicopter descended a rope to pull us up. Thrilled but relieved, we caught the rope tightly and eventually landed on the helicopter, safe and sound.
What a thrilling experience! While overlooking the camp from
aboard, I was amazed to spot the bear clumsily ran towards the
leftovers of our dinner. Without delay, I reached into my backpack, pulled out the camera, and froze the impressive moment.

The sun was setting, casting a golden light over the dense forest. Lily and her friends, James and Emily, were lost in the wilds, their hearts heavy with fear and uncertainty. They had been exploring the unexplored for days, but a wrong turn had led them off the course.
The air was filled with the whispering of insects and the rustling (沙沙声) of leaves in the wind. Lily held her compass (指南针) tightly, but it seemed to be swinging in circles, offering no clear direction. James, their fearless leader, scanned the horizon for any sign of civilization, but the only thing visible was the shades of trees stretching into the distance.
Emily’s face was pale, her eyes filled with tears. She grabbed a branch tightly, as if it could provide some comfort in this moment of desperation. Lily reached out and grasped her hand, offering a silent promise.
“We’ll find our way,” James said, his voice steady. “Just stay close and trust each other.”
Just then, they heard a distant roar that shook the ground beneath their feet.
The roar grew louder, echoing through the forest like a thunderclap. Lily’s heart skipped a beat, and she tightened her grip on Emily’s hand. James raised his arm, signaling them to stay silent and still.
Slowly, the source of the roar emerged from the shadows. It was a huge bear, its fur a mixture of brown and black, and its eyes flashing with a violent light. The bear smelled the air, and then its gaze settled on the three friends.
James moved forward, his hands raised in a calming gesture. “Stay still,” he whispered. “Don’t make any sudden movements.”
Lily’s mind raced. She knew they had to find a way to escape, but with the bear blocking their path, every option seemed impossible. Suddenly, she spotted a small stream nearby, its water glinting (闪光) in the fading light.

I worked at a local station of the Berlin fire department. We got an alert (警报) around 8:25 pm that Friday and rushed to the fire engine, where the printout from the dispatcher (调度员) said there was a nine-year-old boy locked in a safe.
I asked myself: if it were a safe, would it be airtight? I was aware that it might already be too late by the time we arrived. I had to plan for a bad outcome. On the other hand, if we were in time, how long would it take us to open the safe? I knew it would be an incredibly difficult task. It’s what safes are designed for—not to be opened.
It took less than five minutes to reach the property. When I saw a woman crying on the street, I knew the situation was serious. She was the boy’s mother and she led us into the basement. She told us the boy was alive and we started talking to him; he was very calm. We asked how it had happened: during a game of hide-and-seek with his five-year-old brother, he had thought the safe would be a good place to hide.
The boy’s parents had got the house from his mother’s father. The unlocked safe had been there when they moved in and was in an area they didn’t use much. The boy’s little brother had shut the safe, then he couldn’t open it again. The only person who knew the combination was the boy’s late grandfather.
From the outset, the biggest priority was getting oxygen to the boy. We got oxygen from the hospital. The boy said that he could feel a thin stream of air. I asked his parents if anyone had opened the safe before and they said no. So we had to guess a six-digit code. We started typing them in—but we had to wait 10 minutes between each attempt before we could try again. So quickly we tried them all. No luck.

We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force, starting with a drill.
