I have a son with whom I do “special time”. My wife and I homeschool our eleven-year-old son, and I spend lots of time playing and doing things with him. I used to think of this as special time. Recently, however, I have noticed that during many of those hours I have only part of my attention on him and am often distracted by things that need doing. This past year I talked with him about setting aside a time when I would just follow his lead in play, when he would get to decide what happened and how it happened. He liked the idea, so we arranged to do it once a week for an hour, after his guitar lesson.
During the first few special times he wouldn’t be able to think of what he wanted to do with me or how he wanted to use my full attention. I would get antsy and would have to stop myself from making suggestions. He would often say, “Well, what would you like to do?” or “Let’s go do this; you’ll like this.” I started to notice what a struggle it was for him to just want something for himself. He was always considering me first.
Often biting my tongue and sometimes failing, I tried to wait until he could figure out something that he really wanted to do. During some of the first special times he decided to go shopping and just look at the things he wanted. Recently he has chosen to use my attention to perfect skills — we go out and throw a baseball for an hour. Often I have to stop myself from teaching or from asking him to keep trying when he is ready to move on quickly to something else.
As the year continues, I watch my son become more confident and experiment more with how he can use me, now that he knows he has me for a fixed time. If my attention wanders, he’ll remind me that it is his special time.
4. What does the author think is a key feature of “special time”?
A. Adequate time. B. Constant guidance. C. Undivided attention. D. Practical arrangement.
5. What does the underlined word “antsy” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Impatient. B. Ashamed. C. Thrilled. D. Confused.
6. What did the author’s son tend to do during the first few special times?
A. Carry out enjoyable activities. B. Follow the author’s suggestions.
C. Figure out what he wanted to do. D. Consider the author’s preferences.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Learning to Be a Wise Father B. The Magic of Companionship
C. More Than Just Being Together D. The Moment My Boy Found His Voice

