(2023•新课标Ⅱ卷,阅读C)Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object — the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader appears throughout history, in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In artists’ representations of books and reading, we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond culture and time.
In this “book of books,” artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations.Adults are portrayed (描绘) alone in many settings and poses — absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to.
Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect (才智), wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right.More recently, as books have become inexpensive or even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks — transforming covers, pages or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures.
Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed page outdated. From a 21st-century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader.To serve its function, a book must be activated by a user: the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or words underlined. And in contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we consume is monitored and tracked, a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private,“off-line” activity.

(2026•福建福州第四次质检)Kristy Gordon’s artistic voice didn’t emerge overnight — it was a year-long process of unlearning perfectionism and rediscovering her creativity.Like many artists, she began by burying her intuition (直觉) under academic expectations.Through strict training in classical techniques, she mastered the rules of “good” painting — only to realize those very rules had become a box.
The turning point came after completing her MFA at the New York Academy of Art.Free from the pressure of peer review, Gordon gave herself permission to experiment without judgment.Gordon made a brave decision to step away from public exhibitions for an entire year, which gave her the freedom to explore without worrying about critical reception or commercial success.Without the approaching deadline of an upcoming exhibition, she found herself painting more freely, trying techniques she’d previously considered “too risky” for public display.
Gordon rediscovered the pure joy of creating for herself alone. The year away from the spotlight allowed her to develop a body of work that was truly hers, rather than shaped by market trends or academic feedback. As she later recalled, “That year of painting in private was like giving myself permission to be a beginner again.Without an audience, I could make all the ‘mistakes’ that eventually led to my artistic breakthroughs.”
The strategy paid off — when she eventually returned to exhibiting, her work showed a new level of confidence and originality that had been formed in that year.
Gordon’s journey reveals an insightful truth: An artist’s voice isn’t something to be found, but something to be uncovered. It requires both courage to silence external expectations and patience to hear your own inner creative whisper. As she reflects, “Your most authentic (真实的) work emerges when you stop trying to make art, and start allowing art to make you.”

(2026•广西贵港三模)Even when Lug was busy, he always welcomed me and let me explore his back room.Lug owned a small, respected piano shop in the city and loved pianos. When it was quieter, he enjoyed my company and told me about the newly arrived pianos. He believed every piano was unique, even if they were from the same maker.Sometimes he knew all about the pianos and their owners.
Other times, he only knew what he could see or hear. Most pianos came from charity sales, with unknown histories. But like an expert, he could tell if a piano was played a lot, kept in the right environment, or had children around it.He could even guess if it was recently shipped. He acted like a detective. His attitude toward pianos mirrored his philosophy of life. While regretting the damage caused by children on keyboard and strings, he found it tolerable because the piano was used and “at the heart of the family”.He thought pianos were more than just furniture and that accidental drinking drops were a small price to pay for introducing young people to a joy that comes from comfort, not awe.
I started playing the violin at six, and now I’m seventy-six.It’s been a big part of my life.It can’t talk, but the instrument can respond with an astonishing range of substance and emotion. This is a special kind of relationship. There are other moments, however, when the violin stubbornly refuses to do as I want — when it only unwillingly plays in tune, or makes the sound I want, or delivers the music’s essence for which I pursue. Then I have to persuade, negotiate, or adjust to its every desire.
Lug’s ideas connected with me.Lug’s ideas connected with me deeply, reminding me that the relationship between musician and instrument is not just about control, but about respect and understanding. In the end, it’s the passion and love we pour into our instruments that truly bring music to life.

(2026•山东德州三模)In this fast-paced world, quiet moments are often spent staring at a phone screen. For those suffering from the inability to switch off and reconnect with themselves, Deborah Alma, a poet, may have just what the doctor ordered. She founded the Poetry Pharmacy, which aims to ease worry with words, allowing visitors to book poetry consultations for personalized advice or pick up a quick fix off the shelves.
Deborah has long used poetry as a tool for good. After graduating with a degree in creative writing, she worked with dementia (失智) patients in a nursing home, reading and composing poems for them. One day, while doing her routine work, she spotted an old ambulance, which kick-started an idea — she could bring poetry to more people in need. Thus, the Emergency Poet was born, witnessing Deborah travelling the country to offer guidance.
In 2019, Deborah transitioned from her mobile practice to a fixed location in Shropshire.Despite the initial feedback that her idea was unrealistic — investors doubted the business model, potential customers were hesitant to embrace the unconventional concept of poetry as therapy (疗法), and even local authorities were unsure how to categorize and regulate such a unique establishment, Deborah stood her ground. She kept offering one-on-one poetry consultations herself, thoughtfully picking out and recommending poems that matched each visitor’s specific emotional state. She also put effort into making the shop feel homely and welcoming, and carefully selected poetry books on display. The Pharmacy has gone from strength to strength, being awarded Regional Independent Bookshop of the Year in 2024, managing to convince people of its value.
Deborah is certain that the practice of the Poetry Pharmacy will grow more popular with time. She may be right: In early 2025, the American Medical Association agreed to include poems and related interpretations in their publication, based on studies showing that poetry can comfort patients and healthcare providers.Deborah said, “The next chapter is bound to be a good one!”

