Known as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean”, it takes pride in protecting its natural beauty. The island boasts thick, well-preserved forests covering over 60% of its land, and its crystal-clear waters shine brightly under the sun. In an area full of beautiful natural beaches requiring nothing more but to show up and relax, Dominica inspires travelers to get up and get moving. Must-Try Adventures On land, the forests invite exploration. Morne Trois Pitons National Park has nearly 300 miles of paths. Along the way, you can see falling waterfalls, hot mud pools and small natural springs. Waitukubuli National Trail is the longest one in the Caribbean. It runs 115 miles from the southern end to the northern park. The paths are suitable for all hiking levels, though it’s important to note that some hikes require an entry passport, which can be purchased in advance on the official website. For a bird’s-eye view, a 12-kilometer cable car ride is great. It climbs from the coast to the mountains, offering visitors wide views of green forests, blue seas, and colorful villages. In the sea, popular activities await too. From January to March, hundreds of sperm whales visit the surrounding waters. Small-group boat trips with no more than 8 people per group let visitors get up close to these gentle giants (巨兽). Lucky ones may even swim near the whales, guided by trained staff to ensure safety. Visitors can stay in eco-friendly resorts (度假胜地) near the forests or coast. Many offer all-inclusive travel packages with guided hikes, swimming with fish in shallow waters, and whale-watching. Tips In terms of weather conditions, the dry season (November to April) is more suitable for a visit than the wet season (May to October) due to lower rainfall and more sunny days. However, it is important to note that whale watching is only available from January to March. Whether you love exploring landscapes (风景), chasing adventure, or escaping the noise and crowds of the city, this island’s charm will leave you with lasting memories. 21. What is Dominica famous for? B Twelve-year-old Hayden Roland from Montana has always had a special connection with animals. At home, he cares for two dogs, two rabbits, and two potbellied pigs. Some of them were meant to be temporary fosters (临时寄养) but ended up staying. His great enthusiasm for animals drove him to act beyond his home. In February of the previous year, he founded Wagging Tails, a youth volunteer group based at the Maclean-Cameron Animal Adoption (领养) Center in Great Falls, Montana. The group recently celebrated its first anniversary (周年) of helping animals in need. In the United States, nearly 6 million cats and dogs entered shelters (收容所) and rescue facilities in 2024. According to Shelter Animals Count, a national database, most of those animals were then adopted into new homes. Why do animals wind up in shelters? Maybe the animal’s owner loses a job and can no longer afford to care for the pet. Maybe they move to a place where animals aren’t allowed. “You know what? Life gets hard,” says Pam Volk, executive director of Maclean-Cameron. Centers like hers help people rehome their pets when necessary. Volk has known Hayden for years. Hayden has donated his birthday money to the center and done volunteer work there. In 2022, at the center’s annual Fur Ball Philanthropy Award, Volk presented him with the Youth Philanthropy Award. So when Hayden wanted to start Wagging Tails and use the center as its home base, Volk was all in. “How do you make a difference? You find something you’re really interested in,” Volk says. The group began with just Hayden and two friends. Now it has grown to 32 members who meet monthly after school. They do the cleaning, store pet food, and walk dogs. Last winter, they built straw-lined beds for stray cats and placed them around town to offer warmth and shelter. “They just impress me, because they truly are out there,” says Aria Roland, Hayden’s mom, who’s on the center’s board of trustees. “They are not scared to put their ideas out there. They’re not scared to get involved. They impress me, and they give me hope for the future of animals.” “Animals, I feel, should have a voice,” Hayden says. So he and his fellow volunteers use their voices, and actions, to help their furry friends. 26. What inspired Hayden to start Wagging Tails? A. His family’s tradition. B. His deep love for animals. C. Volk’s encouragement. D. The rising number of pet centers. 27 What is Volk’s attitude towards people’s giving up their pets? A. Supportive. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Understanding. 28 Which of the following can best describe Hayden from paragraph 4? A. Easy-going. B. Warm-hearted. C. Peace-loving. D. Well-mannered. 29. Why does Hayden say “Animals should have a voice” in the last paragraph? A. To advise people to keep pets. B. To tell people to train animals. C. To encourage people to talk with animals. D. To call on people to care for animals. 