The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center."
Don't leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It's delicious." 故选A。

根据第三段"trouble began when they started the climb down. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move."
Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents but Jeremy still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone on such a cold windy night. Jeremy used his jacket to keep Ian warm and they rested together through the night." 故选A。
At sunrise, Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, they started the long climb back to the campsite. Jeremy carried Ian on his back."
故选A。

So do the cave paintings in southern Africa." A项"欧洲绘画不如非洲古老"与原文"painting in Africa is as old as that in Europe"矛盾;C项"澳大利亚人比欧洲人晚"与原文不符;D项"大多简单绘制"与原文"show a high degree of skill"矛盾。故选B。
根据第二段"the researchers identified three principal locations of paintings in the caves of western Europe: in obviously inhabited rock shelters and cave entrances; in galleries near the inhabited areas of caves"可知,画廊位于靠近洞穴有人居住区域的地方。故选A。
The subjects of the paintings are mostly animals. The paintings rest on bare walls, with no decoration."
根据最后一段"in the paintings there are mostly animals that the painters may have feared the most because of their size, speed, natural weapons such as horns. That is, mammoths were drawn more often than deer."

Part of the reason is that there's just not enough online data in those languages for the AI systems to effectively learn how to get better at understanding them."
Considering our history, some of the bias is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way"可知,他认为部分偏见是故意的,对科技巨头持不满(dissatisfied)态度。
故选A。

故填are understood。

On Christmas morning, my wife noticed it first."(圣诞节的早晨,我妻子第一个注意到了它。)
Then, something strange happened. The clock began to chime—on the hour, I stopped. Finally realizing I was hearing my own small Christmas miracle early, I stopped preparing the gifts. I sat on my couch and listened. I listened to the seconds and minutes tick by. I listened to my Christmas miracle tick away. Afraid that the magic would be gone when I woke up, I reluctantly went to bed striving to hear the ticking. There, on the mantle, the clock sat. Ticking. Chiming.
On Christmas morning, my wife noticed it first. "What? How? Did you have it fixed? What did you do?" I smiled with tears in my eyes and told her I tried to fix it not long ago but failed. It was really a miracle that it worked again at Christmas! My children noticed the ticking and chiming and told me all about how Santa must have come and fixed the clock as he came down the chimney. Later that day, my parents came over for Christmas dinner and marveled at the miracle. The Christmas miracle was trying to tell me to cherish every moment and to tell me that it is never too late for hope.
第一段从"stopped preparing the gifts"到"sit on my couch and listened",动作描写自然流畅。
There, on the mantle, the clock sat. Not ticking. Not chiming. For more than a year."在续写中被巧妙呼应——"There, on the mantle, the clock sat. Ticking. Chiming."
"I smiled with tears in my eyes"——
"Afraid that the magic would be gone when I woke up, I reluctantly went to bed"——
"The Christmas miracle was trying to tell me to cherish every moment and to tell me that it is never too late for hope."——
"never too late for hope"与原文中作者对母亲说的话"at least it will be right twice a day"形成情感上的递进——从幽默的无奈到深刻的希望。
"tick away"(滴答流逝)、"striving to hear"(努力倾听)、"marveled at"(惊叹于)等表达生动地道。
Chiming.")

English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you'll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It's also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a "must explore" medieval stronghold. The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers are everywhere---hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters---just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven't been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you've probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor-side markets. Don't leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It's delicious.
21. Where can you find an original copy of the Magna Carta?
A. In the Ludlow Castle.
B. In the Foodie Center of England.
C. In the Hereford Cathedral.
D. In the Black and White House Museum.
22. What is a feature of Shrewsbury Town Center?
A. It's situated near a big island.
B. It's almost surrounded by water.
C. It's known for its flower festival.
D. It's easily accessible from London.
23. What does the author suggest visitors do in Mevagissey?
A. Try the Cornish pie.
B. Watch a British TV show.
C. Go fishing in the sea.
D. Take pictures of the harbor.

How far would you go to help a friend? Jeremy Savage and Ian Marshall had their friendship tested to the limit on a recent trip to the Rocky Mountains with their parents.
On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb a mountain nearby on their own. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help but he did not want to leave his friend. He cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian's face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian's right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come.
Meanwhile, as darkness started to fall, their parents back at the campsite became very worried about the boys. They called park workers and began searching for the boys.
While waiting for help, Jeremy gave Ian his food and let him lie on his jacket. As the evening grew darker and the temperature dropped, Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents but Jeremy still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone on such a cold windy night. Jeremy used his jacket to keep Ian warm and they rested together through the night.
At sunrise, Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, they started the long climb back to the campsite. Jeremy carried Ian on his back. Finally, after four long and tiring hours, they came across their relieved parents, who were still looking for them on the mountain. "I will always remember what Jeremy did for me," said Ian afterwards. "He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend."
24. What happened when Jeremy and Ian started the climb down?