Wildfires are not always harmful to forests. In many ecosystems, fire helps remove accumulated debris (堆积的枯落物), returns nutrients to the soil, and supports healthy regeneration. For more than 100 years, the United States has invested billions of dollars in suppressing (压制) wildfires to protect communities, infrastructure, and sensitive landscapes. While this approach has reduced immediate risks, it has also limited the natural fires that forests depend on, increasing the likelihood of larger and more intense fires in the future.
New research shows that nearly 38 million hectares of land in the western United States have burned less often than they historically should have. Researchers describe this widespread shortfall as a “fire deficit”.
“Conditions are getting so warm and dry that it’s causing huge amounts of fire compared to the historical record,” said Winslow Hansen, director of the Western Fire and Forest Resilience Collaborative and scientist at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. “However, we are still observing the tradition of 150 years of fire suppression. Together, drying conditions and overly dense fuels indicate a more challenging and fiery future.”
To identify where fire has been missing, researchers relied on geospatial evidence including soil samples. The data helped establish historical fire return periods, which were then constructed using the Landfire program to compare past fire activity with modern patterns. The researchers found that 74% of the western United States is now in a “fire deficit”.
Closing that gap will require roughly 3.8 million hectares of forest to burn each year for the next decade. Although the scale of needed burning is daunting, Hansen and his co-workers say it can be addressed using a mix of approaches. These include mechanical thinning to remove excess vegetation and leaving some wildfires burning under controlled conditions.
“There are still lots of wildfires that burn today... that are reducing our fuel loads and revitalizing ecosystems,” said Hansen. “Instead of suppressing those fires and putting them out, we’ve got to let them do good ecological work to help us tackle this challenge when risk is low.”
8. What can constantly suppressing wildfires lead to according to paragraph 1?
A. Increased immediate risks. B. Healthier soil regeneration.
C. Naturally stable ecosystems. D. More dangerous future fires.
9. What does the new research find about the western United States?
A. Conditions are getting less warm. B. Fire suppression brings many benefits.
C. Over half of its land is in need of wildfires. D. A century-old tradition is left behind.
10. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 5?
A. Unpredictable. B. Alarming. C. Artificial. D. Inappropriate.
11. What is Hansen’s advice for addressing low-risk wildfires?
A. Take preventive measures. B. Call for joint efforts.
C. Prioritize suppressing them. D. Let nature take its course.
D
At the start of every new year, many of us think about how to make our lives better. Perhaps we want to lose weight or stay off our cell phones. If only we had more willpower, the thinking goes, we could meet our goals. But a new study suggests that we could have that backwards.
In the study, two groups of participants filled out surveys measuring their level of self-control and happiness over time to see if their self-control at one point led to greater well-being later on, and vice versa People in both groups reported on how well they employed strategies like inhibition (e. g., the ability to resist temptations), initiation (e. g., not wasting time before getting to a project), and continuation (e. g., being consistent in their actions) to have better self-control. For well-being measures, researchers asked participants how much they agreed with statements like, “I am happy”, “I appreciate my own self-worth”, and “I am appreciative of life”, or asked them to report on things like how optimistic, energetic, and happy they were.
When looking within individuals over time, the researchers found that a person with greater self-control at one point in time did not report having greater well-being at later points in time. However, people who had greater well-being at one point in time did experience greater self-control later on.
What is the science behind this? Lile Jia, an author of the study, points to Barbara Fredrickson’s “broaden-and-build” theory of positive emotions, which suggests that having positive feelings increases our psychological resources. This means that when feeling good, we can be more creative and open to new experiences, helping us manage difficulties better — including the “work” of stopping ourselves from walking away from our goals.
“When you find yourself struggling to stick to your goals, I would encourage you to resist the urge to label yourself as undisciplined or unworthy. Instead, consider it a signal to check in on your own state of being,” says Jia. “Feeling good is not just the destination. It is a critical part of the journey.”
12. What were the participants asked to do in the study?
A. Recall memorable experiences. B. Report their own state of being.
C. Put forward practical strategies. D. Show gratitude to group members.
13. Why is Barbara Fredrickson’s theory mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To explain why feeling good boosts self-control.
B. To tell the function of psychological resources.
C. To compare factors contributing to fulfilling goals.
D. To prove that self-control leads to ultimate happiness.
14. What does Jia try to do in the last paragraph?
A. Remind us to set realistic goals. B. Urge us to push ourselves harder.
C. Suggest paying attention to our well-being. D. highlight external encouragement.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Greater well-being comes from better self-control.
B. It’s necessary to set goals at the start of every new year.
C. The level of self-control and happiness changes over time.
D. We need well-being more than willpower to reach our goals.

In a world where so much of our communication is quick, instrumental, and screen-based, voice messages are a rebellion (反抗). They’re a choice to be unpolished, to be real, and to invest time in someone else. ____20____ It’s just a friend’s “hi” in your pocket, waiting for you to hit play.
A. In fact, I’m a late adopter of voice messaging.

As a teenager. I often had conflicts with my parents for various reasons. One Saturday night. I wanted to watch a movie with friends and hang out afterward — just us. no parents. However. Mom and Dad had already committed to a family gathering at Aunt Sue’s.
It wasn’t that I hated family events. But when I wanted something really wanted it anything else felt like a prison. At that moment, all I could see was another wasted evening stuck in a house full of relatives while my friends enjoyed their night without me.
In frustration, I yelled and, as usual, told my parents I hated them. Why was this happening to me? All my friends were going out on Saturday. It just wasn’t fair!
I hardly ever felt guilty for being mean to my parents. Sure, they provided me with everything, but that “everything” included unfair rules and constant lectures on my attitude.
Later that night, I overheard my parents talking in the living room. My dad sounded upset and concerned. He was telling my mom about one of his students at the junior high where he teaches. The girl was a student with an amazing personality who always put others’ needs before hers. Her father had been killed in a traffic accident not long ago. Now it was just her and her mother, who were trying to make the best of everything.
For the past week, this girl had not been in school. It turned out her mother had contracted a deadly disease, and there was a good chance she might not survive. I could see tears in my dad’s eyes as well as in my mom’s.

