If you look up in the sky, you probably see, at some point, an aircraft. And behind that aircraft are white, fluffy streaks (条纹). And that's what we call a contrail. Contrails are made up of ice crystals that form when aircraft engines emit exhaust (废气) that hits the cold air.
The ice crystals reflect incoming light from the sun back into space, which has a cooling effect on the atmosphere. But the contrails also stop heat coming up from the ground from escaping into space. It is reflected back down toward the ground. And so that's a warming effect. Stettler, an engineer from Imperial College London, says, on balance, contrails warm the atmosphere more than they cool it. And that's mainly because the cooling effect due to reflecting of sunlight can only happen during the day, when the sun's shining, whereas the warming effect due to trapping of outgoing heat happens all of the time.
How long do contrails last? This depends on the atmospheric conditions at the altitude where a plane is flying. Some contrails can form clouds that last for up to 18 hours. During that time, they spread out, trapping even more heat. This process allows contrails to warm the planet about as much as the carbon dioxide emissions from aircraft.
But when Stettler and his team analyzed flight data they obtained of Japan airspace, they found that most contrail warming was caused by just 2 percent of flights. And most of those flights originated in the late afternoon because as the sun goes down, cooling can no longer offset (抵消) the warming. And the warming effect continues to exist throughout the evening into the night. But what if the contrails that contribute the most to warming could be got rid of?
4. What does “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A cooling effect.
B. Heat from the ground.
C. Light from the sun.
D. Exhaust hitting the cold air.
5. What can be learned about contrails?
A. They can easily disappear in the air.
B. They actually contribute to global warming.
C. Their cooling effect happens all of the time.
D. Their warming effect is usually overlooked.
6. What is most likely to be talked about next?
A. A future plan for Japan airspace.
B. The negative influence of contrails.
C. Other potential causes of contrails.
D. A possible way to remove contrails.
C
GPS has completely transformed how we get around. But other animals have long had their navigation (领航) systems built right in.
“We know their eyes are quite sensitive to polarized (偏振的) light and the sky has a particular pattern of polarized light relative to the position of the sun,” Barbara Webb, a researcher at the University of Edinburgh, says.
You can see polarized light firsthand if you take a pair of polarized sunglasses and spin them against the sky-the light passing through the glasses changes. Webb says the insects have polarization like that built into their many eyes. “You can think of it as having lots of sunglasses pointing in different directions.”
But Webb was curious whether there’s really enough information in the sky to give insects an accurate sense of direction. So her team built a sensor (传感器) modeled after a desert ant eye and put it under artificial light meant to simulate the sky. They then put that sensor into a model meant to model the brains of desert ants and other insects. And they found that with the insects’ sensing and processing equipment, they can likely sense direction down to just a couple degrees of error.
A system based on that of insects could someday be a cheap, low-energy choice to GPS. Insects have very tiny brains. A brain the size of a pinhead that’s using hardly any energy. And yet they’re still able to navigate better than we can with GPS, which is surprising. Webb is now working on building a robot that can use light to get its directions.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. GPS is not accurate enough.
B. Insects have better eyes than humans.
C. Light changes passing through polarized sunglasses.
D. Insects have tiny brains that use no energy.
8. What does the underlined word “simulate” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Pretend. B. Cover.
C. Block. D. See.
9. What did Webb’s research find?
A. Insects can’t find their ways during nights.
B. Insects can find directions with little mistakes.
C. Insects always make mistakes finding directions.
D. Insects have sensing and processing equipment in their eyes.
10. Which of the following can best describe insects’ navigation ability?
A. Disappointing. B. Interesting.
C. Amazing. D. Confusing.
D
Machine learning sees reasoning as a categorization task with a fixed set of predetermined labels. It views the world as a fixed space of possibilities, calculating and weighing them all. This approach, of course, has achieved notable successes when applied to stable and well-defined situations such as chess or computer games. When such conditions are absent, however, machines struggle.
In 2008, Google launched Flu Trends, a web service that aimed to predict flu-related doctor visits using big data. The project, however, failed to predict the 2009 HINI flu outbreak. After several unsuccessful adjustments to its algorithm (算法), Google finally stopped the project in2015.
In such unstable situations, the human brain behaves differently. Sometimes, it simply forgets. Instead of getting trapped in irrelevant data, it relies only on the most recent information and makes creative decisions. This is a feature called intelligent forgetting. Adopting this approach, an algorithm that relies on a single data point would have reduced Google Flu Trends' prediction error by half.
