A
Originally from a town in Michigan, my grandmother welcomed me to stay with my grandparents each summer during my early years.
I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond (关系) with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older. Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we’d have tea parties. She’d make beautiful quilts (被子) for each one. I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would use while doing her needle work.
A few years ago, when grandma left this earth, I bid farewell (告别) to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st birthday.
I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow (枕头). It was small and hard. I moved it to the seam (接缝) that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! Instead of thinking that it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing (缝) it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day. I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I had collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow! I made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma always did, and enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble.
What a wonderful birthday that was!

Home is more than just a building; it is the space where daily life unfolds. Most families in cities live in an apartment with several functional rooms. The kitchen is often the heart of the home, where meals are prepared and family members gather to share snacks and stories. The living room serves as a common area for watching TV, entertaining guests, or simply relaxing together. The bedroom, on the other hand, offers privacy and rest.
Inside these rooms, furniture such as sofas, tables, beds and cupboards makes life convenient. However, a comfortable home is not created by furniture alone. It requires the effort of every family member to share housework — washing dishes, sweeping the floor, doing laundry, and cleaning the bathroom. When everyone contributes, the home stays clean and the workload is balanced.
In many families, the father works hard to support the family financially. But supporting the family is not only about earning money. Emotional support, such as listening to children’s problems or helping with homework, is equally important. Mothers, fathers, and even children can all contribute to making the family function well.
One of the happiest moments in family life is when people hold a family party. Whether it is a birthday celebration, a holiday dinner, or just a weekend get-together, a family party strengthens bonds and creates warm memories. During such parties, the living room becomes a stage for laughter, games and heartfelt conversations.
A well-kept home and shared responsibilities lay the foundation for a happy family life.

Have you ever noticed this? When you line up at the supermarket checkout counter, the other lines always seem to move faster than yours. You might check your phone again and again, and even wish you’d picked a different line. Now, a report from The New York Times looks into the math and psychology (心理学) behind it. It also gives simple tips on how to pick the fastest line — whether you’re in a supermarket, a bank waiting to take out money, or a coffee shop waiting for your drink.
Dan Meyer, a US mathematician, says a cart full of things doesn’t tell you everything. “Every person needs some time to say hello and goodbye to the cashier.” he explains. That fixed time is about 41 seconds per person. Each small thing in the basket, like a cola can or breakfast box. Let’s see an example. If there are five people in front of you, each with 10 things, you’ll wait 355 seconds (that’s almost 6 minutes!). But if there’s just one person ahead with 50 things, you’ll only wait 191 seconds (about 3 minutes). It’s surprising, but the numbers don’t lie!
It’s also important to watch the people in line. For example, elderly people usually move more slowly — they might take time to put their wallet back or carry their bags. The things in their carts matter too: four bottles of the same milk check out faster than four different items (like a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a carton of eggs, and a jar of jam), because the cashier can scan the same item quickly. What’s more, US science writer Robert Samuel says about 90 percent of people are right-handed, so they naturally turn to the right when choosing a line. Going left instead gives you a better shot at a faster line. Try these tips next time you’re waiting in line, and you might save time to do something more fun!
41.What does the report look into according to Paragraph 1?
A.Why phones are useful in lines.
B.The math and psychology behind slow lines.
C.How cashiers can work faster.
D.Differences between store and bank lines.
42.How long will you wait if there is one person ahead with 10 things?
A.71 seconds. B.101 seconds. C.131 seconds. D.161 seconds.
43.Which of the following lines may move fastest?
A.One elderly person buying 10 different things.
B.One young person buying 10 different things.
C.One elderly person buying 10 same things.
D.One young person buying 10 same things.
44.What advice does Robert Samuel give for choosing a faster line?
A.Studying the customers.
B.Choosing the left line.
C.Picking someone with a full cart.
D.Studying the goods customers bought.
45.What does the story mainly talk about?
A.How to communicate with cashiers effectively.
B.The psychology of customers in the supermarket.
C.The best time to go shopping at the supermarket.
D.Tips on choosing the fastest line when waiting in line.

When I was a child, our family would go to my grandparents’ every weekend for dinner. Every time we walked into the door, the first thing to greet us would be the wonderful smell of roast beef. But what always made the visits extra special was dessert. My grandmother would always scoop (挖) ice cream for my sister and me and top it with a cherry.
It was a beautiful fall day in my grandparents’ house. I was eleven years old and on my way out the door to see a movie with some friends.
“Take your jacket. It’s chilly outside,” my grandma called from the kitchen.
“Okay!” I yelled back and raced out the door. I could see my friends already at the corner waiting for the bus to take us downtown. Yeah, it was quite chilly outside, but certainly not enough to wear a jacket. So, out the door I went, sans jacket.
The bus picked us up, and we took our seats in the back. Not for a while, the driver stopped to pick up another passenger. It was my grandmother that came up, who walked to the back of the bus, locking me in a death glare (怒视). All the passengers turned their eyes toward me. How could anyone not notice my face go red?
She never said a word as she stood in front of me, with my jacket hanging on her arm. I took the jacket embarrassedly. Still without a word, my grandmother turned around and got off the bus.
That afternoon, I returned to my grandparents’ house with a nervous heart. I thought grandmother would criticize me. It turned out nothing happened. She never said a word. And when it was time for dessert, there was a cherry on top of my ice cream. All was forgiven.

