For more than two decades, Isabella Ducrot, an artist who was born in Naples in 1931, has lived in an apartment in the center of Rome. When I knocked on her door this past spring, Ducrot, who is tall and upright, grasped my hand more firmly than I would have expected, saying, “I must tell you immediately that I have never been so happy in my life!”
Only in the past five years has Ducrot, who turned ninety-four in June, become internationally recognized for her art, which she didn’t even begin making until she was in her fifties. When creating her works, she stands and uses a brush sometimes attached to a stick, sweeping ink or paint onto paper. Typically made in series, her works are light, energetic, and beautiful. An Italian scholar writes that he, as well as many others, was amazed to discover that the creator of such delicate works is “a lady who is well over the age of eighty.” Of course, this reaction says as much about the limitations of the observer’s imagination as it does about the reaches of Ducrot’s.
Andrea Viliani, who will exhibit a selection of Ducrot’s works this summer, told me Ducrot is fortunate that her preferred methods and materials remain relatively easy for her to handle, compared with, say, sculpting metal or painting with oils on heavy canvases (画布). “Her work is easy to hold, easy to paint, and easy to store,” Viliani said. “It is very convenient that she chose something so soft.”
We tend to assign to the elderly the vague (模糊的) and often fading quality of wisdom, thus suggesting that their own creative and intellectual (智力的) growth has come to an end, and that their only role left is to give advice to others. Ducrot’s life offers an alternative possibility: an individual might keep wide-eyed and open to experience until the very end.
4. What does the author intend to show about Ducrot in paragraph 1?
A. Her wealth. B. Her talent. C. Her passion. D. Her reputation.
5. What does the Italian scholar’s reaction reveal?
A. He prefers delicate works. B. Ducrot’s works mask her age.
C. He has a sharp eye for art. D. Ducrot’s works limit his imagination.
6. What characterizes Ducrot’s technique?
A. Precision. B. Efficiency. C. Uniqueness. D. Manageability.
7. What message does Ducrot’s life convey to the elderly?
A. Ignoring the effects of aging. B. Restarting the growth of wisdom.
C. Remaining engaged with the world. D. Offering advice to next generations.
C 5. B 6. D 7. C
根据第一段中“When I knocked on her door this past spring, Ducrot, who is tall and upright, grasped my hand more firmly than I would have expected, saying, “I must tell you immediately that I have never been so happy in my life!” (今年春天我上门拜访时,身姿高挑挺拔的Ducrot,握手的力道比我预想的要有力得多,她说道:“我必须立刻告诉你,我这辈子从未像现在这般幸福!”)”可知,作者通过描述Ducrot紧紧地握住作者的手,并表达自己从未如此开心过,来展示Ducrot的热情。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“An Italian scholar writes that he, as well as many others, was amazed to discover that the creator of such delicate works is “a lady who is well over the age of eighty.” (一位意大利学者写道,他和许多其他人一样,惊讶地发现如此精致作品的创作者是“一位八十多岁的老太太”。)”可知,学者感到惊讶是因为作品看起来精致,但作者年龄很大,这说明意大利学者的反应揭示了Ducrot的作品掩盖了她的年龄。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Andrea Viliani, who will exhibit a selection of Ducrot’s works this summer, told me Ducrot is fortunate that her preferred methods and materials remain relatively easy for her to handle, compared with, say, sculpting metal or painting with oils on heavy canvases (画布). (今年夏天将为Ducrot举办作品精选展的Andrea Viliani告诉我, 相较于金属雕塑、在厚重画布上画油画这类创作形式,Ducrot很幸运,她所偏好的创作方式和材料对她来说依旧易于操作。)”以及“Her work is easy to hold, easy to paint, and easy to store (她的作品易于拿取、易于绘画、易于存放)”可知,Ducrot创作技术的特点是易于操作掌控。
根据最后一段中“Ducrot’s life offers an alternative possibility: an individual might keep wide-eyed and open to experience until the very end. (Ducrot的人生提供了另一种可能:一个人可以始终保持睁大眼睛,对体验保持开放,直到生命的最后一刻。)”可知,Ducrot的人生向老年人传递的信息是:始终拥抱生活、与世界保持联结。

