Recently, I was talking with the mother of a student I taught nearly 15 years ago. “He still has his magazine! I know exactly where it is,” she said. It might be surprising that a young adult has kept a middle school English assignment for over a decade, but I often hear this about my favorite activity: the magazine project.
Originally, this project was designed to solve a common problem in teaching writing: How can we fully engage students so that they will take the time to edit, revise, and polish their work? I know that letting students choose their writing topics can improve engagement, so I created a project that asks students to choose a topic of personal interest and spend most of a semester writing, designing, and publishing their own magazine on that topic. The combination of topic choice and a final published magazine greatly improves my students’ investment in their writing all semester long.
When I introduce the project, this big choice usually attracts students, but many don’t believe that they really do get to choose. They fire questions at me, asking if their whole magazine can be about adventure rides, or the vast mystery of space. I always assure them that they can write about whatever interests them. I can’t possibly anticipate what kinds of writing might engage every eighth grader, and giving them a free choice is the best way to do that. Consequently, our classroom becomes lively as writers eagerly share ideas.
Twenty-five years ago, students stuck their pages together. But now we give them the option of creating an online magazine using modern technology. This eliminates printing expenses while developing valuable computer skills. We usually schedule the final due date just before our school’s open house so that the magazines can be displayed for the community.
These unique magazines make a powerful statement about what matters to our students. And every time a former student tells me they still keep their magazine, it confirms the true meaning of this project.
24. What was the students’ main problem in writing?
A. Low confidence. B. Limited techniques. C. Weak motivation. D. Insufficient materials.
25. What made students highly engaged in the project?
A. Chances for adventures. B. Personal choice of topics.
C. Talks with famous writers. D. Discussion of mysteries.
26. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Academic pressure limits creativity. B. Good habits should be formed early.
C. Modern technology transforms education. D. Personal involvement creates lasting value.
27. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Innovative and supportive. B. Thoughtful and brave.
C. Energetic and competitive. D. Humble and responsible.

For several years now, the countryside has no longer functioned merely as a picturesque counterpoint (对比物) to the city but has become an active laboratory for new relationships between the landscape and people. Trace of Land is one of the examples.
Designers reinterpret the ha y bale (干草捆) as spatial equipment that unfolds across the fields of Val Badia in the Italian Dolomites. Presented as part of the international open-air art event — SMACH 2026, the project transforms an agricultural object into a canopy-like (类顶篷的) structure that follows the landscape, offering places for shade, rest, and gatherings.
The land art equipment is a continuous path made of unfolded hay bales. It moves with the outline of the Alpine landscape. Removed from its functional role in farming, the ha y bale becomes both sculptural and architectural, drawing attention to the relationship between human labor, tools, and the land.
Often seen as typical parts of farm life, hay bales are in fact products of industrialized processes, stored and transported by machinery. In Trace of Land, this industrial form is loosened and reshaped, creating a structure that switches between lying on the ground and lifting lightly to form shaded passages. The result is a temporary canopy that strikes a balance between agricultural efficiency and the natural setting. In line with the theme of SMACH 2026, ha y bales represent the reciprocal relationship between humans and the land, enhancing the dialog between people and the environment.
Visitors are invited to walk along and beneath the structure, using box-shaped bales arranged as seating to pause and reflect. As time passes, the hay will naturally break down, returning to the soil and completing a cycle of use and renewal.
28. What role is given to the ha y bale in the project?
A. A farming tool. B. A storage device. C. A relaxation zone. D. A cultural platform.
29. What does the underlined word “reciprocal” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Formal. B. Casual. C. Mutual. D. Distant.
30. What can we learn about the ha y bale structure from the text?
A. It is a permanent architectural work for farming. B. It combines artistic value with practical functions.
C. It aims to promote modern industrialized farming. D. It is designed to replace traditional agricultural tools.
31. Which column of a website might the text be taken from?
A. Redesigning the countryside. B. Advocating farming techniques.
C. Remodeling urban landscape. D. Talking with agriculturalists.
D
Instructing parents to switch channels from violent shows to educational TV can improve their kids’ behavior, a new study found. “It’s not just about turning off the television. It’s about changing the channel. What children watch is no less important than how much they watch,” said lead author Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a doctor and researcher at Seattle Children’s Research Institute.
The study involved 565 Seattle parents, who regularly filled out TV-watching diaries and questionnaires measuring their child’s behavior. Half were guided for six months on getting their 3-to-5-year-old kids to watch shows like “Sesame Street”, “Bob the Builder”, “Clifford the Big Red Dog” and “Dora the Explorer” rather than “Happy Tree Friends” or “Power Rangers”. The results were compared with kids whose parents got advice on healthy eating instead.
At six months, children in both groups showed improved behavior, but there was a little more improvement in the TV-watching group. By one year, there was no meaningful difference between the two groups on the whole. However, low-income boys appeared to get the most short-term benefit.
“That’s important because they’re at the greatest risk, both for being producers of aggression (侵害) in real life, but also being victims of aggression,” Christakis said.
Before the study, the children averaged about 2 hours of TV, video and computer game watching a day, with violent content making up about a quarter of that time. By the end of the study, that increased by up to 10 minutes. Those in the TV guiding group increased their time with positive shows; the healthy eating group watched more violent TV.
However, parents weren’t told the study’s purpose, which might have affected results. Dr. Emily Carter, a developmental psychologist at Harvard University, commented that “the short-term gains are encouraging, but we need larger-scale studies to confirm whether content-based interventions can produce lasting behavioral changes.” Meanwhile, Dr. Mark Thompson, a media researcher at Stanford, argued that “focusing merely on program content ignores the complex family dynamics that shape children’s media consumption.”
32. What does the author imply about the traditional view?
A. It stresses time over content. B. It overstates violent shows’ harm.
C. It ignores educational TV’s value. D. It overlooks parents’ guidance role.
33. How was the study conducted?
A. By comparing two groups of parents. B. By interviewing parents and teachers.
C. By observing children in laboratories. D. By analyzing existing TV program data.
34. What does the study suggest about educational TV’s effect?
A. It works better for low-income families. B. Its positive effect may not last long.
C. It is less effective than healthy eating. D. It mainly benefits behavior-troubled boys.
35. What is Emily Carter’s attitude towards the study?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Reserved.