根据第一段“My wife and I homeschool our eleven-year-old son, and I spend lots of time playing and doing things with him. I used to think of this as special time.(我和妻子一起在家教育我们 11 岁的儿子,我会花很多时间陪他玩耍,和他一起做各种事情。我过去一直把这种时光视为特别的相处时刻。)”可知,作者认为“专属时光”的关键特点是不被分散的关注。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“During the first few special times he wouldn’t be able to think of what he wanted to do with me or how he wanted to use my full attention.(在最开始的几次专属时光里,他要么想不出和我一起做什么,要么不知道如何充分利用我全心全意的陪伴。)” 故选A。
根据第二段“He would often say, “Well, what would you like to do?” or “Let’s go do this; you’ll like this.” I started to notice what a struggle it was for him to just want something for himself. 【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是倒数第二段“Often biting my tongue and sometimes failing, I tried to wait until he could figure out something that he really wanted to do. During some of the first special times he decided to go shopping and just look at the things he wanted. Recently he has chosen to use my attention to perfect skills — we go out and throw a baseball for an hour. Often I have to stop myself from teaching or from asking him to keep trying when he is ready to move on quickly to something else.(我常常忍住不说,有时也会忍不住,努力等到他自己想明白到底想做些什么。在最初几次特别的相处时光里,他决定去逛街,只是看看自己想要的东西。最近,他选择借着我的陪伴来打磨技能 —— 我们会出门打了一个小时棒球。当他很快想转向别的事情时,我往往得克制自己不去教他,也不去要求他继续坚持。)”和最后一段“As the year continues, I watch my son become more confident and experiment more with how he can use me, now that he knows he has me for a fixed time. If my attention wanders, he’ll remind me that it is his special time.(随着这一年时光的流逝,我看到儿子变得越来越自信,也更勇于尝试利用我(的陪伴),因为他知道在固定的这段时间里,我是属于他的。如果我的注意力不集中了,他会提醒我,这是他的专属时光。)”可知,本文通过“专属时光”的实践,作者反思了亲子陪伴的本质——真正的陪伴不是物理上的共处,而是全神贯注的关注与尊重孩子的自主性,因此最恰当的标题是C选项“More Than Just Being Together(不仅仅是相伴在一起)”。故选C。

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“While this approach has reduced immediate risks, it has also limited the natural fires that forests depend on, increasing the likelihood of larger and more intense fires in the future.(虽然这种方法降低了当前的火灾风险,但同时也限制了森林所需的自然火灾的发生,从而增加了未来发生更大规模、更猛烈火灾的可能性)”可知,不断压制野火可能会导致未来发生更危险的火灾。
根据第二段“Researchers describe this widespread shortfall as a “fire deficit”.(研究人员将这种普遍存在的不足现象称为“火灾赤字”)”及第四段“The researchers found that 74% of the western United States is now in a “fire deficit”.(研究人员发现,如今美国西部地区有 74%的区域处于“火灾赤字”状态)”可知,新研究发现,美国西部一半以上的地方存在“火灾赤字”情况。
根据最后一段“Instead of suppressing those fires and putting them out, we’ve got to let them do good ecological work to help us tackle this challenge when risk is low.(与其试图扑灭这些火势并将其扑灭,不如让我们允许它们发挥有益的生态作用,在风险较低的时候利用它们来帮助我们应对这一挑战)”可推断,在应对低风险的野火时,Hansen建议顺应自然。故选D。

