Early people didn’t need to know the exact time of day. They slept when it was dark and worked when it was light.
33,000—28,000 B.C.
People notice that changes in the weather (the seasons) are connected to changes in the sun, moon, and stars.
8,000 B.C.
Chinese, the Maya, and Sumerians develop calendars based on the cycles of the sun (a year) and the moon (a month). Most people are farmers. Calendars tell them when to plant crops and when their animals will have babies.

The Boy Made it!
One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept in to the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could — he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life, In each episode (一期节目) of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
When Grylls heard about Nichola’s amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
24.What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?
A.He got lost. B.He hurt his eyes.
C.He broke his skis. D.He caught a cold.
25.How did Nicholas keep himself warm?
A.He found a shelter. B.He kept on skiing.
C.He built a snow cave. D.He lighted some branches.
26.On Tuesday, Nicholas ______.
A.stayed where he was B.was saved by a searcher
C.got stuck in the snow D.returned to his shelter safely
27.Nicholas left Grylls a very deep impression because he ______.
A.was very hard-working B.created some tips for survival
C.watched Grylls’ TV program regularly D.did the right things in the dangerous situation

The sharp fin (鳍). The rows upon rows of sharp teeth. The large black eyes. The sharks you see on television in Jaws or Discovery’s “Shark Week” are not the friendliest looking creatures. They aren’t exactly an animal you want to find near you while swimming in the ocean. Despite their portrayals (刻画) in movies and popular culture, sharks are complicated, misunderstood creatures that are weaker than they appear.
One very common misunderstanding about sharks is their desire to hunt humans. Actually when sharks attack humans, it is because they mistake a human for their normal prey (猎物), seals or dolphins. They don’t seek out humans on purpose. Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark.
Sharks are very important to the ocean as they are at the top of the food chain. Some sharks even control the balance of an ecosystem through fear alone. Tiger sharks in Australia help protect seagrass meadows from turtles. Turtles eat the seagrass and without the sharks, will destroy these meadows. When tiger sharks are present though, the turtles are scared away, holding back their appetite for seagrass and protecting its growth.
Though sharks have a reputation for being very scary to humans, the sad truth is that they should be scared of humans. The number of sharks in the ocean is steadily dropping. There are a few reasons for this. For one, they mature quite slowly, over several years, and produce relatively few young. For another, overfishing of sharks is happening because more and more people want their fins. About 100 million sharks are killed every year according to National Geographic. Shark fin is a way for people to show off their wealth. Shark fins are also believed to have medicinal benefits, though there is no evidence or proof that they actually do.
28.What do most people think about sharks?
A.They are ugly. B.They are important.
C.They are violent. D.They are complicated.
29.What does the author try to show by comparing shark bites to lightning strikes?
A.Shark bites are deadly. B.Shark bites are rare.
C.Shark bites are unpredictable. D.Shark bites are painful.
30.Why should sharks be scared of humans according to the author?
A.Humans keep sharks to show off.
B.Humans catch sharks for medical research.
C.Humans kill sharks in large quantities.
D.Humans are greater in number than sharks.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Ocean Life: Save Our Sharks!
B.Sharks: Kings of Protectors?
C.Ocean Life: An Ecological Crisis!
D.Sharks: Killers or Misunderstood?
D
Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job? This is a question that many people think about these days. At present, the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain.
Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. Robots, for example, are believed to develop emotional intelligence sometime, which enables them to recognize, understand and express emotions in a way that is similar to humans, but we must avoid AI copying human emotions. Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster.
The AI-driven new industrial revolution is irreversible. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. But it always turned out humanity was able to adapt to each industrial revolution and create new forms of employment. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.
32.What does the author imply about AI’s future?
A.It will be too complex to control.
B.It depends on human innovation.
C.It will be regulated more strictly.
D.It may outperform the human brain.
33.How can we prevent AI’s potential threat?
A.By stirring emotions.
B.By blocking functions.
C.By setting restrictions.
D.By changing regulations.
34.What does the underlined word “irreversible” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Undesirable. B.Unavoidable.
C.Unpredictable. D.Unbelievable.
35.What does the writer suggest readers do with the coming of the AI era?
A.Deal with it positively. B.Accept it passively.
C.Respond to it randomly. D.Defend it unconditionally.

