When I got my first research project to work, I was so excited. Seeing research in action was enjoyable. My excitement, though, was soon cut short when my professor asked me to write a research paper on the project. My body tensed. Writing was the last thing I wanted to do; it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place.
I had hated writing since I was a little boy. But I couldn’t avoid it: writing classes were required in high school. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganised thoughts into fluent sentences. My teachers would return my papers littered with red, showing my paragraphs were out of order. I was frustrated to no end. How could I know what was good if there was no objectively right answer? Maybe I wasn’t cut out for writing.
I studied engineering in college. A few years later, I joined a research lab. The professor assigned me an initial project to improve the efficiency of an inductor (电路感应器). I spent weeks setting up a test for a new design. When I got the results, though, the numbers weren’t good. I kept trying new designs, using the results to brainstorm ideas with a team of researchers. Finally, after dozens of designs, we had one that could work. I was overjoyed — until my professor told me to write that research paper.
In panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper full of red marks. Before I could quit in defeat, though, the graduate student explained, “Red doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times.” Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was designing my research project?” I kept improving my outline, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback from others. Finally, I made it, and surprisingly, I was having fun.
From then on, writing became one of my favourite parts of research, and it still is today. It’s a future I never could have imagined during my early struggles with writing classes. But I came around.
24. What was the author’s initial reaction when asked to write a research paper?
A. He felt excited and motivated. B. He was nervous and reluctant.
C. He decided to change his research topic. D. He immediately sought help from classmates.
25. What do we know about the author’s final research design from paragraph 3?
A. It’s hard-earned. B. It’s well-known.
C. It’s poorly-made. D. It’s independently-finished.
26. Which of the following word can replace the underlined phrase “cut out”?
A. Grateful. B. Born. C. Responsible. D. Famous.
27.What did the author learn from the graduate student’s words?
A. A good beginning is half done. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. A bad workman always blames his tools. D. Trial and error opens the door to progress.

Imagine you are playing in a tennis match, and your performance will determine your team’s success. Your heart races and your skin is damp with sweat — all common signs of anxiety.
However, the human body’s consistent response to anxiety actually masks two different psychological phenomena. The first — “growth anxiety” — occurs in response to challenges that are uncomfortable but manageable. The second — “toxic anxiety” — arises from situations that are beyond one’s ability to cope with. Toxic anxiety can be harmful to both body and mind, while growth anxiety can promote health and resilience, much in the way that exercise can make us fitter.
In general, one’s performance under pressure follows an inverted-U curve (倒“U” 曲线). As stress goes up, performance rises to a peak, and then drops off. This relationship, called the Yerkes-Dodson Law, was first described in 1908. Since then, dozens of studies have shown that there is an optimum level of stress that can produce the best performance, which is the sweet spot of anxiety.
Growth anxiety can improve resilience in both mind and body. That’s likely because sudden anxiety leads to a short-term increase in two stress hormones (激素): cortisol (皮质醇) and norepinephrine (去甲肾上腺素). Cortisol prompts the body to release glucose (葡萄糖) to fuel the body and boost immune function. Additionally, brief exposure to cortisol can enhance brain’s capabilities in memory and learning. Meanwhile, norepinephrine increases your heart rate and blood pressure, preparing you for fight or flight, and helps you stay focused. Although a racing heart is uncomfortable at the moment, it can be beneficial as long as it doesn’t last too long.
Everyone has a different sensitivity to stress. The same challenge could be terrifying for one person but exciting for another. But regardless of your stress tolerance, even small actions — like getting sufficient sleep and exercise — can help prevent you from sliding down the inverted-U curve. We shouldn’t fear growth anxiety any more than we do the muscle ache from a healthy workout. Both can be uncomfortable but make us stronger in the long run.
28. What can we know about “growth anxiety” from the passage?
A. It can do harm to our body and mind.
B. It can promote resilience only in mind.
C. It occurs when we face controllable challenges.
D. It arises when we can’t deal with some situations.
29. According to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, what happens to performance as stress increases?
A. Performance decreases steadily.
B. Performance remains unchanged.
C. Performance improves continuously.
D. Performance first rises to a peak and then declines.
30. How does cortisol help the body during growth anxiety?
A. It slows the heart rate.
B. It reduces blood pressure.
C. It releases glucose for energy.
D. It makes the body feel relaxed and sleepy.
31.What suggestion does the text give to manage stress effectively?
A. Tolerating the stress.
B. Ignoring physical signs of anxiety.
C. Getting enough sleep and exercise.
D. Avoiding all challenging situations.

