When his daughter Morgan was growing up, Gordon Hartman was heartbroken after watching her on the playground. Other children refused to play with her, mostly because her disabilities meant she couldn’t access (使用,进入) the places where they were playing. The family tried other places but were never satisfied.
“What we found was there was no place that was an easily-accessible park,” Gordon said. So he went home and sold his construction business, bought a large piece of land, and went to work building an entire amusement park for disabled children.
All kids need playtime, and Morgan was no different. The park — named Morgan’s Wonderland — finally offered Morgan that opportunity. What the Hartmans discovered is that kids without disabilities enjoy the park just as much, and they communicate a lot more with everyone when all are included. In fact, three quarters of the park’s visitors are not disabled. And that makes it all the more fun.
Watching the kids play together without barriers makes you realize that we are all the same, and having fun is for everybody. But it doesn’t end there. One-third of the staff also has special needs. Seeing the way they communicate also puts a smile on your face. They take their jobs seriously, and they make sure everybody is having fun.
“It feels fantastic because we get to see people who are not given the opportunity to experience the types of rides we have, get on a train easily, and go fishing,” says Gordon. The park has been visited by people with special needs from over 67 countries. “When we opened this, we didn’t know if it was going to work,” says Gordon. “All we wanted to do was bring people together and play.”
Just look at the smiles at Morgan’s Wonderland, and you’ll see how much good it does.

If you thought that your children’s academic (学业的) performance is based simply on the number of hours spent on studying, you are wrong. Good grades are a result of various factors, including everything from the children’s brains to the environment they are in. And one of the major, mostly ignored, influencing factors is physical health. Physical activity and health actually can improve a person’s ability to learn. According to the National Academy of Medicine, exercise can improve a child’s cognitive (认知的) abilities, health, and academic performance significantly.
According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise betters the functioning of the hippocampus (海马), the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. Other forms of exercise like balance exercises, muscle exercises, and resistance training do not have the same result on the brain.
The effect of exercise on memory and thinking is both direct and indirect. Directly, regular exercise gives the ability to increase the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals in the brain that affect the growth of new blood vessels, the health of brain cells, as well as the survival of new brain cells. On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety.
It is believed that the benefits of exercise during the school day are greater than those coming from increasing class time. Furthermore, the greatest cognitive benefits from physical education have been seen to come about when physical education was given either in the first half of the day or midday rather than at the end of the day.
In order to get the children moving, rest time, PE classes, biking or walking to school should be promoted. Activities like after-school sports that used to be held at school should be restarted. Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable option but as an important educational concern.
28.What factor is often forgotten when it comes to good grades?
A.The children’s brains. B. Physical health.
C. A good environment. D. The hours spent on learning.
29.How does exercise influence thinking indirectly?
A.By affecting the survival of new brain cells.
B.By releasing growth factors in large numbers.
C.By influencing the growth of new blood vessels.
D.By improving a person’s mood and sleep quality.
30.What does the underlined word “dispensable” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Unusual. B. Unique. C. Unnecessary. D. Common.
31.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Mental health should never be ignored.
B.Physical education class is really a good option.
C.Exercise may bring about good academic grades.
D.Different exercises have different effects on the brain.

Maths anxiety is older than you might think. A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix Auerbach, worried about the situation and hoping to find ways to deal with it, wrote a little book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It. For a mathematician like myself, the pleasure of reading his book is followed by a sigh of regret that the topic is as important today as it was a century ago.
Why do we fear mathematics? At heart, says Auerbach, it comes down to a basic misunderstanding of what maths is. The fear of messing up a calculation (计算) may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that maths skills and mathematics aren’t the same thing.
What, then, is mathematics? Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. For me, part of the problem is that we are often stuck in the “science” box. If we can be shown the beauty of mathematics, we might stop fearing the calculations supporting it. As a language, what sets maths apart is the common truth — you can become fluent wherever you are from. As an art, the beauty of maths lies in finding its beautiful patterns (模式) that help us to understand the endless, explore art and nature, and delight in the perfection of ideas. Focusing completely on calculation skills misses the joy and excitement that can come from discovering and understanding the patterns, from seeing the artistic beauty of mathematics.
Some experts like to point out that we experience anxiety the same way we experience excitement. In the same way, fear can be negative or positive. Our goal should be to move people from a narrow view of mathematics as only calculations to admire its deeper meanings — as a science, a language and an art.
32.What does the author think of Auerbach’s book in Paragraph 1?
A.It is not important today. B. It overstates the fear of maths.
C. It talks about a common problem. D. It is only popular with mathematicians.
33.Why do people fear mathematics?
A.They can’t do calculations well. B. The math language is too difficult.
C. They don’t get support from teachers. D. They don’t understand what maths really is.
34.How can we see mathematics as an art?
A.By focusing on calculation skills. B. By exploring its beautiful patterns.
C. By using it in scientific inventions. D. By learning it as a unique language.
35.What does the passage suggest we do when learning maths?
A.Express our fear. B. Ask experts for help.
C. Change our opinions about it. D. Learn a new language.

