Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital city of the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city’s museums and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
●Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
●Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
●Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
●Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

“I want to work full-time in China, honey.” An overseas call awakened the wife from sound sleep. “Why?” asked the wife with surprise, in a drowsy (昏昏欲睡的) voice, from the other side of the ocean.
In the United States, he had a great future ahead. At the age of 36, he became the youngest professor in the history of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University, for his academic achievements. At 40, he became a tenured (终身的) chair professor at Princeton.
When everything seemed perfect and admirable to others, he firmly decided to say goodbye to Princeton University, to an affluent life in the United States, and return to China.
The news spread explosively. Many expressed confusion, many persuaded him, many made fun of him, and still many waited to have a good laugh at him.
He said patriotism is the plainest feeling of a person. Who doesn’t love his motherland, after all? In his heart, the American dream is already something past; the Chinese dream is rising.
After returning to China, he devoted all his energy, worked like crazy, and determined to do something big. He formed a life science research team. Every day, he works 12 to 16 hours at his laboratory. He is Shi Yigong, nicknamed “Da Niu” (someone with extraordinary achievements) by Tsinghua students. His given name, Yigong, comes from an idiom that means “devoted to public interest whole-heartedly”. “So far as I’m concerned, awards are of no special meaning.” Shi says calmly.
In his 18 years of study in the United States, he never forgot his Chinese dream. In the next 18 years, the Chinese dream will be more beautiful and greater by the efforts of Shi Yigong and the likes of him.
24.Why was Shi determined to return to China?
A.To serve his motherland. B.To reunite with his wife.
C.To live a quieter life. D.To make more money.

A.To support his life science research. B.To praise his honesty.
C.To introduce his endless energy in work. D.To show his unusual achievements.

Winter can usually kill most wildfires. But in the far North, some forest fires just don’t die. They are thought of as “zombie (僵尸) fires”.
“Zombie fires” usually sleep underground in winter. Covered by snow, they smoke through the cold. Fueled by carbon-rich peat (泥炭) and soil in the North, most of these hidden fires spread slowly for less than 500 meters during the winter. When spring comes, the flames (火焰) of the fires appear near sites that they have burned in winter, and they turn to burning fresh fuels around. This may happen well before the traditional fire season in the far North.
“Zombie fires” had been known mostly from firefighters’ stories. Few scientists studied them until details in some satellite images attracted one research team. Rebecca Scholten, a member of the team, studies earth systems at Vrije University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Her team noticed an unusual thing. “New fires have been starting very close to the former years’ fires in recent years, and we wonder how often the fires might survive the winter,” Scholten explains.
These “zombie fires” are rarely seen before, according to a new study from Nature. But in recent years, they are becoming more common, the study warns. It is believed that the “zombie fires” are even on the road of being a threat. Forests in the far North are warming faster than the globe’s average. Scholten says, “We’re seeing more hot summers and more large fires and strong burning. That could set the stage for the fires to become a bigger problem,” she worries. And the region’s soils hold a lot of carbon—maybe twice as much as earth’s atmosphere. More fires here could give off huge amounts of greenhouse gases. That would drive a cycle of more warming and even higher risk of fires.
28.What do we know about the “zombies fires” in the far North?
A.They will completely die out in winter.
B.Their flames can only appear in spring.
C.Carbon-rich peat helps them burn slowly in winter.
D.They often happen after the traditional fire season.
29.What can we infer from Scholten’s words in paragraph 3?
A.“Zombie fires” happen more frequently than before.
B.“Zombie fires” appear earlier than the years before.
C.“Zombie fires” appear in different shapes every year.
D.“Zombie fires” happen far from former years’ fires.
30.What may be a cause of being a threat for the “zombie fires”?
A.More greenhouse gases are given off.
B.The area’s soils are short of carbon.
C.The global warming is slowing down.
D.The hot summers are less and less seen.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Will “zombie fires” disappear?
B.Pay attention to “zombie fires”!
C.Are “zombie fires” frightening?
D.“Zombie fires” are caused by humans!
D
The first wave of concerns over artificial intelligence(AI)in 2023 appeared soon after New Year’s Day when classrooms reopened and schools from Seattle to Paris started blocking ChatGPT, a powerful software based on AI large language models, because teenagers were using it to do their homework.
The AI large language models behind such products as ChatGPT work by repeatedly guessing the next word in a sentence after having “learned” the rules from a huge amount of/human-written works. Although they often get facts wrong, their answers appear so natural that Keven, their inventors begin to worry about their possible use for spreading false information.
People became more worried when various AI products started to create not just texts but novel images, music and human voices, which threatened the livelihoods of anyone who writes, draws or sings for a living. It led to strikes by Hollywood writers and actors and legal challenges from artists and bestselling authors. Some of the most respected scientists even warned that the technology’s unchecked progress was possibly threatening human existence. “In the longer term, they might manage our attention,” pioneering AI scientist Fei Fei Lisaid. “They would tell us which video to watch, which book to read or whose communication to respond as AI technology’s abilities improve rapidly. They could be a very good assistant, but also with really big risks.”
Li hoped that 2023 is going to be a year for people to think about what Al is, how to use it and what the effects are — all the good, the bad and the ugly.
“It’s easy to forget that they are not the first wave of AI products. Computer vision techniques developed by Li and other scientists have helped sort through a huge database of photos to recognize objects and individual faces and guide self-driving cars. Speech recognition advances have made voice assistants like Siri and Alexa a normal thing in many people’s lives,” said Tom Gruber, co-founder of Siri Inc.
32.Why did schools try to stop their students from using ChatGPT?
A.ChatGPT often got facts wrong in the class.
B.Students spent too much time on the software.
C.ChatGPT helped students spread false information.
D.Students used the software to cheat at their homework.
33.What are the second and third paragraphs mainly about?
A.AI’s training costs. B.ATs amazing abilities.
C.AI’s possible threats. D.AI’s fast developments.
34.What would Tom Gruber most probably suggest people do?
A.Think carefully about AI’s impact. B.Welcome AI technology
C.Do use ChatGPT more carefully. D.Upgrade ChatGPT in time.
35.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A news report. B.A guide book to a software.
C.A product review. D.An introduction to a person.

