I loved weightlifting and began to do that at 12 years old. During my first year of high school, I increased the amount of training and put everything into my dream of one day competing internationally. Unfortunately, I was not a naturally-gifted athlete. But I worked hard. When I was a senior in high school, I won two national championships and earned nine national-level medals in all.
However, I didn’t make it to compete for Team USA. I didn’t meet the requirements for the IWF Youth World Championships team and was later an alternate(候补者) for the Pan-American Youth Championships team. I struggled to accept the fact that I never achieved the goal I worked for during the last four years, representing Team USA internationally. I lost the passion I once had for the sport and took a step back from competing for a few months.
After I started college, I once again came into contact with barbells(杠铃) during my PE classes. Once I touched the barbell again, I just wanted to continue lifting weights and see how far I could physically and mentally push myself. I decided to start training full-time again to see what I could achieve during the rest of my college years.
I stopped caring about the weight on the bar, the girls I was competing against and the idea of being on Team USA. I started focusing on being confident about and consistent with every lift, training with consistent weights on the barbells, skills and positive self-encouragement. Training and weightlifting became a competition with myself, rather than with other weightlifters.
During 2022 National University Championships, I represented Temple as a university student. It was the first competition in my eight years of competing where I felt confident during every lift. The work I put into the six minutes spent on the lift paid off in every way. Later, I became a 2022 All-American athlete and finally made my first international team.
( )4. What did the author achieve in weightlifting as a senior in high school?
A. Discovering her great weightlifting talent. B. Competing in an international game.
C. Becoming a member of Team USA. D. Winning several national medals.
( )5. How did the author probably feel as an alternate for the Pan-American Youth Championships team?
A. Honoured. B. Discouraged. C. Nervous. D. Satisfied.
( )6. What did the author focus on in weightlifting during college?
A. Making progress for herself. B. Increasing weight on the barbells.
C. Competing with other weightlifters. D. Entering international weightlifting games.
( )7. What lesson can we possibly learn from the author’s experience?
A. Set goals and stay focused. B. Push our limits until success.
C. Be ourselves and enjoy the process. D. Get along with those better than us.
C
Lately, one of the hot-button topics in the art world is artificial intelligence (AI). Some people see AI as a means of democratizing creativity. It allows individuals of any skill level to produce stunning pieces quickly and without the expense of some more traditional art. This enables more people who would otherwise be limited by financial challenges to generate work.
AI is also proving beneficial to the business side of the art world. Because it can be created at a lower price than traditional art, those who couldn’t afford to buy art now have more options. Due to its access to data from countless sources, AI can assist in authenticating(鉴定) artworks by analyzing different stylistic elements. Collectors and investors can assess the value of artworks using AI, and the list goes on.
But it’s not all roses. Some worry that AI lacks the emotional depth that human-created art offers. Plus, as AI learns from user inputs and copies artistic styles, determining the rightful owner of AI-generated content has become increasingly problematic. It relies primarily on algorithms(算法) and pre-existing artworks, so there isn’t much creative input. There is also the concern of artists losing work and profits to AI. Because AI drives prices down for art collectors, artists are concerned that making a living as an artist will become completely impossible.
All of these above points ultimately bring us to the big question: Is AI art really art? Like every industry, the art world needs to embrace technological advancements or it will get left behind. While some think of art from AI as a valid form of creativity, others feel that AI can’t truly be classified as art because it lacks the element of human creativity. It’s true that the line between art created by AI and human art is getting less distinct. But from where most artists stand, the fact that non-AI art will always require the human touch and thought process points to the fact that it can never be completely replaced by AI.
( )8. What is a benefit of AI for the art world according to Paragraphs 1&2?
A. Increasing the value of artworks. B. Encouraging people to appreciate art.
C. Making art accessible to more people. D. Helping train more professional artists.
( )9. What does the underlined saying “it’s not all roses” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. There are no easy answers. B. It is a rather unpleasant topic.
C. There are also negative aspects. D. It is a black-and-white issue.
( )10. Who would most likely oppose AI involvement in art?
A. Users who provide lots of data for AI.
B. Experts who determine the owners of AI art.
C. Enthusiasts who appreciate different art forms.
D. Artists whose works are used as AI resources.
( )11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. AI art will not take over human creativity.
B. AI art is a technology without any limitations.
C. The future of art relies heavily on AI technology.
D. AI art is equally as valuable as human-created art.
D
Crowded streets, noise, and unattractive grey buildings can be boring and stressful. A solution to such problems may lie in nature, which can have calming and renewing power.
Introducing vegetation(植被) or colorful designs may make cities more livable. However, growing plants or covering buildings in paint to test these approaches is expensive and inconvenient. Moreover, studying these phenomena outdoors can be tricky, as many factors can affect the final results. “Measuring pleasure and motivation in natural settings is extremely difficult,” explained Prof.Yvonne Delevoye-Turrell of the University of Lille. “Human reactions are sensitive to environmental changes, such as weather or traffic. Consequently, we used virtual reality to measure reactions to these factors in a virtual urban space.”
