A 13-year-old boy, Jonathan Werner, is breaking a new path when it comes to the Scout (童子军) slogan “Do a Good Turn Daily”. The boy in Troop 506 has got an unusual high rank for someone of that age.
Like many troops, 506 sells popcorn each fall to raise money. In 2019, Jonathan watched as kids who’d made $1,800 or more in sales received a Lego set as a reward. “I really wanted that Lego set,” he says.
The next year, he earned his Lego set. But Troop 506 doesn’t just give out Lego sets. Under its generous reward program, scouts receive a percentage of their sales in gift cards and cash points. Inspired, Jonathan spent the next few years developing some astonishing tricks for selling.
Popcorn too expensive? A simple donation would do. No cash? Credit cards were acceptable. He set up in front of local stores, working 12 hours a day. He even struck a deal with a car dealer: In all his sales efforts, he’d wear a mask with the company’s logo if the owner would buy popcorn for all his employees.
Jonathan started pulling down jaw-dropping numbers. In 2021, he earned $46,193.75 in sales. He might have spent much on himself, but he had other ideas. The popcorn season closes in late November, and the holidays were on his mind — particularly the stories his father, Steve Kolk, had told him about his own days in foster (寄养) care.
“They didn’t really have New Year.” Jonathan says. With $5,000, he could bring New Year to a lot of kids. He shifted from a big seller to a big spender, hand-selecting $5,000 worth of gifts for dozens of kids according to their personal details. Each present must be hand-wrapped. And no kid should get just one gift. If you weren’t unwrapping at least two packages, you weren’t getting the real New Year morning experience that his father never had.
The next year he strengthened his efforts, achieving a higher aim in sales and spending more on gifts. “It really makes me happy,” he says, “the feeling that I’m making those kids happy on New Year.”
4. What originally motivated Jonathan to sell more popcorn?
A. Making money for Lego sets. B. Being persuaded by scout kids.
C. Desiring a toy he dreamed about. D. Receiving gift cards and cash points.
5. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Challenges Jonathan met in sales. B. Help that the car dealer provided.
C. Marketing strategies Jonathan used. D. The role the reward program played.
6. Why did Jonathan turn into a big spender over New Year?
A. He hoped the kids could experience real New Year.
B. His father suggested he should pay it forward.
C. He had earned enough money to spend on gifts.
D. A scout should do this during the popcorn closing season.
7. Which of the following can best describe Jonathan?
A. Determined and caring. B. Generous and cautious.
C. Confident but selfish. D. Modest but pessimistic.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. A 7. A
【解析】