Fear of Missing Out
It’s a common experience: You’re scrolling through a social media page, and you see pictures of friends traveling or going to parties. Suddenly you start to wonder why you’re not doing those things. Are you missing out on something fun and exciting because you’re locked into everyday life? This experience has come to be known as the fear of missing out, sometimes abbreviated(缩写) FOMO. 36 But with the rise of social media, FOMO is becoming much more common.
Wanting to be in on the fun when exciting things are happening is completely normal. But for some people, it can lead to an addiction to checking their phones to find out what other people are doing. Even while doing things that are fun or necessary, people can feel like there’s something better going on elsewhere. This urge to connect can lead them to disconnect from the people they are actually with. 37 It can even be dangerous; some people try to check messages while driving.
Remember that what people choose to post on social media does not necessarily reflect their life overall. People tend to pick and choose the things they share, so we only ever know a small part of anyone else’s life.
38 You cannot be everywhere and do everything that might be interesting or productive, and that’s OK.
It might even be necessary to turn off your phone or log out of social media for a while. 39 You can even set particular times in your day to check email and social media. By stepping away for a time, you can help keep other people’s lives in perspective.
Finally, focus on the things in front of you. Enjoy them, do them well and let everything else go. 40
Don’t let the fear of missing out cause you to miss out on the good things you have in life. Relax, enjoy what you do and let other people enjoy their lives without envying them.
A.To some extent, people have always worried about missing out on things.
B.Without the social media you will get unconnected with the whole world.
C.It also prevents them from being satisfied with the good things in their lives.
D.When you fully engage with life, you’ll worry less about what you’re not doing.
E.Get rid of the constant reminders of everything that’s happening in the world.
F.It’s difficult to connect with the reasons why you choose not to participate.
G.It’s also important to be humble and acknowledge your limitations.

It was a cool early morning of the winter season. I was excited to start my morning walk. Every day I promise myself that I would start ‘walking exercise’ but it never happened. I saw, so many people were engaged in this amazing habit but I could never push myself. So that day I was determined to take the golden opportunity!
I got everything ready, my shoes, socks, hand glove, and jacket, etc from the previous night. I don’t know why I felt as if I am going to do some expedition! Oh yes! I was ready and started walking on the lonely road. The outside temperature seemed to be below 18 degrees. But I enjoyed the fresh air. Probably that day I was the only one who was walking on the road at that time. I think I was too early but anyhow I loved it!
After a few yards were covered, I felt delighted! Tall trees were on both the roadsides. It was so calm and quiet all around except randomly the little birds was singing sweetly in the trees. On one side of the road, a small pond was there. Since it was my first walking exercise, I thought to take a little rest just near the bank of the river and then continue. The sun was moving closer to the horizon scattering colors to the sky.
As the sky started glittering with beautiful yellow and red light like every day before the sunrise, I left that place and ended my journey furthermore. I comforted myself that the next day I would increase my exercise a little more. I turned and leisurely walked down towards my home.
From then on, I kept walking in the morning every day. And many things beautiful occurred. However, the one I’ll never forget is my friendship with a homeless dog, which finally became a member of my family.

66.Appreciation of Digital Chinese Painting
Last Sunday, our school held an activity with the theme of “Appreciation of Digital Chinese Painting” in the Academic Lecture Hall. Teachers and students from all grades were involved in this exhibition. Works created by some famous painters were presented to the audience in digital forms in the activity, which showed the charm of traditional Chinese painting and the wide application of science and technology in the field of art. The activity turned out to be a great success. Not only has it aroused the students’ interest of Chinese painting, but also enriched our campus life. Both students and teachers hope to participate in such activities again.