Adults typically have 206 bones and 350 joints, which are made of bones plus the tissues that hold the bones together: cartilage (软骨), tendons (腱), ligaments (韧带), and nerves. With so many moving parts working hard every day, it’s no wonder that many people experience pain, stiffness (僵硬) or soreness in one or more of these connections.
The smallest joint in the body is in the ear, and while it plays a crucial role in hearing, most of us don’t even realize it’s there. The largest joint is the knee. Knees and other large joints like hips, shoulders and elbows are the ones that tend to become painful. We’re often quick to blame joint pain or stiffness on getting older. But it’s not just older folks who experience joint pain. Athletes and just plain everyday active people experience joint pain too. Besides aging, causes include overuse, inflammation (炎症), injury, and genetic or autoimmune conditions.
“It’s perfectly normal for people to have occasional aches and pains in their joints,” says Kyle Ruygrok, a physical therapist with Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine &Rehabilitation in Houston. “Most problems in the joints are either from injury or overuse.” And, he adds, many of those problems can be relieved simply by resting the following day to allow for recovery.
When pain lasts longer, doctors have a variety of ways to treat it, depending on where and why it occurs and how severe it is. The first recommendations may be supportive tools like canes, braces and splints (夹板) to help reduce strain and prevent falls from achy knees and hips. Smaller aids — for arthritic finger joints, for instance — can include special jar openers, ring splints or voice-to-text software to avoid typing. Your doctor may also recommend anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) or an injection to help relieve pain.
Physical therapy is another valuable option for rebuilding strength and mobility, particularly after an injury or arthritis diagnosis. Ruygrok recommends considering it if your joint pain hasn’t improved after four to six weeks.
“When these measures no longer provide relief, and joint pain begins to significantly impact your daily activities, that’s when we typically start discussing surgical options,” says Nicolas Noiseux, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at University of Iowa Health Care.
8. What is the function of the first 2 paragraphs?
A. To explain how joints are formed.
B. To describe the structure of bones in detail.
C. To list all the possible treatments for joint inflammation.
D. To compare different joints and challenge a common misconception about pain.
9. According to Kyle Ruygrok, when should one consider physical therapy?
A. Immediately after the pain starts. B. Only after an injection has failed.
C. When surgery is not an available option. D. If the pain hasn’t improved after 4-6 weeks.
10. What can we learn about surgical treatment for joint pain from the text?
A. It is the first option doctors will recommend.
B. It is mainly used to treat occasional joint aches.
C. It is considered when other treatments are ineffective.
D. It is only applicable to large joints like knees and hips.
11. What does the text try to convey?
A. The knee is the most important joint in the human body.
B. Joint pain has diverse causes and a graduated way to treat.
C. Daily activities can not significantly influenced by joint pain.
D. Surgery is the only effective way to relieve long-time joint pain.
D 9. D 10. C 11. B

根据第一段“Adults typically have 206 bones and 350 joints, which are made of bones plus the tissues that hold the bones together: cartilage (软骨), tendons (腱), ligaments (韧带), and nerves. With so many moving parts working hard every day, it’s no wonder that many people experience pain, stiffness (僵硬) or soreness in one or more of these connections.(成年人通常有206块骨头和350个关节,关节由骨头以及将骨头连接在一起的组织构成:软骨、腱、韧带和神经。有这么多活动部位每天都在努力工作,难怪很多人会在一个或多个这些连接处感到疼痛、僵硬或酸痛)”和第二段“The smallest joint in the body is in the ear, and while it plays a crucial role in hearing, most of us don’t even realize it’s there.
根据第五段“Physical therapy is another valuable option for rebuilding strength and mobility, particularly after an injury or arthritis diagnosis. Ruygrok recommends considering it if your joint pain hasn’t improved after four to six weeks.(物理治疗是重建力量和活动能力的另一个有价值的选择,尤其是在受伤或被诊断出关节炎之后。鲁伊格罗克建议,如果你的关节疼痛在四到六周后仍未改善,可以考虑物理治疗)”可知,Kyle Ruygrok认为,如果关节疼痛在4到6周后仍未改善,就应该考虑物理治疗。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段““When these measures no longer provide relief, and joint pain begins to significantly impact your daily activities, that’s when we typically start discussing surgical options,” says Nicolas Noiseux, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at University of Iowa Health Care.(爱荷华大学医疗保健中心的骨科外科医生尼古拉斯·努瓦约克斯医学博士说:“当这些措施不再能缓解疼痛,且关节疼痛开始严重影响你的日常活动时,我们通常就会开始讨论手术选项。”)”