One sunny Saturday morning, I got ready for a hike with my classmates. I was so excited about it since it was my first time to go hiking. I ate a light breakfast just a few slices of bread and an egg. After that I grabbed my backpack and hurriedly ran out of my house and then met my classmates at the school gate. At that time I didn’t think that there would be a terrible disaster ahead.
The jungle (丛林) that we are going to was far from our area. Its name was Salymbia Jungle. The drive was 3 hours long but it was not a dull ride as we were all eager about the hike and we bad each other’s company. We appointed a guide and his name was Thomas. He said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times, and he was familiar with the pathways. When we arrived, Thomas allowed us to begin. There were a wide variety of plants which I had never seen before. The smell of the jungle was so earthy. All of us were amazed by the beauty of the scenery and the sound of the creatures.
After a while we were walking and then I looked at my wrist (手腕) to check the time but then I realized my watch had fallen off. Then I walked back without telling anyone. I did not worry about getting lost since there were other persons behind and I thought I would have been able to catch up with my classmates. I went back searching the pathway and I lost track of time and lost sight of my classmates. I immediately realized that I was alone.
After I realized I was lost, the first thing I did was to check my phone to see how far away I was from my companions. However, I was having no luck because there was no network in my phone, which made my phone practically useless.
The sky started to become darker.
As I was falling asleep, I heard a human voice.

Text 1
M: What are you up to?
W: Checking my college application form. I’ve finally come to a decision about what to study in college.
M: Is engineering still your top choice?
W: Yeah. I was thinking of studying computer science, but I decided against it in the end.
Text 2
W: May I help you, sir?
M: Yes, I’m looking to replace my old laptop bag. I go on a lot of business trips, so I’m looking for something with wheels.
Text 3
W: When will you be arriving, Mr. Baranski?
M: Let me see. It’s Monday today, so on Thursday, the 16th of May.
W: And how long will you be staying?
M: Two nights, leaving on Saturday.
Text 4
M: I’m leaving next week for the trip and I still don’t know what to do with my Cooper.
W: Well, you know I am sensitive to animals so I can’t help. Hey! I just remembered I have a friend that has a pet hotel.
M: I guess I can do that.
Text 5
M: You look stressed. Is there something wrong?
W: I’ve been trying to delete a table from my report but every time I do it, it ruins the file format.
M: I’ll fix it for you, if you agree to help me with the shopping later.
Text 6
W: Good morning Mr Davis. I’m calling to see how Max has been doing in class recently.
M: Good morning Mrs Taylor. Overall, he’s doing well. He gets along with others and works hard, but he seems a bit unsure about some math topics.
W: We haven’t noticed much at home. Is it something to worry about?
M: It’s no big deal, but a little extra support would help.
W: What would you suggest we do first?
M: For now, I’d suggest he talk to the math teacher during lunch this week.
Text 7
W: Mike, did you notice the slow service tonight? It’s unusually crowded.
M: Yeah. Our orders took forever to arrive, and they got mine wrong.
W: Same here. And the waitstaff seem busy and understaffed. I saw a few tables complaining about their orders too. I think we should talk to the manager before leaving.
M: Definitely. This level of service isn’t acceptable for such a reputable restaurant.
W: Let’s do that. Maybe they can improve service for future diners. And it could help them understand what went wrong tonight.
M: Good idea. I’ll ask for the manager once we finish our meal.
W: It’s important to address these issues constructively rather than just leaving without saying anything.
M: Absolutely, Amanda.
Text 8
W: I’ve just seen Mel. She was telling me about that qualification she’s doing. It’s something about life coaching, isn’t it?
M: That’s right. She’ll be great at it. You know how many times she has helped us with our problems?
W: Is that all life coaching means?
M: Well, life coaches show their clients how to adopt new approaches or new routines, and this enables them to make permanent changes. It’s about much more than analyzing a specific problem and fixing it.
W: You sound like Mel! I’m still lost, though.
M: Look, take something you’re always complaining about. Like, having to do chores around the house. A life coach would help you address this by helping you change your attitude to doing the chores in the first place. By working on your mindset, that will help you go forward.
W: Oh, that makes sense. Mel would be brilliant at that.
Text 9
W: Trent, how did you get into mountain climbing?
M: Many people start climbing because they’ve watched a television documentary about climbing a mountain and a good friend enjoyed reading the biography of a famous climber. My experience was more unusual, though. When I was nine, I started at a new school where there was an amazing artwork on the wall. It showed some snow-covered mountains and I thought, I want to climb those!