Intelligent forgetting is just one dimension of psychological AI, an approach to machine intelligence that also includes other features of human intelligence such as causal reasoning, intuitive (直觉) psychology, and physics. Soon, this approach to Al will finally be recognized as fundamental for solving poorly-defined problems. Exploring these amazing features of the human brain will finally allow us to make machine learning smart.
One feature of psychological Al is that it is explainable. Until recently, researchers assumed that the more transparent an AI system was, the less accurate its predictions were. This mirrored the widespread but incorrect belief that complex problems always need complex solutions. Now, this idea will be laid to rest. As the case of flu predictions illustrates, powerful and simple psychological algorithms can often give more accurate predictions than complex algorithms. Psychological AI opens up a new vision for explainable AI: Instead of trying to explain complex systems, we can check first if psychological Al offers a simple and equally accurate solution.
Without the help of human psychology, it will become clearer that the application of this type of machine learning to unstable situations eventually runs up against impassable limitations. We will finally recognize that more computing power makes machines faster. Not smarter.
11. Why is Flu Trends mentioned?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To tell the serious outbreak.
C. To support the author's idea. D. To provide readers with the truth.
12. What is the advantage of human brain according to the passage?
A. It can think outside the box. B. It can avoid unclear problems.
C. It is capable of learning over time. D. It is good at following instructions.
13. Which has the similar meaning with the underlined word “transparent” in paragraph 5?
A. Similar. B. Unique. C. Complete. D. Clear.
14. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. AI speeds up the computing greatly.
B. Psychological Al can make smarter AI.
C. AI system works well in stable situations.
D. AI will outperform the human brain someday.

Develop Positive Relationships
One of the most profound experiences we can have in our lives is the connection we have with other human beings. Positive and supportive relationships will help us to feel healthier, happier, and more satisfied with our lives. ____15____
●Accept and celebrate differences.
____16____ Yet when we try to build relationships, we expect that people will think like we do. In this way, it is so much easier to create a friendly relationship. However, while we may find it initially easier, the novelty of sameness soon would wear off. So accepting that we are all different is a great starting point.
●Listen effectively.
Listening is a crucial skill in boosting another person’s self-esteem.____17____In active listening, we also are genuinely interested in understanding what the other person is thinking, feeling, wanting, or what the message means, and we are active in checking out our understanding before we respond with our own new message. This process is what distinguishes active listening and makes it effective.
●____18____
In a world where time is of the essence, we don’t always have the time to give to our loved ones. Being present in the time you give to people is important. In other words, when you are with someone, you are truly with someone and not living in the past or worrying about the future. Devoting time, energy, and effort to building relationships is one of the most valuable life skills.
●Manage mobile technology.
By now, everyone has a mobile phone and many people have two or more. While they are a lifesaver in an emergency, and an effective tool for communication, they also can be a complete distraction when people exhibit a lack of mobile phone etiquette (礼仪).____19____
A. Give people your time.
B. Develop your communication skills.
C. We can perceive the world variously.
D. Active listening is the most useful listening skill.
E. So here are some tips to help you develop more positive relationships.
F. Pay attention to who you are with and answer the phone when necessary.
G. So technology has somewhat weakened our ability to build a good relationship.

Taylor Hash wanted to be a career pilot. She had just started building up hours of flight time when disaster struck. As she guided the Diamond Star plane off the runway at Oakland County International airport, on her third-ever independent flight, the front tyre (轮胎) of her plane fell off.
Taylor was unaware at that point that she had just lost crucial landing equipment. “I didn’t feel anything on the takeoff roll (起飞滑跑).” she said.
Experienced pilot Chris Yates, though, saw something on the takeoff roll and immediately took action. He knew that Taylor would have to make a difficult emergency landing. He radioed the control tower and said, “The Diamond Star that just took off lost its nose (头部) wheel tyre on the runway.”
But the control tower operators didn’t know what to do. They’d never seen such a thing happen before. Yates asked them to put him through to Taylor so he could help her.
When Taylor learned what had happened, she was in panic. With only 57 total fight hours under her belt, she didn’t know what her options were and could only imagine how this was going to end.
“I didn’t know what to do in that moment,” said Taylor later. “I’m just panicking and figuring out how I’m going to land this plane safely.”
But Yates knew what to do. He knew that the most important thing would be to keep Taylor calm so that she could follow his instructions effectively.
Yates started by reassuring (使安心) Taylor that everything was going to turn out just fine: “Taylor, this is Chris Yates. My daughter’s name is Taylor, and I taught her to fly! We’re gonna be just fine. Just take your time.” He told her that she could circle the field until she was ready to land. “When you touch down, I just want that stick (操纵杆) all the way back. You’re gonna hold that stick back like you don’t want that nose to touch,” he coached her.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Despite feeling scared and unsure, Taylor trusted Yates and followed his instructions.