B 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第二段中的“In the study, two groups of participants filled out surveys measuring their level of self-control and happiness over time to see if their self-control at one point led to greater well-being later on, and vice versa (在这项研究中,两组参与者填写了调查问卷,随着时间的推移测量他们的自控力和幸福感水平,以观察他们在某一时刻的自控力是否会在后来带来更高的幸福感,反之亦然) ”和“For well-being measures, researchers asked participants how much they agreed with statements like, “I am happy”, “I appreciate my own self-worth”, and “I am appreciative of life”, or asked them to report on things like how optimistic, energetic, and happy they were.(在幸福感评估方面,研究人员让参与者对诸如 “我很快乐”“我认可自身价值”“我感恩生活” 等陈述表达认同程度,或者让他们说明自己有多乐观、精力多充沛、心情多愉快) ”可知,参与者被要求填写调查问卷,报告自己的自控力水平、运用自控策略的情况以及幸福感相关的状态。
根据第四段中的“What is the science behind this? Lile Jia, an author of the study, points to Barbara Fredrickson’s ‘broaden-and-build’ theory of positive emotions, which suggests that having positive feelings increases our psychological resources. This means that when feeling good, we can be more creative and open to new experiences, helping us manage difficulties better — including the ‘work’ of stopping ourselves from walking away from our goals 故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“When you find yourself struggling to stick to your goals, I would encourage you to resist the urge to label yourself as undisciplined or unworthy. Instead, consider it a signal to check in on your own state of being (当你发现自己难以坚持目标时,我鼓励你不要急于给自己贴上缺乏自律或不值得的标签。相反,把它看作是检查自己状态的一个信号) ”以及“Feeling good is not just the destination. It is a critical part of the journey (感觉良好不仅仅是目的地。它是旅程中至关重要的一部分) 可知,Jia建议人们在难以坚持目标时,关注自己的状态和幸福感,而非否定自己。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“If only we had more willpower, the thinking goes, we could meet our goals. But a new study suggests that we could have that backwards (人们认为,只要我们有更强的意志力,我们就能实现目标。但一项新的研究表明,我们可能搞反了) ”以及第三段中的“When looking within individuals over time, the researchers found that a person with greater self-control at one point in time did not report having greater well-being at later points in time. However, people who had greater well-being at one point in time did experience greater self-control later on (当长期追踪观察同一个人时,研究人员发现,在某一时刻自控力较强的人,在后来的时刻并没有报告更高的幸福感。然而,在某一时刻幸福感较强的人,后来确实会体验到更强的自控力) ”可知,文章主要讲述一项研究发现幸福感能提升自控力,实现目标更需要幸福感而非意志力。故选D项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
One early morning, as I walked around the block, a friend’s “hi” from my phone nearly stopped me in my tracks. ____16____ She talked me through a life update from the opposite side of the country. It felt like the surprise of an unexpected letter because we normally didn’t communicate that way.
At the time, I only sent voice messages occasionally. Stage fright would kick in. I worried that I’d say the wrong thing, or that others would experience the same cringe (局促不安) upon hearing my voice that I do.____17____
But recently, I’ve found myself recalling how my friend’s voice broke through loneliness.Particularly during a season that’s supposed to be all about love, I think about all the ways that can look-specifically, how we reach out and connect. As I’ve sent more random voice messages to loved ones, it’s become obvious how much I was longing for this point of connection with them. _____18_____There’s a level of closeness that comes with this kind of listening.
____19____ It allows you to take your time and speak without the pressure of an immediate response. You can fill it with laughter, pauses, and tone that a text message can’t convey. It’s a small act of presence, a way to say, “I’m thinking of you, and I want to connect in a way that feels human.”
B. I find comfort in their voices even if I can’t see their faces.
C. It was the first voice message I remember clicking play on.
D. When we reach out, we can better understand others’ difficulties.
E. Sometimes, connection doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful.
F. I think better in writing, I’d tell myself, holding on to my text messages.
G. A voice message is a conscious choice for thoughtful, heartfelt connection.
C 17. F 18. B 19. G 20. E

