My family lives in a small apartment. We do not have a backyard, but we love plants. One day, Mom and I decided to make a window box herb garden.
First, we went to the library to read about how to grow herbs in window boxes. Then we went to the gardening store and bought a long window box with a long “dish” that fits under it, some soil, and packets of seeds. Then we went for a “coffee talk” at a coffee shop and talked about what delicious meals we would make with our herbs.
At home, we put some small stones at the bottom of the box. The stones help the water move out of the soil and into the dish below. If the water can’t get out, the soil stays too wet and the herbs won’t grow well.
Mom and I both love pizza, so we made sure to plant a lot of basil. I love the smell of fresh basil! We also planted rosemary, which tastes good with roast lamb That smells wonderful, too. We planted mint because Mom wanted to try making fresh mint tea.
We placed the window box on top of the fridge and waited for the seeds to grow. Then we put the box on the shelf outside the kitchen window to get sunlight. My mom and I love to smell our fresh herbs. Now, every time I look out of the window or help mom cook, I see our little garden growing. It reminds me that you don’t need a big yard to enjoy nature—Sometimes, all you need is a little soil, some seeds, and a heart full of hope.
4. What did they buy at the gardening store?
A. Books on growing plants. B. A box, soil, and seeds.
C. Coffee and some cakes. D. Pizza and some roast lamb
5. Which is the correct order of the steps they took?
① Put stones in the box. ② Went to the library.
③ Planted the herbs. ④ Bought things from the store.
A. ②-④-①-③ B. ④-②-③-① C. ②-①-④-③ D. ①-②-③-④
6. What does “a heart full of hope” suggest in the last sentence?
A. Being wealthy and rich. B. Feeling positive about life.
C. Knowing all about gardening. D. Having a large and warm family.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The smell of different fresh plants. B. The use of herbs for cooking meals.
C. The making of a window box garden. D. The life of living in a small apartment.

You can put a stamp on it, you can write an address on it, and you can send it through the mail. No, it’s not a package (包裹). It’s the amazing coconut (椰子)! The coconut is different from most other fruits because every part of it is useful. People have been using coconuts in many different ways. Here are some of them.
One exciting use of the coconut is as a kind of energy. Scientists are working on using coconuts for energy because they are cheap and clean. Coconut oil has already been made into fuel (燃料). It can power cars, trucks, ships and many more.
Students at Baylor University find that coconut husks (外壳) can take in water very well. So mixing coconut husks with dry soil (土壤) helps the soil to hold onto more of the water. The students also find that coconut husks can take the place of plastic in some cases. If this is possible, it will help people use less plastic.
The husk of the coconut is a perfect package. It protects the coconut from harm. That’s why some countries allow people to send the coconut without any packaging. Each year, tourists post about 3,000 of these “coconut postcards”.
Coconuts grow naturally in over 80 countries of the world. They require only sun and proper rain. No special care is needed. Every year, more than 61 million tons of coconuts are produced. It is not surprising, then, that people want to find so many uses for the coconut.
8. Why is the coconut different from most other fruits?
A. Stamps can be put on it. B. Every part of it is useful.
C. People send it in a package. D. Addresses can be written on it.
9. What does the underlined word “power” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Make room for. B. Add value to. C. Provide energy for. D. Put weight on.
10. In which part of the magazine could we read the passage?
A. Story Time. B. History World. C. Sports News. D. Amazing Nature.
11. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Is AI bad for new music?
HEAD TO HEAD
The world’s oldest known musical instruments are more than 40,000 years old. For tens of thousands of years, humans have been making music for pleasure and to express themselves. Recently, there has been a rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create music. Some AI music has become so popular online. The technology has been used by lots of musicians. Some people think that using AI to produce music isn’t creative enough because it just makes songs out of old music. What do you think? Is AI bad for new music?
Yes—AI music is not creative, says Peter
Using AI might be cheaper than paying a musician. If companies can use AI to produce popular music that makes lots of money from people buying and listening to it, it could put musicians like me out of work. If musicians can’t earn money from music, there will be far fewer of them creating new songs. Anyway, listening to music that was made by a computer isn’t the same experience as listening to human-made music.
When I create songs, I put different feelings and real experiences into my work, creating songs that connect with people at a deep level. Songs produced by AI aren’t original because the computer just makes music from the old one. AI music isn’t completely creative.
No—AI can produce new ideas, says Mary
I’m a music lover. When I turn on my radio or headphones and a great new song comes on, it makes me feel good. Wonderful music brings people together to sing and dance. If people are enjoying music, does it matter whether it was made by a human or a machine?
I think music makers can use computers, which help to perfect sound and mix different layers of a song. For them, AI is just another new technology, a tool that they can use to express ideas. It won’t replace musicians but they can work with it. Building on AI music could save them time. It could allow much more music to be produced and it could lead to new and special styles of music. AI could create exciting music that humans could never have dreamed of.
Now that you’ve read a bit more about it, tell us what you think at theweekjunior.co.uk. We’ll publish the result next week.
12. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To suggest what humans can do with the help of AI.
B. To show how AI helps musicians produce new ideas.
C. To share ideas on whether AI is suitable for new music.
D. To explain the reasons why more people like AI music.
13. Which of the following does Mary most probably agree with?
A. AI helps musicians make more money.
B. AI music will take the place of musicians.
C. Human-made music is better than AI music.
D. AI is a new tool to help musicians express ideas.
14. What does the underlined word “original” mean?
A. New and interesting. B. Similar and real. C. Private and popular. D. Usual and exciting.
15. Which section is most likely to be part of the magazine next week?
A. B. C. D.

When were restaurants invented? Do you know about that? Actually, the first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. People didn’t order food from a menu. Everyone used to share the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn’t have to store food at home if they ate at these restaurants.
Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. All of these people had to eat. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the Imperial Way, a very big street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn’t have to eat the same food as everyone else.
For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food on the street or at inns—small hotels. Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to restaurants we know today. There was a bigger variety of food, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, trains made travel much faster and simpler. In the end, this kind of restaurant began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.
Now restaurants are here and there. You can buy a variety of different kinds of food. You can ask someone to send food to your door. But remember it wasn’t always like that.
41. ________ ________, the first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. But they were different from restaurants today.
42. Later, restaurants began to open in China. Restaurants in Hangzhou provided a ________ ________ people.
43. Food could ________ ________ on the street or at inns—small hotels.
44. In the early 1100s, how many people lived in Hangzhou?

45. What do you think the future restaurants will be like?

根据第一段最后一句“It reminds us that we all need to care for ourselves and learn to love ourselves more.”

根据第二段提到“Many people put things off because they’re afraid of making mistakes. They believe they must do everything perfectly.”说明很多人因为害怕犯错而追求完美、不敢开始;后文“Start small and learn as you go.”
根据第三段提到“Real rest is not just sleeping all day or staying up late on your phone.”

“an ancient Chinese art”和“over 2,000 years of history”之间是伴随关系,表示皮影戏具有2000多年的历史,with“具有,带有”符合语境。in“在……
前文提到“Grandpa held thin sticks connected to the puppets”,可知是通过移动这些棍子来让木偶移动,sticks“棍子”符合。
my“我的”、her“她的”、your“你的”均不符合语境。
give in“屈服”、give out“分发;发出”、give away“赠送;泄露”均不符合语境。