How to Make Friends in High School
Friendships matter a lot for high school students — they encourage confidence, reduce the stress of school life, and support personal growth. However, making friends is not easy for everyone, especially when starting a new school or entering a new class. 36
Join after-school activities.
37 Joining sports, clubs or groups based on personal interests is a great way to meet classmates with similar passions. These places offer natural chances to connect with others. They allow students to chat naturally about things they love, like discussing a song in the music club or planning a match in the sports team, which helps them feel a sense of belonging quickly.
Don’t spend too much time on screens.
Technology is helpful in daily life, but too much screen time may reduce face-to-face communication. 38 This kind of interaction can improve communication skills, which is useful for making friends. For example, working on a group project in the library or playing a team game on the playground lets students talk and cooperate more. They can also set a 30-minute daily limit for phone use after homework, leaving more time for in-person talks.
39
If face-to-face talks make students feel nervous, safe online groups can be a good start. These groups let them share ideas without pressure, helping build confidence, and online friends may even become real-life ones. Students should choose platforms with strict safety rules, never share personal information like phone numbers, and meet online friends in public if they trust each other.
Learn from good examples.
It is helpful to watch how good friends behave — they are usually honest, kind and open.
40 For instance, good friends listen carefully when others share worries and keep promises. Besides, being a good listener and caring about others’ feelings also helps. These small acts make friendships stronger and last longer.
A. Here are useful tips to help you.
B. Practise online interaction carefully.
C. Shared hobbies often bring teens closer.
D. These qualities teach you about friendship.
E. Spend more time chatting with strangers online.
F. Choose activities requiring communication and teamwork.
G. Many students think studying hard can win classmates’ trust.

Last Thursday when the competition exam ended, I changed two answers while the teacher was out answering a call. The eraser marks still stayed at the corner, where revising the answers turned the grade from 95 into 97 — this lying number — My family was really in great financial(财政的) difficulty. Deep in my pencil case hid Jack’s draft paper, which dropped from his desk right at my feet, covered with his neat problem-solving steps.
That night at dinner, Mom handed me the last chicken leg, her fingertips still smelling of dish soap from the 24-hour diner night shift. “Principal(校长) Miller called”, she coughed, “all of the participants of the competition will attend the award ceremony next Monday, and as a winner, you’ll make a speech in front of all the audience.” I didn’t answer but just counted the pieces of cloth for repair on her apron (围裙), remembering her nighttime coughs during overtime shifts. My chopsticks tapped the bowl edge. The real winner should be Jack, who always stayed after class to explain equations (方程式) on the whiteboard. His score was 96.
Rain tapped against the classroom windows the next day. I found Jack in the empty classroom, chewing a dry bread at his desk. His glasses were foggy from the wet walk to school. “Congratulations,” he wiped his glasses, pulling his bag with holes showing the stuffing, “Dad’s lost his job, and I really need that scholarship(奖学金)… never mind.”
Moonlight fell on my speech paper titled “Honesty and Hard Work.” I remembered Jack helping me with math after class, his finger drawing numbers in the air.“ Like this,” he’d say, giving me his eraser when mine broke.
I couldn’t fall asleep all that night. An inner voice echoed: “Do what makes you sleep well.” I stood outside the teachers’ office early the next morning. Through the door crack, I saw Principal Miller’s coffee cup steaming.