Using virtual reality, the team created an immersive(沉浸式的) urban environment with either no vegetation or some green vegetation. They also introduced colorful patterns onto a path. Then they invited students to participate in the study. Wearing a VR headset and walking on the spot, the students spent time exploring the virtual environment. To find out where the volunteers were looking and for how long, each headset included an eye tracker.
The researchers found that the students walked more slowly when there was green vegetation present in the experiment, and that their heart rate increased. They would spend less time looking at the ground and more time observing their surroundings. These results, which indicate a pleasurable experience, have also been found when people spend time near vegetation in the real world. Bright color patterns alone did not have quite the same uplifting effect as the green vegetation, but they inspired interest and passion of the students and attracted their stare while increasing their heart rate.
Virtual reality could be a valuable tool for urban planners, enabling them to virtually test the impact of various factors. In the future, the researchers hope to make the VR experience even more immersive to obtain more accurate results. “Smells and sounds could be the next step to truly test the impact of colors on the pleasure of walking,” said Delevoye-Turrell.
( )12. What did Delevoye-Turrell think was challenging for the solution to boring city life?
A. Sensing people’s reactions to pleasure.
B. Having reasonable designs for buildings.
C. Applying VR technology to city planning.
D. Testing the impact of vegetation and bright colors.
( )13. What can be inferred about bright color patterns?
A. They awakened students’ appreciation of their surroundings.
B. They helped students control their strong emotions.
C. They guided students to find greens in real life.
D. They weakened the impact of vegetation.
( )14. What will be the next step for the researchers?
A. Turning the research results into a reality.
B. Promoting the use of VR in urban life.
C. Adding smell and sound tests to the study.
D. Exploring the effects of VR on human behavior.
( )15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. VR plays a role in urban planning
B. Nature empowers people in special ways
C. City buildings take pleasure away from people
D. Colors and greens in cities promote human well-being

In the heart of a bustling city lived a young girl named Sarah. Sarah wasn’t like other children: There were some problems in her legs, which didn’t allow her to walk on her own so she was often in a wheelchair.
Sarah always dreamt of walking like a normal child. When Sarah was about 6 years old, she watched a commercial of Disney World on TV. An idea came to her mind: She wanted to go to Disney World, and she wanted to walk into Disney World by herself. She couldn’t imagine how happy she would be if she could stand in front of the gate leading into Main Street, looking around at the adorable Disney characters.
Sarah’s father, Tim, researched to find the best hospital for her. Tim took Sarah to see many doctors, all of whom said that this was difficult to treat, and that she might never be able to walk like other normal children, needing to sit in a wheelchair for life. Only one doctor said that if Sarah could insist on training day by day, there was a possibility of a full recovery. Maybe one day she was able to live and walk like a normal kid. This idea lifted Sarah and Tim’s spirits.
Over the following years, Sarah worked with the doctor and practiced walking, standing, and balancing—all skills that she would need to turn her goal into a reality. It was hard for Sarah to stand on her own. She knew that she had to become stronger, grow more persistent and have more confidence. Sometimes she struggled to stand up, only to fall down again and again due to lack of strength. She would often look up at the ceiling, a single tear escaping her eye, questioning why it had to be so hard. Although the training was hard and difficult, she never gave up. Witnessing Sarah’s legs becoming stronger and stronger, Dad bought two tickets to Disney World for the next month.

In response to the call of nationwide labour education, a series of hands-on courses were launched last week in our school, such as planting vegetables, making handicrafts and repairing household appliances.
Sewing is one of my favourite courses, where I gained a fundamental glimpse of essential life skills such as sewing a button and knitting a scarf. It was surely a rewarding experience, not only enriching our after-school life but also helping us learn to be independent.
The hands-on courses have won wide popularity among students. If possible, I hope an exhibition could be held to demonstrate students’ well-designed works and display their creativity.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
Sarah made up her mind to walk into Disney World by herself. Every day, she practiced with unwavering determination and tremendous effort. She would fall countless times, but she would always stubbornly pick herself up and persevere. Her father was constantly by her side, offering words of encouragement and unwavering belief in her abilities. Days passed, and her progress was truly remarkable. She could not only stand for increasingly longer periods but also take several hesitant steps on her own.
Paragraph 2:
The big day finally came. Sarah wore a beautiful dress and stood at the entrance of Disney World. With a deep breath and a beaming smile on her face, she took her first shaky step. Her father watched with tears welling up in his eyes as Sarah walked slowly but steadily. The people around, moved by her courage and determination, broke into enthusiastic cheers for her. Sarah fulfilled her long-cherished dream eventually. She knew that this was just the beginning of her new journey, a journey filled with hope and endless possibilities.
