Math is the study of numbers and how they relate to each other and the world. We need math for many things–for science, for building everything from houses to bridges, and for powering the computers and smartphones we use in our everyday lives.
Numbers are everywhere in nature. Let’s explore two examples. A honeycomb is made up of hexagons. The six-sided shapes can fit together perfectly, allowing bees to save space and materials. Another example is the sunflower. Its seeds grow in special patterns. If you count them, you will often find numbers like 21, 34 or 55, where each new number is the sum (总和) of the two before it. This allows the sunflower to grow the most seeds in its center.
The first people to count almost certainly used their hands and ten fingers to help, like children today. As a result, our modern counting system is based on tens.
Nine Chapters is a famous ancient Chinese mathematics book. It was written about 2,000 years ago. This book is like a practical guidebook. It collects 246 problems on topics like farming, trade, and engineering. This book was a key math textbook in Asia for centuries.
21. Why does the writer give examples of the things that need math in everyday life?
A. To show how important math is.
B. To show how interesting math is.
C. To show how difficult math is in daily life.
22. Why do we count in groups of ten according to the passage?
A. Because it is easier to write. B. Because ten is common in life. C. Because people have ten fingers.
23. Which of the following is the right picture of a hexagon?
A. B. C.
24. What question is NOT answered in the passage?
A. Who wrote “Nine Chapters”?
B. Why do the sunflower seeds grow in a special pattern?
C. How many problems does “Nine Chapters” collect?
25. Where do you probably find the passage?
A. A website about nature. B. A magazine about science. C. A guidebook about culture.
21. A 22. C 23. B 24. A 25. B

根据“Counting in ten”部分中“The first people to count almost certainly used their hands and ten fingers to help, like children today. As a result, our modern counting system is based on tens.”
根据“Numbers in nature”部分中“A honeycomb is made up of hexagons. The six-sided shapes can fit together perfectly, allowing bees to save space and materials. ”可知,hexagon(六边形)由six-sided shapes描述,对比三个图形选项,B选项是六边形。
【24题详解】
根据“Mathatics in ancient China”部分中“ It was written about 2,000 years ago.”可知,文中未提及《九章算术》的作者;根据“Numbers in nature”部分中“ Its seeds grow in special patterns...This allows the sunflower to grow the most seeds in its center.”可知,解释了向日葵种子特殊排列的原因;根据“Mathatics in ancient China”部分中“It collects 246 problems on topics like farming, trade, and engineering. ”可知《九章算术》收集的问题数量。
【25题详解】
文章介绍了数学在自然界中的应用(蜂巢、向日葵)、计数方法及中国古代数学成就,涵盖了科学、文化等领域,最可能出现在科学杂志中。

For many foreigners, Chinese characters may seem like a mix of lines without any rules. But to Lena, a 20-year-old girl from Northern Virginia, US, each one tells its own story. In her eyes, the character “kan (侃)” looks like a singing jellyfish, and the traditional form of “wu (無)” lets her think of a sheep. What’s more, the simple form of character “wu (吴)” reminds her of a famous pop star, Michael Jackson. She drew it as if Michael were dancing. She posted it on a Chinese social media platform. To her surprise, many loved it. Then, she tried to draw them as she saw them.
Lena noticed that many Chinese characters “stood out as looking like different objects”. Now, thanks to Lena’s drawings, more people are thinking about language, art and cultural exchange.
Some people think that Lena seems to understand the beauty of Chinese characters even better than many Chinese people. “It’s because you all are used to seeing the characters,” said Lena. She said that if you change to the opposite, it is also true. For example, she learned from her Chinese friends that the letters “orz” in English together look like a person who gets down on his knee to say sorry.
Lena’s story shows that language is more than just words. She also encourages Chinese learners to talk with native speakers. “It’s more fun if you are teaching them your language and they’re teaching you theirs at the same time because then it’s more of a cultural exchange.”
26. What are Chinese characters like for Lena?
A. Cute animals. B. Different objects. C. A mix of lines without rules.
27. What does Lena describe “wu” (吴) according to the passage?
A. B. C.
28. Why does the writer give the example of “orz”?
A. To tell learning a new language is not easy.
B. To encourage us to learn more about Chinese characters.
C. To show Chinese people can also understand the beauty of English letters.
29. What is Lena like according to the passage?
A. She is proud of her invention.
B. She gets used to Chinese characters.
C. She is good at learning a new language.
30. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Learning a Language in Fun Ways.
B. Happy Culture Exchange.
C. The Challenges of Learning Chinese.
26. B 27. A 28. C 29. C 30. A
第一段指出“But to Lena, a 20-year-old girl from Northern Virginia, US, each one tells its own story”,Lena认为每个汉字都在讲述自己的故事;第二段进一步说明“Lena noticed that many Chinese characters ‘stood out as looking like different objects’”,Lena注意到许多汉字“看起来像不同的物体”;这说明对Lena而言,汉字像是不同的物体。
第一段描述“the simple form of character ‘wu’ (吴) reminds her of a famous pop star, Michael Jackson. She drew it as if Michael were dancing”,简体字“吴”让她想起流行巨星迈克尔·杰克逊,她画的“吴”就像迈克尔在跳舞;图片A显示的是跳舞的人物形象,与描述相符。
第三段说明Lena的观点“It’s because you all are used to seeing the characters”,中国人习惯了看汉字,所以不太会联想;她举例“she learned from her Chinese friends that the letters ‘orz’ in English together look like a person who gets down on his knee to say sorry”,她从中国朋友那里学到英文字母“orz”看起来像一个人跪下道歉;这个例子是用来说明中国人也能理解英文字母的形象美,即反过来也是成立的。
最后一段指出“She also encourages Chinese learners to talk with native speakers. ‘It’s more fun if you are teaching them your language and they’re teaching you theirs at the same time’”,Lena鼓励中文学习者与母语者交流,认为互相教语言是一种文化交流;这说明Lena擅长学习新语言(能从不同角度理解汉字,还能用绘画表达,并鼓励语言交流)。