W: You climbed your first big mountain when you were ten. How did you feel beforehand?
M: I was convinced I’d be really nervous before we set off, but the opposite was actually true, which I couldn’t quite believe. I went with very experienced climbers whom I trusted.
W: You decided to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Why was that?
M: My grandfather became ill and there wasn’t much financial support for scientists trying to find a cure, so I asked people to sponsor me to climb the seven peaks. I became the youngest person ever to climb them, though that wasn’t my reason for doing it.
Text 10
M:
Hi, my talk today is about an invention, the modern car seat belt.
The inventor of the modern car seat belt was a Swedish man called Nils Bohlin. Bohlin had trained as a mechanical engineer at college before gaining his first employment as an aircraft designer. He did well, so was invited to join a car manufacturing company as a safety engineer.
Bohlin had often worked on improving seats and seat belts for planes since starting his working life in 1942. After joining the car manufacturer in 1958, he spent the following 12 months developing his ideas for cars, and then a car featuring Bohlin’s creation on both front seats was introduced, making it the earliest example of a vehicle with modern seat belts.
However, it took many years for them to become widely accepted. Japan made it a rule that everyone must wear seat belts in their cars across the whole country in 1971. A year earlier, two of the six states in Australia had introduced similar rules. France was the first European nation to create seat belt laws several years later. It’s incredible to think that some investment in research and development in the manufacturing industry has had such a huge global impact.
A
21.根据第三段中“Calendars tell them when to plant crops and when their animals will have babies.(日历告诉他们什么时候种庄稼,什么时候他们的动物要产仔)”可知,古代中国人使用日历来知道何时种庄稼。
22.根据倒数第四段“European cities build towers with mechanical clocks inside. Every hour, a bell is rung for all to hear.(欧洲的城市会建造内部装有机械时钟的塔。每隔一小时,就会有铃声响起)”可知,欧洲人建造了里面有机械钟的塔。
23.根据倒数第二段中“Atomic clocks are the most accurate clocks yet.(原子钟是目前最精确的钟)”可知,原子钟是最精确的。
B
24.根据第一段“Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone!(还没等他反应过来,尼古拉斯就迷路了,孤身一人!)”
25.根据第四段“Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.(尼古拉斯用他的滑雪板造了一个雪洞。他收集了一大堆雪,在中间挖了一个洞。然后他把树枝堆在身上,像毯子一样,尽可能地保持温暖)”可知,Nicholas保持温暖的方式是建了一个雪洞。
26.根据第六段“On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved. (星期二,尼古拉斯又出去寻求帮助。当一名志愿搜索者发现他时,他已经走了大约一英里。被困在雪地里两天后,尼古拉斯得救了)”可知,星期二的时候,Nicholas被一名志愿搜索者救了。
27.根据最后一段“When Grylls heard about Nichola’s amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
28.根据第一段中“The sharks you see on television in Jaws or Discovery’s “Shark Week” are not the friendliest looking creatures. They aren’t exactly an animal you want to find near you while swimming in the ocean. (你在电影《大白鲨》或探索频道的“鲨鱼周”中看到的鲨鱼并不是最友好的生物。它们可不是你在海里游泳时希望在身边发现的动物。)”以及第二段中“One very common misunderstanding about sharks is their desire to hunt humans. (关于鲨鱼,一个非常普遍的误解是认为它们渴望猎杀人类。)”可知,大多数人认为鲨鱼很凶猛。
29.根据第二段中“Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark. (从统计数据来看,你被闪电击中的可能性比被鲨鱼咬伤的可能性更大。)”可知,作者通过将鲨鱼咬人与被闪电击中进行比较,是为了说明鲨鱼咬人是很罕见的。
30.根据最后一段中“Though sharks have a reputation for being very scary to humans, the sad truth is that they should be scared of humans. The number of sharks in the ocean is steadily dropping. There are a few reasons for this. For one, they mature quite slowly, over several years, and produce relatively few young. For another, overfishing of sharks is happening because more and more people want their fins. About 100 million sharks are killed every year according to National Geographic.
31.通读全文,结合第一段中“Despite their portrayals in movies and popular culture, sharks are complicated, misunderstood creatures that are weaker than they appear.
