Along a 3-kilometer stretch of the river Rwizi, environment protection officers recently planted new bamboo seedlings (幼苗) and cleared room for last year’s survivors to grow. The river Rwizi is the most important river in western Uganda that includes the major city of Mbarara. A successful bamboo forest would protect the river against sand miners, farmers and others whose activities have long threatened it. “Once bamboo is established, it is almost like a net,” said Jeconious Musingwire. He is an environment officer, who is the project’s technical advisor. “The roots trap everything, including the surface runoff, and stabilize the weaknesses of the banks.” The Ugandan government has set a 10-year policy that calls for planting 300,000 hectares of bamboo. Most of it will be planted on private land by 2029 as part of wider reforestation efforts. A single bamboo pole brings in a little less than a dollar, so farmers need to grow a lot to earn enough. Bamboo promoters are urging them to see a bamboo plantation as the same kind of money-making crop as coffee or tea. Banks are offering bamboo “plantation capital” to clients, loans that allow them to plant large forests of bamboo. Bamboo plants are normally ready for harvesting in three to five years. A well-maintained plantation can be useful for at least 50 years, said Jacob, a crop production expert working with the large Kitara Farm. He said bamboo is easy to manage, and usually does not need spraying with pesticide (杀虫剂). Steve Tusiime owns a bamboo nursery. It has sold fewer than 10,000 seedlings in the past two years. But, Tusiime said, “Bamboo is going to be a game changer in Africa. You can eat bamboo, you can use it to build, create a bamboo industry, you can feed it to your animals, and it can take care of your land.” 8. What is the importance of planting bamboo according to Jeconious Musingwire? A. It helps improve the soil for crops. B. It is beneficial to the environment. C. It can be profitable for about 50 years. D. It is useful to develop the local economy. 9. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. People in Uganda are showing interest in growing bamboo. B. Steve Tusiime makes much money with the bamboo nursery in growing bamboo. C. Bamboo industry will help people in Uganda make more money. D. Bamboo is helpful to reduce poverty and hunger in Africa. 10. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Bamboo forests can improve the environment B. Farmers can earn money by planting bamboo C. Uganda makes a 10-year plan on development D. Uganda makes great effort to plant bamboo 11. What is the author’s attitude towards the development of bamboo farming in Uganda? A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Optimistic. D. Critical. D MASTER OF DISGUISE Octopuses are famous for their round bodies, big eyes, and eight arms. There are many different types of octopuses, but all are alike in one way: They are masters of disguise. Octopuses can change their appearance in less than a second to look like rocks, plants, or even other animals. How do they do this? An octopus can disguise itself in three ways. One is by using color. An octopus’s skin has special cells called chromatophores. These cells are filled with yellow, brown, and red pigment. When an octopus moves its muscles a certain way, the cells become large and produce colorful spots and other patterns on its skin. Chromatophores (色素体) can also reflect light. In blue light, for example, an octopus’s skin will look blue. In white light, its skin will look white. With these cells, an octopus can produce many different skin colors and patterns. An octopus can also change its skin texture. When the octopus moves its muscles, its skin can go from smooth to spiky. It might then look like a plant, or coral. Another way an octopus disguises itself is by changing its shape. Some, for example, roll their bodies into balls so they look like rocks. One type of octopus can change its form to look like other sea creatures — especially dangerous ones, such as sea snakes. Why are octopuses so good at disguising themselves? They have to be. The ocean is not a safe place for them. Because they have no bones in their bodies, octopuses are like large pieces of meat. Many predators want to eat them — and they can eat them whole. To survive, octopuses have developed the amazing ability to change their appearance very quickly in order to hide from predators. 12. What would be the best alternative title for this passage? A. The Mind of an Octopus B. How an Octopus Hides C. Octopuses in the Ocean Ecosystem D. The Secret Lives of Octopuses 13. Which of these sentences is NOT true? A. Chromatophores are light-reflecting cells. B. Chromatophores can change in size. C. Chromatophores produce an animal’s skin texture. D. Chromatophores contain different pigments. 