Adam loved football. He loved the smell of the grass as he slid across it. And he loved the excitement when he shot the ball into the net. There was nothing in this world that could weigh the same as football in his heart. He dreamed of growing up to be a professional footballer.
Every day Adam would go to the field and practise with his friends. He still remembered when he asked to join the older boys, they teased (取笑) him, “You’re too small. Football is for big, tough players, not for someone your size.” Then when they saw he could run, kick, and shoot as well as they could, the teasing stopped. Adam played hard and really had a gift. He even became the only one in the group who could do the bicycle kick
One day after school, Adam went to the playground to practise as usual. The boys were talking quietly, casting excited glances at a man who was watching the field. As Adam joined the group, Captain Harold told him the man, called Mr. Smith, was looking for players for his football camp and there would be a tryout match the next day. Adam could hardly contain his excitement. The camp meant there would be professional coaches to train him! He would do anything to join it.
After the practice, Mr. Smith approached and Adam crowded close so he could see him. “Who wants to come to my football camp and really learn to play this game?” Mr. Smith asked. Excited hands shot up. Mr. Smith shook them all and shook Adam’s hand last.
“Little man, I saw you run fast,” he said. “But you are far too thin and short for my camp. You’ll get knocked down in a second.”
Adam looked down so no one would see his disappointment. “It’s not fair! Adam’s been practising with us and he’s the only one who ever did the bicycle kick!” Harold argued.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Dear Alex,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to thank you for your mental health lesson last Friday, which was so interesting and meaningful. It helped me understand the importance of taking care of our mental well-being.
It was from your lesson that I learned it is normal to experience pressure in daily life. Thanks to your advice, such as sharing our feelings with friends and developing healthy habits, I now know how to deal with stress. I also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere during the lesson, in which we felt encouraged and understood.
For future classes like this one, I hope we can have more discussions so that everyone can share their practical ways to manage negative emotions.
Thank you again for the wonderful time! I can’t wait for your next class.
Yours,
Li Hua
Inspired, Adam decided to seize the opportunity. Gathering all his courage, Adam stepped up, looked directly at Mr. Smith and said, “Sir, I really love football and I’ve got tired of hearing people say I’m too small to play. Actually I could do as well as the big boys and even better!” Hearing Adam’s words, Mr. Smith raised his eyebrows and thought for a while. Seeing Mr. Smith hesitate slightly, Adam begged him sincerely for a chance. Finally, Mr. Smith nodded and told him to come the next day.
The next day Adam came to the tryout. The players were divided into two groups and Adam ran actively through the field, seeking a chance to goal. Soon, Harold passed him the ball! Adam positioned himself, jumped as high as he could and kicked the ball with his head down. The ball flew directly into the net! A perfect bicycle kick! When Mr. Smith announced the qualified players, Adam’s heart pounded fiercely. Hearing his name, he hugged Harold and jumped with excitement.