【5题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Popcorn too expensive? A simple donation would do. No cash? Credit cards were acceptable. He set up in front of local stores, working 12 hours a day. He even struck a deal with a car dealer: In all his sales efforts, he’d wear a mask with the company’s logo if the owner would buy popcorn for all his employees.(爆米花太贵?简单的捐款也可以。没有现金?也可以刷信用卡。他在当地商店门口摆摊,每天工作12个小时。他甚至和一位汽车经销商达成合作:如果老板为所有员工购买爆米花,他就全程佩戴印有该公司标志的口罩售卖)”可知,第四段主要介绍了乔纳森售卖爆米花用到的各类营销方法与策略。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中的““They didn’t really have New Year.” Jonathan says. With $5,000, he could bring New Year to a lot of kids.(“他们没有体验过真正的新年,”Jonathan说。有了5000美元,他可以给很多孩子带来新年。)”和“If you weren’t unwrapping at least two packages, you weren’t getting the real New Year morning experience that his father never had.(如果孩子拆不到至少两份礼物,就无法拥有他父亲从未体验过的真正的新年清晨氛围)”可知,乔纳森在新年期间大量花钱购置礼物,是希望孩子们能够体验到真正的新年。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“He set up in front of local stores, working 12 hours a day.(他在本地商店门口摆摊,每天工作12小时)”以及第七段中的“The next year he strengthened his efforts, achieving a higher aim in sales and spending more on gifts.(第二年他更加努力,实现了更高的销售目标,也花更多钱购买礼物)”可知,乔纳森意志坚定;根据第六段中的“With $5,000, he could bring New Year to a lot of kids. He shifted from a big seller to a big spender, hand-selecting $5,000 worth of gifts for dozens of kids according to their personal details.(有了5000美元,他可以给很多孩子带来新年。他从销售大户变成了大手笔花费的人,根据几十个孩子的个人信息亲手挑选价值5000美元的礼物)”以及第七段中的““It really makes me happy,” he says, “the feeling that I’m making those kids happy on New Year.”(他说,“那种我让孩子们在新年感到开心的感觉,真的让我快乐”)”可知,他心怀善意、关爱他人,因此“坚定且有爱心”最符合对乔纳森的描述。
C
We often think about relationships on a scale from positive to negative. We are drawn to loving family members, caring classmates and supportive mentors. We do our best to avoid the cruel uncle, the playground bully and the jerk boss.
But the most harmful relationships aren’t the purely negative ones. They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But it’s not just friends. It’s the in-laws who volunteer to watch your kids but devalue your parenting. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion.
Groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships.
Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people talked about controversial topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”
The evidence that ambivalent relationships can be bad for us is obvious, but the reasons can be harder to read — just like the relationships themselves.
One reason is that ambivalent relationships are unpredictable. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde is going to show up. Feeling unsure can break the body’s calming system and activate a fight-or-flight response. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel.
Another factor is that unpleasant interactions are more painful in an ambivalent relationship. It’s more distressing to be let down by people you like sometimes than by people you dislike all the time. When someone stabs you in the back, it stings more if he’s been friendly to your face.
8. Which of the following can be considered as a frenemy?
A. Your neighbor’s kid who advises you to study hard but kill his own time.
B. Your classmate who admires your hard work but doubts your intelligence.
C. Your relative who requires you to do homework instead of using phones.
D. Your colleague who suggests finishing work while ensuring enough sleep.
9. What does the underlined word “distressing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Upsetting. B. Satisfying. C. Inspiring. D. Confusing.
10. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?
A. More unpredictable relationships cause less bodily stress.
B. Ambivalent relationships have a long-lasting effect on your well-being.
C. The common cause of high blood pressure is ambivalent relationship.
D. Interactions in ambivalent relationships hurt more than negative ones.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The harm of negative relationships. B. The unpredictability of ambivalent relationships.
C. The harm of ambivalent relationships. D. The superiority of positive relationships.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据文章第二段“We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you.(我们通常称这类人为亦敌亦友,即名义上的朋友,他们有时帮助你,有时伤害你)”可知,frenemy是同时兼具积极和消极行为的关系对象。
根据文章第三段“Groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships.(由心理学家伯特·乌奇诺和朱莉安·霍尔特·伦斯塔德领导的一项开创性研究显示,矛盾复杂的关系可能对健康造成损害,甚至比纯粹负面的关系更为严重。)”,结合第七段“Another factor is that unpleasant interactions are more painful in an ambivalent relationship. It’s more distressing to be let down by people you like sometimes than by people you dislike all the time.(另一个原因是,矛盾关系中的不愉快互动更痛苦。被你偶尔会喜欢的人辜负,比被你一直讨厌的人辜负更令人痛苦)”可推知,矛盾关系中的互动比纯粹负面关系的互动伤害更大。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。文章开篇点明最有害的关系不是纯粹负面关系,而是好坏混合的矛盾关系,接着用研究证明矛盾关系对健康危害更大,再分析危害更大的原因,全文围绕“矛盾关系的危害”展开。
D
Chinese scientists have developed a new refrigeration method that solves a long-standing challenge in cooling technology. Published in Nature, the study responds to rising energy demands in applications ranging from food preservation to data center cooling.
Traditional vapor-compression systems consume vast amounts of electricity and rely on harmful refrigerants. In China, refrigeration accounts for nearly 20% of the nation’s electricity use and 7.8% of its carbon emissions (碳排放). While solid-state cooling avoids harmful gases, it suffers from poor heat transfer, limiting its real-world application.
Led by Professor Li Bing from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team overcame this by combining solid cooling effects with liquid flow. They used a common, non-toxic salt whose dissolution (溶解) in water absorbs large amounts of heat. Conversely, applying pressure causes the salt to come out and release heat. Cycling this pressure achieves continuous cooling.
“Unlike traditional solid methods, where heat moves slowly, our system integrates the refrigerant and heat-transfer medium into a single liquid,” Li said. “This solves the ‘impossible triangle’ — achieving low pollution, strong cooling, and fast heat transfer all at once.”
Lab tests showed a temperature drop of nearly 30°C in just 20 seconds at room temperature, and up to 54°C at higher temperatures — significantly outperforming existing solid coolers. A prototype cycle achieved a cooling capacity of 67 joules per gram with nearly 77% efficiency. The system also proved stable, reversible, and instantly responsive to pressure changes.
“This technology moves beyond traditional refrigeration principles,” Li added. “By turning the coolant into a fluid, it opens the door to high-performance, zero-emission cooling for homes and industry.”
He noted the method’s strong high-temperature performance makes it an ideal candidate for heat management in next-generation AI computing facilities. While engineering challenges remain, especially in achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles, the principle could be adapted to other materials for diverse cooling needs.
12. What is the main problem with traditional solid-state cooling systems?
A. They transfer heat poorly. B. They produce harmful gases.
C. They fail at high temperature. D. They use too much electricity.
13. What is the key innovation of the new cooling method?
A. Using salt instead of chemical refrigerants.
B. Increasing pressure inside traditional systems.
C. Replacing pressure cycles with continuous flow.
D. Combining solid cooling with liquid heat transfer.
14. Why does the author mention the “impossible triangle” in the text?
A. To highlight the value of the new system.
B. To illustrate the design of the new system.
C. To explain why old systems are still in use.
D. To show the limitations of previous systems.
15. What does Li Bing see as a promising application of the new technology?
A. Preserving food in supply chains. B. Replacing traditional home refrigerators.
C. Cooling future AI data centers. D. Achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. C

