If you love art then, “Picasso” is going to speak a lot, and modern art is a result of Picasso’ s works and he stands by as one of the legendary figures to give birth to modern art. Pablo Picasso was a Spanish artist who was born on October 25, 1881. Picasso wasn’t just a painter of his time, he was a painter and his talent didn’t just stop there. He was a sculptor, printmaker, stage designer, and ceramicist. Due to his amazing skills, he became an outstanding figure in all of these fields.
One of Pablo’s amazing achievements was showing realism and the surrounding culture through his art. Picasso along with another painter Georges Braque gave cubism birth. Cubism was a very unique art representing realism. Cubism was inspired due to the circumstances of the early 20th century.
Picasso’s immersion in art did not stop with cubism as he wanted to make something more inspirational and thus came into existence — Collage. Collage was a different kind of art in which Picasso mixed several signs and gave them a viable meaning.
Picasso received training from his father who himself was an art teacher and a painter as well. Just at the age of 16, Pablo had already lost a liking to traditional art techniques and he desired to introduce something new. His exploration began when he joined the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. That is when he came to know about his dislikeness of the traditional ways. He began to experiment with different styles of art.
With time, Picasso’s style continued to develop. He explored different grounds like still life. His work was bold and he always preferred to use innovative perspective. Picasso also did well in other forms of art. His most famous and politically charged work was “Guernica”. He produced this in response to the Spanish Civil War when the town of Guernica suffered a horrifying bombing. To this day, his work is a representation of war horrors.
On April 8, 1973, Picasso passed away in the city of Mougins, France. He left behind a legacy of art that is celebrated still to this day.

The World Health Organization warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. Nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating as well as lighting.
These findings show that the use of deadly fuels in inefficient stoves, space heaters or lights is to blame for many of these deaths.
WHO officials say indoor pollution leads to early deaths from stroke, heart and lung disease, childhood pneumonia and lung cancer. Women and girls are the main victims. These diseases can often result from the burning of solid fuels. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste, crop waste and charcoal.
The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of households in sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatemala and Peru, are also at risk.
Nigel Brace is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good cook-stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way. There are already multiple technologies available for use in clean fuels. There is really quite an effective and reasonably low-cost alcohol stove made by Dometic (a Sweden-based company) that is now being tested out. LPG (Liquefield Petroleum Gas) cook is obviously widely available and efforts are under way to make those efficient. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves. WHO experts note that some new, safe and low-cost technologies that could help are already available. In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8.00. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.00.
But this, the agency says, is just a start. It is urging developing countries to use cleaner fuels and increase access to cleaner and more modern cooking and heating appliances/devices.
28.What does the indoor pollution mainly result from?
A.Poisonous fuels. B.High technology.
C.Space heaters. D.Solar energy.
29.How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A.By showing differences. B.By describing a process.
C.By making a list. D.By analyzing data.
30.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Indoor pollution results in some deaths.
B.Most of the deaths are in developing countries.
C.The solid fuels are used in more effective ways.
D.There is no indoor pollution in developed countries.
31.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.LPG cooks are being tested out. B.Alcohol stoves are widely used now.
C.Electric induction stoves are expensive. D.Solar lamps are very cheap in Africa.

A new study has found that some of the hottest heatwaves in history happened a long time ago and were not well known. Scientists from the University of Bristol did this research and said that as our world gets warmer, we can expect even hotter heatwaves in the future.
The study found five very hot heatwaves that were not talked about much. Dr. Vikki Thompson, who led the study, said that the heatwave in Canada and the United States was very surprising, but there were even hotter ones in the past. She also said that using what we know about the climate, we can guess that very hot days will get more common in the next 100 years.
Heatwaves can cause a lot of problems. The one in western North America was very bad and caused many catastrophes. It also started big fires that damaged many things and ruined crops. People will remember this heatwave because it caused so much damage.
Even though the hottest places are not always the ones that have the biggest problems, they are often connected. Knowing more about the very hot days and where they happen can help protect the most vulnerable regions.
Professor Dann Mitchell, who also worked on the study, said that climate change is a big health problem for everyone on Earth. He pointed out that many heatwaves in places that are not very rich were not noticed. When a country gets very hot, it can cause many people to die, especially if the temperature is not normal for them.
The University of Bristol cares about the problems caused by climate change and wants to help fix them. In 2019, it was the first university in the UK to say that there is a climate emergency (紧急情况).
32.What can we expect about heatwaves in the future?
A.They will decrease in amount.
B.They will only affect certain regions.
C.They will have no impact on global health.
D.They will increase in degree over the coming century.
33.What does the underlined word “catastrophes” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Cuts in food production. B.Events resulting in great loss.
C.Activities held by government. D.Something important to environment.
34.Why is it important to understand where the hottest heatwaves have happened?
A.To predict where the next heatwave will happen.
B.To find the connection between heatwaves and crop yields.
C.To help take measures to protect the most vulnerable regions.
D.To determine which countries need to reduce their greenhouse gas.
35.What can we know from paragraph 5?
A.Climate change has had a great influence on health.
B.The heatwaves outside of the developed world are always noticed.
C.The death rate related to the climate change is expected to be lower.
D.Developing countries are warned of the influences of climate change.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Be a Green Child
What does it mean to be green? “Green” is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. What can we do? 36
Reduce It!
37 For instance, a shorter shower means you used less water and less fuel since your house uses to run the heater that warmed up the water.
Reuse It!
Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. It means that we’re a little too willing to throw away old things and buy new things. 38 For instance, if your baby brother becomes older and loses interest in his plastic basketball hoop (篮圈), why not give it to another family who has a little kid?
Recycle It!
Recycling has never been easier. Many communities will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require it. Recycled goods go to a recycling center, where they can be turned into new cans, bottles, and paper.
Enjoy It!
It’s true that rubbish and pollution are problems, but the Earth remains a huge and beautiful place that’s ready for you to explore. 39 Go for a hike, visit local nature centers and gardens, and climb up mountains.
But before you travel the globe, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a spot where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? 40
A.Read a book to have a good rest.
B.Here’s a four-step guide to being green.
C.Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth.
D.When you use less of something, you do a good thing for the Earth.
E.You can start locally by visiting the naturally beautiful spots in your city.
F.You can watch with pride as your tree takes root and your garden plants grow.
G.Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye?” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you?” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!
