Have you ever wondered how birds find their way during long migrations (迁徙)? Some birds travel thousands of kilometers every year, flying from one part of the world to another. How do they know where to go?
Scientists have discovered that birds use several different methods to navigate (导航). One method is using the sun and stars as compasses (指南针). Birds can tell the direction of the sun and stars, even on cloudy days. They also have a built-in "clock" that helps them know the time of day, so they can adjust (调整) their direction based on the sun’s position.
Another method is using the Earth’s magnetic field. Birds have very small pieces of iron (铁) in their beaks (喙) that act like a compass, helping them sense the Earth’s magnetic field (地球磁场). This allows them to know which direction is north, even when there are no stars or sun visible.
Some birds also use landmarks to find their way. They remember mountains, rivers, and coastlines, and use them as guides. For example, some birds follow the coast when they migrate, using the ocean as a landmark.
Scientists are still learning about how birds navigate, but one thing is clear: birds have amazing abilities that help them travel long distances safely.
16.How do birds use the sun and stars to navigate?
A.They use them to tell the time of day.
B.They use them as compasses.
C.They use them to find food.
D.They use them to communicate with other birds.
17.What do birds have in their beaks that help them navigate?
A.Tiny particles of iron. B.Tiny cameras.
C.Tiny microphones. D.Tiny computers.
18.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Birds are beautiful animals.
B.Birds use several methods to navigate during migrations.
C.Scientists are still learning about birds.
D.Birds migrate long distances every year.

16-year-old Harry Moore writes about his hobby, tennis.
My parents have always loved tennis and they’re members of a tennis club. My older brother was really good at it and they supported him— taking him to lessons all the time. So I guess when I announced that I wanted to be a tennis champion when I grew up I just intended for them to notice me. My mother laughed. She knew I couldn’t possibly be serious, I was just a 4-year-old kid!
Later, I joined the club’s junior coaching group and finally took part in my first proper contest (比赛), confident that my team would do well. We won, which was fantastic, but I wasn’t so successful. I didn’t even want to be in the team photo because I didn’t feel I deserved (应得的) to be. When my coach asked what happened in my final match, I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t believe I’d lost – I knew I was the better player. But every time I attacked, the other player defended (防守) brilliantly. I couldn’t explain the result.
After that, I decided to listen more carefully to my coach because he had lots of tips. I realized that you need the right attitude (态度) to be a winner. On court I have a plan but sometimes the other guy will do something unexpected so I’ll change it. If I lose a point, I do my best to forget it and find a way to win the next one.
At tournaments, it’s impossible to avoid players who explode in anger. Lots of players can be negative—including myself sometimes. Once I got so angry that I nearly broke my racket! But my coach has helped me develop ways to control those feelings. After all, the judges have a hard job and you just have to accept their decisions.
My coach demands that I train in the gym to make sure I’m strong right to the end of a tournament. I’m getting good results: my shots are more accurate and I’m beginning to realize that with hard work there’s a chance that I could be a champion one day.
19.What did Harry do after he lost his first contest?
A.He quit the team. B.He broke his racket.
C.He blamed the judges. D.He listened more to his coach.
20.What does Harry try to remember when he’s on the court?
A.Try to follow your game plan. B.Be sure to respect the other player.
C.Don’t care too much about your mistakes. D.Don’t let the other player surprise you.
21.What is the main lesson Harry learned?
A.Talent matters most. B.Prove yourself by winning.
C.Attitude and hard work are key. D.Family are always by your side.
22.What may a sports reporter write about Harry now?
A.Harry needs to believe in his own abilities and stop depending on good luck when he plays.
B.Harry has really grown up since his first tournament and discovered that tennis is a battle of minds not just rackets.
C.Harry looked exhausted when he finished his last match so maybe he should think about working out.
D.Harry could be a great player but he needs to find a coach to take him all the way to the big competitions.

“TOM!” No answer.
“TOM!” Still no answer.
The old lady pulled her glasses down and looked over them about the room; then she put them up and looked out under them. She seldom or never looked through them for so small a thing as a boy. They were her best glasses for show, not for seeing things clearly. She looked confused for a moment, and then said, not angrily, but still loud enough for anyone in the room to hear: “Well, if I catch you, I’ll—”
She did not finish, for by this time she was searching under the bed with the broom (扫把). Unfortunately, the old lady saw nothing but the cat.
She went to the open door and looked out among the tomato plants and grass that were all over the garden. No Tom. So she raised her voice and shouted: “Y-o-u-u Tom!”
There was a small noise behind her and she turned around quickly just in time to see the boy and caught him by his jacket.
“There! I should have thought of that locker. What are you doing there?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth! I know it’s jam—that’s what it is.
Forty times I’ve told you not to eat any more jam. It is not healthy! Now hand me that jam and promise never to eat it again!”
“Careful! Look behind you, aunt!”
The old lady turned around quickly to see what was there. At once, Tom climbed over the tall wooden wall and disappeared. The old lady stood there surprised for a little while, and then started laughing gently.
“…” said the old lady, shaking her head resignedly (无奈地).

When I was thirteen years old, I went to a new school. It was my 66 (two) week at the new school. No one knew me yet. I was very lonely 67 afraid to make friends with anyone. The reason was that I was not good at 68 (communicate) with others. Every time I heard other students talking and laughing, I felt even more lonely.
One day, a girl entered the classroom. She looked 69 me and, without a word, smiled. 70 (she) smile made me feel happy, lively and warm. It was like 71 hidden treasure. That smile changed my life. I started to talk with the other students. Day by day, I learnt to trust people and often 72 (offer) help to them.
And they included me in their circle of 73 (member). From then on, I made more friends 74 (quick). The girl with the bright smile has become my 75 (good) friend now.
The girl gave me an important gift. It was a smile. I believe that if you smile at the world, it will smile back.

【答案】One Possible Version:
Hello, everyone! I’m Li Hua. It’s a great honor to stand here and share my views on protecting the environment. The environment is important to all living things. A good environment keeps us healthy and makes our life more beautiful. However, we are facing many environmental problems now. Rubbish is everywhere, and air and water pollution are becoming serious.
As middle school students, we can do something to make a difference. We can save water and paper in daily life. We should also walk or ride bikes to school instead of taking cars. Besides, we’d better sort rubbish and plant more trees.
Let’s take action right now. Small actions can make a big difference to our earth!
Thank you for listening!