What if we could fight farm weeds with a precise strike instead of blanket chemicals? This vision is now becoming a reality in the farmlands of China. The HG LaserWeederr, a new machine developed by Huagong Tech, marks a major breakthrough in precision agriculture by making targeted weed control a practical reality.
This advancement responds directly to the persistent problems associated with traditional farming. Decades of heavy reliance on chemical herbicides (除草剂) have caused significant environmental harm, including soil degradation and water pollution. For China, a nation with vast agricultural lands, finding a sustainable solution is a matter of particular urgency.
So, how does this “robot farmer” work? At its core, it combines artificial intelligence with advanced light technology. Its AI-powered visual system, trained on a vast database of plant images, acts as a smart “eye” that can distinguish weeds from crops in milliseconds. Once a weed is spotted, the robot delivers a precise laser beam (激光束) to each weed’s growth center, destroying key cells and causing the plant to die naturally, all without harming the surrounding crops or the soil.
The advantages of this approach are substantial. In terms of efficiency, an advanced model equipped with 32 laser heads can destroy up to 320,000 weeds per hour, which is four to eight times more efficient than traditional methods. Through continuous operation, it achieves a weed control rate of over 95%, far outperforming hand weeding and obviating the need for this back-breaking task. Ecologically, it significantly reduces the use of chemicals, thereby cutting off a primary source of agricultural pollution.
The introduction of this technology is part of a broader shift toward automated and sustainable agriculture in China and abroad. As farms worldwide seek to enhance efficiency while minimizing environmental impact, robotic solutions like the Hg LaserWeeder are likely to become increasingly common. This technology signals a move toward precision agriculture, where data-driven tools enable farmers to manage their crops with greater accuracy and less dependence on chemicals, pointing the way for a cleaner, more efficient future for farming.
12. What is the main factor behind the development of the Hg LaserWeeder?
A. The shortage of clean water. B. The vast farmlands in China.
C. The pollution from chemicals. D. The failing power of herbicides.
13. What is the main role of the visual system in the Hg LaserWeeder?
A. To deliver laser beams. B. To protect nearby crops.
C. To capture plant images. D. To identify target weeds.
14. What does the underlined word “obviating” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Facing. B. Removing. C. Sharing. D. Delaying.
15. What can we infer about future agriculture from the last paragraph?
A. It will rely more on smart robotic tools.
B. It will witness more global cooperation.
C. It will prioritize environment over yields.
D. It will improve the social status of farmers.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A

For China, a nation with vast agricultural lands, finding a sustainable solution is a matter of particular urgency.(几十年来,对化学除草剂的严重依赖已经对环境造成了重大危害,包括土壤退化和水污染。
根据第三段中的“Its AI-powered visual system, trained on a vast database of plant images, acts as a smart “eye” that can distinguish weeds from crops in milliseconds.(其人工智能视觉系统基于庞大的植物图像数据库进行训练,就像一只智能“眼睛”,能在毫秒内区分杂草和作物。)”
根据第四段中的“Through continuous operation, it achieves a weed control rate of over 95%, far outperforming hand weeding and obviating the need for this back-breaking task.(经持续作业,其除草率超95%,效果远超人工除草,并且obviating了这项繁重劳作的需求。)”
根据最后一段中的“As farms worldwide seek to enhance efficiency while minimizing environmental impact, robotic solutions like the Hg LaserWeeder are likely to become increasingly common. This technology signals a move toward precision agriculture, where data-driven tools enable farmers to manage their crops with greater accuracy and less dependence on chemicals, pointing the way for a cleaner, more efficient future for farming.(随着全球农场寻求在提高效率的同时尽量减少对环境的影响,像Hg LaserWeeder这样的机器人解决方案可能会越来越普遍。这项技术标志着向精准农业的转变,数据驱动的工具使农民能够更精确地管理作物,减少对化学物质的依赖,为更清洁、更高效的农业未来指明了方向。)”可推知,未来的农业将更多地依赖智能机器人工具。