32.根据第二段中“But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain. (但考虑到技术是人类文明的产物,人工智能带来的挑战是我们自己在不断突破自身界限时创造的。换句话说,人工智能的进步、功能和未来方向都是由人类大脑决定的。)”可知,作者认为人工智能的未来取决于人类的创新。
33.根据第三段中“More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. (更重要的是,相关法律法规必须确保人工智能造福社会,防止其威胁人类生命。)”以及“Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster. (没有法律限制,人工智能可能会成为一场社会灾难。)”可知,我们可以通过制定法律限制(设置约束)来防止人工智能的潜在威胁。
34.根据划线词后一句“This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. (和之前的工业革命一样,这将肯定会影响人类就业,之前的工业革命带来了以前难以想象的变化。)”可知,人工智能驱动的新工业革命和之前的工业革命一样,是不可避免的,且会影响人类就业。由此可推知,划线单词irreversible意为“不可避免的”,与Unavoidable意思相近。
35.根据最后一段中“Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown. (因此,没有必要担心人工智能会取代我们的工作。虽然技术进步迅速,但我们需要做的是欢迎人工智能时代的到来,而不是因为害怕未知而阻止它的发展。)”可推知,作者建议读者积极应对人工智能时代的到来。
七选五
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了自我提升的一些好的建议。
36. 根据上文“Life can be a whirlwind of responsibilities and stress, but the right focus goes a long way towards ensuring you become a better person.(生活可能是一场责任和压力的旋风,但正确的关注对确保你成为一个更好的人有很大帮助)”以及后文“Keep reading to learn how you can go about your self-improvement journey.(继续读下去,学习如何开始自我提升之旅)”可知,上文提到了成为更好的人,后文介绍如何开始自我提升,G选项中better yourself对应上文a better person。
37.根据后文“Everyone needs something to live for, so think about what you want in life. Not only can struggling for something make you a happier and better person, but it can also help you find your purpose. Use a pen and paper and write down the short and long-term goals you would like to achieve.(每个人都需要为之而活,所以想想你在生活中想要什么。为某件事奋斗不仅能让你变得更快乐、更好,还能帮助你找到自己的目标。用纸和笔写下你想要实现的短期和长期目标)”可知,本段讲的是设置目标,E选项中Positive aspiration something to thrive for与本段的something make you a happier and better person 相呼应,故E选项“积极的抱负能给你带来成长的动力”符合语境。
38.根据上文“Allow yourself time to forgive your past mistakes and recognize what they’ve taught you.(给自己一点时间来原谅过去的错误,并认识到它们教会了你什么)”以及后文“You may not be able to forget what they’ve done, that’s okay, but forgiveness can give you peace of mind.(你可能无法忘记他们做过的事,这没关系,但宽恕可以让你内心平静)”可知,空前提到让自己有时间原谅你过去的错误,并认识到它们教给你的东西,后面提到也许你可能无法忘记他们做了什么,但宽恕可以让你内心平静,故可知,本句是在建议学会原谅,故B选项“然后,原谅那些在过去伤害过你的人”符合语境。
39.根据上文“Everyone has flaws, but you can concentrate on improving yours. Notice how your behavior and attitude affect others. Are people generally happy or sad around you?(每个人都有缺点,但你可以集中精力改善自己的缺点。

Dear Tom,
Thank you for your invitation to dinner at your home tomorrow evening. Unfortunately, it is much to my regret that I cannot join you and your family, because I will be fully occupied then for an important exam coming the day after tomorrow. I feel terribly sorry for missing the chance of such a happy get-together, and I hope that all of you enjoy a good time. Is it possible for you and me to have a private meeting afterward? If so, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line about your preferable date. I do long for a pleasant chat with you.
Please allow me to say sorry again.
Yours,

第二节
The sky started to become darker. I didn’t know what to do, so I called out to my classmates but there was no reply. I looked for a way but none of the scenes seemed familiar. I walked for a few more minutes, hoping to meet other people behind, but once again it didn’t worked. I was scared hungry and helpless. Still, I know it is no use being anxious. I needed to keep calm. I decided to stay where I was, saving my energy until the rescue team arrived.
As I was falling asleep, I heard a human voice. I doubted my ears but then I heard someone else. I screamed, “Help!” There was a note of excitement in my voice. They were rescuers who had come searching for me because my classmates reported my loss. They took me back to the bus. The moment I saw my classmates, I couldn’t control my tears in my eyes. They kept asking if I was hurt and what had happened. When they learned I was safe, they were relieved. What an unforgettable experience!