A
Originally from a town in Michigan, my grandmother welcomed me to stay with my grandparents each summer during my early years.

【答案】41.B 42.A 43.D 44.B 45.D
根据第一段中“Now, a report from The New York Times looks into the math and psychology (心理学) behind it.(如今,《纽约时报》的一篇报道深入探究了这背后的数学原理与心理学因素)”可知,该报告探究了慢速队伍背后的数学和心理学原理。故选B。
根据第二段中“That fixed time is about 41 seconds per person. Each small thing in the basket, like a cola can or breakfast box. Let’s see an example. If there are five people in front of you, each with 10 things, you’ll wait 355 seconds (that’s almost 6 minutes!). But if there’s just one person ahead with 50 things, you’ll only wait 191 seconds (about 3 minutes).(每个人所需的这段固定时间大约为41秒。 故选A。
根据第三段中“For example, elderly people usually move more slowly — they might take time to put their wallet back or carry their bags. The things in their carts matter too: four bottles of the same milk check out faster than four different items (like a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a carton of eggs, and a jar of jam), because the cashier can scan the same item quickly.(例如,老年人通常行动更为迟缓——他们可能需要花些时间把钱包放回包里,或是提着购物袋。他们购物车里的东西也很关键:四瓶同样的牛奶结账速度要比四件不同商品(比如一瓶牛奶、一条面包、一盒鸡蛋和一罐果酱)快,因为收银员能快速扫描相同的商品)”可知,老年人通常行动较慢,且相同物品结账更快,结合选项可知,一个年轻人买10件相同的东西的队伍可能移动得最快。故选D。
44.细节理解题。 根据第三段中“What’s more, US science writer Robert Samuel says about 90 percent of people are right-handed, so they naturally turn to the right when choosing a line. Going left instead gives you a better shot at a faster line.(此外,美国科学作家罗伯特·塞缪尔表示,大约90%的人是右撇子,所以他们在选择队伍时自然会偏向右侧。而选择左侧队伍反而会让你更有机会排到更快的队伍)”可知,Robert Samuel建议选择左边的队伍以获得更快的结账速度。故选B。
45.主旨大意题。 根据第一段中“It also gives simple tips on how to pick the fastest line — whether you’re in a supermarket, a bank waiting to take out money, or a coffee shop waiting for your drink.(它还提供了如何选择最快排队的简单提示——无论你是在超市、银行等着取钱,还是在咖啡店等饮料)”及全文可知,本文主要讲述了如何选择排队时最快的队伍的相关技巧和建议。
46.What was special to the author during his visits to his grandparents’ house? (no more than 8 words)
47.How can you understand the underlined part in paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words)
48.Why did the author’s grandmother take the same bus with him? (no more than 8 words)
49.How did the author feel while seeing her on the bus? (no more than 5 words)
50.What do you think of the author’s grandmother? (no more than 10 words)
46.The dessert (with a cherry). 47.Went out without a jacket. 48.To bring the author the jacket. 49.Embarrassed and nervous. 50.She is loving and considerate.
根据第一段中的“But what always made the visits extra special was dessert.(但总是让这些探访变得格外特别的是甜点)”可知,让作者觉得特别的是甜点。故填The dessert (with a cherry).
根据第四段中的“Yeah, it was quite chilly outside, but certainly not enough to wear a jacket.(是的,外面很冷,但肯定没冷到要穿外套的地步)”可知,划线部分意为:没穿外套就出门了。故填Went out without a jacket.
根据第三段中的“Take your jacket. It’s chilly outside(穿上你的外套,外面很冷)”和第五段内容可知,祖母坐同一趟公交车是为了给作者送外套。故填To bring the author the jacket.
根据第五段中的“All the passengers turned their eyes toward me. How could anyone not notice my face go red?(所有乘客都看向我,谁会没注意到我的脸变红了呢)”和第六段中的“I took the jacket embarrassedly.(我尴尬地接过外套)”可知,作者感到尴尬和紧张。故填Embarrassed and nervous.
根据倒数第二段“She never said a word as she stood in front of me, with my jacket hanging on her arm. I took the jacket embarrassedly. Still without a word, my grandmother turned around and got off the bus.(她一言不发地站在我面前,胳膊上搭着我的外套。我尴尬地接过外套。祖母依旧没说一句话,转身下了公交车)”和最后一段的“She never said a word. And when it was time for dessert, there was a cherry on top of my ice cream. All was forgiven.(她一句话也没说。到了吃甜点的时候,我的冰淇淋上依旧放着一颗樱桃。一切都被原谅了)”内容,祖母默默送外套、没有批评作者还依旧给甜点,可知祖母深爱孩子、温柔体贴。故填She is loving and considerate.

Show Love to Our Parents
As a senior student, I try to show my love to parents in small but steady ways. Every evening, I help with housework like tidying the room and washing dishes. On weekends, I often chat with them about my school life, listening patiently to their stories.
These acts make me realize how much they’ve sacrificed for me. Love isn’t about grand gestures but daily care. Let’s start now: do a chore, give a hug, or say “I love you”. Small efforts will warm their hearts deeply.
