Every month, Julia and her cousins would get a few coins from their grandfather. Most children spent theirs right away on snacks. The adults worried the children would never learn to manage money, so they started a one-year competition to see what the kids could get with their coins.
Ruben and Nico, the two smallest kids, continued spending their coins all on snacks. Every time, they would show off their snacks in front of the other children.
Monty decided to start managing his money by buying and selling things or betting (打赌) with other children. Soon he got a lot of money for little effort. However, Monty lost everything on a horse race a few months later.
Alex saved every coin. After a year, he had more money than anyone. Even better, he had a smart plan. Instead of spending right away, he waited until after the competition, when snacks were sold at a reduced price. His wise planning allowed his money to buy enough snacks for more than a year. He taught everyone the value of saving.
Julia didn’t enjoy the day of the competition. Even though she had had a wonderful secret plan, she had spent her money without giving her plan enough time to work. Julia loved the violin, but her family couldn’t afford lessons. She met a poor violinist in the park and gave him all her coins for lessons. Although it wasn’t much money, the violinist agreed. Julia learnt very hard. After a year, the violinist lent her a violin, and they played together in the park to make money. They were so successful that gradually Julia managed to buy her own violin. Many years later, Julia became a very famous violinist. And she would always tell people how it was possible, with just a few coins well spent, to make a wild dream a reality.

Green energy is any energy type that is generated (产生) from natural resources, such as sunlight, wind, or water. The key feature of these energy resources is that they don’t harm the environment through ways such as releasing greenhouse gases into the air.
Solar power is usually produced using photovoltaic cells (光伏电池) that take in sunlight and turn it into electricity. It is often used to heat buildings and for hot water as well as for cooking and lighting. Solar power has now become cheap enough to be used for home purposes. And it is also used to power whole neighborhoods.
Wind power works well at offshore and high-altitude (高海拔的) places. It uses the power of wind to push special machines that then generate electricity. Unlike solar power, which works best in sunny weather, wind power can generate electricity day and night as long as there is wind. This makes it a good choice for powering large factories and providing energy for a country’s power network.
Hydro power uses moving water to produce electricity. It can even work in a small area using the movement of water through pipes at home. Hydro power can provide steady electricity, which is especially useful for powering cities and large industrial areas where energy needs never stop.
In short, green energy provides us with clean and renewable power. By choosing these natural energy sources over fossil fuels (化石燃料), we can protect our planet, fight climate change, and build a better future for everyone on Earth.
38. According to Para. 1, what is the main feature of green energy?
A. It is cheap and easy to get.
B. It works well day and night.
C. It doesn’t pollute the environment.
39. Why is solar power good for home use?
A. It has become inexpensive.
B. It doesn’t need special tools.
C. It is not affected by weather.
40. What does the underlined word ‘steady”’in Para. 4 mean?
A. Clean and safe. B. Regular and nonstop. C. Fast and balanced.
41. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The ways to go green in our daily life.
B. The importance of protecting our planet.
C. The main types of green energy and their advantages.
D
The Scholars, or Rulin waishi, is a novel written by the Qing Dynasty author Wu Jingzi. It tells stories about ancient scholars who studied for the imperial examinations (科举考试) to become officials.
Wu came from a family of officials but never passed the highest exam. The Scholars is the result of his careful observation (观察) of and deep thinking about the scholars and the imperial examination system.
It is widely believed that the imperial examination system started in the Sui Dynasty. Scholars who passed the exams would become officials. Their social status(地位) and quality of life would also become different from that of those who failed the exams. Little by little, passing the exams was seen as the only way to succeed, so cheating became common. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the problems of the examination system became more serious. Scholars spent all their time studying the “eight-legged essay (八股文)”. They had no interest in any practical knowledge, and slowly, they became rigid (死板的) and unhelpful to society.
Fan Jin, a well-known character in the book, is a perfect example of the scholars during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Poor and failing the exams for decades(十年), he loses confidence and is looked down on. At over fifty, he finally passes the exam for juren, but he has no idea about the most basic facts. For example, he has not even heard of the famous Northern Song poet Su Dongpo.
However, the book also introduces “real scholars” like Zhuang Shaoguang and Du Shaoqing. They are well-educated, have good moral character (道德品质), and do not seek fame and gain. They stand for the kind of perfect scholar that Wu Jingzi himself dreamed of and respected.
42. Which of the following is TRUE about Wu?
A. He was born into an official family.
B. He wrote only one work in his lifetime.
C. He was an official in the Qing government.
43. What can we infer about Fan Jin?
A. He was an expert on poetry and painting.
B. He studied only to pass the imperial examinations.
C. He became rich right after passing the juren exam.
44. How did Wu Jingzi feel about scholars like Zhuang Shaoguang and Du Shaoqing?
A. He felt sorry that they had not achieved greater fame.
B. He saw them as the ideal scholars.
C. He thought they were rigid and unhelpful.
45.What was most likely Wu Jingzi’s purpose in writing The Scholars?
A. To encourage scholars to be practical and useful.
B. To tell some funny stories about ancient scholars.
C. To share his ideas on scholars and the imperial examination system.

Nowadays, it is important for people to have a good understanding of the rules of online etiquette. Knowing these rules can help make online communication focused and respectful.
The tone (语气) is one of the first online etiquette rules we should know. While an online conversation with friends doesn’t necessarily need much thought, the same doesn’t apply(适用) when we are having a conversation with others like teachers. For example, sending “Hello. I have a question about …” rather than “Hey! What’s this?” makes a big difference.
Second, we shouldn’t tell jokes freely when talking with others online. While in person, we communicate with the help of facial expressions. Conveying(表达,传递) the same message online can be more challenging. This is especially true when it comes to humour. A light-hearted joke can be explained differently in an online message.
When there is a discussion, it’s important that everyone stays on topic. It’s easy to digress (跑题), especially when many people are taking part. Adding unnecessary information can waste time and make it hard for others to understand what the discussion is really about. So, we should make sure we understand what the discussion is about and only share things that matter.
Online privacy(隐私,私密) is something we should keep in mind anytime. We should never share others’ personal emails or photos without their permission. We live in a time when many things happen online, which means there is no real privacy on the Internet. Therefore, we should think wisely about what we share.
In short, good netiquette is about being kind and polite online. When we all follow these simple rules, we build trust, show respect, and help make the Internet a safer, more welcoming space for everyone.
Netiquette (66. online etiquette)
