Useful TEFL Sites
Askmytutor
It’s always heartwarming to see a professional offering to answer questions sent in by students over the net, and this is clearly the strongest aspect of this TEFL site. The site’s design is bright and clear, suitable for its young target audiences, but it’s a shame that none of the activities offered take advantage of the interactive (交互式的) qualities of the net. In the current climate of technological progress, being asked to print out and complete a word search puzzle by hand could best be described as “strange”.
BBC World Service
This is a comprehensive site for teachers and students offering online courses, an e-mail discussion forum (论坛) run by Alice and Bee, and an invaluable news stories section where recordings of features can be accessed together with a detailed explanation of key vocabulary and idioms. The Learning English section provides teachers with a large number of present-day “issue” topic areas. As well as raising all the questions to get a more advanced class discussion going, there are online recordings of experts voicing their opinions which could provide excellent listening practice.
Dr Kenji Kitao’s keypal resource
A keypal is a computer pen pal and the Dr Kenji Kitao site offers numerous links for e-mail projects divided into those that are suitable for students and others designed for teachers wishing to develop writing partnerships with colleagues at other schools.
Learn English
Created by the British Council, and available in a wide range of languages, this site is an unmissable resource for language teachers involved with children of any age. Simple word games, poetry, songs, lyrics and stories are all available as resources to support a lesson or as standalone activities. This is not simply a resource site, however, but also gives advice on finding a suitable language course depending on your country of origin.
21. What is the disadvantage of Askmytutor?
A. Its activities can't be done online.
B. Its design can't satisfy young audiences.
C. Its professionals are far from committed.
D. Its courses are quite beyond young audiences.
22. What can you do at BBC World Service?
A. Improve your listening skills. B. Discuss a topic with an expert.
C. Make a few featured recordings. D. Start a new e-mail discussion forum.
23. Which site should you visit if you want to get an online penfriend?
A. Askmytutor. B. Learn English.
C. BBC World Service. D. Dr Kenji Kitao's keypal resource.