As you grow up, you’re becoming more independent and have more questions and opinions. You might start questioning whether your parents truly understand what they’re discussing, which can lead to conflicts. It’s crucial to respect your parents and grasp why they might hold different opinions.14. However, they also need to understand your perspective and allow you to make your own decisions. After all, in only a few years you’ll probably leave home and have to look after yourself!
Although this situation is common, it remains difficult.Your home should be a place where you can talk openly.Remember, parents are human and can be hurt by your words.Try to remember that in every family there are good times and bad times, but your parents are there for you throughout.Show your appreciation for this, and they’ll see you’re not trying to cause trouble.15.
Be sensitive! If you need to talk, don’t do it before your parents go to work or bed.Consider your words carefully, keep calm and be open and honest.Don’t compare them to your friends’ parents.16. Understanding that many other teens face the same issue helps best in handling your feelings.
17. Remember, there’s no reason why people should automatically understand all your views. The more you engage in conversations with your parents, the better you’ll feel.If you find it difficult to speak with them, seek out another family member, teacher, or the one who can offer support.Stay optimistic, and remember that soon you’ll be making your own choice.

(2026•江西赣州模拟)Mary Cassatt’s place in the history of American art is unique. Not only was she one of the few women artists of any nationality to succeed professionally in her time, but she was also the only American artist to exhibit with the French Impressionists. After mastering the requirements of academic painting, Cassatt broke away from tradition and joined Edgar Degas, a close friend and guide, in the exhibition of Impressionist artists in 1879.Cassatt embraced the technique of the Impressionists while developing a highly accomplished individual style.
Her indirect views, simplified forms, and flat compositions show the impact of Degas’s work, as well as her study of Japanese prints.Cassatt created a personal language out of the grammar of Impressionism. Most often, she painted women like herself out and about in Paris, or at home, taking tea, reading, sewing, writing letters, and engaging in other familiar activities.Cassatt began to explore her distinctive theme — the mother and child — in 1880, and made a specialty of it after 1893.
Cassatt was a skilled artist, accomplished in oil painting as well as in making pastels (粉彩) and prints.Initially, Cassatt worked primarily in oil, but by the early 1890s, printmaking and work in pastels had become her central interests, thanks to Degas, who encouraged her experiments in these media. In all her paintings, pastels, and prints, she revealed herself to be a sensitive and honest witness to the lives of women and children at the end of the nineteenth century.
Although Cassatt chose to live abroad for most of her adult life, she always considered herself an American. She was a frequent participant in art exhibitions in the United States. Her advice to American supporters of art, such as Louisine and H.O.Havemeyer, Alexander Cassatt, John G.Johnson, and Berthe Honoré Palmer, helped to create some of the most remarkable and distinguished art collections in the world.

(2026•河南开封模拟)One ongoing research interest is how music may affect youth in terms of language development, attention, executive (执行) function, cognition (认知) and social-emotional development.Psychologist Assal Habibi, PhD, an assistant research professor at the University of Southern California Dornsife’s Brain and Creativity Institute, has been investigating these topics for the past seven years in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, known as YOLA, an after-school program that brings low-income youngsters together to learn, play and perform music. Now in its final year, the study has been tracking brain and learning outcomes of 75 children who are either participating in YOLA, a community sports program, or no after-school program.
Data published from the first few years of the intervention show that YOLA participants gradually develop auditory (听觉的) and cognitive advantages over youth who aren’t involved in music. After the second year of the study, the YOLA participants showed greater ability to sense rhythm and frequency of sounds, as well as enhanced development in the auditory pathway, the neurological route that connects the inner ear to auditory association areas in the brain. After the third and fourth years in the program, they also began to perform better on tasks unrelated to music. In addition, youth involved in YOLA showed greater development in brain areas related to language and auditory processing, and greater neuronal connectivity in the corpus callosum, the nerve that connects the brain’s right and left parts.
“We obviously expected their musical skills to get better,” she says, “but it seems a broad range of other skills are also impacted by music.” Habibi now has a support from the NEA to follow these same children into adolescence to see whether the brain benefits they gained early on translate into real-life behaviors and decisions as teens-choice of partners, for example, or whether they show up to class.
“As a developmental psychologist, I don’t think there’s just one pathway to better executive function in children,” she explains.“So, it will be interesting for us to identify different mechanisms and understand how each one works.”