67. I came across the dog while walking in the morning. It followed me for a long time. I stopped to wait for it to approach, but it stopped and kept a distance from me. To my surprise, I met the dog in the same place the next morning. I tried to touch it. It was a little shy, but it didn’t run away from me. I gave him food every time we met. Then I went on a business trip for more than half a year.
Returning home, I continued to walk only to find a team of dogs following me. I stopped to see what was the matter. As they came nearer, I recognized the homeless dog. Followed by several baby dogs, it ran quickly to me. I suddenly understood the fact: it had become a mother. By this time, I could confirm that the dog had no home. Without hesitation, I took them straight home. Since then, the mother dog and its children have found a warm home, with a warm-hearted person taking good care of them.

1.
【原文】W: Hey, Andy Did you go to the Seoul Rose Festival last week? I saw photos online — so many flowers!
M: Yeah, I did. The festival runs from May 16th to 24th. I arrived there on the third day.
W: Wow, how was it?
M: Amazing! The roses were beautiful in every color. I took tons of photos.
2.
【原文】M: Was everything all right?
W: Yes, it was wonderful. I especially liked the beef. The sauce had such a rich, smoky flavor. May I have the check, please?
M: Sure thing. Coming right up.
3.
【原文】M: Excuse me. Are you looking for anything in particular?
W: Yes, my son is graduating from high school, and I want to get him something special.
M: You’ve come to the right place. We’ve got plenty of creative gifts perfect for boys — whether they’re into art, travel, or something in between.
4.
【原文】W: I have a spare ticket for this Saturday’s concert. It will be held near your studio. Would you like to go with me?
M: Sorry. I have promised to have a big dinner with Alice.
5.
【原文】W: I heard you took a trip to Mexico last month. How did you like it?
M: Oh, I got sick and tired of the hotel and the food there. So now I understand the thing: East or west, home is best.
6.~7.
【原文】W: Have you heard about the two climbers, Nicolas Hojac and Philipp Brugger?
M: No. What’s up?
W: They climbed three big mountains in Switzerland — the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. They were super fast. They did it in 15 hours and 30 minutes. The old record was 25 hours.
M: That’s amazing. The two men broke the record.
W: Yes. They started climbing at 1:00 am. They arrived at the peak of the first mountain in six hours. They kept moving fast and didn’t stop for long. They’d thought that they’d need at least 19 hours, but they were much faster.
8.~10.
【原文】W: Did you try surfing in Australia? It’s a huge part of the culture there.
M: Yeah, I saw people out surfing! Is it really that popular?
W: Absolutely! It brings $20 billion to the economy every year — it’s a massive industry. It also supports over 100,000 jobs.
M: Wow. Have you heard some surf spots are in trouble?
W: Sadly, yes. Surf breaks face issues from climate change and coastal development.
M: Are there any countries stepping in to help?
W: New Zealand and Peru have protection rules, but Australia’s measures are insufficient. Unlike New Zealand’s legal ban on coastal construction near breaks or Peru’s fines against damaging activities like illegal fishing, Australia lacks comparable nationwide protections for its surf spots.
11.~13.
【原文】M: Have you heard about the robotic dogs at the greenhouse base?
W: No. What do they do?
M: They walk row by row to check vegetables for insects and diseases. We don’t have to check each plant by hand anymore!
W: That’s incredible! How do they work?
M: They use AI — like a smart brain. They take pictures of the crops and send the data to technicians. Then the experts tell us how to grow better or fight pests.
W: So we don’t have to guess about problems anymore?
M: Exactly! The dogs handle the tough work, and science provides the answers. Last year, they found a pest problem early in the tomatoes before it spread.
W: Do they replace us?
M: No, they help us! We still manage the farms, but now we have smart helpers. The tech even tells us when to water or fertilize, based on the data.
W: I hope our village gets these dogs too. It would make farming easier and greener.
M: Yeah. Modern farming is getting pretty cool!
14.~16.
【原文】M: Did the giant pandas leave Malaysia yesterday? I saw many people crying on the news.
W: Yes. It’s hard to believe Xing Xing and Liang Liang have been here for 11 years. Why did they head back to China?
M: Their lease agreement ended. They aren’t here for research. They were a gift from China to mark the 40-year friendship between the two countries. Remember how crowds flocked to the zoo when they first arrived?
W: Definitely! My family visited twice when I was a kid. The zoo even built a special conservation center for them. Many kids learned about conservation through them.
M: Yes, and their caretaker went with them to help them settle in. The deputy president said they were healthy, but everyone’s still sad — they feel like family.
W: I heard they had three cubs here. Are the cubs still in Malaysia?
M: Well, Nuan Nuan, Yi Yi, and Sheng Yi went back ahead of time. Glad they’ll reunite as a family.
W: Yeah. Hopefully, another pair will come someday, but for now, I’m glad they got such a warm send-off.

Three years later, there are over 40,000 village cafes across China.
