One hot summer evening, after a walk in the country, Rose became very weak and pale, and confessed (承认) she felt ill. By the next morning she was in a dangerous fever, and Mrs. Maylie and Oliver were afraid she might die①. Mrs. Maylie sent Oliver to the nearest town, four miles away, to post two express letters. One was to Dr. Losberne in Chertsey, the other to Harry Maylie, Mrs. Maylie’s son.
Oliver, filled with anxiety, ran as fast as he could along the country roads
and across the fields until, hot and exhausted, he reached the town. He posted
the letters and turned to hurry home again.②
Mrs. Maylie and Oliver passed a sleepless night③, and Rose grew steadily worse as the fever burned in her. Oliver said every prayer he had ever learnt ten times over.
Late the next day Dr. Losberne and Harry Maylie arrived, and the house was
full of worried faces and anxious whispers.④ But the danger passed, and by the next night Dr. Losberne was able to announce that, though seriously ill, Rose would not die. Oliver cried for joy.⑤

Have you ever been so depressed that you can’t sleep?④ You also can’t eat.⑤ You can’t read.⑥ You have no friends to call up and nothing is good on TV. So you sigh, press your face down harder into your pillow, and shed a few tears.
This was my life two years ago. I had just turned 14 but already found life a struggle. As I lay in my bed one Saturday, Mom peeked (瞄) into my room to make her regular“Is Emily still alive”check.① I knew that if I spent more time like this, she would begin dusting me. After suggesting a few things for me to do that I immediately rejected, Mom made her move,“Emily! Get dressed! I’m taking the dog out for a walk, and you’re coming with me!”“Why?”I protested.“Because it’ll make you feel better.”
The thought of moving was unbearable.③ I felt as if all of my body parts were weighed down by tons of bricks. I couldn’t remember the last time I had gone outside.⑦ Somehow I found the strength to slip on a pair of jeans and a black sweatshirt. Mom was waiting at the door, leash (狗绳) in hand and dog at her side.② →“我”抑郁的具体表现,可以协同到续写部分,写“我”的情况如何改善
Then, we stepped outside. It was a warm March day and it had been a long time since the warmth of the sun had touched my cheeks.⑨ Mom led the dog and me down some dirt paths, through a big field and reached Halsey Pond. But the signs of spring had yet to appear and the scene was rather colorless throughout the entire journey.→春天象征着蓬勃的生命力,此时出门,

“I’m tired! It’s boring, Mom! When can we go home?”“Not yet,”she’d say. Mom stopped to say hi to every jogger, dog walker, runner, and bicyclist who passed us. After walking for what seemed an age, Mom finally said it was time to go back.⑧

It was a beautiful sunny day when Martin went out into the backyard. It would have been a perfect day to play. But Martin wasn’t out there to play.
Two months before, so interested had Martin been in playing the flute (长笛) that he asked his mother to buy him the expensive flute and promised to practice at least thirty minutes every day. But it can be difficult to concentrate on a flute when your room is full of cool stuff like a TV, video games and the Internet. So Martin’s mother sent him to the backyard to practice, where there would be no distractions
Martin sat down on the grass and brought the flute to his lips. He began doing his fingering exercises with his eyes closed. You have to close your eyes when you want to concentrate on stuff. Anyway, he played for a good forty or fifty seconds before he heard a familiar sound: “Hey, Martin.”
He looked in the direction of the voice and saw the face of his friend, his next-door neighbor, Kris, who was smiling at him from the fence. “I just got a new movie!” he said, “Want to come over and check it out?”
Well, that was exactly what Martin wanted to do. He loved movies but he shook his head and said sorry. Kris seemed disappointed, but he also understood that Martin had to practice a lot when learning a musical instrument. So he left and watched the film by himself.
Martin was alone with his flute. He closed his eyes and started his fingering exercises again. But he couldn’t concentrate. He wasn’t anything like his father, a biologist. Martin had been to his lab many times. He couldn’t understand why his father could concentrate on his researches for so long a time. When he was thinking, his father came over.

The sun burned hot over a small village where the earth smelled of ripe cashew (腰果) and dust. I was the village bad boy because I had no interest in school or studies. Mud on my knees, dirty words on my tongue and a pack of restless troublemakers at my heels, I was the boy mothers warned their sons about. School? A prison. Books? Useless weight. The only lessons I cared about were what the fields taught: how to climb a cashew tree without being hurt, how to tell when the fruit was sweetest, how to outrun the teacher catching me skipping school again.
No one thought I would do anything worthwhile with my life. “Why waste time on him?” they’d tease, watching me whistling through the lanes. “He’ll end up back on the farms anyway. Some boys are just weeds, amounting to nothing.” Even the cashew trees seemed to whisper it when the wind blew. It seemed the village had already written my fate.
But my mother, uneducated, visualised a different future, refusing to let the world bury me alive. Every time I collapsed onto the bed intending to skip school, she seized my arm and beat me until I got dressed. “You will not rot here!” she shouted, marching me to the classroom door and watching me enter, her shadow like a stubborn cashew tree.
This bad boy image troubled me. I didn’t believe I was a bad boy and never wanted to be one. These thoughts lingered in my mind, like mosquitos buzzing around our cashew apples. For years, I had been torn by this contradiction. Then, one evening, as I sat on the farm’s edge watching the sun bleed into the cashew fields, the truth bit harder than any insect: I was becoming exactly what they said—a boy with nothing. No respect. No future.