根据上文“One early morning, as I walked around the block, a friend’s “hi” from my phone nearly stopped me in my tracks. (一天清晨,当我漫步在小区里时,手机传来朋友的“hi”声差点让我停下脚步。)”可知,作者提到了手机里朋友发来的“hi”,空格后描述了这个语音消息的内容和感受。C项“It was the first voice message I remember clicking play on.(这是我记得我点开的第一个语音消息。)”
上文“At the time, I only sent voice messages occasionally. Stage fright would kick in. I worried that I’d say the wrong thing, or that others would experience the same cringe (局促不安) upon hearing my voice that I do. (当时,我只是偶尔会发送语音消息。我会感到紧张不安。我担心自己会说错话,或者别人听到我的声音时会像我一样感到局促不安。)”提到作者过去很少发语音,因为会有“舞台恐惧”,担心说错话或自己的声音让人尴尬。F项“I think better in writing, I’d tell myself, holding on to my text messages. (我告诉自己,我更擅长文字表达,并坚持发文字消息。)”解释了作者之前偏爱文字消息的原因,是对上文stage fright和cringe的进一步说明。故选F项。
【18题详解】
空格位于段落开头。下文提到“There’s a level of closeness that comes with this kind of listening.(这种倾听带来了一种亲近感。)这种closeness是一种慰藉。B项“I find comfort in their voices even if I can’t see their faces. (即使我看不到他们的脸,我也能从他们的声音中找到安慰。)”与下文的“亲近感”逻辑一致,且their voices与段落的“语音消息”主题相符。故选B项。
【19题详解】
空格位于段落开头,应为本段主题句。本段“It allows you to take your time and speak without the pressure of an immediate response. You can fill it with laughter, pauses, and tone that a text message can’t convey. It’s a small act of presence, a way to say, “I’m thinking of you, and I want to connect in a way that feels human.”(它让你有时间说话,而无需承受立即得到回应的压力。你可以用笑声、停顿和语气来填充它,这些都是短信无法传达的。这是一种小小的示好之举,是一种表达“我一直在想着你,我想要以一种人性化的形式与你建立联系”的方式。)”主要描述了语音消息允许使用者从容表达、传递文字无法承载的情感,是“一种用人类方式连接”的选择。G项“A voice message is a conscious choice for thoughtful, heartfelt connection.(语音消息是一种为了体贴、真诚连接而做出的有意选择。)”
上文“In a world where so much of our communication is quick, instrumental, and screen-based, voice messages are a rebellion (反抗). They’re a choice to be unpolished, to be real, and to invest time in someone else. (在这个我们大部分交流都迅速、实用且依赖屏幕的世界里,语音消息是一种反抗的表现。它们是一种选择,即保持不加修饰的状态,保持真实,并花时间去关心他人。)”提到语音消息是对快速、工具化沟通的一种“反抗”,是选择不加修饰、真实并愿意为他人花时间。E项“Sometimes, connection doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful.(有时候,连接不必宏伟,也能有意义。)”是对语音消息这种“微小举动”价值的总结,并与最后一句“It’s just a friend’s “hi” in your pocket, waiting for you to hit play. (它只是你口袋里的一句朋友的“hi”,等待着你点击播放。)”形成完美呼应。故选E项。

Labor Shapes Us
Good morning, friends. It’s my honor to share my voluntary experience in our school canteen last week.
I assisted the staff by sorting vegetables, washing dishes and wiping tables neatly before meals. Though the repetitive work exhausted me at first, seeing the tidy canteen filled me with a strong sense of achievement. During the work, I witnessed the chefs’ sweat and hard work. They silently provide delicious meals for us daily, making me realize labor is never minor. It connects people, sustains our life, and teaches me to cherish food and respect every worker.
This experience deeply shaped me. Labor exercises our bodies and fosters gratitude and responsibility. Let’s actively participate in labor, value its fruits, and become responsible individuals. Thank you!

I was deeply shocked by this girl’s misfortune. I couldn’t believe someone so kind had suffered so much pain. Compared with her, my little disappointment seemed totally insignificant. I had a warm family and healthy parents who loved me deeply, yet I was always selfish and rude, complaining about trivial things and even saying hurtful words to them. Hearing her story made me rethink my attitude towards life. A wave of guilt washed over me, and my eyes grew wet. I realized how lucky I actually was.
With a heavy heart, I walked into the living room and hugged both my parents. I apologized sincerely for my bad temper and impolite words earlier. I told them I would go to the family gathering happily. My parents were surprised but smiled warmly. Their warm embrace made me feel even more grateful for what I had. That night, I reflected a lot. From then on, I learned to be grateful and tried to understand my parents. I no longer lost my temper easily, and our relationship became much closer.