A new study suggests people might like chatbot-produced poems for their simple and straightforward images, emotions and themes.
In a recent experiment, the researchers tasked OpenAI’s ChatGPT with generating poems in the styles of famous poets, then presented 1,634 participants with ten poems — five human-written and five chatbot-generated — and assessed how people rated the poems based on 14 qualities, including rhythm and originality. Interestingly, they tended to rate the AI-generated poems higher on average, suggesting a preference for their straightforwardness and clarity.
Why readers seem to prefer AI-generated poetry is not entirely clear, but the researchers’ best guess is that the AI poems may be more appealing because they are relatively straightforward and simple to comprehend. “Emily Dickinson sometimes breaks the expected rhyme scheme (韵律) on purpose,” says Brian Porter, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, “But the AI-generated poems in her style never did that once.” Besides, modern readers don’t seem to want to bother themselves to read deep to think critically. Instead, they prefer texts giving them instant answers. “When readers say they prefer AI poetry, they would seem to be showing their frustration when faced with writing that does not yield to their attention,” he adds.
While the findings raise concerns about AI potentially replacing human artists and putting them out of work one day, Dorothea Lasky, the only living poet whose writings were included in the experiments, says it’s not necessarily a bad thing that readers enjoyed the AI-generated poems. “Poetry will always be necessary,” Lasky says, “If they read AI poems and like that poem better than a human-generated poem, then that, to me, is beautiful. They have a good experience with a poem, and I don’t care who wrote it. I feel there is room for all poets — even robot poets.”
This study provided a platform for the intersection of technology and creativity, prompting reflection on the future of poetry and artistic expression.
24. Why did the researchers conduct the experiment?
A. To create a technique. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To detail an example. D. To confirm a finding.
25. What does the example of Emily Dickinson imply?
A. Robots are more complicated than humans.
B. AI meets modern readers’ reading preference.
C. Chatbot is trained to write in creative patterns.
D. Classic poetry lacks unique charming features.
26. Which belief does Dorothea Lasky have about poetry?
A. All flowers bloom together. B. No dish suits all tastes.
C. It’s no use crying over spilt milk. D. Time and tide wait for no man.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Will Poets Be lost in AI Era? B. ChatGPT: a New Advancement
C. Fake or Real — a Concern about AI D. ChatGPT or Dickinson, Who is better?
C
Confirmation bias refers to people’s tendency to seek out information that supports their existing beliefs. While it’s usually subconscious, its impacts are significant. It can cloud people’s judgement and decision-making processes.
One explanation for confirmation bias is that it is an efficient way to process information. Humans are constantly fed with information and cannot possibly take the time to carefully process each piece. It is adaptive for humans to rely on subconscious, automatic judgements that contribute to the efficiency. Another reason why people show confirmation bias is to protect their self-worth. People like to feel good about themselves, and discovering a belief they highly value is incorrect makes them feel bad about themselves. Therefore, confirmation bias will encourage them to disregard the information contrary to their belief.
Researches show that confirmation bias is strong and widespread. In studies examining my-side bias, people were able to generate and remember more reasons supporting their side of a controversial issue than the opposing side. Only when a researcher directly asked people to generate arguments against their own beliefs were they able to do so. It is not that people are incapable of generating arguments that are contrary to their beliefs, but, rather, people are not motivated to do so.
Confirmation bias also surfaces in interpersonal communication. When interacting with people who perceivers think have certain personalities, the perceivers will ask questions that are biased toward supporting the perceivers’ beliefs. If a new roommate is expected to be friendly and outgoing, Maria may ask her if she likes to go to parties rather than asking if she often studies in the library.
Confirmation bias may lead to incomplete and misinterpreted understanding of an issue or topic, as crucial information may be overlooked or dismissed. Thus, to avoid it, people are supposed to diversify the sources of information accessed as seeking multiple perspectives brings a broader understanding of the subject matter and allows for well-rounded decision-making. Another way is to actively challenge the bias by questioning assumptions and relying on evidence rather than personal opinions, which helps us consciously recognize informational biases and minimize their impact.
28. Why do people show confirmation bias?
A. To help maintain their dignity. B. To prevent shallow judgements.
C. To handle complex information. D. To develop their logical reasoning.
29. What did the studies in Paragraph 3 find?
A. People couldn’t produce arguments against their belief.
B. Information supporting people’s belief often won preference.
C. It took considerable motivation to face controversial issues.
D. People focused on information concerning the opposing side.
30. How does the writer illustrate confirmation bias in communication?
A. By making comparison. B. By giving an example.
C. By introducing a study. D. By defining a concept.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The role of my-side bias in enhancing people’s own beliefs.
B. The effects of information overload on decision-making process.
C. The impact of confirmation bias on interpersonal communication.
D. Understanding of confirmation bias and strategies to overcome it.
D
Just as damaged teeth can be replaced with gold crowns (齿冠), scientists are exploring how gold can be used to repair damaged parts of the brain.
Scientists at Linkoping University in Sweden said that a “brain of gold” might just be what we need to fight nervous system diseases. The plan is to put gold electrodes (电极) into the affected part of the brain. They will act as “telephone operators” between nerve cells and electronic medical devices, enabling communication so that the nervous system can function normally.
Treatment plans that involve connecting medical devices to the brain already exist. However, the electrodes used are usually made of hard metals, while the brain is like a jelly that “shakes” at the body’s slightest movement.
“As the body is constantly in motion, achieving close contact between something that is hard and something that is soft and breakable becomes a problem,” explained Klas Tybrandt, one of the scientists.
This is why the Swedish scientists are using a new material called “gold nanowires” (金纳米线). As the name suggests, these are long, extremely thin gold threads — 1,000 times thinner than human hair. By putting them into rubber, the scientists have successfully created electrodes that are soft enough to connect comfortably with the human brain.
Gold can be made into structures as small as nanowires. According to Live Science, gold can be stretched, pressed or even rolled into all kinds of shapes without breaking. What’s more, gold doesn’t react with other chemicals in the human brain, making it a safe choice. Once placed in the brain, gold nanowires can last for at least three years, which is longer than many materials currently in use.
32. What role will gold electrodes play in treating nervous system diseases?
A. Replacing damaged nerve cells. B. Serving as a communication link.
C. Activating different brain regions. D. Protecting the brain’s unaffected parts.
33. What can we learn about gold nanowires?
A. They are harder than rubber. B. They are as thin as human hair.
C. They can be placed into the brain. D. They are in the final stage of development.
34. Why is gold a safe choice for use in the brain?
A. It can be stretched by the brain. B. It can be made into various shapes.
C. It is being used to create soft electrodes. D. It has no negative impact on the brain’s functions.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The unique properties of gold nanowires.
B. The history of gold use in the medical field.
C. The current applications of gold in the brain.
D. The potential use of gold in nervous system treatment.

