Week 10
Monday
As I ran, my fear grew stronger each minute. What was I to do now? At sundown how could I go back to the boats and face those cold-blooded killers? Wouldn’t the fact that I’d run away tell them I knew of their treachery (背叛)?① It was all over for me. I would never see my friends or my home again. I would either starve to death on the island or the pirates (海盗) would catch me and wring my neck like a chicken②.
At last I came to a part of the island where there were tall pine trees. Here a new danger brought me to a halt and set my heart racing.③
I saw something move behind the trees. Was it a man or a bear? Couldn’t tell. It was dark and shaggy and moved with great speed.④
I stopped, trying to think what to do. I was cut off on both sides. Behind me the murderers, ahead of me the thing in the trees. Wherever I went it followed me, darting from tree to tree like a deer. It ran like a man
on two legs but it was bent over almost double.⑤ I began to think of what I’d heard about cannibals and was on the point of calling for help. Then I remembered my loaded pistol in my pocket. Taking courage, I walked straight towards the man of the island. He was hiding behind a tree-trunk. Seeing me, he came out and took a nervous step towards me. Then to my surprise he threw himself down on his knees.⑥
④用move with great speed表现本身影迅捷
走来), take a nervous step towards (紧张地朝着……迈一步)和throw oneself down on one’s knees (跪下),生动地刻画了人物的动作
No longer hesitating, ① (他像鹿一样朝大厅飞奔). Noticing him moving towards the lift, a security guard ② (径直朝他走来) and shouted what he was up to. “Nothing,” he answered. The guard frowned, shook his head and walked away.

Thursday
Emily and Zoe had been best friends since second grade. They went to the same school, played on the same soccer team, and even wore matching bracelets (手链). Everyone around them said they were like two sides of the same coin.12 They believed nothing could come between them.⑦ But things started to change when a new girl Daisy came to their class.⑤
One day, their teacher, Mr. Lynn, announced a big group project.①“Pick a partner,”he said. Emily immediately turned to Zoe, expecting her usual smile and a quick“yes”.⑧ But to her surprise, Zoe was already talking to Daisy.“I’m going to work with Daisy this time,”Zoe said to Emily, almost too casually. Emily felt like the air had been knocked out of her. She nodded and forced a smile, but inside, she was confused and hurt.③ That night, she stared at her phone screen, hoping for a message that never came.⑨
Over the next few days, she avoided Zoe. Their texts stopped, they no longer sat together during lunch, and the bracelets they once wore daily were now left at home. Even during class, Emily found it hard to focus, her mind replaying the moment when Zoe chose someone else.⑩
Weeks passed.② The school organized a three-day camping trip in the mountains. Students were divided into several groups. Emily and Zoe ended up in the same one, along with Daisy and two other classmates. Though they barely spoke, they worked together to put up tents and gather firewood.⑥ Their conversations were limited to short, polite exchanges—nothing like before.
On the second night, dark clouds rolled in and heavy rain soon followed.④ Everyone rushed into their own tents. Emily quickly discovered that hers was leaking. Cold and upset, she went outside, seeking for help.11 The wind howled around her, and each raindrop felt like a tiny needle against her skin.13
Just then, she saw a flashlight approaching.
With Zoe’s help, they soon fixed the tent.

When I first met George, I was in my early 30s, trying to find something creative to get away from the boring housework and raising little ones. My children, then aged three and five, were just entering kindergarten and school life.
At 55, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years—until the day he died.
George was a man who lived life to the full; he worked hard, played hard, and had an opinion about everything. He loved his wife, his family, his friends, and took pride in his fitness and health and walked three kilometres every day. And as the only male in a painting class full of women, he looked after everyone with the same attention.
He took to painting with a great passion and commitment, even transforming the spare bedroom of his home into a studio (工作室). His painting equipment was comprehensive—an easel (画架), quality paints, brushes, palette, canvases, charcoal pencils, etc. George housed many of these items in a red metal tool box with the original shop sticker with the price. Not fancy, but shiny and very red.
For about six years George and I studied together until the completion of the course drew us apart. We kept in touch as we lived within a couple of kilometres of each other. I’d sometimes see him on his daily walk or at the local shops and occasionally we’d chat over an afternoon tea.
Last year George was about 80 years old. He rang one day and asked me to come to his house.

“Hey, Isaac!” Dayna said. There was a touch of awkwardness in her voice. “Feeling ready for this year’s baking competition?” Dayna’s initiative greetings really surprised me.
“Do I look worried?” I forced a polite smile. To be honest, I had been hoping to fix our relationship but worried about being turned down and making things worse.
Dayna and I used to be best friends. Our shared love for baking brought us together, leading us to join Mrs. Cooper’s baking classes. We always supported each other during the lessons, which greatly enhanced our baking skills. Last year, I cheered for her to win the championship, but we were in such an embarrassing situation just because of an argument.
“Prepare to be amazed,” I said. She shot me a doubtful look. “We’ll see.” Today was the day of this year’s competition, whose theme was “cupcakes”. We entered the kitchen at the Students’ Baking Club, where we attended baking classes every Saturday. Families and friends filled a makeshift seating area. After explaining the competition consisted of two rounds, Mrs. Cooper announced the official start of the competition. Immediately, all the contestants quickly dived into their work.
As I was working on my creations, I couldn’t help glancing at Dayna now and then because I was so used to checking on her when baking. Dayna, on the other hand, was completely focused. Her hands were moving skillfully as she measured, mixed, and poured. She didn’t seem to be affected by our current relationship at all, or maybe she was just better at hiding it.
Everything went very well. Soon, Mrs. Cooper announced that Dayna, two other contestants, and I were advancing to the final round. In this round, I got right into my zone. But I quickly realized I hadn’t packed the chocolates that I used for decorating. It was my magic weapon for winning! Sweat rolling down my face, I didn’t know what to do.

George explained that he was giving away something to me. “I can’t paint, but I don’t know why I ever thought I could. This box is for you.” he sighed, staring at the red metal box. I was a little annoyed by his words, because he had painted some unique and wonderful works. However, George insisted on giving up painting, and his determined look showed no one could persuade him. Presenting all his painting equipment to me, George said in a cheerful voice (用欢快的声音), “You are talented and are most likely to use it.”
I failed to persuade him and felt quite upset about his decision. I accepted this precious gift on the condition that (条件是) he could reclaim it at any time. He never did, of course, and I still use much of his equipment today. As I paint I often remember George, his big personality, and generous spirit. The most treasured item is the red tool box, still in good shape (状况良好), and red. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price is worn off. But that’s all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price.
However, George insisted on giving up painting, and his determined look showed no one could persuade him.

Dayna must have sensed my panic. She glanced over at (瞥了一眼) me and quickly realized what had happened. Without hesitation (毫不犹豫地), she walked over to my table and handed me a bag of chocolates. “Here, you can use these,” she said with a smile. “We’re friends, aren’t we?” Her words warmed my heart and made me realize how much I had missed our friendship. I quickly got back to work, using the chocolates to decorate my cupcakes. With renewed confidence, I focused on making the best cupcakes I could.
Thanks to Dayna’s chocolates, I won! When Mrs. Cooper announced my name as the winner, a rush of emotions overwhelmed me (万千情绪涌上心头). I walked over to Dayna and gave her a hug. “Thank you so much,” I said sincerely. “You’re welcome,” she replied. “I’m just glad you won.” We shared a laugh and another heartfelt hug As we walked out of the kitchen together, I knew that our shared love for baking had brought us back together And this time, I was determined to never let anything come between us again
Her words warmed my heart and made me realize how much I had missed our friendship.