根据文段d:“The three suffered seasickness and storms, while raising 700,000 pounds for providing people in Africa with clean water.”

If you look up in a forest, you may notice something really interesting: the tops of trees don’t actually touch each other. There is a little space between them, and you can even see the sky through these breaks. This is called “crown (树冠) shyness”.
Meg Lowman, a tree expert, explains that it’s a very wise way for trees to stay healthy. Trees are always competing for sunlight and water. With more space, trees can grow bigger and stronger. By keeping a certain distance from each other, they also lower the chance of losing leaves and flowers when they brush against neighbouring trees in the wind. Leaves help trees get sunlight while flowers develop into fruits. Also, just like we stay away from sick people, trees keep their leaves from touching other trees. This helps stop harmful (有害的) insects and illness from spreading.
“Nature is connected closely with human beings,” Lowman says. Forests help clean the air we breathe. Healthy trees offer us cool places in summer and clean water better. They also provide homes for so many amazing animals and plants. “The healthier the forest is, the more benefits the owner will get,” he says. “When a tree gets sick, don’t just cut it down. Trees support many living things like insects and birds. That’s how they keep the balance,” the expert adds.
Trees know that being good neighbors helps everyone stay healthy and strong—that’s a great lesson for us too! Just like trees need their space, keeping a private space from others is also important for us. So next time you see trees, remember they touch us to be good neighbors.

Rubbish can be seen everywhere even on the highest mountain in the world! Sherpas (夏尔巴人) working on Mount Qomolangma have to go on a four-hour hike across dangerous broken ice to bring rubbish back to the base camp.
Now during the climbing season, they have new help from two drones produced by a Chinese company. They can complete the same journey only in six minutes.
Drones have been used to transport rubbish from Mount Qomolangma Camp 1, which sits at 6,065 meters above sea level, down to the base camp, about 700 meters below. A drone transports things like ropes up the peak. After that, Sherpas hook (钩) a rubbish-filled bag on the drone. Then the drone takes the rubbish back to the base camp. Between mid-April and mid-May this year, the drones dealt with more than 280 kilograms of rubbish. Using robots can help not only speed up the process but also reduce the danger for the Sherpas who carry rubbish down the mountain.
Mount Qomolangma has seen more and more rubbish since the 1990s. The problem is worse at higher campsites, which are also more challenging to clean. Since 2019, the Nepalese (尼泊尔) government and Sherpas have worked together to clean more than 100 tons of waste. In the last ten years, the government has also made rules that require climbers who go above the base camp to carry back at least 8 kilograms of rubbish each, or they will be fined up to $4,000.
56. Who produced the two drones?
___________________________________________________________
57. How long does it take a drone to complete the same journey that Sherpas do?