Bathrooms are naturally damp and steamy. Even with regular cleaning, moisture stays around. Among work, family, and a social life, cleaning every wall hard daily is almost impossible. ____16____
Recently, a friend noticed yellow stuff falling down her bathroom walls. Naturally, I panicked and wanted answers fast. ____17____ Its tiny particles float through the air and settle in damp spots. Once there, mold spreads rapidly.
____18____ Certain types can cause allergic reactions, breathing issues, and long-lasting health problems if left unchecked. Bathrooms, with their constant moisture, are prime breeding grounds. Mold grows well in warm, damp conditions. After a shower, steam turns to water on walls and ceilings. Even with good airflow, moisture doesn’t go away. Mold often starts in corners or near pipe parts, then spreads quickly if ignored.
The key to prevention is controlling moisture. Let fresh air into your bathroom by opening a window or running an exhaust fan during and after showers. Dry surfaces regularly, especially those likely to get water drops. If mold already appears, act fast. ____19____ For hard-to-remove mold or chemical sensitivities, vinegar and a hydrogen-based cleaning liquid are safer choices. Always wear gloves and a mask to protect your skin and lungs.
Keeping your bathroom clean and dry is the best defense. Let fresh air in regularly, clean frequently, and consider a machine that reduces dampness in damp areas. ____20____ By taking these simple steps, you can keep moisture and mold well under control. Always keep in mind that maintaining a clean environment ensures a healthy home for everyone.
A. Mold (霉菌) isn’t just ugly — it’s dangerous.
B. Mold grows wherever moisture meets organic matter.
C. Wipe surfaces sometimes, especially areas easy to get wet.
D. And that’s exactly when mold takes the opportunity to grow.
E. If the problem gets out of hand, calling professionals is wise.
F. For surfaces that don’t absorb water, a bleach and water mix works well.
G. Proper ventilation (通风) can prevent the basement from becoming too moist and moldy.
D 17. B 18. A 19. F 20. E

Judy tapped “join” on the screen, her only motivation being the extra credits. “If you join the speech contest, you will gain five,” she told her friend Leo, who was lazily leaning against the wall. “Easy points,” Leo laughed, thinking a speech was just a collection of beautiful words.
To save time, Judy fed the topic “My Hero” to an AI tool. Within thirty seconds, a polished text appeared: Newton, Lincoln, Tesla... The stories of virtually any famous person came alive with perfect sentences. She printed it out, feeling satisfied with this neat yet shallow, fancy article. To her, it was a quick way to win without much effort.
However, the rehearsal (彩排) was a total disaster. Under the bright stage lights, she struggled to recall the long, difficult sentences. The words felt like borrowed clothes that didn’t fit. Coach Kim frowned, his eyes full of disappointment. “Good voice, Judy, but where is your heart? These aren’t your heroes.” Judy forced a smile, but the coach’s words stayed in her mind all afternoon.
That night, the familiar rattle (哐当声) of metal wheels woke her up. Looking out of the window, she saw her parents pushing their food cart (小推车) into the cold darkness. Dad whispered, “Fog’s thick. Gloves ready?” Mom answered, “Always.” Watching their fading figures, Judy felt a sharp pang in her heart. Suddenly, the “heroes” in her AI-generated text seemed so far away, while the true heroes were right here in the cold wind.
She sat at her laptop, deleted every word of the AI text, and typed: “My heroes leave at 4 am, so the city can eat at 7 am.” She wrote about the worn-out gloves and the smell of steaming hot dogs. The words were plain, but they breathed with true love.
The contest day finally came. Judy stood behind the curtain, legs shaking. Her parents sat in the third row, still wearing their faded work jackets. Judy pressed her handwritten speech to her chest, felt her heart pounding heavily, and whispered: “Stay calm.”

Then came Judy’s turn. Stepping onto the bright stage, Judy took a deep breath and looked straight at her parents. Instead of reciting stiff fancy sentences, she spoke softly and sincerely. She shared how her parents stuck to their food cart every early morning, braving cold wind and thick fog to bring warmth to others. Her plain but heartfelt words flowed naturally. Tears welled up in her eyes as she talked about their hard work and silent dedication. The whole audience listened quietly, totally touched by her genuine story.
After two seconds’ silence, thunderous applause erupted. Everyone stood up, cheering for her moving speech. Judy spotted her parents clapping warmly with tearful smiles, their eyes filled with pride. Coach Kim nodded in approval, clearly impressed by her sincere performance. Judy finally understood that true speeches lie in real feelings rather than fancy AI words. True heroes are ordinary people who stick to their duties and bring warmth to life.

C
