John Cruitt, 62, spent decades tracking down his third-grade teacher.
He wanted to talk with Cecile Doyle about 1958 — the year his mother, who was seriously ill, passed away.
Her death came just days before Christmas. Cruitt had been expecting to go home from school and decorate the Christmas tree.
Doyle tells Cruitt at StoryCorps in Monroe, N. Y. “And you just don’t know how you’re going to go on without that person.”
When Cruitt returned to school, Doyle waited until all of the other children left the room at the end of the day, and told him that she was there if he needed her.
“Then you kissed me on the head,” Cruitt says. “And I felt that things really would be OK.”
“Well, Cruitt, I’m so glad that I could be there with you for that time,” says Doyle, 82.
Decades after his mother’s death, Cruitt began to think more and more of Doyle. He finally wrote a letter:
Dear Mrs. Doyle,
If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. My name is John Cruitt, and I was in your third-grade class during the 1958-1959 school year. Two days before Christmas, my mother passed away, and you told me that you were there if I needed you. I hope life has been as kind to you as you were to me.
God bless you.
John Cruitt
Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. Her husband, who passed away this August, was struggling with Parkinson’s disease.
“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter — I was afraid my penmanship wasn’t going to meet your standards,” Cruitt says as Doyle laughs.
“John, what can I say — I’m just glad that we made a difference in each other’s life.”
16.Before Cruitt wrote the letter, he ________.
A.knew Doyle’s husband had passed away
B.believed Doyle was leading a happy life
C.considered it embarrassing to write to Doyle
D.was unsure whether Doyle could receive the letter
17.Doyle believed the letter ________.
A.was a gift coming late
B.came at just the right time
C.lifted her confidence greatly
D.served as a reminder of her husband

If just seeing someone take up two parking spots makes your blood boil, or you lie in bed each night replaying in your mind that someone took credit for your hard work, you know how difficult it is to let go of a grudge. Holding a complaint can somehow bring a strange sense of satisfaction, as if you’re proving that you’ve been unfairly wronged by others.
However, unresolved hurt can be emotionally tiring, and forgiveness, when it is safe and appropriate, may help loosen some of that stress. A new study shows that being a forgiving kind benefits both your body and mind. The researchers investigated “dispositional forgiveness” — a person’s forgiving nature. Being high in it seems to give you an edge on many fronts, including psychological well-being, purpose in life, relationship satisfaction and hope.
What happens in your brain when you get past a hurt? Brain imaging studies show its powerful and fast-acting effects: Letting go of an offense activates pathways and parts of the brain that improve resilience (恢复力) to adversity and social bonds, according to a study review in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews.
The good news is that anyone can learn this vital skill — being forgiving. How? To begin with, understand that the real reason you hold onto hurt is that you’re disappointed with how something turned out. As Fred Luskin, director of the Stanford Forgiveness Projects, puts it, “I’d heard similar stories that amounted to. I had this picture of how it was supposed to go, and then this other thing happened, and I couldn’t forgive that difference’. Forgiveness is about accepting life’s imperfections, making peace with the world telling you ‘no’.”
Some people find it much harder to forgive others, especially self-centered people and those with very reactive nervous systems that get fired up quickly. “Forgiveness often unfolds gradually, rather than all at once,” Scientist Richard Cowden notes. “It may help to think of it as a muscle that can be built with practice.”
19.What does the underlined word “grudge” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.A cruel punishment. B.A past mistake.
C.A sense of relief. D.A feeling of anger.
20.What effect does forgiveness have on the brain?
A.It helps build the defense against life’s hardships.
B.It reduces the activity of negative brain pathways.
C.It slows down the reaction of the nervous system.
D.It improves the ability to make immediate decision.
21.What prevents people from forgiving according to Fred Luskin?
A.Their refusal to admit their own mistakes.
B.Their discontent with the unmet expectation.
C.Their lack of trust in other people’s good will.
D.Their fear of suffering from similar hurt again.
22.What does Richard Cowden say about forgiveness?
A.It emerges quickly. B.It uses little energy.
C.It can be trained gradually. D.It belongs to certain people.

