My grandfather drank another mouthful of water and tried to rest his hurt legs on the soft grass. He seemed really in great pain. His dream trip had turned terrible in one quick moment. He had promised to take me around the mountains.
He looked at me and said. “Kirk, I need you to get back to the fire tower and call Ken. He works for the ranger stations (护林站), and I know him.”
I got worried right away. I started to cry and said, “Me? I am a city kid who has never been here. I am unfamiliar with the mountains here.”
My grandfather read my thoughts and smiled. “Just climb up that hill, Kirk. When you reach a narrow path (小径), turn left and look up. You can see the fire tower.”
“You’ll be my legs today. I’ll be fine. You do what needs to be done,” he continued.
I wasn’t sure whether I could find the fire tower, but I wouldn’t let him down. More importantly, I couldn’t lose my grandfather.
The clouds were getting thicker and darker, and I knew I had to move. Carefully, I climbed hard up with my hands and knees. When I finally searched the narrow path, I turned left just as my grandfather had told me.
I was already freezing in just a thin T-shirt. Soon, some hailstones (冰雹) hit my head and arms. With no hiding places around, I used my backpack to protect myself.
Finally, I found the fire tower. As I climbed toward the tower, it became very foggy. I could only see a few steps ahead, ▲ . I knew I would do everything to save my grandfather.
I managed to reach the fire tower. I picked up the phone and called the ranger station. When Ken answered, I quickly told him the situation about my grandfather. Ken said they would find him and bring him out safely.

C
When people talk about the future of energy, they often imagine modern machines. Few would imagine some hot sand. Yet in Finland (芬兰), this is exactly what the future looks like. A small town is now using sand to store energy and heat buildings.
Pornainen is a quiet town with about 5,000 people. For many years, Pornainen produced heat by burning oil and wood. While this worked, it also caused pollution. The local government paid attention to environmental problems. To find a cleaner solution, a local heating company turned to an unusual idea—a giant sand battery (电池).
A sand battery does not store electricity like a normal battery. Instead, it stores heat. When wind or solar (太阳的) power produces more energy than people need, the system (系统) uses this electricity to heat the sand to very high temperatures. The hot sand is kept inside a special container (容器). Later, when heat is needed, air is pushed through the sand and warmed. This hot air is then used to heat water, and the heated water warms buildings.
The new battery in Pornainen is the largest in the world. It is about 13 meters tall and 15 meters wide. It can be heated to 400℃. Once heated, it can hold heat for months. The battery can store enough energy to heat the town for about a month in summer and a week in winter. Since it began operating, it has helped warm homes, a school, a library, and government buildings.
During the cold, dark winter, some wood is still needed. However, the sand battery cuts wood use by 60%. The company’s leader says they are working to make the sand battery widely used in more Finnish towns.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案,并将其标号填入题前括号内。
11. What’s the main purpose of using the sand battery?
A. To store electricity for the town.
B. To find a cleaner way to heat buildings.
C. To stop using wood for heating completely.
D. To make better use of wind and solar power.
12. What role do wind and solar power play in the sand battery system?
A. They are used only when the sand runs out.
B. They directly heat the buildings in the town.
C. They provide the electricity that heats the sand.
D. They take the place of the sand battery in summer.
13. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How long the sand battery can hold the stored heat.
B. How the sand battery stores electricity for the town.
C. The way the sand battery works in different seasons.
D. The size, power, and performance of the sand battery.
14. What does the company’s leader’s word suggest about the battery?
A. It is too expensive to keep running.
B. It is difficult for local people to accept.
C. It works well enough to be worth sharing.
D. It needs improvement to work for a larger area.
15. Which might be the proper title for the text?
A. Finland’s Success in Saving Energy B. How Sand Can Help Heat Buildings
C. Sand Battery Warms a Finnish Town D. A Small Town’s Fight Against Pollution
【答案】11. B 12. C 13. D 14. C 15. C

【14题详解】
最后一段中提到“The company’s leader says they are working to make the sand battery widely used in more Finnish towns.”,这说明沙电池效果良好,值得推广分享,选项C正确。
【15题详解】

Once you get inside a car, remember to close the windows. If you are indoors, you must close all the doors and windows right away and keep away from them.