Painting rooftops white or covering them with a reflective coating is the most effective method of keeping the air temperature down in a city like London during a heatwave. These “cool roofs” should perform better than solar panels, green roofs or adding more trees at ground level.
Oscar Brousse at University College London and his colleagues ran climate simulations (模拟) to see how London’s temperature during the two hottest days of summer in 2018 would have changed if the city had made widespread use of cooling measures, from cool roofs to air conditioning, along with solar panels, which have a cooling effect. Temperatures that summer peaked at 35.6℃ .
Cool roofs outperformed all the other interventions, the team found, lowering average outdoor temperatures in the city over the two-day period by l.2℃, and by as much as 2℃ in certain locations with
roofs painted white. By comparison, additional tree cover only curbed air temperatures by about 0.3℃, while solar panels cut them by 0.5℃ .
The study also found that widespread use of air conditioning might keep internal temperatures cool, but would boost outdoor air temperatures by up to l℃ in parts of central London. “For London, what worked the most for reducing outdoor temperatures at a pedestrian level was the cool roofs,” says Brousse.
Although the study uses only two days of data for the simulations, Brousse says it is broadly in line with similar published research.
Placing reflective coatings or lightening roof surfaces across London would be a relatively easy and low-cost climate adaptation, he says. “I see barely any reason not to start doing it wisely.”
There are reasons beyond cooling to apply other technologies too, though, he says. Trees and green roofs can boost biodiversity and resident well-being, for example, while solar panels provide clean power.
A 2023 report by the Greater London Authority suggested that cool roofs may become an increasing policy focus for city officials as summer temperatures rise because of climate change. “With temperatures in London projected to increase, and with more occurrences of heatwaves, reflective roofs are likely to be a key component of climate adaptation strategy,” the report says.
32. Which is the best way to cool the temperature in the city during the hottest days?
A. Cool roofs. B. Air conditioning. C. Solar panels. D. More trees.
33. What does the underlined word “curb” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Add. B. Decrease. C. Increase. D. Remove.
34. What is the feature of cool roofs?
A. They are cost-efficient. B. They can boost biodiversity.
C. They can produce clean energy. D. They can completely lower the temperatures.
35. Which word can best describe the future of cool roofs in London?
A. Uncertain. B. Limited. C. Promising. D. Hopeless.

Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance solo. When she started dance classes last year, she didn’t know about the solo. She heard people talk about it but didn’t know what it was. The solo was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance that students danced. It was held at the high school every year, and Sophie was going to dance on stage in front of everyone. She disliked the thought of that as it scared her, and she didn’t know how to deal with it.
Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on stage. There were only a few moms watching, so it wasn’t too bad. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people tonight was really scary.
“Ready to go?” Mom asked. “Yes. I guess so,” answered Sophie. But Mom noticed the nervousness in Sophie’s voice and asked what was wrong. Sophie said, “I don’t know, not feeling good and kind of afraid.” Mom then sat on the edge of Sophie’s bed and reminded her of yesterday’s practice when she was in the front row and Sophie did just fine. Sophie worried that there would be so many people today. Mom told her that when she went on stage, she should look right where Mom was sitting yesterday as Mom would be in the same seat, and it would be just like yesterday. Sophie nodded hesitantly, then got up and prepared to set off.
Sophie thought about her mom’s words all the way to the high school. Mom was always right, but Sophie wasn’t sure about it this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of all those people.
When it was her turn to dance, Sophie thought about what Mom had told her.
Sophie ran happily to Mom in the hall of the school.

The Art of Paper-Cutting
Chinese paper-cutting, a delicate traditional craft, involves creating vivid designs by cutting
red paper with scissors or knives. Often used during festivals or at the wedding, it symbolizes
good luck and happiness. Take “ 双 喜 ”(double happiness) for example, its symmetrical form
reflects the Confucian ideal of harmony.
I highly recommend paper-cutting for its cultural significance and accessibility. Mastering
basic techniques is simple, yet the creativity it fosters is limitless. Additionally, paper-cutting
serves as a bridge between Chinese folk arts and aesthetics. Finally, through this art form, students
can also appreciate the harmony between patience, precision, and artistic expression.

When it was her turn to dance, Sophie thought about what Mom had told her. She took a
deep breath, stepped onto the stage, and looked straight at the front row where Mom sat. As the
music started, she blocked out the rest of the audience and focused only on that one spot. At first,
her legs trembled a little, but as she moved to the rhythm, memories of yesterday’s smooth
practice came back. Slowly, she relaxed and let the dance take over. By the end, she was
completely lost in the joy of dancing. The applause that followed made her heart swell with
pride.
Sophie ran happily to Mom in the hall of the school. “Mom! I did it!” she shouted, jumping
up and down with excitement. Mom opened her arms and gave her a big hug, saying, “I knew you
could! You were amazing out there!” Sophie beamed and said, “It was all because of your advice.
Looking at you made me feel like I was just dancing for one person, not the whole crowd.” Momgently stroked her hair and replied, “You’ve just overcome your biggest fear, and I’m so proud of
you.” Holding Mom’s hand tightly, Sophie couldn’t wait for the next dance performance.

Text 10 墨尔本研学旅行 165
OK. Now, let’s briefly review what we have done in the past few days. We set off on Monday morning and arrived in Melbourne after a two-hour bus ride. (19) We started with a guided tour of Eureka Tower. (17) After lunch, we walked along Collins Street, taking in the view of Town Hall. We then took a walk through Chinatown to the State Library. Unexpectedly, we also met Markus Zusak, the author of The Book Thief, at the library. (18) On Tuesday morning, we enjoyed the beauty of the Botanical Gardens, followed by a tour of the Victorian Parliament House in the afternoon. Today is Wednesday. We spent most of the morning on Swanston Street studying the historic architecture. Now, we’ve finished lunch. It’s time to head back to school (19) (20) and you can enjoy the views through the bus windows on the way. A big thank-you to my fellow teachers and parent volunteers for your wonderful help. The students had a great time and learned a lot.