We all know the feeling: your heart races, your palms sweat, and your mind goes blank just before a big test. This is anxiety (焦虑). While often seen as negative, psychologists now argue that anxiety is not your enemy — if you know how to reframe (重新看待) it.
Dr. Lisa Damour, a psychologist, explains that anxiety is simply the body’s way of preparing for a challenge. The physical symptoms — increased heart rate, rapid breathing — are actually your body delivering oxygen to your brain and muscles. “Anxiety feels exactly like excitement,” Dr. Damour says. “The only difference is what we tell ourselves about the feeling.”
A study from the University of Rochester supported this. Researchers asked students who were nervous about a math test to say “I am excited” out loud before the exam. The students who did this scored 8% higher on average than those who said “I am calm” or said nothing. Why? Because telling yourself you are excited converts (转变) the stress response into a performance-boosting state.
However, experts warn that this only works for manageable (可控制的) stress. If anxiety becomes so severe that it stops you from sleeping or studying, it is a sign that you need to seek help from a teacher or a doctor.
So, the next time you feel nervous before a presentation or an exam, don’t try to fight it. Instead, take a deep breath, smile, and whisper to yourself: “I am excited to do this.”
23.What happens to your body when you feel anxious according to the text?
A.It shuts down to save energy. B.It gets ready to face a difficulty.
C.It loses the ability to think clearly. D.It produces less oxygen.
24.Why did the students who said “I am excited” perform better?
A.They were more confident about math. B.They changed how they understood their stress.
C.They were calmer than the other group. D.They studied harder before the test.
25.What does Dr. Lisa Damour think about anxiety?
A.It is always harmful to students. B.It should be completely avoided.
C.It is similar to excitement in physical feeling. D.It can only be solved by taking medicine.
26.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Danger of Exam Stress B.How to Keep Calm All the Time
C.Turn Your Fear into Fuel D.The Best Ways to Study for a Test

The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy.
Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.
Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it’s for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling.
Anyway, adding humor, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.
27.What does the underlined word “infectious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Playing an important role. B.Keeping people in high spirits.
C.Quickly influencing other people. D.Preventing illness from spreading.
28.What can laughter increase according to the author?
A.Cognitive ability. B.Good relationships.
C.A sense of humor. D.Happiness and trust.
29.What does the author think the old should do?
A.They should have a good rest.
B.They should play like children.
C.They should prevent cognitive falling.
D.They should take part in physical play.
30.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Humor, Laughter and Play for Health B.Always Keep Our Body Healthy
C.Have an Active and Happy Life D.Let Our Body and Mind Relax
E
We can all relate to being criticized (批评) and then feeling terrible. There is not a single one of us who feels happy from being criticized. 31 Next time you are communicating with someone who is criticizing you, here are some ways to try.
Stay calm. I know that your heart may be beating rapidly and your palms (手心) may become sweaty but you must breathe deeply and appear calm. 32 You will get to the next several steps only if you can achieve it. Keep breathing deeply.
Listen. Before you start responding, let the person finish saying what they need to say. 33 Remain quiet until you finish listening. It is only when you have heard the person out that you can think about what they have said. Take a moment to prepare your response.
Buy yourself some time. Tell the person who has just criticized you that you need time to think about what they have said. If the person offering the criticism to you is important to you and you are not sure how to respond, then give yourself some time. Tell them that you will get back to them because you need 24 hours to think about this. 34 Don’t we?
35 Think about whether there are any positive messages in the communication. Perhaps the person who is telling the thoughts cares so deeply about you that they truly want you to be the best kind of yourself. Keep in mind that there may be something good going on here and try to find what that may be and see what you can learn.
A.Think positively.
B.Find out the purpose.
C.If you don’t, you will just make things worse.
D.Staying calm is always better than getting upset.
E.This gives you something to work with and think about.
F.But we can learn to deal with criticism effectively with the right way.
G.This is very helpful because we often feel differently about communication later on.