Summer is the swimming season. As fun as a swimming pool can be, it’s also a major safety risk if you don’t take the proper measures. Here are some tips for a safe swimming season.
Have supervisors (监护人) to watch over the safety. ____16____. Supervisors should be an adult who can swim well and knows how to save others in a swimming pool. They mustn’t be distracted with their cellphone, or a conversation with another adult. They must take that role very seriously. ____17____. More children aged 1 to 4 die from drowning (溺水) than any other causes of death.
Keep a variety of floating devices in and around the pool like a life jacket plus pool noodles or a paddle board. That helps when accidents happen. ____18____.
Supervisors should also learn basic CPR. It only takes three steps, which is easy to learn. However, it saves life in the “golden four minutes” right after accidents happen.
____19____. Emergency department staff sometimes see serious head injuries and spinal cord injuries that come from careless diving. This happens more among teenagers and young adults. Prevent this by making sure people are only using existing diving boards that are designed to dive into deep water.
Another risk is a condition called “dry drowning”. This happens after a near-drowning event in which water gets into someone’s lungs. ____20____. Call 120 or go to the emergency department right away. This is very rare, but can be fatal (致命的).
A. Drowning can happen in an instant
B. Drowning isn’t the only danger with pools
C. Pool owners should be sure to have a fence around their pool
D. When someone is drowning, they should call for help as quickly as possible
E. A drowning person having something to grab can get out of the pool quickly
F. That means the airway is closed off and can’t provide someone with enough oxygen
G. If children or inexperienced swimmers are in the pool, it’s very important to have close supervision

第二节(满分 25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive. He just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire team of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions, we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.
Para.1 We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.

Para. 2 Then one day I got word that he was admitted to the hospital for a serious disease.

【答案】范文
Para.1
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Companion as I was in the project, I still had no sense of participating in the project. My teammate kept his brain occupied in developing the hypothesis, setting up an experiment to test it, and running the tests alone, leaving me just standing beside him as if I were a fool. “What a dull project it is!” I murmured to myself. However, something changed gradually, as I became aware what the tactile-kinesthetic perception of space meant. Thanks to the intense, fiercely competitive, singularly serious fellow, the whole procedure went smoothly, close to the final stage.
Para. 2
Then one day I got word that he was admitted to the hospital for a serious disease. Without any delay, I packed up my school bag, took all the experiment statistics and rushed to the hospital. Seeing the pale fellow wearing pure white clothes instead of the annoying dark clothes, I felt a sense of sympathy and mercy welling up in my heart. With his guidance, I finished the statistical analysis and presented the findings. It turned out to be such an amazing and persuasive study that my teammate and I did win the best grade. Now, we have been most reliable cooperative partners ever since!