30. What is the main idea of the passage? A. A teen’s volunteer work to help animals. B. Ways to start a shelter volunteer group. C. The challenges of running an animal shelter. D. The serious situation of homeless animals. C An African baobab tree has burst into blossom (开花) at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, and experts believe this is the first time it has ever happened in the UK. Known by the scientific name Adansonia digitata, a baobab can live for more than 3,000 years. For most of the year it has no leaves or flowers — its branches look like bare (光秃秃的) roots reaching into the sky, which is why it is also called the “upside-down tree”. In their native Africa, these remarkable trees can survive long droughts because they can store water in their huge trunks, which can grow more than 10 metres across. That’s as wide as a tennis court. However, these ancient giants are under threat. Their flowers and fruit are in high demand as a superfood because they are full of nutritious vitamins and minerals. A serving of baobab fruit contains more calcium than the same amount of milk and three times as much vitamin C as oranges. However, these trees grow extremely slowly, so new trees cannot quickly replace those that are cut down, or grow more flowers and fruit to replace what is harvested. The Eden Project’s baobab tree was collected as a seed from Malawi in the project’s Rainforest Biome (生物群系) in 2000. The tree, which now is almost as tall as a three-storey house, is about 27 years old. The biome is meant to copy a rainforest environment, with the temperature reaching up to 35°C, for wild baobabs grow in dry and hot conditions. The flowering tree is one of five baobabs at the project. The blossoming baobab has had two flowers, with lots of buds promising more flowers in the coming weeks. The flowers hang upside down, with large white petals (花瓣). The inside parts look like a hairy ball and swing just like the part that moves in an old clock. They only open at night and last about one day. The head of the Eden Project, Andy Jasper, said, “Our expert gardeners will be carefully hand-pollinating (人工授粉) the flowers over the coming weeks in the hope of producing the large fruits.” 31. Why is the baobab tree called the “upside-down tree”? A. Its flowers hang upside down. B. Its branches look like roots upward. C. It grows in special dry conditions. D. It has no short roots under the ground. 32. Why does the author mention “a tennis court” in paragraph 2? A. To show the tree’s great age. B. To explain its living environment. C. To describe its wide trunk vividly. D. To compare different kinds of plants. 33. What makes baobab fruit popular as a superfood? A. Its low cost. B. Its long life. C. Its big size. D. Its rich nutrients. 34. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A. It introduces a flowering baobab tree in the Eden Project. B. It compares wild baobabs with those grown in rainforests. C. It shows the difficulties of planting baobab trees in a biome. D. It explains how to grow baobab trees in hot and dry conditions. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. The growth of baobab trees in Africa B. The influence of the African baobab trees C. The secrets of baobab fruit D. First flowers for UK’s upside-down tree 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you often feel others ask too much of you and you’re near a breaking point, it is probably because you haven’t set clear boundaries (边界). You might fear losing relationships, so you give in easily. 36 Therefore, view boundary-setting as part of self-care to improve your well-being. Here are practical tips on how to set boundaries effectively. Decide where your line is. 37 Before you talk to the person you intend to set boundaries with, determine exactly what you are no longer able to put up with. For example, if you need to leave work on time, tell your boss politely, “I’ll be at my desk until 5 p.m. and available again tomorrow morning.” Practice the conversation. Setting boundaries can be frightening, especially for those who avoid conflict (冲突). 38 This reduces discomfort and makes the real conversation easier. Like any other muscle, the boundary muscle gets stronger the more you use it. 39 The time has come to say it loud and clear. Verbally (口头地) state your needs clearly to avoid misunderstanding. Never do this over text. Approach it as a discussion, not a complaint. For instance, if someone comments on your weight, say, “It makes me uncomfortable when you talk about my body, and I won’t discuss it anymore.” Be flexible. Having flexibility refers to your own needs, which are likely to change over time. 40 Flexibility is important when deciding where our boundaries are placed, with the understanding that people change. What was good for you yesterday may not be good for you today; people who truly grow together know that. If someone crosses your boundary, enforce (强行实施) the consequence you agreed on. Some relationships may end, but that means they were unhealthy to begin with. Remember: You aren’t responsible for others’ feelings. A. Keep your needs to yourself. B. Have the conversation directly. C. After all, your boundaries aren’t fixed forever. D. However, this pattern harms both you and them. E. You can’t set a boundary if you don’t know it clearly. F. Role-play with a trusted friend or in front of a mirror. G. You should ask others for advice on where your line is. 第三部分 语言知识运用(50 分) 第一节 (共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Jackie Faherty is a well-known astrophysicist (天体物理学家) and educator who devotes her life to researching mysterious objects in space.