Sita had always known her mother was a wonderful cook. Being from a traditional Mangalorean family, food had always been at the heart of their home. She loved watching Mom cook delicious Mangalorean dishes: traditional dosas (多萨饼), mango curry and the sweetest of delicacies (精美的食物).
One day, while cleaning out a drawer in the kitchen, Sita came across something she had never seen before — a small worn-out notebook. Curious, she opened it. It was filled with handwritten recipes (食谱), but what caught her attention were the notes beside each one — small stories, memories and unfamiliar names. This was no ordinary recipe book. It was a secret.
“Mom, what’s this?” Sita asked, holding up the notebook.
Her mother, busy preparing dinner, paused for a moment. “Ah, that’s my secret recipe book,” she said. “It holds recipes from my mother and grandmother — all kinds of traditional Mangalorean dishes. Some of them are family favorites, passed down through generations.”
Sita’s eyes widened, “Why didn’t you ever tell me about this?”
Her mother smiled, “Well, now that you’re interested, maybe it’s time for you to learn some of these.”
Sita nodded eagerly. She decided to cook one of the recipes for Dad and Mom this evening — her grandmother’s famous mango buns, a dish created based on dosas and often served at family reunions (聚会) and special occasions. As she gathered the ingredients (食材), Sita read the notes written on the margins (空白处). “This dish can bring anyone closer. It was made in happy times and moments of comfort. Always make it with love.”
“Mom, did you have any idea how important this recipe was?” Sita asked. “To me, it’s more than just food,” her mother smiled. “Food carries memories, Sita. Every dish tells a story. Your grandmother got this recipe from her childhood friend, who brought mango buns as treats when your grandmother gave birth to me. Later, your grandmother made them for me when you were born. These buns are a part of our story.”

续写词数应为 150 个左右;

18.The underlined word “penmanship” probably means “________”.
A.pen repairer B.pen friend C.handwriting D.biography
根据John Cruitt写信的第一句“If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. (如果你不是在新泽西州科尔尼的爱默生学校教英语的Cecile Doyle,那么我很尴尬,你可以忽略这封信。) ”可推知John Cruitt写信的时候不确定Doyle是否能收到这封信,故选D。
17.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. (Doyle说,他的这封信是在2月份收到的,来得正是时候。)”可知Doyle相信这封信来的正是时候,故选B。
18.词义猜测题。根据上文“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter (好吧,有趣的是,当我54年后终于再次给你写信时,我把信打了出来)”可推断出下文意思是“我担心我的书写达不到你的标准”所以penmanship意思是“书写”,和handwriting同义,故选C。

【答案】19.D 20.A 21.B 22.C
根据上文“If just seeing someone take up two parking spots makes your blood boil, or you lie in bed each night replaying in your mind that someone took credit for your hard work,(只要看到有人一个车占两个停车位就让你怒火中烧,或是每晚躺在床上反复回想:别人抢走了你辛苦付出的功劳)”可知,上文列举了让人愤怒的两件事:别人霸占两个停车位、窃取自己的劳动成果,这两件事让人们明白放下心中的怨恨有多难。
根据第三段“Letting go of an offense activates pathways and parts of the brain that improve resilience (恢复力) to adversity and social bonds.(放下他人的冒犯行为,会激活大脑的神经通路与相关区域,从而增强人的逆境抗压能力,并促进人际交往联结。)”
根据第四段“To begin with, understand that the real reason you hold onto hurt is that you’re disappointed with how something turned out.(首先要明白,你一直放不下伤痛的真正原因,是你对事情最终的结局感到失望。)”和“I had this picture of how it was supposed to go, and then this other thing happened, and I couldn’t forgive that difference.(我原本预想事情本该是某种发展走向,结果却发生了完全不一样的状况,而我始终无法释怀这种落差。)”
根据第五段““Forgiveness often unfolds gradually, rather than all at once,” Scientist Richard Cowden notes. “It may help to think of it as a muscle that can be built with practice.”(科学家理查德・考登指出:“宽恕往往是慢慢释怀的,而非一蹴而就。不妨把它看作一块肌肉,勤加练习就能慢慢练就。”)”可知,宽恕可以循序渐进训练习得。
C
Lisa Damour, a psychologist, explains that anxiety is simply the body’s way of preparing for a challenge. (心理学家Lisa Damour解释说,焦虑只是身体为挑战做准备的一种方式。)”可知,当人感到焦虑时,身体会为面对困难做好准备。故选B。
24.细节理解题。根据第三段“Because telling yourself you are excited converts (转变) the stress response into a performance-boosting state. (因为告诉自己你很兴奋,会将压力反应转变为提升表现的状态。)”可知,说“我很兴奋”的学生表现更好,是因为他们改变了对压力的理解方式。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段““Anxiety feels exactly like excitement,” Dr. Damour says.
D
【答案】27.C 28.B 29.D 30.A
根据第二段“Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness.(你有没有听过一个小孩的大笑,并且能让自己不笑?当人们之间分享笑声时,它使他们彼此更加亲密,并增加他们的幸福感。)”可知,别人大笑,你也会忍不住笑,人们之间分享笑声,这说明笑具有感染力,故画线词意为“迅速影响他人的”。
28.细节理解题。根据第二段“When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness.(当人与人之间共享笑声时,会使他们彼此更亲近,增加他们的幸福感)”可知,根据作者的说法,笑能使人们彼此更亲近,即能增进人际关系。
根据第三段中“However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it’s for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness.(然而,我们经常忘记的是,对于老人来说,让游戏成为他们生活的一部分就像对孩子一样重要。体育运动对老年人来说很重要,它当然有助于预防疾病)”可知,作者认为老年人应该参加体育活动。
30.主旨大意题。根据第一段“The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy.(你可以用幽默、笑声和玩耍来让你更健康,这个想法似乎太过简单,不真实。然而,这是真实和简单的。幽默感、笑声和玩乐在保持你的健康中起着重要的作用)”结合文章主要论述了笑给人带来的好处和积极作用。故A选项“幽默、欢笑和玩耍有益于健康”最符合文章标题。

