People are always surprised to learn that forecasters aren't just involved in weather reporting on T. V, but they could also work at a radio station too. I often get asked how I got interested in weather, believe IT or not. As a teenager, I became nervous of thunder storms, and i'd often check the forecasts to see if any were coming from there. My interest developed, if you are thinking of going into weather forecasting, there are some important skills you need. You have to be good at science. Of course, the essential thing is having the ability to make sense of presence. You won't go too far wrong with that. Another useful scale is being able to translate a forecast into something people at home can understand. Most weather experts study physics and math before going on to do a more specialized course in forecasting. My own way in was somewhat different. As I did a business degree before getting into television as a researcher. I moved around quite a lot at the T. V station and eventually ended up in the weather department where I did my training. Claire McCardell hated being uncomfortable. This was true long before she became one of America’s most famous fashion designers in the 1950s, her influence felt in every woman’s wardrobe, her face on the cover of Time magazine.
When she was just starting out as a fashion designer, in the 1930s, she went on a ski trip to New Hampshire and one evening saw a woman called Mrs. Hale shivering in a thin silk dress. Why, McCardell wondered, couldn’t an evening gown be made out of something warmer, so a woman could actually enjoy herself? Before long, her warm and practical gown won wide popularity.
McCardell made a career out of asking such questions, and helped transform American fashion in the process. She was often dismissed by her bosses for her “crazy” ideas. She was told to keep copying the latest looks from Paris, as was customary in the American clothing industry at the time. But she never abandoned it: Women deserve to be comfortable in their clothes, and in the world.
A glance at a list of McCardell’s innovations provides a crash course in just how limited fashion options once were for American women. McCardell insisted on putting pockets in women’s clothing; previously, pockets were reserved almost exclusively for men. She partnered with Capezio to popularize the ballet flat shoes and the idea that women didn’t always have to wear high-heels. McCardell developed separates: tops and bottoms you could mix and match so that you didn’t have to bring heavy dresses for every occasion.
Perhaps fashion is better understood not as art, but as a form of industrial design. We don’t know the name of the man who invented the potato peelers, but we benefit from his efforts at least twice a week. McCardell fought for recognition in her lifetime. She might take a look at our modern closets, our pockets, ballet flats and separates, and conclude that she did enough, whether we know her name or not.
24. Why does the author mention Mrs. Hale’s experience in paragraph 2?
A. To criticize the unfair social rules against women.
B. To stress the charm of fashionable evening dresses.
C. To show the poor quality of early 20th century clothes.
D. To present the inspiration for McCardell’s design idea.
25. Which of the following can describe Claire McCardell best?
A. Considerate and cautious. B. Unconventional and persistent.
C. Stubborn and modest. D. Intellectual and graceful.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. McCardell offered a crash course in fashion design.
B. Women used to face restrictions in clothing choices.
C. McCardell’s innovations enhanced dressing experience.
D. McCardell’s designs focused on function rather than beauty.
27. What can be inferred about Claire McCardell’s design philosophy from the text?
A. Form follows function.
B. Clothes make the man.
C. Style is the essence of fashion.
D. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The internet of old was like an active market. It was noisy, chaotic, and dynamic. Every click brought you somewhere new, sometimes unpredictable, letting you uncover the joy in exchanging information and thoughts. The internet of today, however, speaks in comforting statements and offers a smooth experience with constant praise.
This has robbed us of something in our nature: the pleasure of exploring and questioning. We’ve willingly become creatures of instant satisfaction. Why wait? Why struggle? The change may seem innocent, but it’s also transforming our relationship with the mental effort required to explore uncertainties. By delegating such effort, do we still own the capabilities that help us navigate (定位) the unknown or even think for ourselves? It is becoming clear that even if the current risk posed by AI doesn’t bring about the collapse of civilization, it will still bring about the quiet yet disastrous decline of what makes us human.
Part of that decline is caused by choice. And the most powerful way to shape someone’s choices is by gaining their trust. Every model is a memory, trained not just on data that help anticipate what we want, but also how to answer in ways that comfort us and confirm us, and in doing so, they manage to maximize engagement and avoid debate. Designed to please us, chatbots don’t simply answer our questions; they shape how we interact with them and determine what gets shown, what gets smoothed out, and what gets silenced.
The early internet was never perfect, but it had a purpose: to connect us, to redistribute power, to widen access to knowledge. Today’s systems are the opposite: Prediction has replaced participation, and certainty has replaced search. But the door to a better future hasn’t shut yet. We can still choose systems that serve rather than control, that offer possibilities instead of mere efficiency. Our humanity and future depend on it.
28. What has the internet lost in its development according to paragraph 1?
A. Diverse viewpoints. B. Extensive information. C. Rapid replies. D. Friendly atmosphere.
29. What does the underlined word “delegating” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Putting in. B. Keeping up. C. Turning to. D. Handing off.
30. How do chatbots gain our trust?
A. By memorizing previous choices. B. By providing approving responses.
C. By presenting opposing ideas. D. By resolving potential problems.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Convenience of the Digital Era B. The Decline of Human Interactions
C. The Rise of AI Answering Models D. The Price of a Smooth Cyberworld
D
At the foot of Yinhu Mountain in Shenzhen, the Yulong landfill — once the city’s largest waste site — is busy in the early morning. After two decades undisturbed, the Yulong landfill’s 2.55 million cubic meters of waste — a volume large enough to fill 1, 000 swimming pools — is now undergoing the nation’s largest excavation (挖掘) and relocation project, with dozens of excavators operating all out.
Located near the city center, the landfill long polluted the nearby neighborhoods with terrible smells and dirty groundwater. Meanwhile, the increasing shortage of land resources has forced the city to fundamentally explore new approaches to tackling this waste pile problem. Now, at the site, trucks transport different categories of waste to sorting centers. After sorting, burnable materials of the household waste are transported to the energy ecological park for incineration (焚烧), thus turning waste into resources.
In the incineration workshop, waste gas is kept above 850°C for at least two seconds to completely break down dioxins, a harmful byproduct. After many steps of purification, the gas released meets higher standards than those of the EU. The project can deal with 330,000 tons of burnable waste and produce 100 million kilowatt-hours of electricity yearly, enough for 26,000 families.
Pan Gong, an expert in solid waste research, said China’s waste-to-energy technology is world-leading. Chinese companies now lead the world in technology, cost control, and operational experience. Most equipment and components have been domestically produced, achieving independent control over the entire industry chain from waste collection and incineration to gas treatment.
China is also sharing its experiences and technologies with the world. Speaking at the launch ceremony of a Chinese-funded waste-to-energy plant in Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz President Japarov said the factory would help solve waste processing issues while generating electricity and creating jobs. As of May 2025, Chinese companies had been involved in 79 overseas waste-to-energy projects. The “going global” of China’s waste-to-energy industry has become a key component of China’s participation in global environmental governance.
32. What was a problem caused by the Yulong landfill before relocation?
A. It occupied too much farming land.
B. It led to shortage of natural resources.
C. It brought unpleasant smells and pollution.
D. It prevented the development of local tourism.
33. Why is the excavated waste from Yulong landfill burned at temperatures above 850°C?
A. To break down harmful substances. B. To burn the waste faster.
C. To reduce the volume of waste. D. To generate more electricity.
34. What is a feature of Chinese waste-to-energy technology according to Pan?
A. It adopts imported guidance.
B. It remains under development.
C. It targets the domestic market.
D. It proves self-sufficient in equipment.
35. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain the working principle of a landfill.
B. To urge global cooperation on waste processing.
C. To compare waste processing technologies at home and abroad.
D. To show the advantages and global influence of China’s waste-to-energy technology.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
End the Cycle of Sleep Anxiety
Nowadays, an increasing number of individuals struggle with insomnia (失 眠) or difficulty in falling asleep, and feel uneasy about sleeplessness. That fear of not being able to sleep is a phenomenon called “sleep anxiety”. 36 Whether you face regular sleep stress or just the occasional troubled night, these practices can help.
Treat sleep trackers mindfully.
Sleep tracking devices and wearables, which can provide useful insights into your sleep quality, are widely popular. 37 This is because you may focus too much on the data from these devices instead of paying attention to your own actual feelings about sleep. Thus, it’s important to have a healthy level of skepticism when it comes to the data and a plan for what you will do with it.
Prioritize pre-sleep wind-down.
Never try to force yourself to go to bed at a specific time. 38 This gentle shift can take the form of unplugging from screens, putting on comfortable clothes and dimming the lights. Any of these can lessen the pressure of trying to fall asleep immediately.
39
Having a consistent wake-up time helps your body recognize when it’s time to get sleepy. A set wake-up time keeps your internal clock ticking on time. When you wake up, your sleep balloon is empty, which is then gradually filled with sleepiness throughout the day. Once it’s full, you feel ready to sleep.
Changing sleep-related habits is only part of the solution. 40 After all, everyone has restless nights sometimes.
A. Maintain a fixed daily morning rhythm.
B. Wake up early to keep energetic all day.
C. Indeed, they offer a full picture of your sleep.
D. Left untreated, it robs you of truly restful sleep.
E. You also need to embrace the natural variability of sleep.
F. Pick a time to switch from daytime to nighttime activities.
G. Actually, they may stress you out and worsen your insomnia.

Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer to the point of silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation, even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, before saying, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached the back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mom was baking. Mom studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Mom asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Mom to her bedroom. There Mom showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking (演讲). When I started on the speech team I was quiet as a mouse, but I ended the year as the winner. It wasn’t easy at first — I wasn’t sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

(范文一)
Dear Editor,
I’m writing to inform you of the changes I’ve made to my lifestyle.
I used to be fond of junk food, which resulted in my being overweight. Longing for a fit figure motivated me to make a change. I decided to adjust my unhealthy eating habits and work out on a regular basis. These days, I stick to regular gym workouts and attach great importance to a balanced diet. Though I have stuck to this schedule for just a few months, I already feel much better physically. I firmly believe I will eventually achieve my goal.
Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
(范文二)
Dear Editor,
I am writing to share with you how my lifestyle has transformed recently.
In the past, junk food was my favorite, leading to excess weight. Eager to get in good shape, I made up my mind to turn over a new leaf. Not only do I cut down on unhealthy food, but I also take exercise regularly. Going to the gym has become my daily routine, and maintaining a balanced diet is never an option but a necessity. Despite having followed this plan for merely several months, I have felt a noticeable improvement. I am fully convinced that I will accomplish what I set out to do.
Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

读后续写范文参考
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha gazed at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She imagined the scene where her momma tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Perceiving Niesha’s anxiety, Momma reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a disarming smile. Restored and determined, she gritted her teeth to find her courage. In front of the mirror parked Neisha continuously practicing from pronunciation to tone, even gesture. “Try harder,” she perked herself up when drowsiness fell upon her.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, and summoned up her courage, “Dear fellow students, …” Niesha cast a glance at Mr Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Niesha’s face. She knew for sure that she had found her courage in the adversity.