Version 2
When I got home, a new feeling seemed to be awakened. The heavy bricks weighing me down before seemed to have lifted a bit.Yet the warmth of the sun seemingly lingered long enough to send me to a long⁃forgotten sound sleep. For the following few days, I began to recover the long⁃lost flavour of Mom’s cooking. I even began to pick up the books piled in the corner, dust them off, and rediscover the smell of ink, the sound of pages turning. The walking, admittedly, had brought me a breath of fresh air and this newfound feeling drove me to step outside again.
A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I could take the dog out. Mom handed me the leash, smiling, “Make a move!” So there we went, along the paths lined with trees wearing green clothes, and through the field where flowers grew green leaves—everything was alive. My dog sniffed the smells of spring and pulled me all along, his tail wagging merrily. It felt good to venture again into the warmth. Before I noticed it, we had reached Halsey Pond, where I found myself greeting every passer⁃by with a small wave. It was then that I knew for sure nature had brought a certain change to me, as certain as the arrival of spring.

His father smiled when he noticed Martin’s absent⁃mindedness. “Having trouble concentrating on your flute practice again?” his father asked sympathetically. Martin nodded, his face blushed. Recalling visits to his father’s lab, Martin admitted, “I don’t understand how you can concentrate for so long. My mind wanders during flute practice.” Understandingly, his father said, “When you love what you do, it becomes easier. But daily persistence is equally important. That makes what I am today.”He then looked inquiringly at Martin, “Do you really have the passion for playing the flute?”
Martin felt ashamed and then he nodded, saying he hoped to be a great flute player. Throwing his father a determined look (坚定地看了某人一眼), Martin picked up his flute and focused on the melody he was creating, shutting out the distractions of the outside world. Minutes turned into an hour, and Martin found himself immersed in (沉浸于……) his practice. Days turned into weeks, and Martin’s focus improved. As Martin’s passion grew, so did his proficiency. The backyard became a place of joy and inspiration. He discovered the joy of concentration, and with passion as his guide, there were no limits to his potential as a musician.
(Martin found himself immersed in his practice之后):
·It was right then that Martin realized if he moved forward every day with the same passion, persistence and drive that had brought him this far, he could reach his goal of being a great flute player.
·One evening, as Martin played a melodious piece in the backyard, Kris appeared at the fence again, but this time, he didn’t interrupt. Instead, he listened quietly, captivated by (被……迷住) the beautiful sound of the flute. When Martin finished playing, Kris clapped and exclaimed, “Wow, Martin, your play sounds amazing!”

It hit me that education was my only way out. Since then, I said goodbye to my bed to be the early bird every morning in my class and even stayed late at school after everyone left, my fingers marked with pen ink instead of dirt. While my old friends were stealing fruit, I was stealing hours from the night, buried in textbooks. I struggled for exams like hell (非常,极其) and my grades inched up (成绩慢慢上升) gradually until the day the university’s admission letter arrived. Clutching (紧握;抱紧;抓紧) the letter, I dashed home excitedly and eagerly told my mom the great news. But as the rush of joy faded (当喜悦退去), I knew this paper was just the first step toward what awaited me in university life.
I put in some cashew seeds when packing and headed for the university. It was an eye⁃opener (使人大开眼界的事情): lecture halls humming (发嗡嗡声) with debates, library shelves cradling knowledge. When I mentioned the cashew trees of my hometown during my presentation, the blank yet fascinated expressions drew my thoughts back to the cashew seeds in my backpack, sparking my determination to research on this. Years later, my research received global recognition (获得国际认可), but better than that was the proud moment when my mother, that same stubborn figure, held my papers up high to the neighbors. The former “bad boy” finally blossomed—not with mud, but with the seeds of perseverance
When I mentioned the cashew trees of my hometown during my presentation, the blank yet fascinated expressions drew my thoughts back to the cashew seeds in my backpack, sparking my determination to research on this.

1.Some boys are just weeds, amounting to nothing.
2.“You will not rot here!” she shouted, marching me to the classroom door and watching me enter, her shadow like a stubborn cashew tree. “你绝不能烂在这里!” 她怒吼着,押送我到教室门口,盯着我走进去,她的影子如同一棵倔强的腰果树。[将母亲比作“stubborn cashew tree(倔强的腰果树)”,既呼应村庄环境,又象征其坚韧不屈的形象]
3.These thoughts lingered in my mind, like mosquitos buzzing around our cashew apples.
4.For years, I had been torn by this contradiction. Then, one evening, as I sat on the farm’s edge watching the sun bleed into the cashew fields, the truth bit harder than any insect: I was becoming exactly what they said—a boy with nothing. No respect. No future.
