Trees are often called the “green guards” of our planet. They do much more than just beautifying the environment. First, trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which keeps the air fresh and healthy for us to breathe. Second, their roots hold the soil together, preventing it from being washed away by heavy rain. This is called soil conservation.
Moreover, trees give us many valuable products. Fruits, nuts, and wood all come from trees. Wood is used to build houses, make furniture, and produce paper. Trees also offer shelter to countless birds and small animals. Without trees, many creatures would lose their homes.
Unfortunately, human activities such as farming, building cities, and illegal logging have caused serious deforestation. Every year, large areas of forests disappear. As a result, problems like floods, sandstorms, and climate change become worse.
To solve this problem, we must take action. Planting new trees, reducing the use of paper, and saying no to products made from illegal wood are effective ways. As the old saying goes, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is today.”

Traditional foods are much more than just meals. They carry the history, customs, and values of a culture. By understanding a region’s traditional dishes, we can learn about its people and their way of life.
Take France as an example. The French are famous for their bread, cheese, and desserts. A typical French breakfast is light — often just a croissant or a piece of bread with butter and jam, served with coffee or hot chocolate. French people take great pride in their food, and cooking is considered an art form.
Italy offers another rich food culture. Pizza and pasta are enjoyed worldwide, but in Italy, they are made with simple, fresh ingredients passed down through generations. Each region has its own special recipes, which reflect local history and geography.
China, with its vast land, has an incredibly diverse food culture. ▲ From the spicy hotpot of Sichuan to the delicate dim sum of Guangdong, every region has something unique. Festivals also come with special foods. For example, dumplings are eaten during the Spring Festival to wish for wealth, while mooncakes celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with family reunion.
Exploring traditional foods not only satisfies our taste buds but also opens a window to different cultures. In today’s globalized world, respecting and enjoying food from different places brings us closer together.

A. Traditional foods are only for special festivals.
B. We should try to eat more of our country’s traditional foods.
C. Trying traditional foods helps us understand other cultures.
D. Globalization has made traditional foods less important.
32. What is the best title for the passage?

Jacky Hunt: Redefining Possibilities
Jacky Hunt, a single-leg woman from Arizona, the United States, has become an inspiration to runners worldwide. On April 28, 2022, she accomplished an extraordinary feat: completing 102 full marathons in 102 days.
The idea of running struck her on January 17. From that day onward, she ran a marathon’s distance every single day—42.195 kilometers. Most of her runs took place on the roads near her Arizona home; on rainy days, she turned to a treadmill (跑步机). On April 18, she finished the world-famous Boston Marathon in 5 hours and 5 minutes.
Born and raised in South Africa, Jacky lost her left leg because of an illness in 2001. For many years, she struggled with unhappiness. It was only five years ago that she discovered running and decided to give it a try. “Running has truly changed my life,” she says. “It has helped me rediscover my sense of purpose. When I run, I feel free—and I love that feeling. I just want to see how far I can push myself.”
Jacky’s husband and two young children encourage her every step of the way. She also shares her running videos online and has gained a huge following on social media.
Running gave Jacky Hunt a new meaning of life, and she firmly believed that disability is not an inability. At the heart of her success lie several key values: perseverance (坚持) without excuse, self-belief against all difficulties, and the courage to redefine (重新定义) what is possible. Jacky Hunt teaches the world that limits exist only in the mind — and with enough heart, even one leg can go farther than two.
40. What record did Jacky Hunt set in 2022?

My friend Tom ________ ________ ________ ________ easily whenever he faced difficulties.
【答案】 ①. used ②. to ③. give ④. up

60. 去年夏天,汤姆决定去一座山里徒步。
Last summer, Tom ________ ________ ________ ________ on a mountain.
【答案】 ①. decided ②. to ③. go ④. hiking

26. The underlined word “conservation” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. the act of protection B. the process of cutting down trees
C. the study of soil D. the movement of water

29. What do French people usually eat for breakfast according to the passage?
A. Pizza and pasta with hot chocolate. B. Dumplings and coffee.
C. A croissant or bread with butter and jam. D. Bread with cheese and desserts.
30. Which sentence can be best put into the blank ▲ in paragraph 4?
A. Most Chinese people eat the same food every day.
B. Different regions in China have different foods.
C. Chinese food is not popular around the world.
D. Cooking Chinese food requires special skills.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Traditional foods are only for special festivals.
B. We should try to eat more of our country’s traditional foods.
C. Trying traditional foods helps us understand other cultures.
D. Globalization has made traditional foods less important.
32. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Cook Traditional French Food B. The History of Pizza and Pasta
C. Why Chinese Food Is the Most Delicious D. A Key to Understanding Cultures