【答案】31.F 32.D 33.C 34.G 35.A
上文“There is not a single one of us who feels happy from being criticized.(没有人会因为被批评而感到开心。)” F“But we can learn to deal with criticism effectively with the right way.(但我们可以掌握正确方法,学会高效应对批评。)”转折过渡,引出下文“Next time you are communicating with someone who is criticizing you, here are some ways to try.(下次当你与批评你的人交流时,可以尝试以下几种方式。)”
32.上文“I know that your heart may be beating rapidly and your palms (手心) may become sweaty but you must breathe deeply and appear calm.(我知道你的心跳可能很快,手掌可能会出汗,但你必须深呼吸,表现镇定。)”点明要强迫自己保持冷静,后文“You will get to the next several steps only if you can achieve it.(只有你能够做到镇定,才能进入接下来的几个步骤。)” D“Staying calm is always better than getting upset.(保持镇定永远比心烦意乱更好。)”
33.上文“Before you start responding, let the person finish saying what they need to say.(开口回应前,先让对方把话说完。)” C“If you don’t, you will just make things worse.(如果你不这样做,只会让事态恶化。)”
34.上文“Tell them that you will get back to them because you need 24 hours to think about this.(告诉对方你需要二十四小时思考,之后再和对方沟通。)” G“This is very helpful because we often feel differently about communication later on.(这样做十分有用,因为我们事后对沟通的感受常会发生改变。)”
35.后文“Think about whether there are any positive messages in the communication. Perhaps the person who is telling the thoughts cares so deeply about you that they truly want you to be the best kind of yourself.(想想沟通中是否有任何积极的信息。

among表示“在……
空格前后的refresh your body和stabilize your nervous system是情态动词can后的两个并列动作,是顺承并列关系,因此用并列连词and。
be of + 抽象名词= be + 该名词对应的形容词,be of vital significance = be vitally significant,意为“至关重要的”,因此填介词of。

Inspired by the words, Sita carefully followed the recipe. Mangos, coconut sauce, flour and butter were all collected and measured. With every ingredient added, she could almost hear the echoes (回响) of past family gatherings. “I want to add something of my own!” Sita said in a high, sweet voice. Then, she rolled her secret into the dough and shaped each mango bun with her mom’s careful guidance, recalling her grandmother’s stories and the celebrations these buns had brightened. It’s more than just cooking. Sita felt connected not only to the recipe but to the generations of women who had kept it alive. A sweet smell filled the kitchen. The buns swelled (膨胀) in the oven, and Sita’s heart swelled, too.
That evening at dinner, Sita’s father took a bite of the mango bun and smiled. “This …” he said, his voice thick with emotion, “tastes like what grandma used to make! But also something new.” Sita looked at Mom and couldn’t help laughing. The following rounds of father’s guesses brought a ripple of (一阵阵) laughter. Around the table, the candlelight danced on smiling faces. Sita caught a quiet pride shining in her parents’ eyes. The freshly baked mango buns had done more than just taste good; they had woven (编织) invisible (隐形的) threads of love and family history, linking the past and present in a perfect moment. She knew this dish had brought the family even closer together.