She came into my life when I was seven years old. My dad found her at work. She was wandering and starving. He took one look at her, and said, “Seems like you could use a good home.” He opened up the door to his truck and she jumped in. Her tail wagged (摇动) all the way.
I was still at school when dad arrived home with the puppy. Mom and dad fed her and gave her a bath. This would be my first pet.
I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well, I guess they figured the time was right.
When I walked back home, a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head greeted me with many many puppy kisses. A wild joy took hold of me and a very special friendship was born that day.
Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail didn’t wag back and forth like others, but went in a circle. He moved his finger around his ear, and said, “She’s squirrely”. Thus my puppy got her name, Squirrely.

16. How do most people in the speaker's hometown book tickets for films?
A. By going to the ticket office.
B. By making telephone calls.
C. By using the Internet.
【答案】13. C 14. B 15. A 16. C
【解析】
【原文】W: I live on an island off the west coast of Scotland. I love it here but a trip to the cinema means a 55-minute boat journey as well as a half-hour drive to the nearest town. That’s why we all get so excited about the Screen Machine. It’s a mobile cinema that travels round the Scottish islands, visiting 23 different areas in turn every seven weeks, and sometimes we get to see the latest movies.
You can’t miss the huge, bright blue Screen Machine when it comes into the car park. It takes an hour for it to be transformed into a comfortable, air-conditioned 80-seat cinema. It’s amazing.
I really admire the Screen Machine’s driver. Of course, he screens the film. And there is always another person selling tickets. They need a repairman, too. The salt in the sea air isn’t good for the truck’s engines and they can break down.
Ticket prices are very reasonable, so as you can imagine, as soon as the Screen Machine arrives, the ticket office phone starts ringing. We can now also book in advance on the Screen Machine website, which makes it even more convenient. And that’s the way most people choose now. It’s an amazing service and much better than a long journey across the sea to the cinema.

【原文】Hello, viewers. Thanks for turning on WBEZ Channel 7. I have some breaking weather news updates for you. We have some cold weather headed toward us this Thursday evening. It will start raining tonight around five or six. And the temperature will drop below freezing overnight, which means snow during the night! I predict it will pile up to three or four inches. In the morning, it may get even more dangerous. The snow may turn into frozen rain and become ice everywhere.
Even though the town is putting salt on the roads to prepare for the weather, the roads will still be very icy and bad to drive on. High schools around the area have already closed for tomorrow, and the local college is considering shutting. I recommend buying a lot of food and water and staying inside for the next one or two days. It may take a while for the ice to melt and the trucks to push all the snow off the road. Thanks for listening in to this update, and please be careful out there.

【答案】24. D 25. B 26. A 27. D

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. B 31.

【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. D

五、语法填空:本大题共1小题,共15分。
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The Milky Way formed around 13.5 billion years ago, but it's not possible to travel back in time to see exactly how it ___56___ (happen). Studies of the Galaxy's ancient stars offer some clues, as do simulations (模拟), ___57___ the observable light from our home galaxy (星系) was emitted (发出) too recently ___58___ (enable) astronomers to examine its beginnings directly. One way around this problem is to study other galaxies that resemble the Milky Way. Mowla used observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to investigate ___59___ distant galaxy with a mass that matches the expected mass of the Milky Way ___60___ (short) after its formation in the early universe.
When astronomers observe distant galaxies, they see light that was emitted billions of years ago, because it takes time ___61___light to travel across space to their telescopes. ___62___ (earth) distance from such faraway galaxies, and thus how long ago their light was emitted, can be measured, thanks to the constant ___63___ (expand) of the universe. As light journeys across the vastness of space, its wavelength is stretched along with the expanding fabric of space, ___64___ (make) it seem redder than it was when it was emitted. And the change in the wavelength ___65___ (determine) by the distance the light travels and the age of the universe at the time of emission.
【答案】56. happened
57. but 58. to enable
59. a 60. shortly
61. for 62. Earth’s
63. expansion
64. making 65. is determined
前文“offer some clues”与后文“the observable light...was emitted too recently”存在转折关系,故填并列连词but。故填but。
【58题详解】
考查固定搭配。句意:同上。“too ... to do sth.”是固定结构,意为“太……而不能做某事”,因此此处填enable的不定式形式to enable。故填to enable。
故填a。
【60题详解】
考查副词。句意:同上。此处修饰动词短语“after its formation”,需用short的副词形式shortly,“shortly after”表示“在……之后不久”。故填shortly。
【61题详解】
考查介词。句意:当天文学家观测遥远星系时,他们看到的是数十亿年前发出的光,因为光需要花费时间穿越浩瀚太空到达望远镜。“it takes time for sth. to do sth.”是固定句型,意为“某物花费时间做某事”,因此此处填介词for。故填for。
故填is determined。
六、书面表达:本大题共1小题,共15分。