14. In paragraph 3, the author suggests that some corals ________. A. can change their color B. can roll themselves into balls C. have spiky outer surfaces D. can disguise themselves as octopuses 15. Octopuses have excellent DISGUISE abilities. From this, we can infer that ________. A. Octopuses are at the top of the ocean food chain B. Octopuses use their camouflage (伪装) mainly for hunting other animals C. Camouflage is a crucial survival strategy for octopuses in a dangerous ocean environment D. Octopuses can change their color and texture only when they are in immediate danger 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Whether hiking your favorite trail or camping at your most treasured camp spot, you are responsible for leaving it untouched for the next guy! One-year-old Tallulah turned purple and stopped moving after the sweet became stuck in her throat.(一岁大的塔卢拉在糖果卡在喉咙里后,脸色发紫,一动不动。) 故选A。 根据文中“The only thing I could think was to go out into the street.” She said.““我唯一能想到的就是走到街上去。”她说。”和“I rushed out and screamed for someone to help while my grandma rushed out crying with Tallulah.”“我冲了出去,尖叫着找人帮忙,而我奶奶和塔卢拉也冲了出来。” She said, “I was waiting to go to work when I heard someone screaming for help, so I ran straight over.” D。 C Bamboo farming is on the rise in Uganda. The strong and fast-growing crop is seen by the East African government as having real growth possibility. A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Optimistic. D. Critical. B 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第二段中“A successful bamboo forest would protect the river against sand miners, farmers and others whose activities have long threatened it. “Once bamboo is established, it is almost like a net,” said Jeconious Musingwire. He is an environment officer, who is the project’s technical advisor. “The roots trap everything, including the surface runoff, and stabilize the weaknesses of the banks.”(一片成功的竹林将保护河流免受采砂工、农民和其他人的破坏,这些人的活动长期以来对河流造成威胁。“一旦竹子被种植,它几乎就像一张网,”Jeconious Musingwire说。他是一名环境官员,也是该项目的技术顾问。“树根困住了一切,包括地表径流,还能稳固堤岸疏松的部分。”)”可知,Jeconious Musingwire认为竹子种植的重要性体现在对生态环境的保护作用。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段Steve Tusiime的话“Bamboo is going to be a game changer in Africa. You can eat bamboo, you can use it to build, create a bamboo industry, you can feed it to your animals, and it can take care of your land.(竹子将改变非洲的格局。你可以食用竹子,可以用竹子建房,可以打造竹子产业,还可以用它喂牲畜,同时它还能养护你的土地。)”可知,竹子产业用途广泛,能够带动乌干达发展,帮助当地人获得更多收入。 【10题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段第一句“Bamboo farming is on the rise in Uganda.(乌干达的竹子种植正在兴起。)” D MASTER OF DISGUISE Octopuses are famous for their round bodies, big eyes, and eight arms. Octopuses can change their color and texture only when they are in immediate danger 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“There are many different types of octopuses, but all are alike in one way: They are masters of disguise. Octopuses can change their appearance in less than a second to look like rocks, plants, or even other animals. How do they do this?(章鱼种类繁多,但它们有一个共同点:都是伪装大师。章鱼能在不到一秒钟的时间里改变外形,伪装成岩石、植物,甚至其他动物。它们是怎么做到的呢?)”可知,全文围绕章鱼伪装的三种方法展开介绍,因此“章鱼如何隐藏自己”可以概括文章核心内容,适合作为替换标题。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“An octopus’s skin has special cells called chromatophores. These cells are filled with yellow, brown, and red pigment. When an octopus moves its muscles a certain way, the cells become large and produce colorful spots and other patterns on its skin. Chromatophores can also reflect light.(章鱼的皮肤里有一种名为色素细胞的特殊细胞。这些细胞含有黄色、棕色与红色色素。当章鱼以特定方式收缩肌肉时,细胞会膨胀变大,在皮肤表面形成彩色斑点与各式纹路。色素细胞还能够反射光线。)”可知,色素体负责变色,改变皮肤质地依靠肌肉而非色素体,所以,C项表述错误。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“When the octopus moves its muscles, its skin can go from smooth to spiky. It might then look like a plant, or coral.(章鱼活动肌肉时,它的皮肤能从光滑变得凹凸多刺,这时它看上去就会像一株植物或是珊瑚。)” 根据第四段中的“The ocean is not a safe place for them. Because they have no bones in their bodies, octopuses are like large pieces of meat. Many predators want to eat them — and they can eat them whole. To survive, octopuses have developed the amazing ability to change their appearance very quickly in order to hide from predators.(海洋对它们来说不是一个安全的地方。因为它们身体里没有骨头,章鱼就像大块的肉。许多捕食者想要吃掉它们,并且可以完整地把它们吃下。为了生存,章鱼进化出了快速改变外表的惊人能力,以此躲避捕食者。)”可知,海洋环境危险,伪装是章鱼赖以生存的关键手段。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Whether hiking your favorite trail or camping at your most treasured camp spot, you are responsible for leaving it untouched for the next guy!
