Dear Patrick,
I really want to play the video game Minecraft, but my mom said no. She thinks I should spend more time studying. Now many friends are talking about the game, and I feel left out. What should I do?
Sam
Hi Sam,
When I was your age, gaming was one of my biggest hobbies too. I had great fun with my friends through games, and we became very close. But let’s be honest — games are like the time-eating monster. Sometimes I played for hours and forgot the clock. It left me little time for study.
Still, your mom is right to care about your grades (成绩). Doing well in school is very important for your future. You need to show her that you can enjoy gaming in a balanced way.
Try talking with her. Explain why the game matters to you. Show her your grades to prove that you are responsible (负责任的). Promise (承诺) to manage your time well — and actually do it! If you keep your promise, the “monster” won’t take over your life.
When you grow up, you’ll see that having fun and studying must stay balanced. If you show your mom you can be grown-up about this, she’ll trust you more and feel proud of you.
Patrick

I love all kinds of Chinese dishes, but my favorite is fotiaoqiang, or Buddha. Jumps Over the Wall.
There are different stories about how people made this dish. One story says that in ancient China, many people were very poor and they had nothing to eat. One day, some poor people found leftover (剩余的) food in the river. They picked the food up and got together in an old and empty garden. They cooked it in a pot full of water. Surprisingly, it smelled wonderful! The smell was so good that a passing monk (和尚) even tried to jump over the wall to taste it. And so, the amazing dish fotiaoqiang was born.
For me, the dish has another story. When I was young, my grandparents came to Chengdu to look after me. They often made fotiaoqiang. As I grew older, they went back to Mianyang. Every summer vacation, I would visit them. The smell of fotiaoqiang often greeted me when I walked into their house.
Now I seldom. go back, but the smell of the dish makes me feel like a homesick little monk, ready to jump over the wall just to relive (重温) those good old days.

This summer, I had the chance to visit family in Switzerland. One day, we took a trip to Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The Aare River flows right through the city. Local people often like to jump in and swim downstream (在下游). In this town, it is a popular way for people to travel from work or school.
In my home country, the UK, we don’t have anything like this. So it was a really special experience to try.
The water was freezing! This is because it comes straight from the Alps in Switzerland. When I looked down, I could see that the water was perfectly clean. I let the current (水流) carry me softly down the river. Watching the cars and people pass by felt really relaxing. I could see the city from a different angle (角度).
When we floated down (顺流而下), my cousin explained that people liked to use this river to travel home after they finished work. Students also used it to go home after school. “It’s great on really hot days. It cools you down and also gives you a free ride,” he told me.
What touched me most was the locals’ deep connection to nature and their love for the outdoors. For them, the river isn’t just a means of transportation (交通) — it’s also a way to relax. People in Switzerland can enjoy the natural beauty around them, and this lifestyle shows a special love for their environment. “We can do good things for ourselves and the Earth. What’s more, it’s really fun!” said my uncle.

A. People hold boat races there every weekend.
B. The river flows very quickly.
C. People use it to swim home after work.
D. The water comes directly from the Alps and is very cold.
49. What does the writer think of floating down the river?
A. It was terrible and dangerous.
B. It was boring and too cold.
C. It was difficult because of the strong current.
D. It was relaxing and gave a new view of the city.
50. Why do local people float down the river, according to the writer’s cousin?
A. To miss the heavy traffic. B. To stay cool on hot days.
C. To see a different view. D. To do a special kind of exercise.
51. What does the writer mainly want to show by describing this experience?