C 12. A 13. D 14. B
根据第一段“This approach, of course, has achieved notable successes when applied to stable and well-defined situations such as chess or computer games. When such conditions are absent, however, machines struggle.”(当然,这种方法在应用于国际象棋或电脑游戏等稳定且定义明确的情况时取得了显著的成功。 根据第二段“In 2008, Google launched Flu Trends, a web service that aimed to predict flu-related doctor visits using big data. The project, however, failed to predict the 2009 HINI flu outbreak. After several unsuccessful adjustments to its algorithm (算法), Google finally stopped the project in2015.”(2008年,谷歌推出了流感趋势,这是一项旨在利用大数据预测流感相关医生就诊情况的网络服务。
根据第三段“In such unstable situations, the human brain behaves differently. Sometimes, it simply forgets. Instead of getting trapped in irrelevant data, it relies only on the most recent information and makes creative decisions.”(在这种不稳定的情况下,人类的大脑会有不同的表现。 故选A项。
根据第五段“This mirrored the widespread but incorrect belief that complex problems always need complex solutions.”(这反映了一种普遍但不正确的观点,即复杂的问题总是需要复杂的解决方案)可知,直到最近,研究人员还认为人工智能系统越清晰,其预测就越不准确。
通读全文以及根据第四段“Exploring these amazing features of the human brain will finally allow us to make machine learning smart.”(探索人类大脑的这些惊人特征将最终使我们能够使机器学习变得智能。)根据最后一段“Without the help of human psychology, it will become clearer that the application of this type of machine learning to unstable situations eventually runs up against impassable limitations.”(如果没有人类心理学的帮助,将越来越清楚的是,将这种类型的机器学习应用于不稳定的情况最终会遇到不可逾越的限制)可知,作者想告诉我们心理人工智能可以让人工智能变得更聪明。

45. 学校英文社将组织以“Technology makes people closer or more distant”为话题的辩论赛,请你就此写一篇短文参加比赛,内容包括:
1. 表达观点;
2. 陈述原因;
1. 写作词数应为80左右;
Technology makes people closer or more distant
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
AI Version 1:
Technology undoubtedly brings people closer.
Firstly, it bridges geographical gaps, allowing us to communicate instantly through video calls, messaging apps, and social media. This helps us to maintain strong connections with friends and family no matter where they are. Secondly, technology develops global connections, enabling people to share ideas, cultures, and experiences across borders, which creates opportunities for international cooperation and understanding. Lastly, technology provides platforms for people with shared interests to connect, such as online communities, forums, and gaming networks, where like-minded individuals can form meaningful relationships.
In conclusion, technology is a powerful tool that strengthens relationships and unites people worldwide, making the world feel smaller and more interconnected.
AI Version 2:
While technology connects us virtually, it often creates emotional distance.
Firstly, overuse of technological devices reduces face-to-face interactions, weakening personal bonds. For instance, people may spend more time on their phones than talking to those around them, leading to a sense of disconnection. Secondly, online communication, which lacks the depth of in- person conversations, often fails to carry messages like facial expressions and tones. This can result in misunderstandings or distant relationships, making it harder to build trust. Moreover, over-relying on technology, designed to simplify our lives, can cause separation, because people prefer screens to real-life connections.
In conclusion, technology, if misused, can drive people apart by replacing meaningful interactions with impersonal digital exchanges.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Despite feeling scared and unsure, Taylor trusted Yates and followed his instructions.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Taylor went up to Yates after she stepped out of the plane safely.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Despite feeling scared and unsure, Taylor trusted Yates and followed his instructions. After circling the airport a few times, she got ready to make the emergency landing. With Yates talking to her all the way, a sense of calm washed over her. “You’re doing greatly,” he encouraged, “keep that stick all the way back.” Taylor could see the runway coming up quickly. The plane touched down, the nose hitting the ground. Taylor felt the plane shaking and bouncing until it came to a complete stop. She made it!
Taylor went up to Yates after she stepped out of the plane safely. With tears of gratitude in her eyes, she hugged him tightly and thanked him for his guidance during the crisis. “Had you not seen the wheel off,” Uttered Taylor, “it’s hard to think about what could have happened.” Yates praised that she had done a great job in landing the plane safely with such limited flight experience. Through misty eyes, Taylor could see the path to her career as a pilot become clearer than ever.