27. What words can best describe Jeremy?

The earliest discovered cave paintings date back to the Upper Paleolithic period. We might expect that they would be simply made, but the cave paintings of Spain and southern France show a high degree of skill. So do the cave paintings in southern Africa. Some of those appear to have been painted as much as 28,000 years ago, which suggests that painting in Africa is as old as that in Europe. The early Australians may have painted on the walls of rock shelters at least 30,000 years ago.
The researchers identified three principal locations of paintings in the caves of western Europe: in obviously inhabited rock shelters and cave entrances; in galleries near the inhabited areas of caves, and in the inner reaches of caves, whose difficulty of access has been considered as a sign that magical religious activities were performed there.
The subjects of the paintings are mostly animals. The paintings rest on bare walls, with no decoration. Perhaps, like many contemporary peoples, Upper Paleolithic men believed that the drawing of a human image could cause death or injury, and if that was their belief, it might explain why human figures are rarely found in cave art. Another explanation for the focus on animals might be that these people sought to improve their luck at hunting.
The particular symbolic significance of the cave paintings in southwestern France is more clearly revealed by the results of a study. The data suggest that the animals in the cave paintings were mostly the ones that the painters preferred for meat. For example, wild cattle and horses are found more often than we would expect by chance, probably because they were larger and heavier meatier than other animals in the environment. In addition, in the paintings there are mostly animals that the painters may have feared the most because of their size, speed, natural weapons such as horns. That is, mammoths were drawn more often than deer.
28. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Painting in Europe is not so old as that in southern Africa.
B. The cave paintings in southern Africa reflect ancient people's super skill.
C. The early Australians drew cave paintings later than the early Europeans.
D. Most of the cave paintings of Spain and southern France were simply drawn.
29. Where can we find galleries in western Europe?
A. Close to the inhabited areas of caves.
B. In the inner reaches of caves.
C. In a place too far from caves.
D. At cave entrances.
30. What does the third paragraph reveal about the cave paintings?
A. The subjects mainly include plants and animals.
B. Human figures are usually found in cave art.
C. The paintings were drawn on bare walls.
D. They were carefully and well decorated.
31. Which might NOT be the reason why mammoths were often drawn in the paintings?
A. They were very fast.
B. They were quite large.
C. They were rather tasty.
D. They had natural weapons.

Computers have become amazingly exact at translating spoken words to text messages and searching a large supply of valuable information for answers to difficult questions. At least, that is, so long as you speak English or other world's main languages. But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.
American tech giants don't have a long history of making their language technology work well outside the wealthiest markets, a problem that has also made it harder for them to discover dangerous misinformation on their platforms. Google, for instance, upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. Part of the reason is that there's just not enough online data in those languages for the AI systems to effectively learn how to get better at understanding them.
"We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your language, it will be like it never existed," said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his AI research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. "Considering our history, some of the bias is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way," Marivate added.
However, Google and Microsoft are among the companies that say they are trying to improve technology for so-called "low-resource" languages that AI systems don't have enough data for. Computer scientists at Meta announced a breakthrough on the path to a "universal translator" that could translate multiple languages at once and work better with lower-resourced languages. Meanwhile, Marivate and other researchers have founded a research project across Africa. Increasingly, people are joining hands to develop a variety of language approaches.
32. What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
A. Yoruba and Igbo are widely spoken in the world.
B. English speakers fail to access online information.
C. The online data of African languages is limited.
D. Computers can translate all text messages exactly.
33. Why does the author mention "Google" in Paragraph 2?
A. To make a prediction.
B. To draw a comparison.
C. To reach a conclusion.
D. To give an example.
34. What is Marivate's attitude towards "American tech giants"?
A. Friendly. B. Unconcerned. C. Dissatisfied. D. Proud.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Joint Efforts to Improve AI in African Languages
B. Computers Good at Translating Spoken Language
C. US Tech Giants Misunderstand African Languages
D. African Researchers Exchange Ideas with Tech Giants

People have all turned to sad music to make themselves feel better at some point in their lives, ___56___ why does the music with double or even triple sadness help drag people out of low spirits?
A new study throws light on what's going on inside people's brains when they match their music to their feelings, and it looks as if sad music can be enjoyable, rather than ___57___ (simple) depressing. Music of this sort can arouse positive memories in people's life, thus ___58___ (lift) their mood.
Psychologist Adrian North from Curtin University in Australia says there exist two groups of possible ___59___ (explain) for why people enjoy listening to sad music like this---one from social psychology, and the other from cognitive neuroscience.
___60___ terms of social psychology, one idea about this is that people will feel ___61___ (good) about themselves if they focus on someone who's doing even worse. Everything's going to be okay, because this person is having ___62___ even worse day than they are.
Another idea from social psychology is that people like to listen to the very music ___63___ shows their present life circumstances, because this kind of music makes them feel they ___64___ (understand). With their emotions ___65___ (share), they definitely get a certain amount of comfort.
So, the conclusion again-sad music does cheer people up, and it works far better than happy music in most cases.

The clock was one of the few things that survived after both of my parents lost their jobs. The clock survived several years packed away in the attic of my grandparents' house.
Gradually, life got better. Mom took the clock out of the box once after she and Dad had bought their first home. She dusted it off, placed it on top of a bookcase in the new living room, and wound it. The clock would not tick. It would not chime. "Maybe," she said with tears in her eyes, "it's been too long." She placed it back in the box, and stored it in her attic.
There, in the attic, the clock sat. Not ticking. Not chiming. For years.
In those years I finished high school, then college. I got married. I was blessed with the two most beautiful children, almost 2 and 4. I bought a house with a fireplace and a mantle.
Mom came over to our new house with a box. "I had the clock fixed. Oh, you'll love it!" she said to my wife. "It had the most beautiful chime." Mom took the clock out of the box and placed it on our mantle. She wound the clock.
The chime of my childhood was back. And the chime really was beautiful.
There, on the mantle, the clock sat. Ticking. Chiming. For months.
Then, one day, the clock stopped ticking and chiming.
With tears in her eyes, Mom wanted to store the clock in the box. "No," I said, "we'll leave it sitting right there. That clock is too beautiful to live in a box." I offered up a lame joke, "And, anyway, at least it will be right twice a day."
There, on the mantle, the clock sat. Not ticking. Not chiming. For more than a year.
Now it was late. Very late. It was Christmas time. I continued to be busy helping Santa prepare Christmas gifts.
Then, something strange happened.

On Christmas morning, my wife noticed it first.