M: Good morning and thank you for coming here today. I’d like to bring you up to date with the change in the school that will affect the children. The school has grown as the local population has increased, so the canteen is always very busy throughout the lunch period. There’s only one serving point, so most pupils have to wait a considerable time to be served. Now we’ve had a new Food Hall built, which will come into use next week. You may be wondering what will happen to the old canteen. We’ll still have tables and chairs in there, and pupils can eat food from the Food Hall or lunch they’ve brought from home. Eventually, we may use part of the canteen for storage, but first we’ll see how many pupils go in there at lunchtime. OK, let’s take a break, and then I’ll talk more about our school.

根据第二段中“Originally, this project was designed to solve a common problem in teaching writing: How can we fully engage students so that they will take the time to edit, revise, and polish their work?( 最初,这个项目旨在解决教学写作中一个常见的问题:如何才能充分吸引学生,使他们愿意花时间进行编辑、修改和润色自己的作品?)”
根据第二段中“I know that letting students choose their writing topics can improve engagement, so I created a project that asks students to choose a topic of personal interest and spend most of a semester writing, designing, and publishing their own magazine on that topic.( 我知道让学生选择自己的写作主题可以提高参与度,所以我设计了一个项目,要求学生选择一个自己感兴趣的主题,并用大半个学期的时间来写作、设计和出版关于这个主题的自己的杂志。)”以及第三段中“When I introduce the project, this big choice usually attracts students, but many don’t believe that they really do get to choose.( 当我介绍这个项目时,这个重大的选择通常会吸引学生,但很多人并不相信他们真的能够做出选择。)”
根据最后一段“These unique magazines make a powerful statement about what matters to our students. And every time a former student tells me they still keep their magazine, it confirms the true meaning of this project.( 这些独特的杂志有力地展现了对我们学生而言重要的东西。
根据第二段中“I know that letting students choose their writing topics can improve engagement, so I created a project that asks students to choose a topic of personal interest and spend most of a semester writing, designing, and publishing their own magazine on that topic. The combination of topic choice and a final published magazine greatly improves my students’ investment in their writing all semester long.( 我知道让学生选择自己的写作主题可以提高参与度,所以我设计了一个项目,要求学生选择一个自己感兴趣的主题,并用大半个学期的时间来写作、设计和出版关于这个主题的自己的杂志。 以及第三段中“They fire questions at me, asking if their whole magazine can be about adventure rides, or the vast mystery of space. I always assure them that they can write about whatever interests them. I can’t possibly anticipate what kinds of writing might engage every eighth grader, and giving them a free choice is the best way to do that.( 他们会向我提出各种问题,比如他们的整个杂志能不能都关于冒险游乐项目,或者关于浩瀚宇宙的神秘奥秘等等。

根据第二段中 “the project transforms an agricultural object into a canopy-like structure that follows the landscape, offering places for shade, rest, and gatherings” 以及最后一段 “using box-shaped bales arranged as seating to pause and reflect” 可知,在该项目中,干草捆被改造为可供人们遮阳、休憩、聚会的空间,承担了休闲区域的功能。
根据第四段画线词所在句 “hay bales represent the reciprocal relationship between humans and the land, enhancing the dialog between people and the environment” 可知,干草捆体现了人与土地的关系,且能促进人与环境的对话交流。
根据第三段 “the hay bale becomes both sculptural and architectural” 以及第二段 “offering places for shade, rest, and gatherings”、最后一段 “arranged as seating to pause and reflect” 可知,该干草捆结构既具备雕塑与建筑的艺术属性,又能提供遮阳、休憩等实用功能,实现了艺术价值与实用功能的结合。
故选 A
D
32. A。 It's not just about turning off.. What children watch is no less important than how much they watch,传统观点过于强调"时间" 而忽视“内容"。
33. A。 Half were guided.. compared with kids whose parents got advice on healthy eating,研究采用两组对比方法。
By one year, there was no meaningful difference