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】One possible version:
Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I’m writing to express that my predilection goes to “Guess who I am”, which capitalizes on an object clause to signal its potential contents.
The column will serve as a catalyst for closer bonds between students. Redoubling efforts to boost academic performance, we pay little heed to other classmates’ personalities, hobbies, strengths, and even aspirations. Such an inviting column, adopting a “description and guess” approach, must expose everyone to others’ characteristics, thus strengthening mutual understanding. More importantly, more friendships will be forged, since the column enables us to befriend someone on the same wavelength.
This eye-catching column, I’m firmly convinced, won’t fail to grant the whole class a harmonious atmosphere.
Yours,
Li Hua

67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
Squirrely was a smart dog and brought me much joy. Every time she saw me, she would greet me with many gentle kisses, wagging her tail in circles. After school, I would walk her in the neighborhood, running, talking and laughing. When I gave her a bath, she would stare at me and kiss my hands gently, as if to say:“Thank you, my friend!”Also, I fed her and taught her to play hide and seek. With time passing by, we spent our days learning and growing together.
However, arthritis (关节炎) hit my best friend when she was 12. She seemed so painful and could barely walk. I carried her to see the vet in a hurry, but was told there was no special treatment for the disease caused by old age. Seeing her suffering so much, I felt heart-broken. All I could do was to accompany her all the time. Three weeks later, she left me quietly. I buried her in the yard, where we had a lot of fun. I knew my good friend would be with me always.

I live on an island off the west coast of scotland. I love IT here, but a trip to the cinema means a fifty five minute boat journey as well as a half hour drive to the nearest town. That's why we all get so excited about the screen machine. It's a mobile cinema that travels round the Scottish islands, visiting twenty three different areas in turn every seven weeks. And sometimes we get to see the latest movies. You can't miss the huge bright blue screen machine. When IT comes into the car park, IT takes an hour for IT to be transformed into a comfortable, air conditioned AD, C. cinema. It's amazing. I really admire the screen machines. The driver, of course, he screams the film. And there is always another person selling tickets. They need a repairman to the salt in the sea. Air isn't good for the trucks, engines, and they can break down. Ticket Prices are very reasonable, so as you can imagine, as soon as the screen machine arrives, the ticket office phones starts ringing. We can now also book in advance on the screen machine website, which makes me even more convenient, and that's the way most people choose now. It's an amazing service and much Better than a long journey across the sea to the cinema.
Have you been shopping today? Yeah, I went to the street market for the first time, and I got a new poster for my bedroom. I've been looking for IT for ages. I wish i'd bought IT when I first saw in the gift shop near the gym where we played the badminton last time. Oh yes, they had lots of wonderful posters. The photo was taken by the famous mountain climate, jero blank. I'm really glad i've got IT at last.
Hello, viewers, thanks for turning on WBEZ, channel seven. I have some breaking weather news updates for you. We have some cold weather headed toward us this thursday evening. IT will start raining tonight around five or six, and the temperature will drop below freezing overnight, which means snow during the night. I predict that will pile up to three or four inches in the morning. IT may get even more dangerous. The snow may turn into frozen rain and become ice everywhere, even though the town is putting salt on the roads to prepare for the weather, the roads will still be very icy and bad to drive on. High schools around the area have already closed for tomorrow, and the local college is considering shutting. I recommend buying a lot of food and water and staying inside for the next one two days. IT may take a while for the ice to melt and the trucks to push all the snow off the road. Thanks for listening in to this update, and please be careful out there.
