As a boy, like all other boys, I wanted to be a man. But my parents did everything for me. Actually, they managed every minute of my life. Although they loved me, I felt a bit unhappy with them. “Zheng Chenyu, do your homework!” “Practise the piano!” “Turn off the TV!” I became so bored with their orders that I wished they would leave me alone.
Well, my wish came true! Although my parents were very worried about leaving me, they had to go away on business for a few days. Now was my chance! I could have some fun at last! As soon as I got home from school the first day, I happily threw my schoolbag on the sofa and ate lots of snacks. Then I enjoyed an exciting film on TV, and after that I played computer games. I liked the games so much that I played until midnight.
The next morning I woke up late, I had to hurry to school without breakfast, but I was still late. The teacher asked me for my homework, but I could not hand it in. With an empty stomach, I was unable to play basketball with my classmates! I felt tired and sleepy at school all day long.
When I got home, I tried to cook some rice, but I burnt it. I even dropped my father’s cup when I was cooking! I found myself so bad at simple cooking tasks. I started to feel lonely. Dad always helped me with any difficult questions, and told funny jokes when I was unhappy. Then I realised being home alone was not always perfect.

Born and raised in Africa, I first learned about China through famous Kungfu movies. And when I was in college, I was lucky to get a chance to visit the famous Shaolin Temple in Henan Province.
At the time, I didn’t realize that besides the long-expected Kungfu, thousands of surprises were waiting for me in China. To begin with, I was not prepared for the weather. It was a difficult change from hot summer in Africa to cold winter in China. The language was a huge problem for me as well. Getting used to Chinese food also seemed impossible then, but now I’m a great fan of the food here.
The Kungfu training was far from easy and the first week was the hardest. We got up at 5 a.m. and practised throughout the day. The rest of the time was used for having meals and studying Chinese language and culture. Although it was very tiring, the repeated and long-time exercises built up both my body and mind. The life in Shaolin Temple made me realize how important politeness, respect and perseverance (毅力) are to the basic spirit of Chinese Kungfu and that they should be practised throughout our daily lives.
Day by day, I came to notice that China is a place full of wonders, a place where hard work pays off. And I finally fell in love with its culture and people. That’s why I’ve decided to stay and continue my studies in China.
The world is becoming better united, and all our cultures are amazing. I will happily be a bridge of China to the world, sharing my stories in this open and people-centered (以人为本的) country.
13. How did the writer first get to know China?
A. By watching Kungfu movies. B. By tasting Chinese food.
C. By reading Kungfu stories D. By taking a Chinese class.
14. What did the writer learn from his life in Shaolin Temple?
A. Kungfu is the most important part of Chinese culture.
B. Politeness and perseverance are key in Chinese spirit.
C. It’s impossible for foreigners to get used to Chinese life.
D. Chinese food is too difficult to accept for Africans.
15. Why did the writer decide to continue his studies in China?
A. He wanted to visit more of China’s wonders.
B. He found a well-paid job and began a new life.
C. He got a chance to play a role in a Kungfu movie.
D. He developed a love for Chinese culture and people.
16. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this text?
A. To express thanks to his home country.
B. To share his wonderful experience in China.
C. To invite more people to learn Chinese Kungfu.

Some people think they know everything, but Anansi the spider didn’t think that. He knew that to have real wisdom (智慧), he had to learn more.
One day, Anansi found an empty basket and he had an idea. “If I get advice from others and put it in this basket, then I will be wiser than anyone else in the world.”
So, he went from house to house and asked the other animals, “What’s your best piece of advice?” And they were all happy to share their wisdom.
The bee said, “You should never judge (评判) people by their looks. Under an ugly coat, there’s often a beautiful heart.”
The snail (蜗牛) said, “Don’t be in a hurry. Life isn’t a 100-metre race.”
The ant said, “You’ll never be great on your own. Everyone needs the help of others.”
The fly said, “Work for eight hours, sleep for eight hours, and play for eight hours.”
Anansi was happy with the advice he got. He thought, “I have more wisdom now but I must hide it, so no one can steal (偷) it.” He looked around and saw a hole high up in the tree. “That’s where I’ll hide the wisdom,” he said.
But the basket was so big that Anansi could hardly climb the tree. His son was nearby watching him. “Daddy, why not tie the basket to your back to climb the tree?” “Cool. Thank you for sharing your advice,” said Anansi, and at that moment he realized that advice is only useful when we share it with someone.

Problems Help Me Grow Up
As we all know, it’s common to meet all kinds of problems in daily life. I once couldn’t get on well with my parents. They were angry about my low exam marks, and we argued with each other a lot.
I realized communication really mattered. I talked with them patiently and showed them my hard study efforts. Finally, they understood me and gave me much warm support.
From this experience, I learn we should face troubles bravely and communicate patiently with others to solve all problems.