下文“This disturbance ultimately lowers your sleep quality(这种紊乱最终会降低你的睡眠质量)”出现指代紊乱的关键词,E选项“An irregular sleep schedule or sudden changes can disrupt your sleep(不规律的作息或突发变化会扰乱你的睡眠)”介绍造成睡眠紊乱的情况,与下文disturbance对应,逻辑通顺。
上文“One way to improve sleep quality is to wake up at the same time every day, as it can be a little bit more impactful than going to bed at the same time every day.(改善睡眠质量的一个方法是每天同一时间起床,这比每天同一时间睡觉效果更好)”介绍改善睡眠的方法,F选项“Forcing yourself to go to bed when you aren’t yet sleepy isn’t always a good idea(在不困的时候强迫自己睡觉并非总是好事)”承接上文,补充说明睡眠的正确方式,贴合专家观点。

Dear Alex,
I hope you are doing well.

You may be wondering what will happen to the old canteen. We'll still have tables and chairs in there, and pupils can eat food from the food hall or lunch they've brought from home. Eventually we may use part of the canteen for storage, but first we'll see how many pupils go in there at lunch time. Okay, let's take a break and then i'll talk more about our school.

1. engagement 2. reciprocal 3. disrupt 4. craftsmen 5. resistance
What can we learn about the application fee? A. It must be paid before the interview. B. It is an extra cost on top of the program fee. C. It will be returned if students are not accepted. D. It can be waived for students with high GPA.
答案:A
I know that letting students choose their writing topics can improve engagement, so I created a project that asks students to choose a topic of personal interest and spend most of a semester writing, designing, and publishing their own magazine on that topic.
I created a project ③ that
Trace of Land
定位上下文:enhancing the dialog between people and the environment(促进人与环境的对话)
情感形容词题:第 45 题 unwilling(不甘心的)、第 47 题 lost(迷茫的),都可通过情感线快速锁定。
searched through the winding lanes for hours, with a sudden downpour pouring down
as dusk fell, shopkeepers were packing up, streets quieting, and hope fading
floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, with a warm light filling the space
Detours don’t ruin the journey; instead, they lead us to the priceless encounters we are meant to have.

date back to /date from
This is the best film ________ has been shown this year.
The old temple, ________ (date) back to the Tang Dynasty, is well preserved.
________ (couple) with hard work, his talent helped him achieve great success.
The pattern is unique ________ this region.
1. that 2. dating 3. Coupled 4. to
Dear Alex,
I hope you are doing well.

He took a deep breath, clenched his fists and walked straight up to Mr. Smith. Raising his head firmly, he said, “Sir, I know I’m small, but football is my whole life. I practise every day, and I can do bicycle kicks — something most boys here can’t manage. Please give me a chance. I won’t let you down.” His voice was steady, with no trace of tears in his eyes. Mr. Smith stared at him for a moment, a faint look of surprise crossing his face. After a brief pause, he nodded slowly. “Alright, little man. Show up for the tryout tomorrow.” Adam’s heart leaped with joy, and he thanked the man again and again, already picturing himself on the field.
The next day Adam came to the tryout. The morning sun shone across the grass as the boys warmed up. When the match started, Adam ran like the wind across the field, weaving between bigger players with flexible moves. Soon, Harold passed him a high ball from the wing. Without hesitation, Adam leaped backward, twisted his body in mid-air and kicked the ball hard with his right foot — a perfect bicycle kick! The ball whistled into the top corner of the net, and the whole field fell silent for a second, then burst into cheers. When Mr. Smith announced the list of selected players, Adam held his breath. Upon hearing his name, he rushed to hug Harold, eyes shining with excitement. He knew size never defines a player; courage and hard work do.
